whatever has players and activity and is fun to play
tired of playing dead DM games. every new arena game that pops up is dead within a year, unless a new game pulls some league of legends shit, nothing will likely have a big player base unless it's a new quake/unreal/whatever
seriously lets get some players. we'd probably have double the QL player base if the payment method wasn't ridiculously stupid. or kill it and we can go back to regular quake and do what we want the way we want, aka the way it's been since quake started.
that's why at this point I rather just the whole thing be free (unlikely) or be killed (more likely). their sub method splits the already small community, I just want a big happy community. free servers suck and paying yearly for ql sucks too (pro members have paid over $150 for 3 years of QL, that's ridiculous compared to any other game where you pay a flat rate and get it forever)
the only appeal to QL was bringing in more players. we're past that now. we should just go back.
agreed about the rotation system. free servers suck. no voting sucks. why am I so sad about this
Over the years we've seen many projects of the subgenre after quake3, most of which can be considered quake clones.
Out of those many were not finished, and most that did were very disappointing. To be honest the only good ones I can recall right now and that were finished were Enemy Territory 2003, UT2k4 (or consider 2k3 if you want) and the original Painkiller. Maybe I'm missing one or two titles like lets say Urban Terror and TF2 stretching the definition, but the point is pretty much everything in this genre has been awful after quake3. Out of 30 titles 3 are acceptable.
With that said, I have 0 hopes for anything good coming up here. I'd go as far as saying I'd be impressed if out of those three titles two are released in a more or less completed state (especially considering the very early announcements of the three), let alone being truly good compared to what's available in 'arena' 'deathmatch' fps and in fps in general..
So were my other picks. I can't recall a good "not professionally made" arena fps ever made, and by good I mean 8/10 with 10 being a masterpiece (probably no 10s in this genre).
Are any of them going to eclipse QL as a complete package? I doubt it. We are all going to continue to play QL while any of them may enjoy about the same success as warsow.
I am definitely looking forward to all of them though. And I hope that at least one by some magical way capture a large following.
having a better dm game than QL is just a matter of time, it is q3 essentially, if you say otherwise you're just looking at stuff that is only understood by quake nerds, biased, in other words.
QL is not a step forward even if some people are happy to play the game everyday, it was a project reopened (q3) by different guys and they are managing something that was already created, it was 'nothing' new or fresh. On the other side you have these new projects started from scratch.
If you want to have a proper DM scene within the next few years you should stop dickriding QL over anything else that hasn't even came out yet or you'd end up playing with the same people everyday, and I tell you this because I'm a CPM player.
I don't think anything you said contradict me. I'm sure some of these since they emulate cpm physics can perhaps draw in a new crowd + the old cpm and qw players. But for most of us it really needs to be something special, something we wished Q4 would've been years before its release. I just can't see that happening. But I will be pleasantly surprised if they prove me wrong. :)
Our game? Project Nex. We are going to experiment with it internally. Its likely it may make it into the game, but I'm not sure if it'll work in the competitive game modes.
In that order, although, sadly, I doubt one of the games will get close to QL popularity (which is of course not very popular itself).
I still think Q3/QL is a near-perfect game gameplay wise and I'm still not tired of it. I'm only getting tired of the same 2 guys in the finals everytime.
So my biggest hope is actually QL getting more popular. I wish id would communicate more with community telling what they have planned (QL 2.0) and listen to the feedback.
I think we can get Project Nex out there. We haven't mention our SP campaign that much, but it is a huge focus of our game, believe it or not. Here soon we'll have a synopsis of the story and then in Kickstarter a more detailed explanation.
Reflex = perfected cpm???
I hope so
Arqon gave up on cpm gameplay changes in 03 or 04!
Quite a bit could be done to improve it(removing instaswitch isn't one of those things :p quick switch combos forever)
Sure, but don't you think Matchmaking would go against your goal? In matchmaking, you meet random people and such syste, just cannot help build a solid community. Could be good for ranked games and meet people of similar skill levels, but in another way, if noobs can't play with the best players out there, they they'll be slower to learn the game.
One of the problems I've observed with the Halo franchise is that players don't want to waste their time. If Matchamkiing gives them Pts or exp or Ranks, they may stick to matchmaking instead of custom games. Most people keep playing just to unlock stuff, that is more important than the fun they can get form the gameplay itself.
How do you guys plan to make matchmaking and custom games both equally relevant to maintain a unified gaming community?
