Good question... well to be honest 2/3 of my vinyl collection consists of the kinda music you're asking about, 140bpm bass music (REAL dubstep before the whole genre got tarnished by complete dogshit thanks to the masses) i stopped buying vinyl about two years ago due to the over saturation of whacky synths, well, and $$$.

I have a better knowledge of this kinda music than i do jungle/dnb i'd say. A have a nice collection of zomby as you posted, and Rustie (two i kinda put together in the glitchy style of dubstep). Although i havent heard zomby's new album and havent been actively seeking new records for like 2 years as i mentioned. Really need to fix my other turntable and dust off my records as a lot have been forgotten.

Thing is what made dubstep special for me when i got into it like 7 years ago, was how many sub-styles it had/has, the spectrum is/was huge. You got the dub/ragga-eque side like Mungo's Hifi, radikal guru, LV etc, then Techno styles coming from martyn / 2562, then you got the tribal shit like Shackleton which i absolutely love. The Bug making grime-esque beats.

Thats just a few examples of the fuckload that i could give examples of but be here all day. which are essentially dubstep but people wanna pidgeon hole into a different categories/genres. Unfortunately now, dubstep is only known by the masses to be the dogshit which makes it into charts / what the kids popping e's for the first time wank over, screechy horrible shit, the polar opposite of what was born of the genre and real heads know about. but fuck em.

I can only do steppy beats, not monotonous bouncy beats like house/techno etc though, not my thing.

You're bang on about everything haha. the first time i heard Skream - Rutten about 5 or 6 years ago it just about blew my mind. I guess i was a bit late to the party but it opened this whole new exciting genre. It was fucking awesome watching the sound progress with, like you said, all the 'sub-genres' branching off it. Shackleton - Blood on my hands and Zomby - Digital Fauna. 2 examples of 140bpm (or close to) in a totally different style, sounding so good.

It's sad what happened but it's the same with any sound in the past. Just look at trance, and then the superclubs, ibiza, the top40 and so on... It's bound to happen, the great thing is there will always be a core, and always good sounds being made. That being said, the freshness of the early years (not that i was a part of it or anything, i was in my bedroom playing video games) can't be reproduced and the original 140bpm sound is difficult to create new ideas with.

There are some great producers out there still. Zomby (that track i posted is off his new album which isnt out for a month) still kicks ass. I also suggest DjRum album 'Seven Lies'. This is a track of his off an early EP which i love:



It's good to talk to someone who is on the same lines as me musically! I moved to Canada about 5 years ago from the UK and it's been both interesting and a bit sad to see how dubstep has moved across the Atlantic. First year I moved here i went to the local electronic music festival. Skream was headlining and he was so good, people didn't know wtf and it blew their minds. 1 year later every other DJ on that stage was playing synth heavy shit. 3 years on and dubstep is no longer drawing the crowds like it used to. It still does.. but not to the same extent. For a while it was all about the drop.. the build up and then make the loudest most obnoxious noise possible and slap a bass and a snare on it. I mean this year it will still be there but people are sort of over it. The cow has been milked. I'm ok with that. It's sad how the minimal sub-heavy sound never caught on over here in the same way as back home. My whacky theory is that part of it is to do with laptop speakers. youtube played a huge part in dubstep's explosion.. but you can't hear 50% of the track unless you have a good soundsystem or headphones. How do you get around that? Use higher frequencies....

Annyyywaaay.. I used to have tables back home in the UK. I have since sold them as they were too hard to transport over. To fix the mixing bug I like to whip up some ableton mixes.... but not live. I hate mixing on a laptop live, it's fucking boring. So i take about a month here and there when im inspired, smoked a spliff or whatever and piece by piece make a mix. I feel you can get a nice refined sound but it doesnt come close to getting your hands on wax and a couple tables. I bought a selection of my old records and will get some tables in time.

That tune is big, i have an alright selection of minimal / ambient dubstep similar to what you posted, although i enjoy that more to listen rather than to mix, is kinda why i havent invested much more into it.

Agreed it happens with most successful genres... the clueless idiots leech on whatever happens to be cool at the time whilst simultaneously turning it shit from the core, but fortunately the real heads making the real original sound stick to it, don't get me wrong there are the "sell-outs" (two sides to this argument - stick to your roots or sell out to the masses and make £££). There is very little money involved in the underground music scene here, making money is a bonus, most don't even break even, i guess digital music has eased that somewhat though.

Agreed, fortunately we have enough real nights on here to avoid that shit, these nights tend to be filled with annoying as fuck students clearly on their drug honeymoon still, shuffling and bouncing all over in a jam packed dance, unbelievably annoying, especially as they're creeping into the best kept events.

The minimal, bass heavy sound is definitely still alive and kicking here, and fortunately somewhat free of giddy cretins! Youngsta bringing the real deep dark material, not so much minimal but my preference right now for listening to for mixes. Deep dark has to be my love.

The whole laptop speaker generation is very valid, but does in no way justify producers to accommodate the shit that entails... no sub / worthy speakers? gtfo and listen to pop, that's tuned perfectly for your 20$ system. I think primarily the whack shit that's pumped out for the masses with no low frequencies are the bangwagon jumping cunts that produce the garbage with no soul or passion, purely because it's the cool thing at that time.

You should really get onto getting some new turntables, i invested in Traktor Scratch Pro a few years ago, which is basically a vinyl emulator, it's genius. I'm sure you know how they work, somehow they completely replicate vinyl touch/interaction onto your turntables but with a digital input via laptop. Was great at first but soon found that the endless amounts of digital music easily (illegally) available was becoming too much. Vinyl takes time to collect, in which times you learn the tracks / vinyl intimately... with the digital tunes i just had so many so fast and lost track, felt no passion as say, i could gather 500 tracks in one evening. No time to appreciate whatsoever, or learn.

Also i found digital music too crisp, that sounds ridiculous but i mix on studio/production speakers (KRK RP8s) and they're flawless, it's almost impossible to get two tunes blending smoothly via these speakers and digital music. With vinyl you get some nice, warm, rounded sound... feels like love!

nice. that's quest - stand. cheapest copy i could find on discogs was 50quid or so + international shipping. i wanted it so bad but i cant justify that right now haha. old deep medi tracks are expensive and hard to come by. I'll get some tables in the future, I dont really have the space right now anyway... will look at that program, i often find it hard to get inspired when using the laptop. I totally agree about digital copies feeling lifeless. I can love an mp3 but i'll never learn it inside out like i would a vinyl. I love being able to see the different shades in the grooves on a record and being able to tell whether it's a quieter less busy part of the track etc.. it just gives the whole thing life.

Ya i guess the Skrillex scene is still pretty huge out here. I live in a small town but it has a very vibrant arts and music scene, so luckily we get a fair few DJs coming through but I stopped going to most nights after a while. North America really struggles to make good electronic beats.. or maybe i'm just a snob and a bit spoiled... but it all sounds so damn watered down.

I'm glad theres still good nights being put on back home. It looks like there is a bit of a resurgence in the scene almost out of spite of all the commercial junk thats been in the spotlight recently.. it's good to see.

It's true what you say about the high frequences... it seems like its the lowest denominator basically, and it's easy to produce. It's hard to make a sub heavy track, you cant just fill it with junk and throw a sample on top of it.
