Personally I would just plug and play. A friend of mine uses the g400s with the software and has had his dpi randomly change when opening and closing programs. I was using a g100s it is a good mouse. It is easy enough to calculate what your sensitivity would be changing to 1000dpi which is the lowest dpi setting without drivers. If my dpi is 400 and my sensitivity is 3. All I do is multiply 400 by 3 and then divide 1200 by 1000 which is 1.2 .

I don't noticed any negative effects like lag with my g100s and the software.

Only one problem is sometimes the software fails to load at start-up, so the dpi setting is at default than what i set it to, 500dpi.

I haven't noticed any difference when using SetPoint or not these days.
