I had this problem a few years ago (on the same setup). Three possible solutions:

1. Make absolutely sure its not your config. Remove all cfg files from your ql folder (dont forget qz and rep), reset everything to default.

2. Could be your graphics card. Check the temperatures, clean dust off the fan.

3. If the two above fail, format. Nothing else you can do. I tried everything, drivers, dx, registry cleaning, reinstall, reinstall with regcleaning, nothing helped.

I won't consider moving from it until windows 9, or if someone gives me a free win7.. _maybe_ win8.

Really though, win8 is a mess, and upgrading to win7 seems kinda lame as it will be outdated more quickly.

Completely worth it going from XP to win7. When I had XP some years ago, I decided to make the transition from XP to vista. Vista was actually the worst OS ever. Felt bloated and slow all the time, no matter what. Soon enough I decided to go back to XP which was still clearly superior compared to vista, especially for games and graphic software.

This all changed when Win7 came out. Win7 doesn't feature all the bloat and slowness that came with vista, but at the same time has the better stuff that Vista brought over XP. Also Microsoft is still supporting Win7 and will for a couple of years to come. Win 7 > XP in every single way, it is faster, more compatible with todays' software and supported.

You'd be living backwards still using XP anno 2013 in my opinion.

I've used windows 7 a plenty on other machines. I don't see what I'm missing by using XP for now. The main issue is microsoft ending support for it, and developers having to go through more hoops to develop on it, meaning less XP support, and more bugs. So far I am fine though.

There are some new versions of .NET Framework that aren't supported on XP (doesn't even install). You'll have to move sooner than later.

I went from XP to Linux some years ago (when the first Vista RC's came out and started to become obvious that MS was not on the right path anymore) and I don't think I'm going back in the next decades. ;)

Win 7 is the best OS atm for casual users that dont want to run fucking servers and so on.
Its great, its fast and so on. With Microsoft imo its every 2nd OS that is a good one.

I know w7 is good, I use it often on other people's machines.

I don't know what it's like for gaming, but I'm sure I could get it tweaked/set up alright.

Just for now XP does everything I need.

I dont think you'd need any kind of specific tweaking for gaming. Unless you are running an ancient machine or something. Other than that you really dont need any tweaks.

I always tweak my OS's.

Otherwise, take it up with c3.

XP SP3. It is fully updated.

I have had lots of problems (random 1 sec lag) with Windows updates. Dont Remember which update it was.... If u cant get rid of the lag by reinstalling gfxdrivers, use default cfg, search for virus, turn off antivirusprogram. Then you Should update to win 7

I like messing with stuff and I don't need m_filter anymore. Was a problem with mouse. Yeah I guess I am qualified to give an opinion. Other than that I don't understand.

probabaly u use wrong hz .... happens to me too when i try above 60hz, i get this weird stutter lag ...
just try setting it to 60 and see if it still stutters (even if u think ur monitor can do more ) .. i recently got a new monitor which was suppose to be 75hz, yet when i tried to play at that hz it would get those weird stutters.. guess it doesnt support 75hz on all resos ..

"wrong hz". Since when? My 2233rz is designed to play at 120hz. Q3 plays with no stuttering at 120hz. If it was because of that which I doubt, it would be QL's fault again.

I would rather have stuttering than the stupid input delay that randomly happens. Mouse input lags behind about 400ms. Really messes up my aim. Feels like I am drunk.

same thing has been happening to me for about a week or so, turn cg_lagometer on and take a look. i have heavy packetloss every 15 seconds making me freeze completely ingame. it's either me or the servers and i already switched between 2 pcs, 3 network devices and 2 os'es... all that is left is re-cabling the house? :d

nothing unusual going with pings and traceroutes to other servers though, so i doubt i'll do that next.

have been dealing with this for the past 6+ months. technicians have found no problems with my wiring. all of my packet loss happens in the last 3 hops to all affected servers.

what would you know, all problem hops are hosted by level3 in all cases.

i've got ping 'problems' for over 18 months now, eventhough i live next to the server (literally), i get routed over spain/poland to frankfurt. same thing with the .nl servers, i ping atleast 40-50ms to them eventhough my usual pings to these locations are around 10-15.

ql has been nothing but a pain for almost 2 years now, i've no idea why i should keep paying id for this crap :(

even if it's the providers fault, id should have far more leverage than me in dealing with them. the ql servers are hosted by i3d btw, http://noc.i3d.net/noc/

/edit: oh, but this is different! right now lots of people have huge packetloss issues and keep warping all over the place. this is on top of what i wrote above, yay quakelive.

Hi, so I pinpointed out what was causing the stuttering. I realized it always happened when I was switching to a weapon, not always but sometimes, changing from one weapon to another, caused this lag spike. I went to my cfg and removed everything on the weapon binds, only to leave the weapon number itself, ie:


bind e "weapon 7"

instead of

"weapon 7; cg_drawCrosshair 1; cg_crosshairSize 30; cg_fov 100.... etc"

It seems the extra information on the bind beyond the weapon number is causing these micro lag spikes. I don't know when this happened but i've used similar bindings since the OSP days, then throught CPMA and then throught QL and I never had a problem. I couldn't pinpoint when and why this is happening.
Oddly enough, I tested with CPMA and the same happens threre as well.

Other than this, the game remains perfectly smooth. But these micro spikes will for sure ruin your games.

Are your repconfig and qzconfig files set to read only / are their empty?

Ql likes to add numerous copies of the same variable(s) to qz/repconfig, especially if you exec your cfg manually (key bind, console). So the lag spikes are possibly caused by ql execing a variable several times at once whenever you change your weapon.

What you want to do is delete everything from qzconfig and repconfig, set them to read only and use autoexec. This also prevents ql from rewriting your accel / in_mouse settings on startup.

I just did and the same thing happens. When I was on default cfg, I noticed this happened even if I didnt change weapons. I think I need a new computer.

All that gap means the game was totally frozen.

If im not using anything beyond "weapon X" then it's perfectly smooth and I can switch between weapons as much as I want and it never happens.

If you're running Windows check your system log (right click Computer -> manage -> Event Viewer => Windows Logs). Check both the Application and System logs for errors. If you have any hardware that is failing or causing problems, it can cause hard locks and interrupts on your machine. The easiest example is a magnetic HD that is starting to die.

I just did this after triggering the lag spike and nothing is showing up.

I've fixed this in CPMA by moving my entire q3 folder to another hard disk (my newest one) now it's smooth all the time. The problem now is, r_gamma doesnt work and the game seems too dark. r_ignoreHWgamma 1 makes it better but im stuck at something that looks like r_gamma 1.0 and I want it brighter.

I want to know if I can install QL in another hard disk, im sure I will solve the stuttering problem this way.

Try to move the QL dir to your other HD and create a symlink to that folder at the location it was originally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link (If you're on XP or earlier OS, it's called a junction point. Same shit, just a different command. You can find a link to that in that article too.)

If I just install QL Prism in my other HD, would this be doing any effect or not?

You said you were sure it would solve it. I just pointed a way to run the game from a different hard drive. Try it and see. :)

I think that QLPrism's install location won't matter. But the location of QL's pak files might. And I was referring to that folder. I would try to move that to a different HD.

Sweet I think it's working, I didn't have a single stuttering for an entire duel. How should I fix the gamma stuff in Q3 now tho? Ive tried with quake3e and same happens.

I guess that that doesn't have anything to do with the location of the install. Have you tried to move autoexec.cfg and other configs out of your Q3 folder, change r_gamma in the console and execute vid_restart?

ive posted this elsewhere before - i had similar issues that just suddenly appeared out of nowhere on a similar machine (this was a few years back now).

Turns out mine was related to having a 2nd monitor connected / enabled.

if i disabled the 2nd monitor, the spikes stopped, bizarre but true.

Only using a single monitor there.
