If you want a prem/pro subscription you still have to pay for it, yes. Unless they decided to change the whole business model without telling anyone. I don't see that happening on the same update.

From the screenshot Syncerror posted, it looks like it's simply an embedded browser, probably some C/C++ library that isn't portable hence no Linux/MacOSX support.

I can't imagine that it isn't portable or there isn't any substitute. It looks like they just don't have resources/money/time to spend for developing it.

But it is already developed. The QuakeLive binary itself is not a browser plugin - it's, well, a binary.
And since the game itself is ported to Linux/Mac I suppose the only reason they're cutting support is either:

1) They can't be arsed to compile/test/support different binaries on different OS's
2) The library they're now using for the embedded browser isn't cross-platform

It is, but as you're saying library for embedded browser can be monoplatform so if they would want to use some substitute library for linux they would have to redevelop whole launcher in it. Wouldn't they? This would be a "waste" of time and resources that they maybe don't have.

The biggest waste here is dropping multi-platform functionality. id games were designed by John Carmack that way (OpenGL engine) for a reason, that was one of the advantages over other shooters.

.NET has nothing to do with the embedded browser and the library used is portable (as of recently). 0/10.

(Which also mean we might see Mac/Linux versions again in the future.)

According to id'sofficial anouncement, that apparently few people read ofc, one of the first performance enhacements will be quicker server connection due to the game already running.

I hardly see anyone complaining about that right now so....

I'm running the standalone right now and for me it's so much smoother than before. It's as smooth as q3 was for me (HUGE improvement for me personally.) Anyone else? My FPS are the same, it just seems more responsive and less screen tearing while moving.

I have been a beta tester for the new standalone and it actually runs great in wine on linux.

I was really skeptic about it at first, but it works okey and I am not that sad anymore :-D
It has some small issues, but nothing impossible to get working.

Do I need to install dotnet or smth in wine? Launcher just doesn't do anything here.

The focus launcher had a .NET window icon so yes, probably. Not sure which version you need.

I have had some problems sometimes when i use the remember my log in.. try to manually log in instead. Could be that.

It should be working with just a simple wine 1.7 installation. I have even tried it in 1.6 and it worked fine.

If you read most of the comments, you could think the standalone is really bugged etc, but that's just normal behaviour of people in the inet.. satisfied people don't tend to voice their opinion in that frequency like people do, who suffer from some bugs..

To break this cycle I have to say, quake with 250fps feels soo fucking smooth and I don't have any issues with the standalone. Probably because I didnt use any scripts except irc client in prism before. So atleast one satisfied casual player here.

Well done syncerror, looking forward to any upcoming improvements nevertheless..*hint* give us casuals hats(classic weaponskins etc) and we will flood you with money for useless stuff. And some kind of distribution on steam etc would probably help aswell.. :]

Now that we're on standalone someone PLEASE do a 100% overhaul on the qlive "home page" where you browse matches. It looks so poorly organized it could pass for a popup spam ad.

It needs to look professional. Look at the artwork and flow of any steam page, for any game. Further, it needs to be darker.

This seems trivial, but idiot newb players (i.e. new playerbase) people actually care and attracted by such characteristics as a 'sexy' home/menu page.
