I would like to compare it to sports gear, football shoes, golf clubs, tennis racket or whatever. You might not be worse with a different one, but some might make u "feel" that you're better.

All you really need is good visibility of enemy models and a comfortable mouse sensitivity.

I don't think they do, it's your own perception of what works. Change makes you focus, but that kind of focus fades quickly.

I had this change from widescreen (16:9) back to 4:3. All of a sudden my quake felt a lot more comfortable and I started to hit difficult shots etc. Games later, feeling really happy about my change, I checked my accuracies: nothing changed. Mayor changes can make minor improvements, but there is absolutely no magic setting that basicly aims for you.

Like a lot of people already said, a good cfg and mouse is mainly for comfort. Ofc with a bad mouse and the default cfg you can still hit 40%LG 60%RG, as long as you have high visibility enemy model (with more than 75fps, stable) and as long as your mouse doesn't skip/tracks quite decently.
Some people like toxjq and stermy would obviously still hit high accuracies with the default cfg and with a random bad quality mouse.

BUT, having a perfectly tunned cfg (that suits you at 100%), having a mouse like the WMO / IE 3.0 / g400s / g100s / EC1 evo / DA 2013 / FK, AM, will make you hit those extra +1-3%LG and +5-8%RG. Also, a very good keyboard is much more comfortable than a low quality one, and your dodges might improve a little bit, just like the accuracies.

So, let's say that you give to toxjq a random cheap mouse and a bad quality keyboard with the default cfg (picmip 0, enemymodel bright, 80fps). After like 3 weeks he will hit like 38-39%LG and 55-57%rail. Now you give him back his good old IE 3.0 on his icemat, 125fps, his own quakelive config and his favorite keyboard.
After 3 weeks of practice you can be sure that he will hit 40%LG and 60%rail again. +1-2%LG and +3-5%rail.

Ofc you can get used to anything, as long as you practice a lot, ofc cfgs are mainly a matter of preference, and ofc having your own customized cfg will not make you instant 1337. But some people are underrating comfort. When you have your own perfectly customized cfg, with a good mouse/mousepad and a good keyboard/monitor, after like 6months of practice, you won't ever say a single time when you lose that you lost because of your mouse/keyboard/bad cfg.
If you want to be top100-200 at duel, cfg and equipment doesn't really matter, but if you want to be top3-5, every little thing matters, including cfg.

if your mouse skip/doesn't track properly then ofc hitting 38%lg is almost impossible, but now most modern mice do track decently, even the crapiest one :D, and also, you can still add some mouseaccel if your sensor doesn't allow you to play at low/very low sens.

with a lot of practice everything is possible really. If you are talented and you practice a lot, then even with a bad mouse (but still not TOO bad), you can be a solid player.

Honestly I think the best thing to do is start with the competition setting and then rate 20000-25000 cl_maxpackets 125. Then do the essentials and then just make small tweaks if you notice an improvement just keep the change. I assume that is how most do it. Another thing you can do is if you are playing and you notice you are having consistent issues with something you can change it.

A good config does matter. The problem is for the vast majority of players it's not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is almost always skill and attitude/concentration. Basically you have to be very good indeed for config to really become important. As has been said however the psychological effects of a comfortable config are not to be underestimated, and certainly extremely bad settings will mess up your game.

TLDR timenudge -20 it aims for you.

beyond a few essential commands the rest of a config is most likely a placebo entrenched perfection loop. get set up and play without adjustment until the small details become relevant enough to seek an edge.

cg_kickscale only I'd say, maybe cg_bob, forceenemymodel probably, all the rest is preference, fun and habit.

Only to a certain degree. The minimum cfg you really need for competitive play is basically:

weapon binds
sensitivity/accel
Rates/maxpackets
Forcemodel/color
crosshair
resolution/refresh/fov

Beyond those most things are pure preference, especially visibility tweaks like picmip, lg style, pg style, smoke, weapon bob, truelightning etc.

weapon binds aren't that bad in the default config, played with that for a while myself

default sensitivity with 4 is good enough at 400-800 dpi I guess

more than default rate is not needed on smaller servers, maxpackets 63 is something that's being discussed in that other thread, whether it actually could be an advantage over 125

keel/bright is already default enemy model

with crosshair I agree, default is crap, but at least there's one that's visible to the eye + actually centered

res/refresh will be used from desktop configuration unless you're on crt

fov 100 default is pretty sane as well

Yes, it does matter to have a good cfg. It won't turn you into rapha, but it'll help your game regardless.

at some point it's so hard to step up your game that you will need to have and do everything to get into the higher level
including a cfg that suits you the best

when i used to play some ql graphical settings also mattered a lot to me, when i changed crosshair i was always hitting better

I'd say it doesn't. There are a couple of commands that can have a significant impact on your performance, like 'sensitivity' and 'cg_hitbeep'. Make sure to use an enemymodel with a bright skin, preferably either keel or tankjr. Perhaps lowering the graphics could make it easier to spot opponents.

Aside from these basic things, imo all the other commands are very small personal preference things, focussing on improving your tactical game will always benefit your progress much more, no matter at what level you play (unless you're already playing on a very high level with a shit cfg)

Perhaps you could explain me what 'rate' and 'maxpackets' do? Never really got it.
