Yeah. I struggle to keep focus, got a lot of questions if I swapped players as I suddenly played better or worse some time into the match. Quake 3 the kind of game where I'm on the limit to being in flow or not. In Tetris I stay in flow much better, in games like TF2 and PlanetSide 2, I'm out of flow :P

last year i played with a guy in CTF that i thought were completely new because i had to explain things like that his teammates were in one color and enemies one other so that he would stop purposely shot teammates and such basic things. I looked at his profile and he had a total playing time of more then a month.

I met a guy not long ago, who said he plays for 12 years and thought he's pretty good.
He couldn't even strafe properly, positioned himself very poorly and wondered why am I hitting 65+ % lg and 85+ % rail on him while he walks in prolly straight lines ffs. Ofc I was the 'thats impossible, cheater faggot, sure sure' guy for a few consecutive games.

When I was in the same situation the gametypes were ffa, ca and ctf. It's pretty much around the same skill difference between tier 3 and 4 there.

After some time I managed to be somewhat decent in tier 4, but usually in team modes I'm still near the bottom. What helped me prolly was a longer (like a month or sth) break from ql. Plus I almost stopped caring and raging.

I sympathise with this. I've been in a rut with dueling for months now. I know what I'm doing wrong, and lots of people tell me what I'm doing wrong, but I just can't seem to break it. I'm a bit better lately, but I don't have the time and motivation to get better that I did a year ago. At this point I've all but given up on the idea of ever being anything but bad at duel.

Play with people you enjoy playing with. Play team modes, if that's your thing. Play lolCA with people you know. Take a break if you need to.

my point is that maybe you really don't know what it is you're doing wrong. if you aren't a high level player, how could you be sure? you don't know enough to know what you don't know. I'm a high level player and a lot of my friends who ask me for advice are always so sure they need to do X and Y, and refuse to listen when I tell them they're missing the point. I'm not saying that's you--maybe you really do know what you're doing wrong, but how would you know?

I know because it's painfully obvious, but also everyone half decent at duel can see and has told me.

Basically I just get into the same rut every duel, where I'm out of control and playing way too passively. Sometimes it takes me a few minutes to notice that I'm not really doing anything except camping positions that it's easy to run away while dealing damage from. I have no idea how or why it happens. It's especially bad on ZTN.

I have literally known about this for 6 months and I just can't get over it. I figure once I do I'll make a pretty big jump in skill, but it's a really big hurdle for the time being.

That said, it's not like it's the only thing I need to improve at. It's just the biggest and hardest to fix for me, for whatever reason.

All I seem to see are sub 2000elo everywhere, except a couple of CA servers and #ffapikup.

With QL's system of getting 3 points if you are in the 1/3 of the scoreboard, any retard can get there in team modes.

This will happen to you on anything, such is life. The idea of playing quake isnt becoming cypher or evil (would be awesome i know), but enjoying the game and try to keep improving.

for me, i noticed the
tier3 overall accuracies fall in the low to mid 20% range
tier4 avg overall accuracies fall in the high 20s to mid 30% range
tier4 pros (aka what should be "tier5") overall accuracies fall in the high 30s to mid 40% range
maybe the last two comparisons is how we can divide the tier4 class and prevent the "quake live hell"?

ofc just like any other metric this is not accurate in all cases/can easily be skewed due to slumming or those playstyles that require lots of spamming but generally it seems to be a more common theme than going by K/D or damage or even win/loss ratios like how ELO is determined for CA

I'm going to channel weird here and say the uncomfortable truth. The netcode in QL is a little crazy. Things would improve if they retired the antilag because there are certain advantages at high ping that should not exist in a balanced game. If you are fortunate enough to have a low ping then you should receive all the advantages of a low ping. If you are unfortunate enough to have a high ping then you should receive all the disadvantages of a high ping. High pings being advantageous doesn't really make sense to me. I'm not claiming that this makes or breaks a player but it is something you can benefit from when you understand. Very few (if any) other games have such a peculiar netcode. Anyone who has moved around or simply changed ISPs can attest to this. I would like to believe that most gamers love consistency and honestly the difference between 20 ping and 60 ping is pants on head retarded.

the giant problem in QL netcode has never been realy the antilag countermeasures idea in itself. The giant problem is the players having constant micro lags / warp that can still hit you while you dont see their positions. I know on the last quakelive cheat website they are selling this. The y say it can possibly work for other games too.

The game is badly coded and not optimised. The physic movement AND colision part of the engine is not separated to the FPS, in fact everything is built around it, even sounds / netcode etc.

Shit is just poorly designed. But trust me their is worse. Look at Killing Flor for exemple. You up the netspeed command = you can unlock fps to 170, the fuck?

As a player who has to play with high ping quite often, I'm actually glad some of these implementations exist because otherwise the game (for me) would be pretty much unplayable. There's already enough gay shit the player with low ping can get away with (IE: rushing lg and higher ping opponent misses a few rockets -- and im talking like 20-30 ping vs 75, which is my case AND, having a easier lg vs lg fight, having a MUCH easier time shooting rockets, etc), I wouldn't want them getting away with anything more. So the fact that the netcode allows me to have decent aim at a higher ping is fine by me. but that's just my skewed view of it, people say I shoot rails around walls and stuff tho with higher ping, which is quite likely in a high vs low ping game.

If you are fortunate enough to have a low ping then you should receive all the advantages of a low ping. If you are unfortunate enough to have a high ping then you should receive all the disadvantages of a high ping. High pings being advantageous doesn't really make sense to me.

You have a very weird idea of an even playing field (which we should strife for I think). There should be no advantages or disadvantages to certain connections or pings AT ALL (unless you're getting into the extremes, i.e. anything above 80ms).

Evil on 5 ping vs Cypher on 30? -> Introduce a server lag (or whatever is best) that simulates 30 ping to Evil. Only way to make the game even.

You're fantasizing. It is much easier to just get rid of the antilag code. Players already get to decide which servers they want to compete on so it's really up to them. 5 and 30 ping are low anyway. In a good netcode it is pretty even. The issue is that in QL, if the pings were 5 vs. 60, the player with higher latency has certain advantages over the lower latency player. Why does this exist? It makes sense to have worse performance the higher your latency is. It should never enhance your performance. The antilag is bizarre and it should be erased.

The best player should win, regardless of ping. Without antilag the best connection wins.

Also games without lag compensation are practically unplayable online. People are spoiled :P

You're clearly a LPB. Why is it okay for one group of people to get fucked for their connection and not for the other, when neither of them can have a truly significant influence on it anyway?

Going for the lowest common denominator won't make the game fair, it will make it dull.

Let's apply your thinking to other variables:

* Player A can't get 125 fps? Force player B to have the same.
* Player A is playing on a 60 Hz screen? Switch to 60 Hz mode for player B too, screw his 144 Hz monitor.
* Player A is using a 5€ USB mouse? Switch to standard USB driver for player B too, screw 1000 Hz 'n stuff.
* Player A is using a keyboard with 2KRO and key ghosting? Simulate the same for player B, screw his NKRO keyboard.

It is not the fault of the game if a player has bad equipment/connection. The game should make full use of hardware that is available; if the hardware is better, then it is natural for the game to perform better.

The costs of getting all these things you mention are relatively reasonable for a hobby, which gaming is. The only thing being even close to actually have a prize is the 144Hz monitor (but not if you consider CRTs passable alternatives), and maybe the mouse+kb if you're really greedy and want top-end stuff. Assuming you already have a pc, 400$ will get you all equipment you need to level the playing field hardware-wise. Add a low-tier graphics card if your pc can't put out 125fps or reduce your config. I think these things are reasonable to ask of people when they complain about the game being unfair.

But if someone wants to improve his connection, they have to change their location. Most people would literally have to move countries (or at least regions) for great ping. You can hardly expect that.

quake hell doesn't last that long; i have been in your position, where you hit the wall of learning and you start the long journey of experience, but after a year or so you'll be firmly T4 and T3 will be boring to you.

Tier 4 itself is a broad spectrum. Normal T4 is generally considered a proficient Quaker/veteran of the Quake series. Higher T4 means people who play semi-proffesionally and the ones who are much more skilled than the average Quaker. And the top T4 if we can call it that are people who should be in Tier 30.

You talk about skill. Take note that even in 1996 there were guys who got into Q and instantly owned most players. It's a genetics/mind thing. Some people find out to be naturally extremely gifted in FPS and all these eyars only made them meaner. You won't beat that. Let the elites cater to themselves.
On the other side of the spectrum are people who never progressed beyond a certain point - be it tier 2 or 3. They simply can't get higher because they already hit their limit. They're not "worse" for that, someone might not be skilled in FPS and that's completely normal.

You are mistaken if you think that if you ascend to T4 your problems will be solved. There's ALWAYS someone who can rape you out there, you will OFTEN find yourself in matches with people that go thru you like knife thru butter. And you will be even more pissed. T4 is where the "real", normal Quake is at. Efficient use of the game elements and experience. So you will live in another circle: Beating easily low T4 and getting raped by top T4.

What you describe is a normal way in Quake. There's always someone worse than you and someone better than you out there.

my best friend is in the exact same spot as you, but he stays positive about it.
When he gets down to tier3 he gets some easy wins against noobs and enjoys it, and when he's in tier4 he does his best and learn tricks from better players. he doesn't care if he's last in scores in tier4 as long as he's having fun.

see the positive side to things and you won't get frustrated, this can only help you improve.

First and biggest mistake you make is thinking genetics matter much for becoming top in QL, that's far from true especially when it comes to pure combat, as long as you don't have parkinsons or some kind of severe problems you'd be surprised with how much you can improve. The problem is many players are afraid to play in a way that challenges themselves and forces them to get better and this is the biggest reason why so few people are even decent at this game combat wise. Don't worry so much about winning/stats, worry more about challenging yourself and you'll be surprised how much you can improve.

Best (only?) way is to quit playing random games and start playing irc tdm/ctf pickups or duels against people also trying to improve. Join a clan and play in leagues too.

I've been playing Quake since 'Quake', was most active throughout Quake 3 and today I play probably a few hours a week of Quake live (mainly CA and the odd duel) but I still feel like I'm improving. Slowly but surely. I have bad patches but generally my accuracy is creeping up and my confidence and my calmness. I think improving at Quake is very simple when not at the top level - be calm and careless and make a decision for the best. Similar with aim - be calm and careless and keep your eye on the ball.

I am inconsistent as fuck, some days I played like a 2400 elo player and some days I play like a 900 elo player.

I feel like I am finally getting out of the stage(quake hell) and I'm able to play with competent players in duel. It took close to two years granted I didn't really start dueling consistently till a year ago. But now I'm having the extreme challenge of dumb ass lag spikes. So while I still don't have much problems with this with 1200elo guys. When I play 1500+ elo guys I start off doing ok until we have to battle, but then my game lags the fuck out and I just die not even knowing what happened.

It's just never ending... maybe it's time to try a new game :/

I continue to go with my idea that this is happening for a perfectly simple reason: noobs get dropped into t3.

When you feast on a couple of beginners in t3 your level gets higher than t3 but lower than t4. Happened all the time in good old poker when people started in NL50/100 for psychological reasons ("penny games? nah!" "$200+ the loss? nah!") and decent winners there got demolished when trying their luck in NL500.

If noobs started in t1, you would have a stronger t3, would be ranked as middle t3 and would perform as such in the games. You wouldn't be going back and forth from one tier to the other.

My only advice is... stick to it the old way (you know, when vets say "I did it myself!") and try to find new exercises to practice your movements and aim (yes exercises! omg!). You're not a top t3 player at the moment!

The time you'll spend in Quake Live hell is dependent on the ingeniosity you'll find into imagining new ways for improvement. This is excl. cfg changes which don't help to improve (quite the opposite if you think about it) but just refresh your motivation.

Now the obvious: EVERYONE GOES THROUGH THIS! I DID IT MYSELF!

Some of the new players are worse than others, so there must be a place lower than the starting point. The average newbie is better than the really bad newbie. For example QLRanks starts with 1200 elo, but some people are lower than that so for having a skill matched game they have to play against people worse than the average newbie. Maybe start from tier 2?

But more than that, what noobs complain about is that they are stuck between tier 3 and tier4, with tier 4 being the highest in anything public games except duel. What I'd do is isolating tier 4 itself some more, knowing that the best solution would be a tier5, with the best tier4 players, but there's not enough playerbase for that, with maybe the exception of lolca.

Agree also. But as you said, again the devs claim there's not enough players for that.

What you would do is basically storm the terrible T1 players with players much better than them continuously. Even if those end up tiering up fast, the fact that new players keep flowing in would have that result. Similarly, tier slummers would then be able to stay out of T4 longer since they would have to go up from T1 instead of T3.

In any case, assuming the new player is terrible rather than average sounds ugly. Math-wise, it wouldn't matter much with QL's terrible skillrating (except for duel) but it would be problematic with some others.

I grunched and took it for granted it was a CA thread so I'll go on with CA experience. Duel is very different, ffa/CTF are not as bad because of less vets and pub TDM is long dead.

From my experience bouncing, teaching, spec'ing:
t1 player: can't aim a weap, walks forward or backward till seeing keel and shoots randomly
t2 player: cautious enough to not overcommit to fight, shoots roughly on the keels
t3 player: lacks a bit of coordination, speed and mindgame to actually perform but quake is there
t4 player: shoots accurately, moves thinkfully
t5 player: shooting dead on, positions himself well, knows angles and tricks

Apart from players that are clearly multi-accounting, most new players I see coming are t1 to t2 players. t2 players are able to handle t3 players enough to stick a bit but t1 players are insta-quitting at the moment and even worse: YELLED AT!

Sure t1 games wouldn't be as soft anymore but then t2, t3 and t4 would be skillmatched properly allowing a decently smooth transition to anyone sticking to the game and THEY are the one who pay and form a future community (well... I have not seen any stat but I have my easy guess).
Overall I believe that t1 fueled with a mix of long time t1 players (lol?), beginner t1 players and newcoming t2/t3 would be better for the global skillmatching. Even with your occasional slummer.
Make these games on big fucking maps and promote to the next tier by the end of one's first match if need be.

The two biggest points of frustration in tiers were for a long time t1 beginners giving up after one to two games and top "t3" players being too low for for t4 (and yelled at before bouncing back).
The current tier model starts getting wrong exactly on t3 at the moment. Games have a skill range too far for skillmatching 90% of the time. It's a game of "pick the noob/slummer to lose/win".
