Bug 1: command-line parameters don't override options from config file (fixed)

Improvement 1: Playing http streams with mplayer isn't very good at the moment.
First of all the suggested setting are just wrong. Atm I'm experimenting with something like this:

mplayer -cache 20000 -cache-min 10 -cache-seek-min 10

Looks like it seeks ok to points which has already been played (but aren't in the cache) so I guess it has something to do with flv structure and cuepoints. I'll look into this.

There are two other solutions to this:
1. Use a player that can cache whole video or it's parts in file like flash players do. If you know a one that does this then let me know :-)
2. Add an option to download the files to disk an play them while they download. (no forward seeking in this case)

Improvement 2: Play already downloaded files from disk.
Improvement 3: Join 30 minutes parts.

There will be definitely v1.1 :-)

well, dno what to say, just use twitch.tv/justin api and u can watch all vods, even the ones that need subscription.

just change gomtv.xml to yourchannel.xml and limit from 10 to whatever you want. it'll output titles & links, so you just have to put those links in to vlc/mplayer/any kind of player.

That's the point. I just got tired of doing this manually so I wrote a script like you did.

The only difference is that my script is interactive and provides a simple user interface to perform common tasks (read the "help" page). Also I'm planning to add features like merging 30 minute parts together.

ye merging is a nice option, but if you plan on dling it, which i don't so i prefer these 30min parts. easier to buffer/seek/stream.

how u use this

It's a bash script so you basically need *nix operating system. For example Linux or OS X.

You can install bash on windows but it's complicated and not worth the effort imo.

That might not work. Theres an actual build floating around that uses cygwin libs but its from 2006 which would probably cause even more issues.

The script only launches media player with video's http address as parameter. You can run windows executables from cygwin's shell.

I've just set it up here (with windows vlc) and it was pretty easy. Instruction in few minutes.

I've had trouble running native windows programs from cygwin before but this was over ssh and not locally. Got around it by using programs compiled against cygwin.

Purely speculation though. I'm busy with finals and don't have cygwin installed but I might have to check this out soon. :)

Programs compiled "against cygwin" (against cygwin1.dll) are no different than others. They are just PE binary files.

It had to do with access restrictions on processes spawned from sshd interacting with the desktop, which I believe I overcame by using an x11 native mplayer, and hence, cygwin.

1. Run again cygwin's installer - setup.exe
Don't change any options and click next until you get to "Select Packages" window.
Select following packages:
Web/wget
Util/ncurses
Base/mintty
Click next to the end.

2. Download an updated version of my script (I'll attach it in a moment to the main post)

From now on I'm going to assume that your cygwin directory is C:/cygwin and your windows login is "name"

3. Unpack the script and copy justin-player to C:/cygwin/usr/local/bin, copy justin-player.conf to C:/cygwin/home/name/ and rename it to .justin-player.conf (notice the . at the begining, if you can't then launch mintty.exe and type "mv justin-player.conf .justin-player.conf)

4. edit .justin-player.conf (Not in notepad. Wordpad should be ok).
Set path to your player (I tested with vlc and media player classic and both were ok although both sucked when it came to seeking) and download directory.
In cygwin for example path to drive C: is /cygdrive/c/ rest is normal. Use / instead of \
Example:
PLAYER=/cygdrive/c/Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exe
DOWNLOAD_DIR=/cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/name/Video/Twitch/

5. You are good to go. Launch mintty (you should have a shortcut somewhere or find it in C:/cygwin/bin/mintty.exe) and type
justin-player faceittv
Rest is self-documenting

I found 2 bugs:

* There is no trailing slash in my $HOME variable so when displaying help it does something like:

/home/anon.justin-player.conf

This is only when diplaying the help and not in load_config().

* in the play() function, line 164: it was trying to execute (with the quotes): "/usr/bin/mplayer -bunchofoptions" "http://link.to.vid"
so I had to remove the \" around $PLAYER

- eval "\"$PLAYER\" \"${URL[$1]}\""
+ eval "$PLAYER \"${URL[$1]}\""

Somehow I assumend that all PATH vars should end with / (at least mine do :-) )

The second bug has somehow emerged in 1.1 version written on windows. I've already replaced the line with simply

I haven't felt like learning python yet :-)

There is a new feature - playing downloaded videos directly from disk. They get nicely marked in video list ([*] - downloaded, [+] - partially downloaded) and you can delete them directly from justin-player using number ranges. See ttyshot 4 in main post.

Also some minor bugs were fixed and script should work now with bash 3.x so update is recommended.

does merge work?

No. I don't think I'm going to implement this in bash version (and python version only comes out when I feel like learning python).

Btw if someone is wondering why doesn't it work - it's because for some reason justin api has been down for few days.

Looks like justin.tv api has been dropped in favor of new twitch.tv api. I'll update (fork?) the script in a day or two. It still works for justin.tv channels.

There is already a popular script that downloads twitch.tv broadcasts (among many other sources) - http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/ . There is also a precompiled windows version available.

Simplest usage: open past broadcast page http://www.twitch.tv/zootlive/videos?kind=past_broadcasts , copy the link of a broadcast of your choice and run inside a command line youtube-dl http://www.twitch.tv/zootlive/b/418211129 (drag and drop to the program should work as well).

I wrote almost everything (json parsing was pain in the ass) just to realize that there is no way to obtain a list with highlight titles and their respective video ids. I can get highlight titles + broadcast ids or broadcast titles + highlight ids :| I could pair highlight with corresponding video based on their date but I'm not going to write such things in bash.

If anyone knows how to get such list - let me know and I'll update the script.

Going back to porting jedi knight 2. For the time being youtube-dl is good enough, although it doesn't have any interactive ui or listing capabilities so it's not an alternative like vmil86 suggested. It's like comparing youtube-dl with youtube-viewer (which was my inspiration in the first place).

BTW, livestreamer now supports twitch.tv VODs too (usage similar to #27). But the VOD link still has to be acquired from the website.
