Well I hope not but I also don't know how they would know that, are there banned maps you aren't allowed to have in your map folder which cause similar effects?

OK, I have no idea how some other .pk3 map file in your maps folder can mess up your graphics. I might not know everything about game programming or the Quake-engine, but that just seems weird to me in the first place.

But as already mentioned, be careful with this kind of stuff, if it interferes with Quake Lives anti-cheat against unpure .pk3 files (i think is designed to directly make sure things like transparency, shadows etc doesn't change) you might get banned in the end.

I would still like if anyone could explain to me how this .pk3 file in the maps folder can cause this? QL should go to the maps folder and load a specific .pk3 file for the map needed, how does this "not listed" file in the maps folder cause any trouble.

I don't know either but it only happens when the map is in the folder.

.pk3 files are like .zip's containing many other files. If there are two files with the same name inside two .pk3's, the one within the "latter" (A->Z) .pk3 will be used. Perhaps those files contained graphics of explosions and plasma which were semi-transparent and they were loaded later, than files with original explosions. At least it was like that in q3, maybe in QL pak##.pk3 are always loaded as first, considering that "dfwc2008-5.pk3" would be loaded before them if only alphabetical order was used.

if you put a custom file into your ql directory which adds an advantage over the available official QL stuff, similar to an exploit, you don't think that's banworthy?

I don't mean that it's not, I'm rather saying that all exploits like this should be fixed first(which it already seems to be)

There have been similar bugs with offline paks that do stuff online and should be fixed at some point :/

A trick I learned for the Q3 engine.

The pure check only checks the checksum of a file so if you don't want to use a particular asset for example, you can just go into your PK3 and change the name of the file.

This was especially useful for me when I didn't want a certain map constantly blaring an alarm siren.

I also tried making an annoying image transparent but couldn't because that would require manipulating shaders, which would change the contents and checksum of a file. I did change the name, but got an annoying default shader blob instead of nothing.

Go learn a bit about mapping, and what textures are transparent. Instead of changing the name to something that doesn't exist, change it to a known transparent texture. Something like "caulk" maybe.

Also, I'm not sure it's a good idea. It sounds bannable to me, cause I know syncerror and others have said in the past that things like pg are designed to obscure vision in the game. Being able to see through it would give someone an unfair advantage, no different than seeing through walls.

The question of whether there should be cvars to allow us to customize things like pg or rocket explosions (q3 nomip?) is an interesting one. Concepts like force model and bright models are cheats in most FPS games. We welcome them in Quake because we think it's more fun, and it allows us to raise the game's skill ceiling. But designing pg as a tool that can obscure vision sounds legit too. Who knows :)

You misunderstand. Caulk is an editor specific "no draw" texture to seal your map from the void. You can't use it in the game. If you could just re-edit all the maps before playing them that would be cheating.

What I propose doesn't edit the contents of any file at all.

Of course being able to see through something that you're not supposed to would be cheating but that is what the default shader blob is for. To replace any unused assets that aren't drawn. Infact, I think there is a fresh and cool looking map in Quake Live that makes use of the default shader quite a bit. I was trying to make an icon transparent though not an actual texture.

My post has more to do with not using unwanted assets though. It's a good solution for annoying sounds especially.
