The game isn't going to die any time, but it's not going to get a great second coming either in this generation.

The exposure they got was indisputably very valuable, the question is going to be what on earth, are they going to do with it next, if anything, and can they hurry up please.

While you do state your opinion about loadouts. It does sound like you're saying nothing else could've had as much of a positive impact as the changes they made.

So I would argue that QL is in a worse situation now than before the updates. The usage is trending downward. The user base's opinion is at best neutral and often negative.

Yakumo: You alone have done 100x more for QL on the PR front than the 3 people paid by ID! The user backlash over loadouts and the new announcer was massive. And the devs dealt with it by vigorously re-assuring each other that they had done the right thing, and ceasing all communication with the outside world.

.....and I for one still believe the Devs have actually given up one the game. There have been less updates in the last couple of months than in any stretch I can remember.

Yeah, I don't buy that, and neither do you! The criteria for success was established in advance, Syncerror doesn't get to cherry pick it retrospectively.
When this project was proposed to Id/Zenimax management, costs and desired outcomes would have been written out before the project got officially approved. Everyone knows that the whole point of the project was to increase player numbers, it's an obvious and easily measured stat.

The only scam statistic Syncerror could hide behind is subscription numbers. I say that it's a "scam statistic" because the Annual-subscription model means that it takes 12+ months before there is enough data to plot a trend. Anyone claiming success on partial data is intellectually dishonest.

Take me as an example: I subscribed for the last 3 years, but will not be renewing for obvious reasons. But since my subscription renewed last September, just before they ruined the game, Id has me on the books as a happy subscriber.

The subscriptions will have gone up during the initial Steam Release, while the disgusted veterans would not hit the balance sheet for months to come. So maybe Syncerror can hide behind the "Active subscriptions" number until around Sep / Oct 2015.
By that time player numbers will have collapsed to the point that QL could not be rescued even if you took over.

My point remains the same: Someone inside Id is Syncerror's boss. That person is not doing his/her job. The PR front is a disaster. Player number are trending dangerously downward, and indicate strongly that Active Subscriptions will decrease accordingly.

I'm sure that if they released Quake Live on Steam exactly as it was, without loadous and other bullshit, they would get exactly the same ammount of players. People didn't start playing because of loadouts, they started playing because it was Quake and because it was free. The changes only brought negativity.

I'm pretty sure player numbers are where they were before steam and are dwindling. They were somewhat steady pre steam. We'll probably see a small summer bump followed by what will likely be the lowest activity period for the game in its history. Purely my guess, but it's based on the trends...

I've played Quake since the very beginning (Q1). I learned what 'ping' 'T1' and IP addresses were playing this game.
And now I've witnessed it's deathspiral over the last 6 months. At this point the game is no longer worth playing, it's dead for me. Duel and CA are still twitching, but FAA and CTF are gone for good. Syncerror and Sponge killed them with their combined ineptitude.

The new TDM has loadouts, contrary to the new CTF. It didn't quite kill TDM though seeing as you can't kill the dead. It wrecked FFA though. "Kill" may not be the word since people still play it but it killed my enjoyment of it. Although to be fair, I didn't enjoy FFA much before either.

I don't know about the clan scene for TDM, as I wasn't involved with it for many years.

But pub TDM went from absolutely not happening at all, to games happening practically all the time, 3 full servers and one half full as I write this, not a lot, but more than the zero it always was before.

All in all there are too many variables to make a certain statement of the effect of each variable. Putting your own personal feelings and negative attitude in it does make it even harder, if not impossible to have an objective analysis. The graph shows a very steady game count of 75K-80K games per week before the changes and the Steam release. There is no positive/negative trend. Fast-forward to the present: Week 12 of 2015 reads 78.8K, with a downward trend.

Based on this data, I stand behind my statement: Had there been no changes, had there been no Steam Release, it is fair to assume that Week 12 of 2015 would have seen activity nearly identical to the actual measured value.

Personally I think the steam release was a good step, but instead of trying to make newbs happy with loadouts, they should have worked on making use of the steam workshop. Offer custom mods, maps, player models etc there.. that is what casuals love from my experience. It could eventually be combined with the subscription model to keep the base game free (that's how it should be imo).

I've talked to the devs on IRC. My suggestion was simple:
There are already 12 supported game modes, why not add 2-3 more which represent the original Classic game modes? Why not bring back the missing 19 maps as some of us liked them.

On both points Sponge was very clear: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
He countered my rational with: That is not the direction we want to go....

Now both requests would have required almost no work, as we are asking for something to be re-instated rather than created.

A ton of the changes people would all like to see certainly wouldn't have changed things, as most of them require some level of investment into the game before the user would even realise they existed let alone cared for them.

If you take a look at that arstechnica article, they estimated 0.9 million people have played the game, but another 0.9 million have it on steam but have never actually played it.
Ladders, matchmaking, any amount of new game modes wasn't going to make a big dent into a group that don't even actually try it out despite taking that first step.

You don't need to write a new game if the old one is good enough, and Quake is much more then "good enough". If you read/follow game design related studies and articles, you might also know that no game is predestined in terms of success/reception, you "just" have to make the right choices.
Yes the target audience might be different than (let's say) for MOBAs, and many will (indeed) never actually try the game (they probably only downloaded it because of recommendations or because of the historical name), but there are plenty of people out there for all kind of games, including hard core FPSes, let alone the mother of all FPS games.

LoL was pretty much word of mouth at the beginning. You won't find a single bit of advertising of it during its closed beta and open beta days, and those lasted for about two years (maybe three).

Marketing is hardly the problem, going to Steam pretty much invalidates all previous marketing complains from that moment on. Steam users are basically their core market, tons of them tried it, and moved on.

How about Team Fortress 2 -- one of the most popular pc games of all time, competed with QL, it still had items lying on the floor, rockets and stuff.

There could have been done many, many things and you know it. id software really, really, really screwed up QL's release and huge mistakes were made along the way.
For one, the network issues at crucial times are the main cause of QL's lack of popularity, including when it went open beta, then at release date and recently with the steam launch. The same mistakes, three times. People not being able to play the game at those times is why there's millions (yes, millions) of accounts without a single match played. It was very much foreseeable as well, since the developers were told by many people before hand that they should have focused on networking stability, also there was the positive example of LoL at the time (by then they had stated many times that their #1 priority was network stability), and c'mon, three times?.
For second, QL completely missed the mark when it comes to what people want in a browser game. When it was released it took hours on end to properly enjoy QL -including the mandatory match with crash, the hilariously bad interface, the overwhelming amount of mods, lack of party system, the complete lack of tutorials and of enabling steady progression that still exists to this day-, and that's the opposite of how it should have been. QL should have had CA as the main mod (more like RA3 -again something still lacking after 7 years-), then ffa and duel as side mods and that's it. No CTF, no TDM, no dozens of mods or of customization, no hundreds of maps and in the end no overcomplications.
Thirdly, when the QL team was downsized to the current two to three employees assigned to the project there was a crucial mistake made: you simply cannot designate an inexperienced worker as a project leader, especially when he is not a programmer and when he is cringeworthy shy as a person. We all are very much aware of syncerror's personal mistakes made during QL's development, but the problem in itself is not him but the person that put him in a position for which he was not qualified to. With his skills what sync is able to do is maybe releasing a map once a year, that no one is going to play, but that's not what the project needs and in the end QL never needed a syncerror. Also it would have been nice to have a project supervisor, as a whole, since even when looked from the outside it's obvious this project never had a set direction and in the end for years that QL has been a mapper and a webpage maker trying their best at things they have no idea about, such as game designing, programming and most recently tournament hosting (the current quakecon drama is 100% syncerror's fault).

That was a big waste. New players simply couldn't connect and try the game. Sync&sponge failed badly to secure some extra resources for QL, knowing how it was in the past launches.

It must have taken good amount of development time to implement the anti-fun loadouts, designed to help player retention in the low tiers but apparently not doing their job (while scaring us quakers away, but we're expendable).

I wouldn't really know, but my guess is that in the same time it was possible to add one-click player account creation tied to someone's steam id instead of asking people to give their emails before they can enter the game, which is a serious barrier for many players.

Not to mention after all this time, the authentication server is still unstable, so they can't really promote the game still (we probably lost lots of potential players in the days after the Steam launch simply because they couldn't join servers).

The problem was never with Quake gameplay, which we all know is superior to anything else, right? ;)

The problem was always with letting in more people who will fall in love with Quake like we did.

And now we have a new problem - there's nothing to fall in love with anymore because Quake Deathmatch is gone. :(

Right now the collective number of games played is right about where we started 6 months ago, before all the big changes and the Steam release.

Now I can appreciate putting a positive spin on these numbers by claiming "a huge number of people tried QL". It's one of the few ways Syncerror can argue success.

Allow me to counter:

- True, a huge number of People tried "loadouts QL", demonstrating the draw and marketing power of the Quake brand name. However, the vast majority of these people did not become regular players; i.e they liked the package, but not what they found inside.
- There was no reason to force the existing user-base to switch from the game they had played (and paid) to "loadouts QL", Lack of communication and lack of response to genuine community concerns alienated what had been a loyal userbase.
- Today the number of active QL players is roughly identical to where it was before the change to "loadouts QL". Hence the net accomplishments are ZERO. For every Steam player gained, one veteran player was lost. Actually the net accomplishments add up to less than zero: While the player numbers are back at pre-loadout numbers, community good will is not.

But no-one, not Syncerror, Sponge and not who ever is supposed to act as their boss, is willing to acknowledge any missteps. Even at its peak, the number of players have been laughable, and even more considering the game is free to play.

And since then, the numbers have done nothing but drop, dramatically.

Now there are on average 400 people playing. It's not even a 100 th of games like Counter Strike, and arguably those left are just (part of) the old playerbase.

you are among the persons who are not striking in their behaviour and or gamestyle. Your behaviour is flawless from their point of view. You won't complain, you just suck any directional change. You are not affected by being banned: Either by stating a valid opinion with good arguments (instead of simply flaming towards any change). Or that your gamestyle is somehow exceptional due to being non-conventional - this includes either a high performance which could be interpreted as cheating, or just by ridiculous gamestyle which totally messes with your mind. Those two target groups are banned despite having done nothing wrong.

These two groups of users are not those who are intentionally trying to ruin the game. Quite the contrary! They want to give in their feedback - some more, some less structured. They support the game either by playing it, promoting it by word-of-mouth, by pure enthusiasm or by paying a subscription. Then these specific two user groups get banned without any logical reason - such as the user wanna_fight. Now I don't exactly know what he did beforehand, and if things maybe got out of control, therefore I can not speak on his behalf in that case. But I can speak for the general state of affairs, that the public image of Quake Live is tarnished by these bans without reasons on users who had no bad intentions.

Do they get any compensation? Do they get their money back? Will they be nowadays contacted appropriately?

Now you can say that this is just a game and so, but people are not only investing their time, but more than that, things money can't buy. It's like any hobby you have. And yes, these few bucks you invest is not that much compared to many other hobbies. Especially because we are having more responsibilities each day, we want to enjoy our hobby. I want to enjoy this hobby, without living in fear that I could be banned with no reason at all.

Everything has been stated so often what is wrong with the QL community leadership, with the game and so on. This game needs more more incentives for long-term gamers to continue to play. And being treated like that as a paying user is not the correct way how to deal with persons. This is poison for the community.

If we want to discuss things, which should be radically improved, then there are so many real-life problems which need a solution, where we can spend our energy and life into it. A game should be fun, enjoyable, competitive, driven by a good community management. If we want to get annoyed, we don't need to pay for that, we don't need to drive into virtual worlds. There are new challenges each day in life, which need to be solved - and time is scarce.

In private Yak is actually really vocal about things, so much so that I'm surprised they put up with him. I've seen him throw a fit many times over certain changes and he really let's em' have it.

Yak is more on people's side than they realize, he just keeps his complaints to where he thinks it will make the most difference.

A big part of the problem is that Yak and I both are fairly competitive, old school players. We don't want the game dumbed down, we don't want the skill ceiling to be lowered.

Steam release was bad. Steam changes were bad. QL survived despite all the whine. FFA is actually challenging again: You can't finish in 4 min with 40 LG. Infact 40 LG puts you near the bottom. Not so happy about that, but it makes the scores alot closer for the +forward RL player.

HMG is still retarded and kinda better than LG at certain distances. Why do we need TWO of the same weapon with very slight differentiation? Let's just add guns that are tweaked versions of existing guns and shove them all into a map. HMG is the worst thing, and looks even sillier with LG nerf.

But...I think HMG is an ode to the heavy nailgun. That's nice, but QL players are mostly pragmatic, or won't get the reference. So you are going to shove an ostrich into the game anyway, for the sake of some homage?

Base players are going to LOVE that.

Bringing the game to steam was a good move. At least the game is discoverable now by the masses. The problem is that in this day and age the absence of having a good match making system and anti cheat means no users will stay around because they get placed in games that are too skilled and distrust that skill ceiling is actually legit. These are things that have been asked for since day one.
