Why should we run a segregated tournament?

To encourage more g4mer gurls to play Quake, maybe?

Chess is also "segregated" by genre and I think it's a good idea. There are mixed tournaments everywhere around the world, of course, but if you care to take a look, there's only two girls in the top 100 chess players, with an ELO rating almost 200 points below the very #1. It's nice that women can compete each other and actually win something sometimes instead of being roflstomped by the great grandmasters. It's not a sexist idea - unless you're a faggot doing "women studies" in some left-ass university -, it's a good one.

Yes it's exactly what inspired me, this tournament. But I think the level of female players has risen drastically ever since.

Just like rauvz said, it's not a great idea to hold a segregated tournament. Let them compete with the guys. Saying things like "but they don't win" is a stupid excuse and a defeatist attitude.

There is no reason why women need a special tournament instead of competing against men.

We do - e.g. for entry and selection tests in central Europe.

I don't really consider quake to be a game where physical prowess plays too much of role ( though I do think your health does) as long as a person can get their mind in to timing and position then build enough aim to take routine shots then you can get fairly far.

One thing though that I've noticed is at least with the women around me is that the women tend to get more drastically preoccupied/worried so maybe that's why they haven't improved at the same degree aside from maybe the lack of motivation.

Because most sports are physical where women have a disadvantage. If you compare female football(soccer) to male where is a world of difference. The pace is lower the shots are weaker, pretty much everything is worse.

There are no reason to have segregated tournaments where nobody have a disadvantage over the other. You could even be handicapped and play chess/quake/CS etc.

The only reason to have a segregated tournament for women is if you think that they are in some way incapable of defeating men in quake.

chess, archery, shooting sports have segregated tournaments.
I don't know if there are any separate women leagues or events in motor sport, but I for one can't really see many women competing successfully with men there.

Of course there will always be exceptions (e.g. Judit Polgar, Scarlett) but across the board (no pun intended) it seems that even the sports that require little to no physical strength or endurance will be most likely be dominated by men. Maybe it is just a testosterone thing? Is this idea so outrageous that it must not be true, regardless of all indications?

Could it be possible that women might be less inclined to compete in these sports and therefore the pool of potential female champions is way smaller? Who knows?

Maybe a combination? Whatever the reasons, the results are pretty clear.

I've read about a sociobiological insight that women, with respect to numerous features, are to a bigger extent centered around the mean and men being sort of a crapshoot. That would provide some explanation for why there are more men rising to the top in various prestigious categories but also outnumbering women in places like mental institutions or prisons.

Here, if I remember correctly, this was applied to a few interesting social phenomena.

i would not be outraged if such a tournament would happen, but i dont think it really needs to be in quake as much as it is in something like boxing or the annual arm wrestling/jar opening championships. these things mean well but it is tiring sometimes to see it everywhere.. i used to dj some years ago andsaw it all the time in there too and to be given a gig forr having tits and basically being sold for eye candy instead of track selection or skill is a bit insulting.

I think a "X only" tournament in a discipline where being male/female/whatever isn't an advantage is acceptable if the goal is to know who is the best within X.

Guys some funny comments OK, but basically I think you are not right, when you say, there are no differences. Look at chess, that is a good example. You have also women only tournaments. In top 100 people, there is only one woman in there I think.

I'm fine with lower levels. Just not seeing all games being 20-0's because 5% of the female Quaker population is more committed to the game than the other 95% who spend all their time trying to match their nailpolish with their outfit, than to invest time into getting the best in Quake.
And I don't blame them, since Quake is a game for fat elitist-nerds and these gamergirls aren't trying to impress you- but people who are cool IRL.

So unless you guys are as cool as a DDK or a Purri, why bother with a cup like this. You aren't gonna get any anyways.

This isn't a physical sport. Gender is meaningless in quake skill. Why the hell would you bother to make a distinction and make a female-only tourney? Hell, we can hardly get a tourney, period. Stop digging for special treatment or some gimmicky way to see who is a female in the game.

Sounds like an original and positive idea, if it's executed correctly and would be a refreshing tournament idea, albeit could attract minor negative attention since some people watching could be stupid (running into stupid people is a risk in life and on the internet no matter what gender you are though :D).

Quakecon in 2005 had a Ms. Quakecon tournament (dominated by girlz Of Destruction iirc... 5 placements in the top 10), ESWC has a specialist event for Female CS teams, and there were closed Quake cups based on country of residence, both on ESL and privately organised ones (i remember GB, IE and those filthy Poles all organising successful ones in either QL or CPM.

It's an interesting idea but probably not a very realistic one though from an organisational point of view. + Round hurr it's a lot more interesting to watch an evil vs cypher final for the seven hundred and ninety first time as well))
