Why? If you understand what a VPN is you should know that it's perfectly possible to have an excellent ping when using one. If your ISP is routing properly it won't be better than your ISP but it can be at least similar (that's my situation atm). And he's saying his ISP sucks.

uh? sure there can be but in this case we don't know for sure. Maybe 40ms is the best ping he can get with his connection (in that case his VPN is already good enough) but maybe not. He didn't give us a lot of info.

In css/tf2/cod4 i get a stable ~15 ping to german servers.

I'm trying fixmylag currently, I just got it yesterday so I'm not sure how good it is but the little I've played it seemed better than wtfast

What is the ping compared to wtfast? Im thinking about giving it a try even though there are no trials for fixmylag.

I got myself a incloak account. Using OpenVPN and have terrible connection issues. Have to try different servers for some minutes till I get a connection. Maybe only an issue from China?

Some servers might have really bad issues during peak times. But i'm pretty sure that they aren't cheating and servers are the same for trial mode. I'm usually contact support if this happens more than 1-2 days, they are pretty fast, informative and honest with responses (i.e. this is temporary issue, server will be dead forever or alternative location will be provided).

I use http://www.frozenway.com/index.php and it has tons of servers (free users like me only have access to FR/NL/GER servers though) and using FR servers I get exactly the same ping as with my ISP (when it's not acting up). Using GER or NL servers I get maybe +5ms (so for me that usually means 35ms instead of 30, not a big deal).

Site is in French but the software can be set to English (also, it's a portable application). As a free user you're limited to 128kbps bandwidth (up and down) which is more than enough for gaming (but too slow for anything else)

Ive tried 3 different ISP here in Finland and I get unplayable packetloss to all servers with all ISP and awful pings. I doubt its QL fault.

Well i've tried most of the vpns mentioned in this thread, but the best ping i can get is around 45, using incloak.com...

Is there no other way to get a different routing or improve the ping?

Well we don't know much about your connection but... first of all, if that applies to your kind of connection, try to make sure you're on fastpath rather than interleaved.

Well, here's a short summary about my connection:

- 36 mb/s down, 8 mb/s up
- fastpath
- ~15 ping to german servers in cod4/tf2/etc, 40 ping in ql
- 0% packet loss according to pingtest.net

I will post some pingtest/speedtest results when im back home.

Have you tried contacting your ISP? If you can't improve things using a VPN then something needs to be done at the provider level. Seems to me you have a great connection but your provider isn't making a big effort when it comes to routing (I mean getting poor routing to QL servers is one thing, but getting poor routing with VPNs as well is kinda shocking).

I have problems with my routing lately,i was always a high pinger(about 70 ms) but now it is unplayaple(more than 95).
So i tried incloak vpn the first time i joined a server it worked fine and my ping was 70 again,but later when i tried to play in another server i couldnt join and i read the message you,ve been banned...
I wasn't banned of course when i disconnected from the vpn server i could join again in a game like before,so are there any suggestions from the guys here who are using it and play normally?i guess im doing something wrong.

hackers aren't stupid. chances are one of them is/was using incloak and got (one of) their ip ranges banned.

back when atl worked (2+ years ago) I went from (florida) 30 to 15 ping using a vpn. dahang started using it also, then routing went to .......

Start with the basics. Ping the first hop past your home router. If that sucks then no vpn will help you. You'll need to sort that issue out with your isp, or switch to a different one.

After that, what you Ideally want is a vpn provider that your isp has good connectivity to, that also has good overall connectivity. Preferably something in the same city you live in or the nearest major city. So the answer of which vpn is best is highly dependant on where you live and which isp you are using.

its just a small program, like mirc. you start it. select server and press connect. its connected and you are already on "different routing". Any program / game will use different routing from that second.

Most VPN providers (incloak, ibvpn, frozenway etc.) offer an app that's as simple to use as GUArd said. You log in, select a server and voilą, your entire Internet traffic with be routed through the VPN. So you just start QL and play normally.

If you do it manually with OpenVPN or something like that it can be a bit more complicated. You might have to set up static routes, mess around with network interface metrics etc.

Try Nord VPN.
Its got a lot of server choices for your country and is highly ranked for gaming. Very cheap and you can try it month to month for only a few dollars.

Downside: you need to 'favorite" or write down/ remember what servers you pinged well on so you can find them again and again.

I easily shaved 20 ms off using Nord and or wtfast.
It can make a big difference.
