I just watched a Quakecon TDM VOD and 2gd emphasized how surprised he was to see that cypher appeared to make all the right decisions in his matches. Just a little anecdote. I do think that cypher can be a really good TDM player.

In 2014, he played in a mixteam with an unknown player from NA and Doomsday from Argentinia. Even if he carried that team, it doesn't mean much.

In 2011, he played in a team with cooller/draven/cypher. In this team, draven played awesome (top damage against ufx), cooller is not the type of player that usually needs to be carried in TDM (+3.7k net damage against Salivating Monstahz), and as I said above, cypher did an amazing job too (according to 2gd's analysis).

So while I agree that strenx was an all-around awesome player (duel/TDM/CTF) in 2009/2010/2011, I don't think he can do anything that cypher can't do (at least in TDM). We're yet to see cypher play CTF.

The 4th player on his CTF team in 2014 was cod47 from Argentina, not 'an unknown player from NA'. cod47/doomsday were carrying that team hard. cod47 was also hands down the best CTF player on that team.

In this match against Die14, strenx had a K/D of 86/33 and cypher had 48/12.

My evidence is that I was sitting behind them and listening to cod direct his teammates each map, as well as outcap them both. I'm glad you brought up KDA's though, as this just further proves that you guys arguing all these individually talented players coming together means that they will be or are a good team- have no idea what you're talking about.

CTF is hardly about KDA- the only thing that matters is caps. Plenty of the top CTF players from Q3 and even QL (myself included) would consistently post negative nets in matches while outcaping the enemy team 3-1.

From watching a few minutes of gameplay, it does appear like both strenx and cypher played pretty bad CTF. As you have pointed out in your post below, especially strenx having 86 frags as an attacker but only getting 1 cap makes it look like he didn't know what he was doing.

I initially didn't say that strenx/cypher were better than the Argentinian players. I said that it doesn't even matter, because they obviously didn't practice with them, so it's not indicative of how well they could possibly play CTF once fully integrated into a team and having learnt how to play in a team.

I'll freely admit that you're better than me, but that doesn't mean you get to talk shit about people and things you don't know. This mentality is even part of the reason why USA is no longer the first economical power in the world and has started to degenerate so much in every aspect that makes a nation despite having so much domestic resources and opportunities.

I touched on this in my primary response but just an FYI typically if players have more than.. oh I would say- a 2-1 KDA in CTF they are actually hurting the team/not playing optimally (unless they are defense- which strenx was not). This however is completely untrue given how their opponents could barely strafe jump and probably still used mouse-wheel to change guns.

According to QLranks, Clawz/dragoniz has 214 CTF matches. Fazz has 8, noctis has 33.

I don't expect them to carry the team. Ctf as a game mode allows you to accomodate inexperienced players because you usually have at least one or sometimes two positions that are very simple (holding mid on every map, home ra on some maps). You could easily teach any good player to play those positions to 90-95% perfection. Their lack of ctf knowledge would only really come into play in nonstandard situations when there is chaos going on on the map, the get a flag dropped etc. So with spart1e as def and dem0n as attacker at least they have the key positions filled and could challenge the top teams imo. Still the team would be much better with only one player who doesn't know ctf D:

Averagers has two amazing CTF players (spart1e, dem0n) and two beginners with the potential to play a limited role very well (noctis, fazz)

Strenx' team has one amazing CTF player (silencep), two already pretty good CTF players (strenx, clawz), and one beginner (cypher).

What will work better? I'm not sure we can actually predict this.

Silencep def, cypher mid, strenx&clawz off looks quite solid to me, as an example. I suppose they already have a decent plan.

(We have the uncertainty of not knowing where exactly clawz is on the spectrum from "pretty good" to "amazing", but it seems like he might already be closer to "amazing" than to "pretty good".)

Yea I watched clawz a bit in one ctf game and his aim was spot on at least, had a good sense of what to do in game too.

Strenx however, I remain dubious about. No offense to him he improved his duel game leaps since his "all lg no brain" beginning but in ctf pickups etc, whenever I watched him he was at the wrong place at the wrong time constantly and his big dmg dealing capabilities were mostly wasted.

Tdm I dunno but my guess is this team will have a bigger claim in that!.

Just one of possibly many counterarguments: In the Quakecon 2011 3rd place match against ufx, Strenx had +20 NET on Purgatory (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3O-QzyXjSo#t=42m55s)

Of course, 2011 was the prime of strenx' career where he got 2nd place in the duel tournament. He would probably need to play a lot to get to that level again.

Against fnatic in 2009, EG scored the 2:2 cap on ironworks in the 19th minute. They then won in overtime during a cross-cap situation. That's just one example of how close it was, I'm sure you'll find plenty more.

Good to hear that these guys are planning to go, but keep in mind that given the rules, only one of these four can participate in the duel stage.

It's possible that we could see a different, second player play duel from this team if they make it to the grand master duel finals, but do you really think that they'd select a player different from the one that got them to the grand master finals?

That probably means that we'll see Cypher, but not strenx or clawz, duel.

Most US players, for example, have no experience in playing clawz and probably would understimate him. Also there are probably some players who would do better against cypher than against lg whore like strenx

How about making the triathlon's duel stage Bo5 for example? That would be a minor change which shouldn't affect anyone in their decision how to form a team. It's ridiculous that it's supposed to be Bo3.

It won't affect the decisions on how to forma team, certainly. But you do realize it would have a significant impact on the tournament's duration, right? Even if it's just duel.

Note that this won't be a groupstage + double elimination duel tournament. It will be a Swiss tournament system. It should have considerably fewer match rounds.

Let's assume that there will be 8 teams. There will be at least 8 PCs available, so all matches within one round can be played simultaneously. Then there's a maximum of 7 match rounds to be played. Syncerror has already tried out the Swiss system with 4 rounds, so there might only be that many.

Each round has 3 maps, i.e. 30 minutes of match time. So if they have the matches played simultaneously, the actually required match time for duel is: 4 * 30 minutes = 120 minutes.

This makes it painfully obvious how much of a joke the currently planned duel stage actually is. It can be done in 2 hours.

Increasing it to a Bo5 would not be time-consuming. If they want to, they can still be done in 4 * 50 minutes = 200 minutes.

You also have to look at it from a different perspective. Let's compare how long each of the three modes will take.

The way I understand it, the number of matches played in TDM, CTF, and duel will be the same.* That's because all three modes are supposed to use the same Swiss system.

CTF and TDM matches are 20 minutes, duel matches are 10 minutes. But it's Bo3 in all three modes.

So currently, CTF and TDM will each be played twice as long as duel. Why would we want that?

If duel was Bo5, it should take roughly as much time as the other modes. It just makes sense.

* edit: Because TDM and CTF need more PCs, fewer matches can be played simultaneously. This will make them take even longer.

Since it also takes more time for 8 players to get ready than for 2 players, CTF and TDM will each take more than twice as long as duel. Why would we want that?

It's not a competition between duel and the other modes. Why is it important that one gametype's branch is shorter? The different parts of the tournament certainly won't be played simultaneously so it all adds up in the end. If you make a part longer, even if it's just to make it so it lasts as long as the other parts, you end up making the whole tournament longer.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't know the schedule in advance. I'm not saying it can't be done either. It might be possible to fit that in the tournament without reducing the number of rounds. I'm just saying it has an effect. Oh and also that since we don't know, it's stupid to say either option is "ridiculous".

There are four Bo3 rounds for each tournament. Let's assume a new round isn't played until the previous one hasn't ended. If we consider a Bo3 to be a Bernoulli trial with 25% (stats taken from last year's CTF tournament) probability of success (to reach 3 matches) and all matches in a round to be independent, then the probability one of them reaches 3 matches is ~90%. The probability for all 4 rounds to each need a duration sufficient for 3 matches to be played is ~66% which is significant enough to be considered and planned for in the schedule. This is important to me since I assume that the different parts of the tournament will have their own starting time determined ahead of time.
TDM :
estimated average match duration : 20 minutes
Planned duration : 20*3*4 = 4 hours without accounting for warmup or unexpected events

CTF :
estimated average match duration : 20 minutes
Planned duration : 20*3*4 = 4 hours without accounting for warmup or unexpected events

Duel :
estimated average match duration : 10 minutes
Planned duration : 10*3*4 = 2 hours without accounting for warmup or unexpected events

All participants must check-in to the tournament area by Thursday, July 23rd at 10:00am

I would expect the first tournament division to start by 1 pm, after the Player Meeting and dinner. The schedule feels right for it to be a team division, either TDM or CTF. Then everyone eats again. The evening would have either the duel division or nothing. I suspect the former. The following morning could be dedicated to the remaining team division. This leaves the afternoon of the 24th and almost all of the 25th for ???. Enough room for a yet to be announced Doom 4 tournament or something.

All three modes are equally important for the overall triathlon. I find it illogical that one of the modes is deliberately played half as long as the others.

Other than that, it will reduce the randomness of the duel competition if it's Bo5. So that would be a big plus.

Your calculations are the same as mine, so I don't see your point. TDM and CTF are designed to take at least twice as long as duel. Yes, 8 teams was an estimation on the conservative end. I don't know how encouraging or discouraging the tournament format is for American teams, especially for those below the top 4.

Strenx shouldnt be part of this team, you have cypher for duels, arguably the best all around dueler in quake history. Get another good team player and that team becomes a contender in the team modes too. Id even say if they train really hard, only 102 on tdm would be competitive.

Strenx probably can flag def like a boss, though.

I agree completely! You would be better off thinking what event: duel, tdm, or ctf you REALLY have a strong chance at and aim to win 2 of those. Anything else is a bonus.

I think 102 has the best chances by far if they make it to QCON, they deserve this QCON TDM chance the most, since they've been putting so much effort to tdm for so long and showing awesome results.
