You're not just paying for cpm3a, you're mainly paying to support the development efforts. Also, there will probably be patches to add in textures during the early access phase.

Yes but he still has a point. Steam Early Access is about seeing potential in a game, and imo for the very most people nice screenshots or videos are more convincing than a list of planned features, which is quite abstract to "outsiders" of the arena fps scene.

I dont have a preference, but what makes f2p bad and b2p good?

As far as I can see it

F2P:
- maybe more players
- maybe more cheaters
- possibility for pay2win (but not with reflex)
- almost certainly will have a cosmetic store or something
- its mothafuckin free

B2P:
- maybe less people trying it out
- maybe less cheaters
- B2P games are less likely to have stores but many still do (like reflex)
- its not mothafuckin free

I have a hard time convincing people to try out Quake as it is. Add a paywall on top of that and I'm pretty sure it'll become impossible, so F2P is the clear winner here, imo.

subscription in QL was for long time too expensive for such old game. f2p in QL could be much better.

For few subscriptions I could buy whole game forever in the past.

"Free-to-play" is a business model term which refers to being able to play some of the content for free. When people say F2P they don't mean totally free.

It is free. Just because some people you know have paid for cosmetics and stuff doesnt mean its not free. If they lock loads of stuff behind a paywall like LoL then I agree its bad, but that wouldnt be an issue for something like reflex.

I play lots of F2P games and never spend any money on them. I played like 200 hours of Rift completely for free. Planetside 2, Fistful of frags, loadout, tf2, dota 2, tribes, smite, lotro and loads more. Never a dime spent and I probably wouldnt have played lots of them if not for them being free.

If its free2play where they have locked 80% of the game behind microtransactions then I see your point. But if its a free game with cosmetics or other buyable features that dont change core gameplay then I dont see why its a problem.

I'm perfectly happy to pay for reflex. I already donated to them months ago and was prepared to give near $100 for them on KS. But if it was free I wouldnt be complaining. I could convince all my friends to play it too which wont be possible with it being $15

So there's been a bit of hype surrounding Reflex Early Access. Yes, it's hitting soon -- we've just got to wait for Valve to approve it.

You'll be able to grab yourself a copy a play immediately but before you do, you should be aware of what you're paying for.

When we say Early Access, we mean it. The game is playable but still completely unpolished and you won't see any huge difference between the Early Access build and what you've seen in the trailer/streams.

We don't have all the modes. The weapons are not final. The UI is ugly and basic. The editors don't support even half of the features we have planned for them. A lot of the sounds are pretty crappy. Most of the art is missing. We don't have matchmaking. We don't have bots.

In short, the game is going to be rough. Game development is a slow process, especially for a small, unfunded indie team. Reflex is not competition ready and won't be for a while yet. It's not ready to support a large scene.

For now, it's fun. It's playable. You can build maps. You can watch replays.

But it is a long way from finished.
