It's actually pretty good for most weapons , you should give it a try ... i know strenx used this crosshair back in the day :P but i believe it works best for tankjr , keel likes crosshair 2 more :D
i play at 640x480 and i use crosshairsize 61 with crosshair 2. large crosshairs make small, sharp movements look smooth instead of jumpy IMO, which gives a better perception of smooth tracking. maybe it's just me, WDIK?
Basically r_bloomscenesaturation 0, but to be ok if you want tweak I think you have to know some other cvar I used (I possibly forget a cvar, or be wrong, or forgot one) :
seta r_enableColorCorrect "0" : (read only, you have to quit, not only vid_restart) with 1 I wasn't satisfied, something was wrong, can't remember exactly what
seta r_textureMode "gl_nearest" : gl_nearest because other possibilities blur models when they're far away and, then, bloom effect is less effective.
seta r_overBrightBits "3" : 3 because lower will affect visibility due to the bloom effect and plasma and rocket explosion are too much overbright seta r_mapOverBrightBits "2" : balance with overbright 3 To lower contrast
bloom stuff :
seta r_enableBloom "1"
seta r_bloomactive "1"
seta r_bloomSceneSaturation "0" : set to 0 for the grey map. U can choose 2, 3... or more if u want something really contrasted in color, or 0.* to have a greyish like to still have some color for CTF and rail color...
note : model colors don't react the same way, u have to balance depanding them. For exemple green (0x00ff00ff) is very shiny and yellow less (0xffff00ff) :
seta r_bloomBrightThreshold "0.5" : usefull to balance the bloom effect, "1" disabled it (usefull with bloomscenesaturation >1). seta r_bloomSceneIntensity "1.5" : usefull to balance the bloom effect and remplace r_gamma (it won't work) for the map luminosity seta r_bloomIntensity "0.5" : balance the general effect seta r_bloomSaturation "10" : same
back when bloom was introduced to QL i played around with those too.. decreasing the saturation and using a green glow model for high contrast (without having ultra dark maps).
thing is - while this may look awesome at screenshots, i found it bad to play with. for 2 reasons mainly
a) bloom adds lag. atleast for me it does. even when the fps were still at 125 it always felt like using a 125mhz usb mouse again - same happens to me when i use higher values of antialiasing or anisotropic filtering by the way. its not like you would feel it instantly, but switching it on and off makes you feel the difference.
b) the way the glow is handled is actually quite problematic. the closer the enemy is, the stronger the glow will be. infact if the enemy is at long range it can happen that it doesnt pass the "glowmass" threshold anymore and is just as desaturated as the whole map.. which is BAD. plus its kinda annoying that you cannot use something like "only make green stuff glow" .. because explosions and items will become massive lightballs aswell D:
Your b) issues are all fixable, you have to find the great balance. At least I don't have them.
I'll test for the lag, i didn't noticed it yet but I didn't play since years so my feeling is anyway still loosy.
i just tested your settings and they are actually worse in these terms than the ones i tested 3 years ago :/
the "best so far" bloom settings ive tested were from havz0r at this thread: http://www.esreality.com/index.php?a=post&id=1950022 (comment #236) his settings somewhat made the "explosions/items problem" bearable, but he wasnt able to compensate for the "bloom is too stronk close up, and almost disappears at long range" aswell. thats what he said himself and i have to agree :(
fact is - the bloom settings only allow you to choose what problem bothers you the least. plus there are some ingame ads / logos / effects that will start to bloom too and theres no working around that (as he stated too)

Have you start with r_enableColorCorrect "0" and full screen ? I got absolutely none effect you're talking about, but I got them windowed, his cvar or mine.
I've gotten some nice ideas from others so here's mine atm. The standard QL crosshairs have too thick lines for my taste so I made one with thin lines, the crosshair looks blurry unless you fullscreen it.
