Couple of hints:

- There are plenty of less fortunate people out there who due to their unpleasant existences have turned into angsty hatemongers who release their frustration online by trying to push people down in order to make themselves feel better, i.e: beating a newcomer in QL and insulting them afterwards. There is a simple solution which involves turning off chat: /cg_teamChatsOnly 1

- The matchmaking system is flawed so you're just going to have to get used to getting roflstomped more often than not. Just try to die the least times possible, even if it means running away the whole game. Make it survival practice instead of a grind!

- Be sure to add everyone who you enjoyed playing with to your friendslist at the end of every day.

- You can occasionally load up a practice match against Xaero on campgrounds, and try not to give away a single frag (trying no to die a single time will make you focus more on items and positioning than simply trying to win). Do this every so often and see how your skill improves.

Play in faceit cups for low skilled players (level 3 or something I can't remember), it's a great tool to find some similar skilled players (I think their rating system works pretty well now) and then have the ability to play against them on a more regular basis.

Maybe being a premium user could help to get rid of the profesionnal tierslummers. Anyway if you want to get serious about duel you should probably invest in a premium membership.

And then play with poeple with similar Elo to yours. If you click on the server, Elo will be shown there, besides players names. As you've played only a couple of matches it might still not be representing your skill, but it will converge soon.

I saw you played with a guy with 1500 Elo, which is quite a challenge for someone starting to duel. Just avoid players with skill that much higher than yours, and it'll be more fun for you :)

It's sad people are calling you noobs after losing. :( That's just silly. I'm not very good but when I run into people I can easily beat, some of them will ask me what sort of things they can do. Hopefully, you can run into someone nice to give you some tips. Don't be afraid to ask as well, we're not all assholes.

EDIT: Also, find these people and friends list them. You can add me "wormed" if you want. I don't play much lately as I go in waves on activity, but if I'm ever on, I'll duel ya. You can learn from people better than you... it hurts, but you need that just as much as you need same/lower skilled players.

IMHO you'll fare best with the stuff mentioned here, and additionally:

- check opponent elo
- check opponent games played before readying up
- add opponents from your own skill range that aren't total shitheads, so you can arrange games in the future and talk about your games

There's no match making in QL. Well, there used to be. The duel detective was a match making tool. QL now only has skill estimation means and a little bit of skill matching (4 tiers in non-duel modes, pretty much no skill matching on duel apart from the terrible arrows/checkmark).

Play FFA first. Learn item timings while playing that.

After you start winning every FFA game, go play some CTF and get some movement skills into your game by trying to cap.

After you start capping a ton and winning games you can play some CA and get some aim and weapon combination into your game. After you start topping ca games. Go play TDM and put all your skills together. And after you become a TDM beast, then you can try duel.

It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn't. You gain skills easier this way instead of just playing duel(when ur a newb)

I regularly go into duel without timing or headphones and smash duelers that have started duel in quakelive and only played it for 3 years. It's because they haven't sharpened up all of quake skills in order to play duel properly.

it's a problem :( there should be TDM for noobs but theres not enough noobs for that.

I think even if you're new to TDM but you have a solid knowledge of movement / aim / timing then you can do okay.

Newbs are still there, the problem IMO is that no one cares about making a pickup channel for them, so they have a choice between two bad options: playing pointless public games or ruining a 'skilled' pickup game.

I have CTF in mind but I'm sure it's the same for TDM.

1. Whether we want it or not, #tdmpickup is the only replacement for TDM publics and I feel personally responsible to keep it this way. Newcomers are welcome.

2. We have separate "skilled" pickup type for players who don't want to play with noobs. You won't be allowed into "skilled" pickup - they're restricted by rating. So you can't ruing a "skilled" pickup.

3. We balance teams automatically. This means that in normal pickups, unless you're a real troll who tries to lose the game on purpose (*cough* CMSS), your skill doesn't really matter. As long as you really try, it's fine.

4. I don't know how it can even be true in CTF. My opinion? Penetration of trolls and whiners among ctfers is much higher. Some people just hate the idea that some soulless computer program is actively trying to make them win only 50% of their games.

Yeah that's what I was thinking about TDMpickup too (theres elite pickup etc). But I guess what he was getting at is that really really new people can't strafe, stop to aim, stop to turn around etc. Thats why I thought it was important to mention he should at least know how to strafe, basic timing and weapons before pickups can be enjoyable :/

I took this in context of a guy who's played his share of FFA (so knows how weapons and powerups look like, can strafe jump to 500 ups etc. ;)).

I don't think he really meant a pickup channel for "walk mode" noobs. It's not even needed - this phase takes just weeks in life of every player :)

I'm sure you mean it, so it's kinda true since you are an admin, but I doubt that a majority of div1/div2 people playing there share the same view on that subject. And IMO these folks are perfectly right.

During the Q3 days we used to kick/ban players who quite obviously didn't have the level to play on a pickup channel. Even decent/good players without communication binds were often treated that way.

It make sense if you know that pickup games were originally created precisely in order to give to the competitive players the possibility to play something which was as close as possible to a clan war, with random people, almost 24/7.

You clearly can't achieve that if people who are new to the game, and/or have no binds, and/or are clueless when it comes to teamplay, etc., are allowed to add. It's just a waste of time for everyone, and it generates a lot of dramas and whine.

That's why I keep thinking that (real) newb channels are desperately needed. A channel where absolutely everyone is welcome. Complete beginners, average players, casual players, but also 2500 elo players if they are willing to play there and don't plan to act like arrogant leets on that particular chann if they lose a game or something.

The tdmpickup/ctfpickup current approach looks like a bad compromise to me. A fake solution. Newcomers are more needed than welcome there, if you get what I mean.

Sure, then the activity increases (that's the whole point), but the amount of lousy games too. I could be wrong about tdmpickup but my guess is that everyone adds to the 'normal' pickup, and most of these players dislike to have to play with tier 3's.

I didn't understand the last part of your post. I've seen hundreds of random people joining my public 'premium' CTF servers so it's pretty obvious to me that a newb channel could be popular (more than ctfpickup).

Thanks for the invite, but don't get me wrong: this post wasn't about me. I've played a few games on tdmpickup, just for the sake of playing some new maps, and I did fine, I guess. I've played there because I knew it was a more or less newb-friendly chann and I stopped to do so for the very same reason, when I realised that I had to carry one or even two weak(er) teammates in every game, whereas I don't know myself what to do at all in TDM and mostly run with gauntlet/MG, or SG if I'm lucky.

I have no experience in TDM but played some #tdmpickup games.
It was a good experience, the teams are usualy well balanced.

I only had to deal with one freak, but if you can deal with things like "OMG R_Type faggot, buy a brain" coming from an helpless soul, you'll have a lot a fun.

a lot of noobs like me were playing TDM when it was 5 seconds weapon respawn time in pub servers, bigest problem about TDM also is that the matches are too long for noobs 20 mn is like marathon. + there should be a balance system avoiding 3v4 or w/e with queue system to join or w/e adding bots idk <- that is a big problem in pub TDM.

The "noob" TDM servers had 12 second weapon respawn.

I don't think 20 minutes is a marathon. Most of us can play for hours non stop if only it's enjoyable. The problem in publics was people ragequitting, not dying from exhaustion :)


Which is why in #tdmpickup we:

1. balance teams,

2. play with mercylimit set (so even on someone's bad day, you don't play hopeless for too long),

3. tempban ragequitters :)

You seem to think TDM solution is pickup irc channel. I think that is exactly what is killing it. I remember it was 5s respawn time, maybe it was a long time ago during beta. But then it had a lot more pub TDM.

If you guys were playing pub TDM that would solve it, just spawn some servers so we can kick players midgame. I think there is much more arguments toward irc killing pub TDM than the other way around.

I remember it was also 'in' to play CA pickup irc. I am happy it is over. That was average at best, +losing time connecting to the server etc, picking teams, waiting for people to come back from kitchen or toilets or w/e rolling joints and then waiting for them to 'warmup' or just readyup that's not ideal. In fact i think that is very bad. Game should be easily accesible. irc is so 1999.

You guys are too elitists. Don't complain noone plays TDM. In every other FPS games TDM is much more popular than CTF, only in QL it's the other way around maybe it's time to think about why it's like that.

It really was 12s on the non-"pro" servers. I believed those servers lived until Aug 2010. There was a "Fast TDM" devpick in 2010 with 5 second weapon spawn, but that lived 2 days ;)

Please, it's not us killing public TDM. Public TDM was killed by id Software and we had nothing to do with it. I actually come from public TDM, it's my birthplace! I've played like 4000 of those alone.

But they were always full of quitters (what's your QL account, let's see your quits!), so I've joined #tdmpickup. Then, when publics were murdered, I've worked hard to make pickups a viable alternative for _everyone_.

We don't lose time with picking teams, they're automatically generated.

The name "pickup" stuck, but in reality what we run is organized publics with our own implementation of shuffle.

We're nowhere near elitist. You must be confusing us with #ctfpickup ;) With the small community TDM has, we can't afford to be elitist :)

#tdmpickup community is really wide in terms of skill levels and the automated teams help a lot to give everyone a nice experience

Duel is like a mother in law, you have to try real hard to convince her to love you, once you've done that in the end she still hates you. People will flame you at low tier, med tier and high tier because duel brings out the worst in everyone.

Install the ELO script mentioned above using hook manager. Then add anyone and everyone near your ELO that you've dueled and eventually you'll always have someone to start up a duel with when you log in.

Months like this one are much slower for standard dueling because none of the map picks are very good. So it'd be wise to get at least a premium account. Even better if you have pro because you'll have more people to duel against if you can invite standard players and can make private servers without intruders.

Otherwise stay away from too much CA and play FFA, there you can focus on timing MH/RA while still improving your aim.

nah, I like that its challenging. My advice is to don't care about stats and try to enjoy even when loosing, also wins, but at least from every frag.

well, i also was about to drop the game again and just play csgo or whatever, but i think its ok/good nowadays to start out with QL, since there will be Reflex/Reborn in the future, and Quake will help to prepare for those games, so i cant see a reason to not play it.

the catching up used to be easier probably, and playing quake is kind of like riding a bike.

quakelive sucks as fuck compared to lol or sc2, unless you have years of experience. technically it's the best game in the world (at certain level ql is more challanging, and gives you as much fun as no other game does), but in practice it's shit for newcomers and it's not even that it's hard but the whole beside-game structure just isn't properly prepared, meh, it just isn't even there... you get a server browser and a strict game itself, nothing more, and don't even count on getting more

there is one and only thing that might help you here, wich is qlranks.com, but heh... even this was ruined by id soft with last patch, where a weak ago i just installed qlprism and everything was perfect, now there is some shitty launcher in wich i have to spend 20 times more time to install all the useful scripts

the only reason you can play for is your own enjoyment and the feeling that you are better or dominating your opponents.
There is no practical point in playing QuakeLive.
So If you are willing to spend 1-2 years in getting better so you can win a good amount of games go ahead,otherwise pretty pointless.

Playing duel he can probably get to a respectable level in a year or two time where he can maybe beat 2100 ELO players,and that's If he learns quickly and practices smart without attaining bad habits.
And even If he plays a lot there's no guarantee he will become good
there's some good examples with 2-3 months playtime and 4-5k duel games and still not really good.
He can also play duel for fun,but when you are not playing duel seriously its kinda one sided rape for the other guy so its not really fun.
Thats why duel is pointless.As for other modes he is more than free to play TDM and CTF much more enojable than duel.

Quake duel is more about not getting hit than putting out damage, and even the people that do put out a lot of damage do so without getting hit. No one goes into fights trying to take damage for a frag.

You can keep games close against much better players by playing defensively and timing well, which, if you are a beginner I would recommend you do.

Otherwise play CA or TDM rather until your aim is up to scratch.

Also, after looking at your results, honestly they aren't that bad. I've been playing quake since 1995 and I lose to 2000+ elo people with those scores. Hell, sometimes I lose to people at my elo with those sorts of scores (of course, sometimes I rape too).

However, you will always want to try keep the frag count below 20 against a much better player. A mini lesson from Ph4ntom the other day pointed out that off the spawn you have 2 goals, survive and get a weapon, but survive always comes first. Even if the guy blocks you in a small area without a weapon and you ARE going to die, you need to delay that from happening as much as possible. This keeps the frag count down, but more importantly, IT GIVES TIME TO ALLOW THE ITEMS TO APPEAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAP.

If the guy is coming to spawn frag you after every frag, you just need to delay that spawn frag long enough so you can pick up red or mega on the other side of the map when he frags you. Even good players will start to have trouble fragging you if you are getting armour.

To add on, it not impossible for you to get good, people have come from sc before and learnt how to be REALLY GOOD at quake within a year, just don't expect to become amazing in less than 6 months though, it's a tough game.

ps. playing against better players is a good thing, you learn shit from playing equal players when you are both noobs.

you know zsx ? and szr, these guys are 2000+ elo and are former CA players. They are good at duel too mainly cause of their combat skills.

ofc duel play differently than CA, but when you learn to have the perfect lg (or let's say aim in general) you can reproduce it at duel and force situations where the opponent has only 2 options, either leaving the fight but giving up some major items, or stay in the fight but most probably lose it.

I did the following for a while in QL and improved really quickly while doing it:
-Try to play people with 75 to 150 more elo than you
-At first, don't even try to win. Instead, try to stay alive
-Once you can stay alive against them, start trying to put out damage while staying alive
-Then start challenging for control
-Learn not to give up control
-Start from the top against people who beat people who used to beat you


For me, it felt less draining this way, because you can feel content when you reach your goals for a game (for instance, give up less than 5 frags).

Hi, im also a noob that it's trying to duel, even in south america that the quake community its a lot smaller than europe, so here is my advice of what u should do if you are taking it seriously.

1. Buy pro so you can cast servers on any map and invite people. Most noobs to duel dont have pro account and are scared/tired of playing duel on maps they dont know, so if there is no server with a good map they just play CA or FFA. Hell, even if they duel 1 game and then no good map can be voted they just disconnect. If you buy pro and start a small noob duel community at your servers (that u should leave up at spectator when u leave), everyone will have a better time.

2. Take 10 mins now and then to browse ongoing public duels that have a grey/green/yellow arrow and join just to convince them to join your server (so they can choose maps) and friend list.

3. Take another 10 mins to join grey/green/yellow FFA or CA games to spam (without being too anoying) something like "I make servers DUEL for N00bs, add me"

4. Every time you join to quake (even if you want to play CA) create your server and invite all your duelling friend list (you can even invite offline friends).

5. Start duelling. Dont be an ass if you win or loose. Keep inviting people that you always loose to, so you dont leave them outside your community. Every friend in your list matters and its a possible skill matched opponent in the near future.

6. Try to explain pepople that everyone should play and if someone better joins your server he can play 1 time vs everyone and then join spectator to go back to que queue.

Hope this works for you, i started with this 1 week ago and im already seeing more skill matched action than ever.

on the other hand you have players like me and 95% of the userbase here i guess. im probably decent at duel. when quakelive came out and i started playing, there were lots of worse players, so i have a high win percentage and am not used to losing at all. whcih in turn makes me quit most of the time i do lose a duel :) so ill never become a better player

we can play a game if ztn is free again for everyone.... I will show you the basic +back moves.

I played Quake 3 once and started with Quake Live last year. My elo is about 1000.

My best advice is simple. There are thousands of people out there who will beat you and me with 30-0 and more on any map.

What you should do is find a few people you can add to your friends list that is at your level. Trust me. There is people out there at the same level.

This is what made QL more fun for me. Now I have a few people on my friend list that is at my level. So much more fun then losing with 30-0 all the time. Usually 30 - minus 4 or something. I always fall into lava on lost world or crater on other maps :)

Duel has always been like that and every decent dueler had to overcome these newbie struggles.

Just keep on playing, dont ever look at your elo and other people elos. Despite getting owned, you'll notice that every couple of days, you are more and more aware of *why* you keep getting crushed and start doing less and less mistakes.

Getting a practice partner is fine when youre on an ok level, but playing other newbies now wont teach you anything, it only leads to developing bad habits.

I was also another player only interested in duel coming from another game/games. Here's a bunch of stuff I did in the past(warning I wasn't really good or people thought I cheated? shrugs)

- Learn the abbreviations, most are self explanatory eg. rl = rocket launcher, ya = yellow armour. Helps for reading/talking about ql

- Learn to use the weapons properly and the beginer gotcha's
o lg has a buzz sound that people can hear
o rail close distance is usually a bad idea
o know how to strafe jump
o Have all weapons binded, my rule is nothing past 4 or 5, and have the favourite weapons or weapons you need quickly to important keys/buttons that aren't't affected by wasd (eg. my rail = shift and rocket = space, jump ofc is mouse2, I don't use zoom)



For aim - host a listen server(bot match ffa) type devmap Anymap in console, type these 3 things in console "god", "give all", give quad damage(spam it) and add bots at varying difficulties and prioritize bots that use rl the most (you'll learn them eventually, doesn't matter to much) and preferably none with rail because on space maps they can shoot you off lol and then you'd have to retype god/give all/give quad damage.

I liked dm17(devmap longestyard) specifically for this cause it has jumppads and medium/long distance vertical and horizontal. I did the following routine a lot when I first started, so kill 100 or 50 bots each stage(less if no quad damage or no energy I guess)
1 ) - free style run around shoot what ever
2 ) - rail spot, use rail (go for consistency not speed)
3 ) - jump back, free style (do a left 360's each shot --- depends what sensitivity you use of course(can skip)) This helps lossen/warm up wrist andsometimes you find yourself doing 360's and preaimming/planning for other targets its pretty cool.
4 ) - rail spot, use rail aim at mega and shoot then snapping back to mega after the kill --- helps flick aim I guess, eventually its a flick/flick motion
5 ) - jump back free style (do a right 360's each shot)
6 ) - goto rl(either side) small flick rail's alternating direction's(up,left,etc) ---- If I couldn't find a bot flying off a jump pad I would just hover/offset a inch from them(this stage isn't necessary as flick rails are rare in duel I just found it fun)
7 ) - again rl area(either side) switch to machine gun(mg) strafe side to side fast or about 1-2 players width constantly and mg anything but generally at a distance ---- helps pratice small mouse tweaks/movements(my hand is typically tense and both thumb and pinky touching mousepad to help slow mouse movement - my preference) and also helps you learn how to compensate/hold your aim due moving - tracing while moving/moving side to side should become second nature.
8 ) - optional(for some reason I found this so fun) hit the middle jump pad use either mg/lg(quad and killing optional) kill/hit what ever you can reach ----- maybe useless but definitely practices vertical aiming and compensating
9 ) - free style lg, jump around like you're crazy and make sure you're getting 90% lg when they're on jumppads(bonus points if you finish them with rail when they fall off the map)

Notes: Dodge rockets that fly at you and bonus points if you jump over them.

For map knowledge(duel)



- Try to find a resource that tells you where all the spawns as it makes this faster. Again devmap duelMap(in ffa gametype) spawn bunch of bots console commands "give all", "god". Running for lg ammo and dieing is just a waste of time :) Run around the map and camp at places where you think/know a spawn is. As long as other bots are killing each other you'll have the chance of witnessing a spawn location regardless of the proper distance. Try to get creative and combo stuff like shoot nades/rockets at medium distance and rail when you see them spawn. This won't make you a spawn king but it gives you a visual reference.

- Create a listen duel server have a bot in there and try now to force spawns. fyi spawn locations have changed in the past which is annoying when you make overviews/screenshots of them :>

- Spectate good players watch for their favorite force spawn setup's and tricks. eg. ztn rl-ya shooting at that corner spawn and hitting the tele. This helps give a indication of what force spawns are typically probable and or worth doing(eg. not compromising position for an item or w.e)

- Pick a map for a day or week. Run around it with no players or bots and be able to pre aim down halls and various corners and spawn points. Make it a game, run around think of a spot that your near be hovering over it when you turn the corner(ideally with the right type of weapon eg. close counters you should shoot at it with a rocket). You should know the map inside and out and when in control against a real player don't be afraid to prefire a rocket where they might be if you won't be exposed for to long. This really works well against me a campy slow player when out of control as I usually don't peek corners willynilly(IMO - that's the benifit of control, you can give up information about yourself to learn, influence or slow your opponent).

- Duel maps typically have specific starting spawns(usually boiling down to one side of map gets ra other side gets mega, certain spawns on maps can be variable though eg. hektik will depend what the opponent is also doing. So know these well or just play the map a lot and know what items you can get from what spawn, the opener can very well decide the game (this less so against equal players). Typically one person gets mega the other gets RA and not necessarily a rule of thumb but having a weapon(usually the big 3 - rl, lg, rail) before going for a big item is the proper way to handle it. Best learnt with a friend, but if your a loner like me can host a listen server and play a bot and abort/spec once you know both spawns(bot_pause or just rush to where you think it is).

- Again spectate good players but now watch for spots they like to camp or move to (in and out of control). eg. on ztn it's typical for a player in control 200/200 to wait at gl platform and listen and attack(usually lg I guess) when they hear a noise. Limit yourself to 1-5 of these per try and then try these on your own. Learn how to handle various ways the position unfolds eventually sound/visual cues will make you instictly react to things. In addition you should notice how players also react to certain events. eg. I remember on ztn this guy sillario? or something would always rocket jump from mega if he heard/saw me at rl so I eventually learned to either spam gl with a rocket and run or be ready to lg if I could get there fast.

- Know how to get a feel for mega and armour spawns, can time to the second later if your up for it ;) ztn and dm6 are good starters as you can almost keep 100% rotation on them. Ztn in particular there's a rotation for 99% rotation. I don't remember the pattern but after a bunch of cycles eventually mega would spawn a second early. ++Can skip this++ My guess it was ra, mega, rl-ya, tele, pg-ya, ra, free time, rl-ya, tele, free time, pg-ya, mega, ra, free time, rl-ya, tele, pg-ya, ra, mega, repeat? shrugs, I don't feel like downloading that standalone ql to test it, all I remember was sometimes I would get get shards and lg to waste time for both yellows so it would spawn as I strafe jumped on it.

- If your up for it learn to time to the second for mega and armours.
It's definetly a struggle at first, for me for w.e reason knowing that timing is technically math in base 60 it just clicked for me with me after trying for a while. For time/the clock is base 60 where decimal is base 10, the base you typically do math in. Cause you'll notice higher numbers after 25 or 35 depending what your timing can screw you up as its not conventional math :) Also once I knew the add 5 to any decimal number pattern insanely well like I knew multiplication tables it became all memorization with the add 5 trick to help remind me. eg. 5=0, 6=1, etc. Also pick a convention and stick to it for keeping 2 items or more like no order or a particular order. eg. I like the idea of it being armour, mega and then with the chance of having a 3rd item being armour as I found that 3 items can be confusing especially when item times swap. All in all at least keep one item, I found I usually reverted to 1 item + feel as long as I moved around. If you play to campy or the particular player is controlling items really tight then having 2 items will really help for moving around safely. eg. on ztn I like getting out of pg-ya when they go for mega or RA. This part you'll probably hate as timing is hard and the game is a lot funner when not timing. For w.e reason though in duel I found it funner to stay out of trouble/get out of trouble opposed to jumping into trouble so this helped motivate me to keep times and play slow. When I tried ffa after teaching myself duel I love getting in trouble maybe that's why I never liked CA as its a weird combination of the two in addition with a different emphasis on information/cues and lack of information/motive's like items. /ramble :>


Note: This is assuming the clock is counting up, if it counting down you would need to minus but its essentially the same with overtime being weird though. Also not really a guide just an anecdote for timing :)

Also playing players at all levels will help you learn things, and if they're rude/mean ignore them :)

training on dm17 for duel is just off. You won't really have any of those combat situations in any other duel map.

training with god mode let's you develop bad habits as you don't get a feeling how fast you can die, even against bots.

Stick to warmup mode (all weapons at spawn) to practice just shooting stuff, or play CA against bots in a 1v3 or 1v4 if you want to play with bots.

But do it on the duel maps, no point to waste it in space.

he didn't say to train duel in dm17, but aim and especially rail and it's something many ppl do and it helps.

yeah its just for aim. Assuming your not zooming, the changes in movement is very quick at long distance. So I found all the little tiny twitches and adjustments needed really helped push my lg aim. Coming from CS my aim was pretty good day 1 playing ql, but lg was an issue.

Steal their eloes

Host your own server and devmap bloodrun, make it clear in the server title that it is a low ELO server. When the high elo assholes join, duel them, and let them get a lead, then turn on god mode and give yourself all the guns and rape them back. They will rage and never join again.

If you do that they will probably make a thread about it on ESR

For best results, wait until the final minute of the duel to enable God mode and try to get a comeback. This will shock and enrage them.
