Map editor. Makes it stupidly easy to create and test a map. That will be what eventually sets the game apart.

Creating your own maps for a fps game was exciting in 2005.

I do not think Reflex can ever set itself apart from similar games through cool fancy features, for that the concept of an arena fps is just too simple and there have been developed too many games of that genre.

On the other hand: provide a modern engine, proper netcode, an easy way for players to find each other (read: matchmaking), balanced physics and weapons, and you are already better than 99% of what is out there. Or to put it simply, do what you do right, that sets you apart.

Yes to all those things. But what OP asked is what currently sets it apart. Which, imo, is the map maker. If you've ever used gtkradiant, the reflex editor (while doesn't have as many features) is incredibly faster and more intuitive and you can play test maps while you build them. It's huge for a game still in development. How many more quality maps will be produced because of the ease with which one can make them?

The single player is fun (unlike it's prequel / sequels). Huge world, free-roaming all around. And the map editor is REALLY-REALLY simple and nice.

While I agree fc2's map maker was extremely good, it had it's limits. It was also, in my experience, extremely buggy. Crashed all the time on the console (i never played the pc version). I spent hours and hours on a map which I ended playing with my group of friends for many more hours. The crashing was abysmal. It's stupid how many games can get so much right while fucking it up all the while.

reflex isn't targeting quake players. This is not a game for quakers but pseudo-quakers, the only game in the universe for quakers is quake. This is a different game that's why you people don't dig it. Many people from team fortress or csgo are enjoying this movement quite a lot, unlike people from vq3.

pql and reflex are different things btw, mechanics are executed differently. Just because they both have aircontrol doesn't make it the same, hell, csgo has aircontrol.

but anyway i'll try to get into ur skin; if quakelive has more players and it has vq3 while reflex has less players with different movement than vq3... it's an easy choice. Play quakelive.

everybody is complaining about the low support ql is getting... imagine a finished reflex but with cpm and vq3 physics.... with all it's features it would basically be QL 2.0

and with id pulling the plug on ql "while it's still profitable", it would be a great opportunity for reflex to gain new players from the QL playerbase... i think thats far more realistic than hoping on people from cs or tf

Or he can just play Reflex like he does Quake? Reflex movement combines Q-Q2-Q3 movement, so just because air-control and double-jumps are there, doesn't mean your forced to use them. Just stick with strafe jumping and cj's and you'll be allright. IMO it would be an easy transition.

CPMA and cpm/promode are NOT the same thing.

CPMA is the mod, cpm is the gameplay mode with aircontrol and such.

There's is also cpma vq3, which doesn't have aircontrol.

Why is so hard to understand that QL is lacking bunch of stuff, which some other game like Reflex could potentially implement ? It's only natural to seek improvements in all areas of the game you like to play, hence try to switch to other game which might have certain things.

However lacking in one major aspect like game physics is enough of a concern to not switch to anything else, but interest is always there ofc.

It's hard to understand because it either suggests that some think the universe revolves around vq3/ql (why not ask UT4 to add QL movement? ) or that the Reflex developers want to split their designs and mimic QL to get a small population of players who relentlessly whine about their game of choice.

What they are now doing is mimicking CPMA with an even smaller population..

Quake Live: 6,154 all-time peak

and ql isn't even steam only atm...

Reflex features are based on CPMA, and the gameplay is based on CPM, like a sequel, I guess.

There have been plans for a stand-alone cpm game for many years now.

At this point, numbers are irrelevant. This is an early access beta made by fans of QW and CPM in their spare time. If Reflex is 1.0 and still has those numbers, then it'll be fair criticism.

you seriously need to play some other games to understand just what a failure ql is. There are hundreds of thousands of players in most mediocre games and millions in the successful ones.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not saying reflex should add vq3 or maybe shouldn't. Point is people have interest in this game, even though that interest is not really identical to yours (cpma players in general). Still, it's a valid interest and shouldn't be met with such resistance (Then you must be perfectly content. No need to think about ever playing anything else since QL is what you want to play. ),when people only need informations about next possible game of choice.

I disagree. It sounds like the "people" you are talking about are not interested in Reflex. It sounds like these people are interested in QL with all the features of Reflex.

In my mind, you're interested in Reflex, in part, because of the movement and gameplay. It's like saying you're interested in Quake but want UT movement. Why not just play UT if you're not really interested in something new/different to UT?

I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'd love for more people to give CPM style movement and gameplay a genuine chance. But Reflex is not vq3/ql for a reason. The devs don't want to make QL 2.0. They want to make something new that's, hopefully, much more popular, fun, and exciting to play.

CPM never really had a chance to grow as fully as vq3/ql (being a mode and mostly known only to other quake players). Maybe with Reflex, it'll get the chance it deserves.

Well I never said that QL is what I want, or don't want. I am only here to find out what Reflex is, if it does have air control, and if it has an option to not have air control. And I asked what the differences are between Reflex, and QL and Warsow, because those two games I have played, so that's what I have available to compare them to.

It doesn't seem that you're willing or excited to learn a different style of movement so I'd say reflex has nothing to offer to you.
Warsow has simple movement if that's what you like.

If you want you can play reflex the same way you play quake live but eventually you'll realize how slow you move around corners vs other players. You'll also struggle with getting certain items because it requires you to learn trick jumps. This may not be good for you.

cpm movement is the main reason i play this and IMO is what really makes it special (if anyone says it's like wsw, pql or whatever, they have little understanding/experience on this movement)

aside from that it has a nice netcode and incredible coop map editor.

However the game is far from done, it has a great starting structure but there's a ton of stuff missing (we're on 0.36 alpha). Buy it or add it to wishlist for the next steam sale.

+1 for the map editor especially, you can invite people to playtest your map and make live changes to it

Yes. No offence. Quake (any quake) has not the least bit of realism in it mechanically, and that is what makes it good.

No headbob, no headshots (or other silly you're-hurt-more-if-the-enemy-hits-you-at-a-specific-location-on-your-body system), no aiming down sights (in the real world you can't hit shit by firing from the hip, since you couldn't hold your gun straight for more than one shot and you don't know where it's actually pointing), etc.
Instead quake has completely wacky but simple mechanics that wouldn't make any sense at all in the real life. A movement system that gets you up to ridicoulus speeds by leaning in a certain direction midair (after about a second you're faster than any human can run) and allows you to travel with the help of explosions near you, a completely static crosshair with no spread or recoil on almost all weapons, none of which make *any* sense btw, a health system that gets you from a-slight-touch-and-you're-gone to perfectly-fine by picking up some blue bubble floating midair, and the fact that you're able to carry an arsenal of 10 guns with you constantly with no impact on being able to move. The list goes on.

They are not mechanics that could work at all in the real world, but they don't have to. They must bring solid gameplay, and they do. The problem is that good but unrealistic gameplay is not popular. Most other shooters like try to appear more realistic (dominantly through looks), probably because it sells. But unless we start talking about the ARMA kind of level of realism, pretty much all of them are completely non-sensical in their mechanics.

Nothing really special. Reflex is Warsow of these days, hype still high for this game, if we can say this hype is "high". I personally hate CPMA because it's still Quake 3: Arena but with QW mechanics and speeds, feels like pornography for me, QW fan. Railgun makes things different, for sure. Reflex is another recipe of CPMA and nothing more. Map editor is cool thing, yeah, but goddamn boring robots with boring sounds nothing cool at all. "E" rating sucks, game need style, non so handmade as it's already looks like, especially after cell-shedding addictions. Gameplay must be something special too, but I understand "it's only another CPMA clone because arena FPS dead genre bla-bla-bla, gimme railgun with 200DMG in Super Mario 2". I was actually wondering if reflex devs gonna put some time into storyline of a sort. Not to make changes in gameplay, but to implement something that ppl can relate to. Like csgo is bad example, since its based on reality more or less (bad vs good guys), but every other game, even q3 at some point, had characters, diff story behind them, relations in between. I think its quite big part of overall game's success, i mean, its cheesy and perhaps subgame level, but ppl would, probably, not be interested in drawing doodles of current playable robots/characters or theorycraft some history or scenarios why these robots are fighting each other.. You know.. Good game should feed the brain/imagination imo(, provide ground for future projects, like a book for exmpl), and, even a little, to be thought of outside actual gaming process (by ppl who are not playing atm) in other ways than engine/gameplay/features/map design topics.

Perhaps: a singleplayer mode in distant future. But there is need in voice actors, i suppose, and other costly things

on another note, its kinda hard to put a story behind the meaning of the game and not step on 'tekken' or 'ut99' toes. at best what can be done is to create a bio for playable characters/ models (provided that there will be more than one). But to describe the game's meaning without mentioning words like pc, players and game, is not something to look into atm.

Well armor doesn't tick down and the red has a higher absorption rate (either 75 or 80 percent, can't remember) than in ql. Imho control is stronger in CPM than in QL, but I'm sure ESR is just itching to prove me wrong on that one.

Esr is almost completely irrelevant nowadays when it comes to arena fpsers, as much so as the genre itself. People come here to have a laugh, maybe blow off steam and sometimes just discuss all things nerdy.

Luckily a fire starts every now and again. Avek being a great example. Generally I think for reflex, any publicity is good publicity. The peeps who bash it aren't going to hurt anything, and the supporters aren't going to increase numbers too quickly.

At least reflex isn't being disingenuous; one set price for alpha, new things to come, dedicates servers, maps, three tireless devs.

Every time hitsu writes something it puts a little smile to my face, not because he's funny in some satire trolly way, but because he represents the QL side of arguments, making CPM side arguments overall look that much more better.

Reflex is right now a tech demo. I have never played a tech demo this solid. I know the quake community is like "omg reflex so gay guise because like its that air control thingy and it like doesn't just go strafe stafe down a linear hallway omg so frustrating can't aim lulz."

Being that its a tech demo its SOLID. More solid than quakelive will ever be. Also, it doesn't require a subscription to create your own server. Server cost is very, very low. People play it. I can get games in reflex faster and easier than in Quakelive.

Steam integration. This is big in my opinion. As someone who likes to play games with people we can play different games and see what each other are playing and join or get games together if wanted or needed. (not really a new feature)

QL's steam integration is poor. It eventually broke the launcher for me and a uninstall/reinstall even with removing all of the directories did not resolve.

Most of all the devs listen to the community. They make and test changes granted they still have a vision and that vision is great. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Win or Lose. Reflex is great. Until a new quake comes out I just don't see a need to play quakelive anymore. Not with reflex in the picture.

i m just gonna name a bunch of guys i consider important in reflex and they have nothing to do with cpm.

Kovaak: qw player, doing awesome youtube series for new players.

Launders and nathan: part of boxr from cs, they love movement based games, they streamed some cups they hosted. It was the most popular cup in reflex. 1000 euro prize pool.

Qualx: he comes from mobas but he picked up reflex nicely, he made nice huds for spectators with LUA scripting, very important for a good spectator experience.

Promeus: doing maps and getting the editor to a whole new level, his last ctf map required the main coder of turbo pixel to rewrite part of the optimization code.

Tehace: I never seen this guy around cpm while i played it, he is doing most famous maps.

def: from osp, made great maps too, most downloaded ones in reflex files.

meowgli: useful lua scripting.

bonuspunkt: giving shitloads of support on forums to everyone and doing nice lua stuff as well as maps.

The greatest thing which makes Reflex better, is that it is still at its inception phase and is actively developed.

Its funny how the cpmers took the troll bait above, and will write anything to prove they are not controlling reflex development / direction in anyway. Clearly shows whose interests I stepped into.

Okay, here is the deal:

I actually like to play CPM more than QL/VQ3 (unfortunately it is pretty much dead in NA right now), in both team based modes CTF and TDM its far better than vanilla. I dont personally like the CPM duel mode because to me it seems far more catered towards mechanical skills and spawn rape strings than thought. However, lets be honest here reflex started as being a cpma standalone (what PMX was supposed to be) and devs are now tweaking aspects of the game to be original, something different from its parent game. Now, its also true that majority of dedicated reflex players that do provide feedback to developers are mostly cpm and some qw players, who are going to shape it like the things they are used to, which will result in a great competitive game for the hardcore portion of the players but it will not attract masses migrating away from quakelive OR gather new people. Which at this phase is really needed. Basically then it will repeat the fate of warsow, great game and engine overall but no players.

I am blaming the CPM community leftovers for doing what is right from their perspective but failing to see the big picture, what can we do that some day reflex has a chance of as big of a following as CS:GO ? Even if BOXR threw 1 million dollar at it, it wont get any better, remember painkiller? What is really needed is to create an arena shooter that if a newb plays he immediately feels hooked to it, the effect original q3 had, unfortunately reflex's current direction is not going to take it there. Unless you guys take a hard look at that and try to change it, you are going to get another game for you and your 16 buddies and eventual death just like warsow.

Edit: matchmaking is the biggest upcoming game changer. In the year 2015 you need a working matchmaking so people can get games of their skill level super easily.

Special consideration should be paid to allowing you to join games together as a party to play those casual team modes with your friends.

Is reflex too execution heavy? Is that it? The movement and ruleset are not complex if you have an attention span of over 15 seconds. Sadly most people don't want to LEARN to play a game - they just want to pick it up and go.

I've been really busy lately, and haven't really been in the loop in terms of Reflex or FPS games in general, so I could be totally wrong at this point in time. However, as someone who has played a significant amount of time playing CPM with you I'm a bit disappointed in your perspective. I really think you are the one failing to see the big picture.. or rather, the lack of one.

Turbopixel didn't create Reflex to be the "AAA blockbuster FPS ESPORTS TITLE OF THE AGES", they created it because it's simply the kind of game they wanted to make, play and enjoy. The fate of the entire former quake scene and FPS scene is irrelevant, and more importantly the fact that the game is essentially an updated version of CPM is irrelevant. Don't enjoy the game, community, or where the direction of development is going? Don't play. But if you do enjoy one of the three, the least you can do is try to provide constructive criticisms towards that instead of whining about the games "direction" on esreality.

I'd love nothing more than to see Reflex at a Dreamhack, or have it's own tournament series every year... But that's extremely unrealistic in terms of where the game is at and will be in the next couple years. Turbopixel doesn't have the amount of funding, backing, and team size to make the current game on par with what an esport ready FPS game needs.

You're preaching true words brother. The devs are making a game that they want and are passionate about. The last thing we need is a soulless AFPS that nobody wanted to make. These guys know what they're making and why, and it shows in how everything's coming together. It will never be a massive game, but as long as we get a few years of tournaments and pub TDM/CTF then the game is a success in my books. In under a year I've already gotten more from my money than I would from games that cost 6x as much, and our Aussie community isn't going anywhere.
