Mr. Rapha (your holiness) HeDRAXSON made a decent point which he attributed to ZeRo4 I think (to the pros cut the ghey caps). Why make a shittier version of Quake Live, CPM, Quake 2 or Quakeworld?
What in the fucking fuck brah?!
But this is assuming a lot. So... 2GD is relatively "market accurate" so I would hope he doesn't want to out-quake Quake.
But that's a funny suggestion as well because so many small things, including map-specific things, make Quake Quake. Small modifications, a new engine and more may turn the genre on its head.
Personally I think Dota 2 is where its at, and will be at for a long time to come. Gabe knows wtf he's talking about. Any of you nuggas seen his speeches? That nugga is crazy "on top of things".
For example he is the first "uber" to entertain the notion of Futarchy - a betting market applied to businesses and perhaps politics devised by Robin Hanson.
To what extent, I don't know. But he spoke about it. I suspect a lot of what goes on there is the result of Robin Hanson's idea.
I hereby wish to inform you that I've bought a high number of firearms, ammunition and enough canned beans to keep me alive for a year. I demand that you release Reborn immediately, organize three quake lans with a $500 000 prize pool, convince every ex-pro to make a comeback, focus the gd studio completely on quake, sign my gf's chest and save arena FPS. For every day that my demands aren't met, I will shoot up a kindergarten.
I think it's pretty obvious that Reborn won't see the daylight, or at least not anytime soon. It might even be a good game, probably not better then QL, but no matter how good it is it certainly won't have a bigger playerbase. Also, all the promises about hosting QL events via The GD Studio, etc, and then we get 3-4 cups and are told to fuck off cause he's making Reborn.
I think your forgetting 2GD knows plenty about promoting/running shows and keeping a game alive. Something QL has nothing of ;) That counts for something in my book.
true, but he also was the esports manager for bloodline champions and it didn't pay off because in the end you don't need to promote a game if it is already good, people will come themselves.
the first impression is all that matters, so please 2GD don't release a buggy game just for the sake of being in a hurry because it will screw up everything.
quakelive was never advertised yet it had a great community and major LANs for years.
if a game is a pile of shit, it still remains a pile of shit even if it's popular.
I think we'd all like to see reborn as a good game rather than a popular shit game...
The beta launch had HUGE publicity, from gaming sites to nerd caverns like Slashdot. Where do you think I came from? Or millions others who never played Q3 but suddenly created accounts in QL?
And the major LANs back in 2009-2010 were what, not advertising/PR?
All of that ended with Zenimax acquisition and failure of not one but two subsequent in-game advertising companies. But that's a story of idea and technology being ahead of its time, combined with total disregard for product's polish (stuff like game becoming permanently non-working if you choose wrong resolution or use a console command? wtf? Think how huge userbase QL would have if it was made by Apple with their attention to user experience)
Playerbases of newly released games are dependent on both the quality of the released material and marketing/promotional strategies taken in the build-up to release. The second part doesn't just involve an advertising campaign, but also brand awareness (of either the game series, the developer or personalities involved in the creative process) and of the pre-release actions.
The brand awareness of Reborn is directly tied in to the brand awareness of theGDstudio (an inter-genre fan of theGDstudio is very likely to show interest towards Reborn for example), and by continuing to provide streams for DOTA and SC2 (mainly DOTA), they are continuing to further establish fanbases and event stream saturation. It would be predicted a lesser playerbase than QL if the studio for some reason chose to exclusively cover Deathmatch events, which is ironically what you criticise them for not doing.
Oh and despite all that, they've still managed to provide QL-related content: theGDshow has a quake section, they've hosted live tournaments with prize pools AND have given QL exposure with impromptu streams as well.
p.s. crazy yugo fuckface how many tournaments have YOU hosted in 2013, cos I haven't seeing shit about CTF lately.
"In other news, in Quake live there are daily faceit cups. Let's move on."
No, but seriously, they aren't really covering Quake Live in their show. I don't expect them to talk 30 minutes about Quake, 10 would be already enough. But I guess you cannot really expect anything else when most of their staff are only interested in Dota or Starcraft.
Yet I still agree with you, they did a good job with their tournaments in the past and they didn't drop Quakelive to this day from their covered games (just as Dreamhack don't drop Quake from their lans), so I guess we can expect more Quakelive cups in the future (I think they are quite busy with their Dota 2 production at the moment).
I see games like World of Tanks and FIFA 13 on the upcoming DHS, but Quake is mysteriously missing. That's in line with DH admins posting here on ESR about dropping Quake.
What the gd studio does, and the reason why they stopped hosting ql tournaments and covering it, is getting prize money from a sponsor, then asking some people to participate in an online cup and see how it goes. No sponsors no qvak, getting less viewers than X game no qvak.
The moment 2gd went independent and there was no money in the game (sponsors and viewers) quake coverage almost completely stopped, just like djwheat, carmac, joe and others did. I know he tried to do plenty for the game (when there was still money in it) and that faceit, 125fps, dreamhack and zoot/ddk level of dedication cannot be asked to anyone, but those are the people that currently support the game and went way beyond 2gd and others efforts, to the point of losing money on it (less viewers), having a professional organization, making covering quake practically a job and funding cups themselves or getting sponsors out of nowhere.
All that means that if quakers are going to support somebody let it be faceit, 125fps, dreamhack, but not 2gd, not wheat, etc. because they already dropped quake. Considering actions speak louder than words and that there are literally hundreds of quake streams a year, when was the last time you saw 2gd, wheat, joe, etc. casting or organizing a quake cup?
If you a quaker and you are going to donate your money for something quake related, then your money will be better used in faceit than in reborn.
As for the game itself, there's no way it'll be out and on a decent state this year. Lets see if people care about it whenever it is, because all the rest is speculation.
I've seen how bloodline champions, where he was the e-sports director (or some equally moronic title), worked out. another dead game.
as far as your argument of them providing QL coverage, I've no idea what you're on about. does 2 mins per show count as giving anything to QL? I'm pretty sure they don't give a fuck about QL, seeing how the tournaments haven't been around for ages now. No, wait. Let me rephrase that, QL tournaments on The GD Show kinda died out with announcing Reborn, and that game will flop. If not in terms of quality, then in terms of playerbase. By the time it comes out, we'll be playing Quake5. Waste of money, waste of time, Bloodline Champions all over again.
P.S. crazy polack gaylord, feel free to keep on sucking Jay's dick just because he had a gf once in his life compared to you. :D :D :D
this is officially my first and last comment about reborn on esr until we see something: you're waisting your time people. let's wait for anything to surface and then get our hopes up. we all want it to be good, and James with a proper team of coders that get fast fps is capable to deliver, but we know almost nothing now. premature hype and bloated expectations will do nothing but hurt the final product.
