I don't know why the cup was for French Speaking areas only but I have two guesses :

Perhaps lanf3ust thought it would be a good idea to make a competition in honor of the french scene. SQF means French Quake Scene. I'm too new into Quake to explain what the SQF was exactly, but I think these are basically players that know each other for a long time now and make some kind of family. French players and french speaking Belgium players are part of it. I can understand why a paid competition reserved for francophony is weird in these hard times for Quake, but on the other hand I think it's cool to create links between the duellers and revive the french scene a bit. Also, that may be good for the audience to have some kind of national scenes. I know some people are following bundesliga or the spanish football league, or even the premier league (that might not be a good example since the teams are composed of multiple nationalities)...

Also, perhaps he thought it would be easier for a first cup to make it easy in regards with contact, schedule, etc.

I am moving to Norway soon, in pleasant anticipation I switched already to my new home country :)

Yep both arguments make sense to me, however I fear a lack of quality and a clear dominant streak by either dem0n or strenx. I am open for surprises though, we will see.
