But the simplicity and elegance of how he manages to create engines is amazing. And his talks on this area are imho are easy to follow and fun.
Ok they can be somewhat monotone and he can jump from going into specific details to the larger picture quite often which can make it hard to follow ;)

Everyone should boycott everything Bethesda and id related (post acquisition at least). JC should have earned the respect of PC gamers for pushing the medium forward tremendously and ought to be given support. rage was a fun game but id software is no longer the innovator, there are plenty of much better looking games, megatextures failed as a gfx technology, john is a talented person, his talents will be much better used in a smaller team with higher impact. quake 3 engine is the only hope for a good shooter, the rest is useless (as far as fps innovation goes and not just making a good game). id was a standout company in the 90s but after doom3 it lost leadership in being at the front of innovation in games.

i think johns hardware oriented approach to innovation in graphics dragged latter games like rage. inability to compromise and make dirty hacks to make game look better on weak hw is what failed id games to be relevant on consoles. id engines were pure pc hardware sellers, people had to buy hardware to enjoy their games, in consoles its only software that matters and you cant sell a console even at the start of the cycle by a standout product since all console hw is outdated when it arrives, so it wont work without dirty hacks that please cheap hw (opposite to ids philosophy of pushing new hardware with each game)

to me its the other way around. rage was excellent looking (let alone the texture reload crap) but failed as a game. while the combat and general gameplay felt good you could really tell id is missing the headdesigner mindwork of what formerly was done by Hall and Romero. The whole world just wasnt immersive at all. The start of the game was good (waking up in that cryocapsule, the others malfunktioning and stepping out into the wasteland) but after that there was nothing. do you remember a single character? they were all static, flat and uninspiring. there was no story told or social interaction possible. the player couldnt relate to anyone: neither was there a bad guy that you learned to hate or a good fellow that made you sad when he was killed or a little romance with a smart and strong female wastelander.. the game was just extremly dull and straight arcade style "please go there, kill stuff and come back" in various forms filled with minigames like remote bomb cars and race driving that filled no deeper purpose.
there are games that succeed even without those social things but they make up with deep atmosphere and an immersive world (freedom to move, things to explore, great soundtrack). rage didnt have anything but the basics (graphics, gameplay) and totally lacked soul and thus long-term-motivation. i tried playing it like 3 times, each time i was really motivated for the first hour or so and then lost interest.

yes but it wasnt a groundbreaking graphics game like crysis. even though it came ou in 2007 rage looks only marginally better if at all. textures are very blurry and megatextures looks like a waste of time, it never even came to my mind that the world is uniquely textured, it looks exactly the same as tiled texture techniques. in doom 3 you could see that its lightyears ahead in terms of graphics from all the other games. even though reviews werent very good i think doom3 is a much better innovator in its time then rage, rage looks like killzone or any other good game, but there nothing cool or unique about it, just a very good game. i bought it because i liked all the other id software games, i think they should rerelease all their older games in retail with some remastering, that would be unique and different from modern games. rage really was mediocre, it really was like killzone on ps3, there is nothing about it that was fun to the point like it was when doom3 came out. maybe i am old, but statistically doom3 is like 90 percent and rage is maybe 75 in terms of when it was released and all the other games that came out at that time. i respect it because i am fan of the company but the game was really mediocre. i know they tried their best and stuff, but it still failed. it would have been ok game for some average console developer, but not for a compny that invented the genre, rage is a copy of all the other games that came out before it, its a good game for a so so studio but not for id, we waited for it since 2004 it was a failure.

I think you're a bit quick to judge a technology by the use of it in a game.

Where doom3's gameplay fairly heavily depended upon the lighting technology, rage's gameplay is not dependend upon the megatexturing.
That's possibly why in rage you don't "notice the difference" compared to regular tiled textures.

This however doesn't mean that the technology failed... The technology is build such that the artists can create whatever they would want to create. And I think (not entirely sure) that it managed to do so.

What I do think is a "bad call" is to try and make a console game out of it (because you have limited space for content on a disk). Also the choice for a shooter kind of game might not be that great.

I think that especially for online RPG's megatexturing would be awesome.

If you don't mind a 1 TB game.

While I agree that the concept of megatextures is very neat, I think it's pretty obvious at this point that most people today don't give a crap about or even notice repeating textures, which makes the technology pretty much only useful for game devs.

I guess we can kinda agree on that atm :)

But like I said... theres a difference between the tech and other things...
Think about who wants what and for what reason... Especially when looking at the future :)

The game is good but not great. The start was a disaster with game unplayable for many PC users including me. God, how many times I've seen the start of the game and then game crashed soon after, or I would walk out and see that textures take 10 seconds to load.

The plot was really weak, the ending is disappointing.

c'mon man I actually enjoy watching the stage entertainment part of it. It's like a weird 5 hour monty python sketch with an emphasis on awkwardness. I let it take my hand and carry me on to a wonderful realm populated by ping pong balls, bananas tied to bits of string, marriage proposals and lots and lots of coke.

Still, it's difficult to weight the sheer awkwardness of the sideshow to the disappointment in it being a blasphemy against The Quake. I lean more towards the "fuck off and die" end of the spectrum but I won't deny I did enjoy seeing Evil about to strangle Todd with a keyboard cord. And the ballsucking... thing... competition... what the fuck was that.
