Been my case since i started playing Quake...

Community wanted to host their own servers from the beginning.
Well now (soon) is your time to shine and prove that you can do better, than ID did in that regard.

I expect a lot of people to be surprised, remembering that argument "derp, I played for 15 years on private q3 servers and since I never paid for it personally, surely this things are growing on trees, thus QL should be free too!"

I'd rather spend few bucks on server support than shitload of bucks on "pro" account in ql 2.0

That's the whole fucking joke, bethesda are pulling the plug on the servers because QL is hopeless but sync is using the past ESR whine from a few loudmouths to pull the "hey we love you guise and we know you all really fuckin wanted custom servers so we did our best and we managed to make it happen, took us a quite a fight with the suits up top but we fought tooth and nail and we got em in the end :D congrats!" card.

It's pretty fucking obvious public servers (removing loadouts) was the only way to keep a minimal amount of momentum going for this game, but removing pubs is suicide. Thanks SpongeError for your non-existent prioritaztion skills over the last 7 years! Too bad there's no ladders, matchmaking and anticheat, but hey, at least we got all those new maps nobody plays and the new voices nobody asked for.

Now the game will be ridden with kankerbot servers, fine-tuned by their respective OCD basement dwelling landwhale asshole owners to mute you, move you to red team, unmute you, move you to spec, shuffle perfectly good teams, mute you again, spam you with the motd a couple of times then kickban you for having too many letters in your name.

Asshole server owners for a dying game are not a problem. I played q3 up until almost 2014 and the server owners seemed very aware that they need to treat everyone correctly or they'll end up with a dead, empty server.

The main thing is who will be hosting the hub part where people meet up etc? Steam? I've never used steam before so IDK what it is. If steam takes the place of the QL server browser and chat/friend area then will will be more than fine.

The main thing I'm looking forward to is seeing if anyone will mod the game a bit. I'd like a QL mod that would make QL exactly like Q3 as far as the movement. Some people say they are the same, but QL was sped up or something. They way the players move is different. It's faster. Q3 was more fun.

In reflex, the servers arent centralized and contrrolled by the developers so you don't get these kind of problems

There are 84 total servers. Currently, 11 people are playing on 6 active servers.

And still the servers are geographically better distributed than the ones for ql, where hundreds/thousands of people each pay 30$ a year (ayy lmao) for their maintenance. Reflex costs you 10$, once.

the hardest part of reflex movement actually comes from quake.

The rest of the post may be true, but I think you didn't try the game.

If they just would have made a quake clone with bad ass graphics and fatalities and maps QL people may have defected.

But ya, promode was only attractive to a subset of quake players. And if you look at the Reflex tournaments on Zlive, or the promode tourneys, they are very difficult (or not enjoyable) to watch even if you are a veteran quake player. Quake 1v1 has a certain rhythm and suspense, gives both players and specs a chance to think.

I REALLY prefer QL owned servers because it's easy to join/spawn servers and its all centralized.

Now you will have community servers with abusive server owners who will auto ban/whitelist users.

In the late days of q3, server owners themselves were hardly around. A lot of them were just guys who used to play quake who kept the servers running because it's a nice thing to do. They give certain players admin, and if the owner starts to get complaints about admins they get replaced.

That's Q3 and it was in the past.

Things are different now.

There's still a lot of cool people in the quake community (people that set up the tourneys and donate etc). And there are enough guys that work in/own server farms etc that like to host game servers just to be cool and because they can. All the NA quake community needs is a handful of these people spread out around the country.

Server owner typically run about 3 servers, like ctf, ffa, duel.

Can anyone explain what's the point of having a pro subscription after the next update? Im about to cancel mine because lowest ping I have right now is 80ms. What a joke, id. Not even news about this, you just leave people with an useless subscription while you keep milking them money.

Don't you guys think its possible that the server spawning system could work in the same way as it does now, but they are on community owned servers instead?

I don't know, but that might be logical since the system all ready exists. It just need to change hands so to speak.

So you will still have the same possibility's as you do today with pro, but there is also a lot of extra stuff we can do from then on, such as unranked and lan servers etc.

Its just a guess.. i bet there is no need to panic yet.
Even if i would to loose any advantages i will keep on paying for quake as long as i can run it on GNU/Linux.

Just to be clearer on that because there seems to be some confusion : the company id dealt with to pay for those servers went bankrupt.
That doesn't mean id will turn all of their servers off by September.

They will keep DE servers and progressively shut down the rest with time. It is up the community now to try to host servers and/or find companies willing to do so for us at a certain cost or free.

Best chances we have is to go for a crowd funding within our community and assign someone to use the money to pay for the hosting of some servers in Europe.

A business like Meltdown Bar, London, would maybe consider putting together a UK, QL server.

These things need to be looked at sooner rather than later.

Reflex is looking better indeed.

I only ask myself one question: why would reflex work? It is a copy of quake3 CPM .. It already exists.. Nothing new compared to q3a..

The one advantage would have been the communty based servers but that will soon be possible with quakelive...

It has nice game physics, nice maps, an active developement, is free/opensource, and runs an linux/mac/win

Being able to curve your rockets around corners might not be a good competitive gameplay decision, but its fun as fuck. Most of the xonotic combat is really fun, theres just too many guns

Its like wc3 to Dota 2 right? CPMA is an old mod for an old game.

Release a modern standalone spiritual successor to that mod and you can reach a wider audience and hopefully get more people playing.

By the time Reflex is finished we should be able to expect all sort of things from matchmaking, steam workshop support, modern graphics and all the other things you cant get in cpma and its all in an affordable single download on steam.

Although as mentioned in the past, they have spoken about changing the gameplay in future to differ it even further from cpma

Spanish lolca servers were pretty much busy from 10am to 4am daily

Good community too but with many that couldn't ping well to DE so were essentially confined to ES servers.

They are left with nothing at the moment.

Stop mourn, here in Chile since the start of QuakeLive, the community pays for the servers.

When the server chili was created, (I do not remember what year), two people bought the hardware, and paid the housing of the machine. so it was for many years.

Then those two people were bored, and a group of people began to donate money to pay for, so it was for a long time until they could no longer domestic problems.

so the story continues with more people paying, doing events to raise money, etc, etc.

And now thanks to the efforts of a community member the server is hosted on a company that "gives us" the virtually free service, we just have to do some advertising for them (fb, tw, g+).

So I invite you to stop mourn and donate money, buy a pc and pay the rent of housing, then contact with ID, and give them the IP, and they control the server from there. PROBLEM SOLVED.

PD: Even now I think ID, allows virtual machines, which makes the issue even easier.
