In the arcades in the 80's/90's you only used to have 3 initials so that was the day before most people used aliases, so it was mostly the initials of your name, or the first 3 letters of your first name.

When online gaming got big (and I was late to it) character limit were much longer and not really your real name, and now JAM meant the stuff you ate, so I added "erio" after it as that was the surname of the local arcade owner was called valerio, and I kinda did it as I got a job with games due to the arcade games at his arcade and at the time could not think of anything else, and it just stuck.

I never felt comfy using an alias, I always felt it was nerdy to do but not using one just looked lame, that's why I think both aspects of my "alias" are not really made up, they are something I felt forced to pick hence the link to the real world.

in the '90 when we had the first doping scandals in cycling there was a funny song about epo from some comedians. I'm not sure how I came to use it as an alias, but i thinks that's where the idea originated in my head. I use another one today though, but that's a joke nick, supposed not to be taken serious. I stole that one though. I really should use my real alias as on this site for gaming.

My brother got his steam account stolen and I recovered it for myself. This was the name it had when I got it back and I was too lazy to change it.

Had lots of alias's some games back in the day pretty much expected you to make multiple character names. For fps games I just wanted a random name other than dale, so I hit the keyboard and JK came out, then after 2/3 years? realized it was fairly common especially with asians and a lot of people thought it meant "Just kidding" or that it was trolly. So I wanted a more uncommon name that represented computers, canada and my personality to some extent so it originally was actually C02Zen. That lasted a about day(got a screenshot in cs1.6 somewhere of it) but it didn't feel/look right, so I then resorted to one of my backups "ChillOut". I like the subtle in/out (on/off) Chillin/Chillout joke. Ironically ChillOut is also fairly common, as its taken on all other sites I try to register it on; and also people might think it is trolly as well lol. So I didn't really solve the original problem's, o well

I've been registered as turbo, wallflower, and wiggles at various sites. No matter what persona I put on, people get pissed.

I think its a result of losing the feeling of job/studies importance. Our world gets more and more liberal. I've recently had a talk with one of my uni mates about exam dress code. Few years ago it was just impossible to not wear a suit when taking exam, while nowadays people get in with shirt and jeans and think they are dressed well enough.

I don't know how they do it in your country, but here each student is given a number so the evaluators don't know who they are evaluating (no bias), alas, they don't know who you are. Besides, no, the person who evaluated my last exams probably don't know who I am. I have a few lecturers who is adressing something to over 300 students and you claim you can only succeed if you know the guy?

Your performance isn't based on your appearance and if anyone is taking your appearance into account, they're being unjust and biased. Considering my evaluator doesn't even know what I wore to the exam, it doesn't even make any sense to suit up anyway.

Job interviews are a different thing. For one, a teacher is not looking to hire you. Two, it depends on the job: for many jobs you have to dress up everyday (and not just for the interview). In university, you don't. See, I certainly wouldn't go in a suit for a McDonald's job interview.

Get this into your head. In the video games industry, a generalist isn't someone who knows stuff and sucks at everything. It's someone who can perform on a professional level in many fields. Who the hell would hire someone who can't do shit? Your Jack of All trades, master of none is fairly outdated and innacurate. It just shows how ignorant your are on the subject.

The time it takes to master something new is approximately 3 years. While a specialist practice one field for 10 years, the polymath masters 3 and learns a 4th one. Big game studios want specialist, because they want to pay you less. They are looking for good little soldiers, in other words... insects.

Once someone mastered one field, it's always easier to master another as he starts to perceive the same mechanics behind life that are found behind everything. The more one progresses, the more all things start to look alike. To specialize is just the first step, the second one is to become a polymath.

Specialists are terrible at solving problems. Polymaths are experts at solving problems. Game development is all about problem solving.

If you just look at 3D artists, the best ones are highly technical, they have a vast knowledge and too the time to both learn and master different softwares such as Substance Designer, CrazyBump, xNormals, 3Dcoat, Substance Painter, Shaders creation (coding or node-based editor), etc. Those polymaths have the edge because they have more tools in their arsenal to solve problems and reach their goals faster and more efficiently.

Same thing for UFC champions such as Anderson Silva or GSP, they are both excellent fighters in standup, but they also perform just as well on the ground or any other situations. They are polymaths.

To specialize is just the first baby step. Once you mastered one field, then you can become a polymath and add new skills to your belt.

Do you even understand what you are saying? Who would hire someone who isn't on a professional level in anything to do those jobs? It doesn't make any sense. I would never ever hire someone who claims to be a generalist and isn't good at anything. That's just stupid.

But the bottom line is, for personal growth, it's much wiser to choose the path of the polymath, because all the new skills you'll acquire will make you even better at what you were already good at before and you'll be able to connect dots that very few people can.

Again. That depends entirely on what you want you want to achieve and the complexity of the subject.

If you want to be a star quake player, the only way you'll get real respect is by doing it in duel, you can be the best FFA/CA/TDM/CTF player in the world, if you don't make it as a duel player, you don't get the same credit as those individuals who did no matter how superior you are across the board as a quaker, its that one mode that gets the love.

Even in duel games, if you don't do it in quake, for many people you won't get any respect from some because people who know, know quake has the highest challenge. No quake player ever watched a game of halo and got blown away, I guarantee you a Halo MLG player would watch a high end quake duel and thank god they never have to play such an opponent.

So if I go rape at halo, and cod, I'm better than someone who conquered the world of quake?

What do you mean? there are many areas in 3D that is not technical at all. Learning how to use Zbrush for example as a modeler is not the same as "Master" modeling. its the modeling itself that you need to master, the art and creativity behind it and that takes a lifetime to "Master".

I can easily learn how animate in any software in a day or two, that's not the same as mastering animation. Mastering animation also takes a lifetime and even then i wouldn't know everything there is about animation.

this is why every big studios uses people who specializes in one area, because none or at the very least very very few comes even close to the skill needed if they don't focus on becoming awesome on just one thing. And that's simply because one thing (e.g Animation) isn't just "one" thing.
So no, a specialist are not cheaper... they are the opposite of cheap, because they are the best of the best (i don't even know why i have to explain why being best=$... but i did)

You are missing many important points here.

First of all, yes, everything in life can take forever to perfect, but when it comes to compare professionals, there isn't much difference between a senior artist and a senior. In fact, the difference is almost non-existent and in many cases, juniors can be much better and efficient due to their greater technical skills. You'll see that as well in anything else like pro gamers, UFC fighters, Olympic athletes, etc.

Now about those jobs in the video games industry. In case you didn't know this, a long time ago... game designers were also programmers and vice versa. Level designers were also 3D artists and vice versa. At some point, game companies wanted to increase the work speed by splitting jobs in half and hired more people that would work in parralel. That's great when employees are polymaths, not so great if they are specialists, because they actually lack the knowledge of the other side of the coin and teamwork will never fill that hole.

In fact, games these days are poorly done, super flawed and things that were unacceptable 10 years ago like skipping a whole enemy encounter by just running through the enemies to trigger a cutscene that will make them disappear right after is now oky in Halo 4. Or in games like Call of Duty, you can just stay there and time will do the job for you.

Now, you guys may think that big video games companies are looking for super talented specialists, veterans with 5-15 years of experience, etc. The reality is, that's not what they are looking for. When you have more than 4-5 years of experience, you understand how to make games, you understand the workflow,you know how to get things done, what needs to be fixed and when overtime is actually necessary or not. Well, guess what? That's exactly the type of people that they just don't want to hire. Most big companies want to hire people with less than 4 years of experience that will do as much overtime as they are told, will obey orders and not ask questions or even make suggestions to improve their work conditions.

That's the real world.

There are good game companies out there like Naughty Dog, but those are rare.

That said, we may be used to put things into different categories as it seems easier to process stuff, but the reality is... there is no such thing as separation. It's not better to be a specialist, in fact it's the worst thing you could do. I was watching an interview the other day with Ben Affleck. He got asked if it was hard for him to be an actor and direct is movies at the same time. Guess what? He answered that tit didn't make much difference, because in the end it's just the same soup for him. And that to understand how to act makes him a greater director and the fact he directs films makes him a greater actor, etc.

Bottom line, if someone wants to make games, then he should get his black belt (1-5 years of practice per field depending of the person) in programming, then 3D modeling, then 3D animation, game/level design and finally sound design.

I don't know much about game development but since the a lot of aspects that are similar to making Animated movies i just can't see how any of this makes sens.

I would assume that buggy games is due to the fact that AAA games are very complex these days, deadlines being tighter and publishers pushing the company to release the game before it finished to make money faster and not because "its all the specialist fault" reasoning...

Like i said i don't know much about game development can only tell you how it works in my company which does 3D animated movies and the 3D industry in general.
When we hire people for bigger projects we want specialists who are awesome at what they do. Animators are what we usually hire because that is something that takes a lot of time to do (at a high level) but we also sometimes hired people to do dynamics like water or other simulations or a artist only doing hair ect.
At big projects we usually hire one generalist as well but he only does the things that are "not as important" such as background animations or background simulations and so on or "boring" stuff that we don't have time to do.

If we would only hire Generalists because they are cheaper and everyone was doing a little bit of everything, every single aspect of the movie would become worse. much much worse.

i understand that some people want to be a 1 man army doing movies(/games) on your own because you love doing moves(/games) but if you want to be apart of something bigger and better you should specialize in one area and excel in it as far as you can and join up with the best.

I just can't see how games would be so much different.

I used to play with rediculously high sensitivity. Which was due to a 'lack of desk' and a frequent 'out of mousepad error' as I would just place a mousepad on my knee or on a box/crate/chair/whatever. Even very irregular shaped things I'd just put my mousepad on there and go :p

Someone pointed out that this was "not normal" and I figured that would be appropriate so I got out a dictionairy and looked up different definitions for "not normal"/"out of the ordinairy". FFT stands in maths and physics for Fast Fourier Transform which is one of the greatest algorithms invented in maths ever. It is known for it's ridiculous speed efficiency at no trade of accuracy known to plague other algorithms like that. I have been asked a couple times in game if it stands for the fourier transform so it is that well known. I think even Memento_Mori called me out on it in this forum. Always feels good that people get your nickname.

I usually played with something like FastFourierTransformer, as a joke on the Transformers franchise or TheFastAndTheFouriers and other shit like that where I could tie in nerdy shit I enjoyed into mainstream culture.

FFT is just very easy to pronounce and it has a meaning to it and it is less offensive than the other shit I used to get to my opponents nerves.

Although one could argue about your explanation a bit..... The fourier transform is just a transformation (towards frequencies). In the transformed space one can "think about different types of algorithms" to solve certain problems. And those algorithms are usualy faster than their counterparts in the regular (non-)transformed space.

The FFT did increase the transformation to much higher speeds than the alternatives before that (which weren't really compatible with computers).
The explanation presented kinda makes it seem like you can "do things with FFT". It's somewhat more subtle.... In general you do IFFT( algorithm_in_fft_space( FFT( origional problem ) ) ). And that can be faster than algorithm_in_origional_space(origional problem) becausethe algorithm is based on other properties.

The discrete Fourier Transformation is just a transformation the Fast Fourier Transformation is a fucking fast transformation. While the FT has superficially O(N^2) the FFT has O(N Log[N]) and even (LogN LogN for quantum computers) with zero loss of accuracy, as in there are no approximations involved only smart arguments of symmetry that allow continuous reduction of the problem to half its size.

As for the argument of frequency space to real space is also a valid one. When analyzing data you can get ridiculous amounts of data to noise ratio improvements applying the FT or some differential operators on a grid are very simple in fourier space, they only involve a FT, simple shift, iFT and done. instead of some tedious and inefficient relaxation methods. Especially when dealing with periodic boundary conditions.

But I kept my explanation short and simple out of respect for people who might read it.

My point is that the "simple shift in FT space" is actually a quite complex algorithm in "normal space" (this is not entirely correct language to talk about "spaces" here....).
But just doing the FT and an iFT would just result in the same thing as you started out with.

Aka the FT enables a different way of thinking about algorithms. But the FFT algorithm is only useful because it calculated the FT 'space' fast.

This different way of thinking about the problem (aka you think in adjusting frequencies rather than (for example) pixels) leads to more efficient algorithms, which even are so efficient that it is justified to do an FFT followed the algorithm follwed by an iFFT. Sometimes it can even be justified to do another type of FT and iFT... but that doesn't "gain" anything over doing the FFT and iFFT ;)

Which is a blessing if you ever had to calculate a laplacian on a grid. Because you can just FT and multiply the whole transformed matrix by a static coefficient matrix element by element and transform it back and you have solved a poisson/laplace equation with ridiculous efficiency around 10 faster than some relaxation method would.

I know some image processing algorithms are heavily based on FT's and the little work I did was mind blowing how very simplistic filters in FT space (idk why you would say it is inappropriate to use the term 'space' in this context as it is very often used in literature and scientific jargon) would create very strong effects in real space. And ofc more advanced techniques are at the core of all the magic you can do in photoshop.

Although mostly I have worked with FT's (both continuous and discrete) are in theoretical physics, mostly in QFT, where momentum is a much more natural variable to talk than position. While there is no clear computational advantage, the change in variables can allow much greater insight.

Having gaming experience since 2002, I never really stuck with a particular one, not in quake. In the game I substantially play, since 2007 people know me as ShoCk. It was a random nick I engineered really quick when started to learn the game but then found myself to have become a world record holder just as quick. And because rules wouldn't allow me to nick change due to my records I was forced to stick with it.

Then it spread beyond the game and I realized I get annoyed at engineering stupid addings to the nick when creating new accounts on different sites and medias, like shock777, shock3r etc.. because obviously ShoCk is the most fucking used nick out there in gaming after -KilleR- and Sanya77RUS.

So I figured out that I want a nick that no one else use and that was when I was listening to Smile Empty Soul - Silhouettes, so to make sure that nick will be more rare I changed second i to e, googled and it was still used, then I decided to add 333 because 3 is my lucky number and having it repeated thrice is thrice cooller.
