I started using zoom at some point (only with rail). Can't say I'm hitting more since though....

I've never been using zoom, just started when I saw it on some VODs of quake4 or something. i never realized people actually used it, always thought of it more as a hinderance than an advantage. if i start zooming i die within seconds because i fall of an edge or get rocketed from behind. really makes it hard to stay on top of the game imo...

Who is in danger, the person with or without railgun? 50% rail accuracy is pretty easy without zoom. Sometimes 70% rail is easy with zoom. There is a disadvantage, though. I'm estimating that there is a 100-200ms delay by zooming in. If your opponent doesn't have a railgun it doesn't even matter.

That has absolutely nothing to do with zoom. Zoom is a tool that can be finely tuned for all situations. You can activate it to have the enemy model filling your entire screen from across the map. Combined with a weapon like railgun it's just too easy. Why lock g_playermodelscale? Just press a key whenever you want huge enemies.

Then again it would get messed up when people use their own scripts for everything from normal zoom (low fov instead of +zoom) to shaft zoom to that crazy thinner-shaft zoom-but-not-zoom thing (if people still do that).

Sure, if only that extra information about zooming is grabbed whenever the built-in zooming function is toggled, then that's already a step forward.

If they use other kind of scripts to change the fov to zoom-alike ones, then extra information would be probably necessary, like keylogging and any change in config values.

Also with this could go the complete inclusion of players configs and even custom HUDs. That single file, which would be a little bit bigger due to the extra information, would render the hunt for configs and HUDs after each tournament redundant. This single file could also be split up into the consisting parts: The demo itself, the config, the custom HUD. Or the single parts would have some kind of extra information to allow the game to assemble them, whenever it's desired.

Now imagine this scenario where you would load up a demo and see almost identical what has happened during a match from the POV of the player you have the demo from. Almost identical is said, due to different display aspect ratios and thus not providing exact information. Black borders would help to reduce extra information, what was not available to the player providing the source.

And then remember, what has been wished for quite some time ago by our community, that we would be able to skip easily through demos and be able to play on our own from any situation. Wanna lift cooller in the air on t7 like strenx? Wanna survive like rapha? Imagine that. Imagine multi-POV.

The next step is to have then the same hardware and settings to recreate the scenario. 60Hz, 75Hz, 120Hz, what input lag and so on. To really see what the player has seen. And then be able to judge how hard certain situations must have been.

But this goes over the top. And is off-topic.

I think it would be easier to invite two pro players to your house and get them to recreate a famous game.

There is a delay. Activating zoom instead of just aiming and shooting is approximately 100-200ms time passed. However the increased chances of hitting the shot is arguably worth it.

i zoom when i preaim spots on certain maps, and for extreme long range shots on big maps and the "delay" isn't even worth mentioning. if it causes that much of a disruption in your gameplay, maybe you need some practice.

Many would argue that the 1/9th of a second value you assert is the delay for zooming is actually a brain to hand delay.

Banning zoom would be completely ineffectual considering one could bind a key to simply change their fov/sens. The zoom function is merely a momentary, +state of that.

Bring aliases in to the equation, and you can write your own +zoom function that behaves identically.

Reading comprehension. Obviously zoom is available to everybody. Some noobs in particular could tier up if they had a decent zoom setup, though. Zoom in its current state is a little OP, IMHO. What does good tracking matter if zooming in will increase accuracy by 10-20%? It just makes shit easy and that's what I don't like about it. Restricting < 90 FOV would make things more balanced with railgun in particular. Hey, at least Call of Duty actually puts scopes on the guns... maybe they should add binoculars to every QuakeLive model.

Maybe zooming with a low or lowered sensitivity helps 'rail' in open/long distance maps because if done right I guess it essentially tricks yourself to not overcompensate -- because well you're use to adjusting for lg distances(the further away the more you over compensate). I personally don't feel this over compensation effect until way after lg distance's and I very rarely get into those annoying dodgy long distance rail battles in Duel/FFA with the exception being vertical vengeance(I'm sure the gametypes that I hate like CA/TDM/CTF is filled with them though). From my own observations most people in those situations usually opt in for the strafe react(not moving their mouse) in those long distances anyway. And if you played any fps for a couple months the reaction speed is negligible be it a small cluster of the enemies pixels or your whole screen.


But I cannot see how it add's 10-20% to LG, I could even see how zooming makes peoples aim worse because the opponent will seem to move quicker out of your screen when zoomed and it also changes your perception on how far the really opponent is. At the end of the day your still going to be moving your mouse the same required distance to trace(you still need to aim). In addition when the opponent changes directions your going to react just as quick and correct/trace very similarly according to your ability to control the mouse which is mainly muscle memory(there's other factors too). The only benefit I can imagine, is it being more likely to place your crosshair at a position on the model that works best for you which more realistically would be maybe a 1% increase. I doubt many people will take that much care in their aim style, as aimming is very automatic and also very dynamic as in it requires different mouse speeds/mouse distance's depending on how far your opponent is and what s/he is doing. I would also assume that most peoples comfort zone for tracing and adjusting averages in the medium distances which max LG distance most likely falls within as well. Now if there was a way to adjust the zoom fov and sensitivity based on how far the opponent is from you so that it feels like your tracing for a specific distance all the time then sure that should be illegal but with that amount of information you might as well just use an aimbot.


I've seen you play and you average like 40+ lg (it looks weird to me but I guess its legit, I'm sure my aim looks hackerish at times too) but I'm probably in a similar boat for I can hit 40's with LG and MG and I use 110 fov with no zoom so maybe you and I should use zoom and get that 60+. :>

No, zoom should not be illegal.

A. There are plenty of top players that don't use zoom at all. I don't know how many tournaments rapha won without zooming for example, and he had fov 110 for many of them.

B. Zooming is a modern day staple for FPS games. It's a feature that people like.

C. Lowering fov incurs a penalty in that it is easier for the enemy to move outside of your field of view.

D. Zooming incurs a consistency penalty, in that your sensitivity changes as well as your fov, so you're learning to aim with two different fov values and two different sensitivity values.

E. Zooming does not have a set fov, and there is some personal preference when it comes to the extent. Too low and the zoom is disorienting, too high and it isn't much of a zoom at all. To derive whatever advantage is to be had, they have to be using a zoomfov value that works for them.

To sum things up it's a desired feature, and it does not necessarily give one player a substantial advantage over another. So its function should not be curtailed or removed.

I'm guessing you didn't see purplera1n (naotablows) at QuakeCon? His zoom LG was practically unstoppable. He was only taken down one time by cl0ck. His team didn't make it to the end, but what's interesting to think about is what if his teammates had the same setup? Now that would have been something to see.

That's what's called a fallacy of a "hasty generalization". Using too small of a representative sample to indicate a trend.

We have a handful of good LG users, like Strenx and presumably Naotablows who zoom when they LG.

It doesn't prove that it works for everyone, nor that if these players did not zoom that their LG would be greatly weakened.

Nor does it show that if they simply lowered sens and not fov as well that they their LG would be greatly weakened.

To put a cvar on the "chopping block" or to lock it down it would have to satisfy one or more of the following criteria in a significant way:

1. It causes a crash. (Ex: systeminfo , although I think it may have just been fixed and not removed, not sure.)

2. It has no effect due to it being legacy or otherwise. (Ex: com_introplayed)

3. It has been renamed. (Ex: scr_conspeed vs. con_speed)

4. It is believed to give a substantial advantage and is not commonly understood to do so. (Ex: timenudge was disabled on LAN, how it tells it's on LAN I'm not sure, I suspect ping < N)

5. It is advantageous but not available to all players. (Thank goodness I can't think of an example).

6. It substantially changes or breaks game play. (Ex: god mode, noclip)

The first 3 don't apply.

#5 is definitely not true, and also zoom is bound to mouse2 _by default_ so it's highly unlikely to go unnoticed by new players.

I think we can safely say that #6 is not true, as it has been available in all game types for quite some time, and even seen tournament use. The game types aren't really broken by it, and the lack of super common use indicates that it's not a substantial change.

That leaves #4.

Like I wrote in my previous post (See C, D, and E), the advantage is offset by disadvantages, and is not guaranteed.

It's hard to imagine a player not having had even tried to zoom before shooting at least once, so they would be likely aware of the possibility.

The only legitimate weakness of zoom LG is when you're against rockets. Therefore I believe that the advantages are not offset. Like I wrote in my original post, I believe zoom primarily cheapens the railgun. What makes it a balanced weapon? Well, it requires accuracy and has a long delay. The more zoom increases the accuracy the more unbalanced the weapon becomes. The more distance cut by zoom the less skill the shot actually requires. It's a little subjective... and of course zoom is available to everybody. I just think it's kind of silly. Frankly it's hard to miss. I'm aware that rapha has done amazing things in Quake. Like I wrote earlier, I really appreciate non-zoom players who have high accuracy. That's Quake in its rawest form perhaps. I do wonder if id envisioned such high accuracy being common. Zoom does not guarantee this, but it does facilitate it.

I believe you can go lower by manually making a zoom script that uses fov instead of zoomfov since the lower bound for fov is lower, like 15 maybe.

Sponge told me that there's nothing special with QL Lan, that it's really just an internet server that just happens to be local in the case of a lan.

Also, timenudge is client side. I suppose it could have a special test for a QL server that's been set up special for a lan tournament, but it seems more likely that it just turns off timenudge based on ping < x.

Another tiny and very iffy piece of evidence is that autoTN came out very near or identical to the update that timenudge was disabled on lan, which would make sense if ping was now being considered in the code in some way that it wasn't before.

Yet another even weaker piece of evidence is that since QL is fairly regularly updated, they would have to update two server programs instead of one if they had one that was special for lan. Would be easier just to have one, and maybe it could feature a couple switches for lan play if anything special was needed.

Not really, because timenudge has to do with the way that the client displays information. The server doesn't know anything about its operation.

I rarely zoom with the LG, so yeah. I only set up zoom binds and such relatively recently. Dunno where you got the idea that I'm constantly zooming from. I do play with a fov of 90, though.

Tbh I really don't think zooming is nearly as advantageous as you're making it out to be. I only find it useful for certain rail angles (RA to RAIL platform on DM6 comes to mind) and in some situations with LG when you're in a fairly straightforward fight and pretty far away from the guy.

Also that tournament was the prequakecon tournament, not quakecon. The guys I played with needed a third because theirs left so they found me in a pub. I really wasn't lging that well, just was fighting in tunnel on trinity where there isn't much dodging going on.

Your logic is flawed. You could just as well argue according to your logic that higher FOV makes enemy slower thus easier to track and so should be illegal, I mean ffs I thought this was supposed to be a twitch shooter! See if the enemy model becomes "50% percent larger" (which it doesn't since hitbox size stays the same) then its also going to be moving 50% faster. Also zooming has obvious consequences which you seem to ignore such as you being more prone to not seeing other enemies or making dodging more difficult. It's not as if zoomers are dominating QL, in-fact you have top players such as rapha or av3k who don't even use zoom at all.

At the end of the day, people have been playing Q3/QL since 1999 and have been experimenting with different FOV values for just as long. Both sides of extreme FOV values have been tried from daler with cg_fov 69 to early osp days russian players with cg_fov 130, and now 14 years most players use a fov value between 90-110 and for a reason since its balanced.

Well in the case of rapha he didn't have a zoom key in any of his configs for a while, or if he did have a zoom key the zoomfov was set to the same as the fov. Also you never saw him zooming in event videos.

Let's also ban most of the weapons and items pickups: health, armor and weapons/ammo. Weapons now have recharging ammunition and while we're at it change the game modes too. What would be really fair and interesting would be a mode of attack and defend where there are three defenders with rocket launchers and one attacker with a railgun, who has to eliminate the defenders or capture a flag pole. Because all this variety and game mechanics just get in the way of true skill.

A good sensitivity will help your aim more than zoom. So while where at it let's force everyone to use the same sens. That way no one will be at an unfair aim advantage.

When people use zoom, they actually use it for a split second, just to correct the cross hair appropriately placing it over the enemy model...quick zoom toggle for higher efficiency is all ti is. It especially helps higher sens players.

It would be cool if there was some sort off +/-fov commands that would gradually increase/decrease your fov and adjust your sensitivity accordingly. Then you could bind that to the mouse wheel. cg_fovchangerate could tell how fast the fov changes as the mouse wheel is used.

That's the idea but I would prefer if it was fully integrated in a new QL command instead of that butt ugly vstr fest with which changing the steps of 10 degrees to 5 or 1 wouldn't be nice.

70 rg is not that impossible, zoom or without it. 50 lg can be more tricky.

It's much easier to claim than to actually hit those accuracies.
You'd be surprised what a good defrag player I'd be if I'd just play it. But it's too easy. They use strafejumping. So lame. Anyone can go fast with exploiting silly bugs by just moving the mouse left and right.

I think hardware should be customizable. Other than sens the game overall should not be.
If the game is to be looked at as a sport then only the "equipment" used to play it should be customizable.
No other sport has/ allows ways to customize the visual aspect of the playing field.

I lol'd at the thought of someone with "zoom glasses" that would like zoom into the screen.

Really though doing this for gaming would be tremendously inconvenient, even if you could convert most options over to a purely hardware implementation (such as brightness settings). It would also be a lot more expensive.

Most sports allow you to wear sunglasses, and you can draw whatever you want on them like if you wanted a crosshair or something. Could also have a variety of tints.

Hardware as in: mouse, keyboard, headphones, montior, comp.

Sunglasses would really only effect brightness. I do like your x-hair drawing idea lol.

What about resolution and other graphics and performance settings? Say one can't run the game at 125fps with the factory settings. Or FOV and gamma/brightness. Some people get motion sickness from too low FOV's or maybe my room is at a certain lighting that I feel the need to adjust settings like that. Rebinding keys? Sure I could think of many more aspects that only make natural sense to be modified.

Besides one could see the game itself as some sort of equipment to compete against the other player(s).

And olympic shooters and such use polarizing and other optical devices to enhance and/or limit their vision. By customizing the game you don't change the rule set, just optimize the interface to suit your own preferences.

Actually after all that I said, I still feel it is way too far fetched to compare a computer game to any sport.

my best guess is that it only adds about 10% to lg in ql(haven't done a proper test yet tho). However, it used to add about 15-20% in ra3/osp(yes, i tested it thoroughly)!!!!!!!!!!

zoomrail adds 15%+ in ql tho, it is overpowered

yes, it takes skill to be a good zoom user, but it takes more skill to be extremely proficient with every weapon on 1 fov.
anything under 90 should be removed. zoom is too powerful in a slow game like QL. zoom is fine in q4 1.42/cpm tho, it's not overpowered there.
