Also it has been reported plenty of times the grand finals only had 5k viewers when it started, which was the peak of the event,....until a dota streamer told his to watch the game. 5k is not impressive, even for quake.

DH is not obliged to lose money and they did lose a lot with quake already, most probably plenty of times. They deserve a statue, not criticism.

CoD is only 1/10 quality of Quake. Garbage game that appeals to garbage level kids. Starcraft and Quake 3 were released around the same time. The SC2 streams are packed and it's fun to watch, but it's an RTS game though. Which FPS is worthy of the spotlight if not QuakeLive? Madness.

Don't get me wrong on this, but those arguments were surpassed a long time ago and are a bit emotional. People like what they like, 'better' is subjective (actually using your line of thought then QW should be in not QL) and, most importantly, this all comes down to business (unless you/we fund it).

As for other games, Starcraft, CS and CoD reinvented themselves whereas QL is practically Q3 and without e-sports support from the developer, besides their own event. For both reasons I don't believe quake 'deserves' more mainstream attention, especially the first one.

Nobody on this site thinks quake is worse than cod. Everybody thinks the game deserves more viewers because of its quality and the players deserve more money because of their high skill levels.

Some people however are realistic and realize that without sponsors, every event is charity and dreamhack is a business. In the end, they're in it to make a profit. Quake is no longer profitable for them and probably hasn't been for years, so be glad that we got to see it at dh for so many events and that this announcement hasn't been made sooner.

When bjergsen (top EU mid player) recently joined TSM (top NA team) he had 70k viewers on his stream while playing solo queue (pub games). QL finals reaching 1/7 of that for the biggest lan in the world is simply just not good enough in 2013. We have to face the fact that there isn't an audience for quake that makes sponsors interested in putting in their money since the exposure they get back is so small. Frankly, I'm surprised QL has stuck around for this long given how small of a game it is.

It boggles the mind still that people watch LOL players. I played the game for years so i am not 'against' it. But its just a dumbed down dota, and i wouldnt even watch dota. The game has 4 abilities and some items, holy shit mad skills r us...no wait...the other thing.

The FPS genre is never coming back to the forefront of gaming, at least not ever on a PC. Somehow it has become a console genre, all future major FPS titles are never going to be designed without taking the limitations of consoles into account.

True we don't know and can't really predict what's gonna happen with Ghost sales, but tons of competition I'm not sure of that, I just checked the FPS released when Ghost was out, I only saw Deadfall Adventures, and some dlcs for Payday 2, and some games that only a few people know about xD. Now let's wait a little bit more, I guess this January 2014 we will know more (due to XBONE and PS4 releases) ^^.

Yes aim might be limited, however a big part of this is due to how input is done. Change it and it could be better.

It has a lot to do with piracy. Also consoles are going to reach a wider audience regardless of PC piracy. Valve has surprised a lot of people with how successful Steam is. So there are definitely people who want to buy games they like.

I see nothing wrong in CSGO I hope it will go bigger to show everybody that fps games still are important in esport. Even I like it in some way. But my love is for more dynamic fps games. CS is just different. And imo nothing wrong with that. And I said everybody before... CSGO will grow... with skins, crowdfunding etc.

Just like in other older games, quake gameplay is long lasting and complex only because of luck. It's a matter of reading documents about Q1, Q2 and Q3 to arrive at that conclusion. Nowadays everything is taken into account, making a more consistent product that doesn't necessarily have a low skill cap, as we've seen plenty of times.

The biggest changes for a "new quake" (fast paced fps) that is successful won't be in gameplay, but would be the following:
1.- It won't be a part of the quake franchise.
2.- It will have to be realistic looking, not QW or Q3 style.

Some quake-only people will never try it, but it's their loss. Right now games are way better than in the past millennium across all genres, just that some aren't the very biggest thing anymore, some aspects have evolved (though still there) and some elements were revamped now that it's common knowledge that they are bad game design..

No one likes to say it though but the quake series itself has followed the cod footsteps, just not as well executed and with some stubborn attitude to change and add stuff that is entirely or almost harmless to what we like.

It doesn't have to be bf4 with seeing through walls, but the 1999 graphics with the design that no one likes outside us just doesn't cut it.

Honourable exception was q4 which was harder to play ( aiming more at "esports" then q3). Faster, more complex movement, the possibility to get around corners without loosing speed, smaller hitboxes, weapon respawn time 15 sec on all maps, tl 15, slower weapon switch.
However it failed to catch on, partly because of the technically bad state at release up to 1.3, partly because even the "hardcore" quakers rather play an less demanding game, q3 in this case (not that q3 is bad or "easy", don't get me wrong).
id wasn't blind to see this -> ql as a further simplified case of q3.

I was going to post a similar suggestion. If we start donating now, with some emphasis every month helped by the casters (zoot, faceit, etc) we can get to a very relevant prizepool within a year ! I'll be gladly donating aswell as I've been for this dh prizepool. If we get to a decent prizepool before this june we surely can make the dh headadmins think about it. They would not have to put any money in it appart from setting up a place for players to play and squeeze quake in into some dreamarena-like stage for playoffs or even just the finals...

If however the prizepool doesn't convince the dh headadmins, we can always decide to use that money on other events.

From this thread, it seems like id underestimated what they can charge for subscriptions. Either that, or people really shouldn't bitch about the current low prices.

So it's not just about one month or one year, it's either long term or nothing at all, after all we're talking about quakers here. 5 years from now they'll have spent close to 500$ for this one game. People should at least be grandfathered in after said number of years - the past 3) and not be forced to continue to pay indefinetely. The whole subscription is broken for this game.

One time payment with the current "id pays for the server" model is simply impossible. So they would have to drop the server hosting and leave it to the players. Most people indeed wouldn't have to pay $500 in 5 years (which is bullshit btw, even 5x 1 year Pro is less than half of that). But some would have to pay about a thousand bucks in the same time to host a little server by themselves.

Not to mention that in a situation like this, there would be no development either. By that simple "one time payment" idea, you remove pretty much everything QL has special over Q3. Why would people even stick with QL?

No one supported the modernized Quake, which was Quake Wars the game had a lot of great things going for it, I think people just never gave it a go because it was lacking a duel element which is truly what sets quake apart from any FPS game. So I have trouble believing people when they say they would play a modern Quake game when they already passed over one. Unreal Tournament met the same demise when it tried to enter the modern FPS genre ut3 was a huge failure. I don't see any way you can modernize Quake Duel and make it appealing to today's gamer.

COD2 to COD4 (ww2 to current/futuristic) follows the same line of gameplay, like Q3 to Q4 multiplayer. The biggest change was in design but the game itself is not much different.

id was beat with its own engine is the bottom line, call of duty makers used the id engine better than id software, rtcw would have blown away the cod franchise if any one at id had any foresight into the future, they delegated RTCW future to splash damage basically. Now a new RTCW is coming out 5 years too late and its not even being made by id and has no multiplayer.

The game types are different because rtcw/et failed to evolve and now its dead like brink no evolution

CS:GO is doing a great job getting people interested in the genre. Supporting it in favor of ql will at least insure that the FPS genre continues in e-sports. Ql has had its chance and failed whereas CS:GO still has room to grow. It's too bad id couldn't do what Valve did, but then again PC gaming is dead so why would they when they themselves are turning to consoles.

What do you mean by support CS:GO? It is a fundamentally different game than Quake and lump both into the very general genre of "FPS" doesn't do either game justice. I bought GO on Steam. I gave it a try. But staring at a corner waiting for some schmuck to appear isn't my idea of entertainment.

I agree and have no idea why people parrot this bullshit of supporting one game to help another. Supporting CS:GO will never, ever, help Quake or a Quake-like game, it's absurd to think otherwise. id's legacy is already on the way down the toilet. Carmack left, Rage wasn't up to standards (especially the initial PC launch; an utter joke riddled with issues), Doom4 running into huge problems...

Honestly, I'm shocked that id software isn't realizing that eSports can build a game for them. They have the name of Quake to ride on. Hell, even Quake4 was pushed for awhile and that game sucked.

Big ships take a long time to sink, I been at places and seen it happen, you can't change it.

When top level people do things wrong, you can't change it, because you are perceived as wrong if you do. Even when they are proven wrong, it takes several times for it to get accepted because the first one is seen as a one off as they trade on past glory. In thatr time, people become unhappy, leave in droves and dev time takes ages and the initial truth is always exposed in the end.

As great as carmack is (and I regard him v highly) its likely he has made mistakes and that's finally been accepted but it would never be said.

Why isn't idsoftware like that, they had a big headstart, even valve got their tech from them. Somewhere along the way, id missed a trick and John is to blame for a big part of that based on his position.

IMO the big problem at id towards for a long time has been their engine. They built the game around the engine, it should not be that way.

But is it the fault of Carmack for id relying on his technology like they were a bunch of religious zealots praying to the altar of Carmack? I think it's been documented quite readily that Carmack, aside from Quake 3, id software was essentially just a forum for him to experiment with graphic technology. He never fully cared about the game, per se, but more so about what the game could be with his technology as the back bone.

I don't know. I don't blame Carmack for id's shortcomings, and I really don't think anyone should. Do we really think that Carmack is the reason why Quake is in the state its in now? Meh, maybe, maybe not. I guess I'm not really talking about id software as a whole, but more so the simple reality of the Quake name at this point in time. Even Syncerror made a comment saying that with Todd Hollenshead's departure, things are "different" when it comes to Quake. Wouldn't shock me if that pony-tailed twat was a huge reason why Quake was sidelined, and the idea for more console based boredom was pushed ahead using Carmack's technology.

It surprises me that id doesn't see the potential in Quake, whether that means totally rethinking the game and creating "Quake 5" or revamping QuakeLive. Yes, it is difficult to master, but why'd we play Quake3? Because it was fun to learn and not necessarily 'hard' to learn the basics.

I can't stress how often I hear people in twitch chat, or in the other games that I play, make comments about Quake, and then I'll tell them about Quake Live and they're all, "WHAT THE FUCK? QUAKE IS STILL PLAYED?"

Meh, I don't know. I realize Quake has survived, and our tight knit little community will probably always live on, but it deserves more than that, I guess.

This "diamond" you speak of already made its profit a long time ago. The player base is too thin for QL to be a mainstream game, the spectator base is too thin for sponsors to care, the engine is super outdated (even cypher said so himself) so why would any sponsors even bother with it when it cant even showcase a tenth of the power the new stuff thats out there on the market.
Quake live had this coming by a mile and it doesnt surprise me at all that this is the end of DH QL. Me and my friend drove up to dh just to watch the finals and the casting area was empty all day up until the grand finals (were like a maximum of 20 spectators before) and at the grand finals it was fully seated.

QL's biggest problem is that it isnt inviting to new and young players, basically everybody thats playing the game now has been playing it since like 07 or 08 (probably even back in the q3 days back in 2000). The game doesnt look good, the game is VERY complicated to get into and you get destroyed without the slightest chance of victory or even understanding what you did wrong and if you ever played CA on random servers (not high elo ones) you know as well as i do that the lower baseline players are just shit, both in manners and in execution and they tell everyone to l2p.

I've been playing quake since '99 and the best quake ever was q4 hands down to me. The playerbase was thick at the beginning, the action was very fast paced, gameplay was super fun, especially TDM. But when q4 came alot of the oldschool q3'ers were like "sliding? buh, sucks" "no tankjr model? the model is so small! Sucks" "different movement than q3? SUCKS!" "this game sucks since its not q3 with a better gfx engine basically!" <- the reasons why quake didnt evolve.
Like someone stated before, DH is a business, if a game doesnt bring in profit (5k viewers on stream is what i heard which isnt even a tenth of what LoL had) and they actually lose money on it then why should they keep having it? It doesnt make sense. The game is awesome dont get me wrong, i love quake as much as the next person but this is no surprise.

What we need is a new fast paced action shooter with new graphics to attract the young ones and simple start up mechanics with a deep highlvl competitive play.

Except Quake4 sucked because it actually did suck. It wasn't an evolution, it was id pawning the great name of Quake to some hack job company that fucked it up.

Netcode is fixable in a heartbeat though. Just remove the unlagged and it's already fine. Ofcourse other options are also fine (like add predicted hitbeeps or force autotimenudge 1).

i cant even remember what sync or whoever it was explained about the sound. maybe they did it to give veterans a challenge. but more likely they just broke it :x

I think sound was more consistent in q3..... In ql it sometimes feels like you shouldn't hear some sounds but you do....
But anyway sound is not a major issue... The times I make a wrong call because the sound seems "messed up" is only once every 50 games or so... and usually the mistakes don't matter much either.

The times that netcode is a decisive factor in online games is like 2 out of 3 games though. (sometimes in my favor and sometimes in the others')

I remember some people talking a while back that the sound files used in qlive were compressed a lot more than what they were in q3. I know what Sync has said below, but I respectfully disagree. Whether it was vanilla q3, cpma, osp, 3wave, ra3, I never, never had a problem with locating an enemy by sounds until qlive.

There was no concept of up/down in Quake 3 either, unless you were playing a mod with an updated sound system. idtech 3 only has support for simple stereo, left/right.

my headphones are only stereo as well... but sounds in Q3 seem to be affected by "ceilings/floors" a ton more than in QL. It seems that QL completely disregards vertical objects between the origin of the sound and the player. Whereas Q3 often did not.
The walls are generally regarded the same though...

It could ofcourse be that cpma / osp made some sort of alteration to the vertical stuff....
But chances are also that it's messed up because of something else..... Maybe the "area's" for which you get information are larger in QL? (And therefor you hear more?)

I actually never took a look at the sound system of Q3 so I wouldn't know why this, to me, feels different. Also I am oblivious to the alterations of osp / cpma on this point.

QL netcode is about 1000x better than CS:GO so making it marginally better isn't going to change shit with QL's complete lack of retaining power for new players.

it heavily encourages +forward LG plays. And the worse the connections become the more you're encouraged and rewarded to play +forward with LG.
That is because the fundaments of the game change due to the netcode.
Imo the server should have a completely valid&consistent game being played on the server, and that game must be "the same" regardless of pings.
With unlagged that's not the case.... the server side of the game is not consistent at all and often has states which never happen on either of the clients. This fucks up quake beyond recognition.

I think it could still happen if it's crowdfunded, at least partly(not unlike this DH where crowdfunded money were additional to the prizepool which really did nothing for organisators)

I meant from Poland. You won't find a German who pings below 20 to Frankfurt easily, whereas if you join a public CA server in Poland you rarely see pings above 20.

Well, Cod2 is dying slowly since 2010, the TLS lan just gave the players some good time, but the game didnt really rise again.

but i think QL would still have a chance if they'd seek out other chances than just DH etc...there are alot of Lan events which might pick up QL if they would talk to them 'bout it.

Yes, imo Quake still have a chance. But still it need casuals, but subscription models isnt helping... for noob like me its hard to find enemies on my skill level to learn :(

imo CoD is failing mostly because of CS, its just too similiar, with more experience in esport field, and more 'pro'. Quake is nothing like other games, thats why it got more chances.

QL or no QL at DH, it's still my absolute top game.

I love SC2 and I played Heroes of Newerth, and even with a huge amount of idiots in both HoN and QL, somehow I keep coming back only to QL.

Maybe that's because Quake 1 was one of the first games I played through again and again as a kid and was fascinated by the world Romero and Carmack managed to create. It was an unbeatable atmosphere and awesome gameplay mechanic for that time. What I also loved about it were the sound effects. They really blended perfectly.

Then I played Q2, but only until I could get my hands on Q3 and eventually OSP/CPM (played a lot on german and austrian vTo servers until I moved to Australia). I remember playing til my eyes bled and my heart started palpitating because of too much coffee that I drank hoping that I'd be able to stay up a bit longer and frag more fuckers.

I tried so many FPS games. For me, Quake is the one with a soul. At least one of the rare ones Maybe it's a good thing it didn't get recycled. Maybe it's ok to have to wait a bit longer for QL 2.0.

Same goes for Half-Life. It's the closest quality FPS to Quake IMHO. But it's not Quake.

Is there a reason why the Quake Live area was so well-hidden at Dreamhack? I asked someone who went there how the crowd looked, and he told me he didn't even know it was being hosted.

There's not any reason that I know of at least. They wanted to do something different, but the idea wasn't to hide the quake live area..

imo they made some mistakes in this tournament. it was a good tournament overall dont get me wrong. 1st thing was the format, bo5 in group stages was redundant, instead it shouldve been bo3 which would save time for the much more importat playoffs which shouldve been DOUBLE ELIMINATION LIKE QUAKECON. Too see players like K1llsen and DaHanG battle it out at groupstages only to get unlucky playoff draws and go out on minor mistakes vs Evil and Rapha, is just sad in my book. Double elimination gives players a fair chance and is more hype cos it allows for losers bracket comebacks. Double Elimination is now standard at Quakecon, Starcraft, Street Fighter etc events for a reason.
2nd this is a minor gripe but there were no followup on the community donations, I mean if you've donated your hard earned money, then at least its nice to see the players receiving the money with a minor smile on their face, even if they're faking it.
3d I know Quake community is small, and I dig the fancy venue, but it was TOO ISOLATED from the rest of the event. imo its more interesting see the players cramped up in some part of the main area, cos it feels like they are part of a larger event which is cool, also it allows for more casual viewers.
btw I think part of the fun with Dreamhack Quake tournaments is the hype of the bigger name and event, having said that even if they drop it I would gladly donate to a communitydriven end of the year tournament. Therefore its much better if Dreamhack management just plain make it official if they dropped the game for good so community action could start.

You are forgetting that they closed the venue for all but finals, which was just a bit weird imo.

Double elimnation for LANs is nice.
