I think it means the skins need to be of the same set of skins. if you have camouflage models and pink models you have to decide for a coherent set? dunno, thats all he said.

You can enable custom models ON A SERVER and then all players who connect will automatically download and use them.

You can't have custom models on vanilla servers.

(Swapping models can lead to cheating - remember same model is used for enemies so you can make it huge and bright. So server admins are in control and all clients have the same advantage.)

He assumes the game will become more popular, but not to the point idsoftware/Zenimax would become more interested in putting resources into QL than into other projects of theirs such as Doom 4, Quake 5 or Commander Keen 2020. Rather reasonable.

Also, id abandoning QL is another sign of them now developing Quake 5, as obviously they wouldn't want to compete with themselves. (the other sign is that they don't have any other successful franchise that could use a sequel made by them).

They have Wolfenstein, Doom and Rage, all 3 with titles confirmed in development (Doom 4, Rage 2 are confirmed and a sequel to Wolf:TNO that was accidentally revealed by a Polish blonde).

So there's a nice queue of titles in the other franchises that are currently being worked on.

Surely they're planning Quake 5, but it can be another 10 years before that actually materializes ;)

How do you connect ql to steam? U gotta download it all again?

I downloaded ql on steam, it then asks you if you want to create a new account or connect an already existing one.

Atm you can pause or stop the download then copy or move your pk3 files over from your stand alone install to save lots of bandwidth.

I tried starting the download, then paused and copied all the pk3 files here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\downloading\282440\baseq3 because there's no Quake Live folder yet in Steamapps. But when I resume the download it tries to replace all the pk3 files.
So I don't know exactly what to do, can you be a bit more specific?

In that case I'd try cancel the download, hopefully Quake Live will still be listed in your library, create the Quake Live folder so it's as below :


C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake Live\

and a baseq3 directory within that, then move the pk3 files into that folder , and then try within steam - properties on Quake Live -> Local Files tab -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.


If this doesn't work, the total download is 1gb, it's not huge for a steam game.

Regardless, when the new update appears you will have to download it all again anyway.

This, and 1G today is a very small download for most household internet connections.

You need a key now because this is the testing version. They don't want to make it public yet, just for people who know and love Quake that want to help by playing. When it's finished and polished it will be publicly released - no more keys.

Short notice? This has been known for months!

Seems to be some confusion between ql on steam (no key required) and the ql beta (also on steam but key from them required while its beta).
The latter they'll want testing as much as possible before it goes fully public and that's not far off now.

yakumo has been saying for years that the steam population is just a very small percentage of the total playerbase often times linking back to the 10s of thousands playing on the ql leeto page. Now we see how ironically false that propaganda was and how much Yakumo lied for the past 6 years everytime someone said something negative about QL.

I don't think you (raythenoob? cooloutac?) have played Quake in many years, because you are assuming that right now QL is steam-exclusive, when in fact it is not today and it never has been. That makes your whole premise wrong and so is your conclusion.

So, Yakumo is right. What's accurate for QL is ql.leeto.fi, while steamcharts is way off. He did not spread "false propaganda".

Steamcharts will be more accurate for QL than what it is now, once the new (and last) update makes the game be steam-exclusive. Until then it's better to wait for the results (a couple of months).

The ql.leeto.fi stats are 11k unique players over the course of 24 hours.

Steam stats are players who have the game open at the same time. There is a difference.

What noctis said + that only a small portion of the playerbase uses Steam to play the game, therefore right now the steamcharts stats are way off for QL. You are assuming that QL is steam-exclusive, but it's not.

In other words,
1.- ql.leeto.fi is by far the most accurate way to measure how QL is doing.
2.- ql.leeto.fi will still be more accurate than steamcharts after QL goes steam-only, due to what noctis said.
3.- When QL goes steam-only in the upcoming weeks, then you will be able to compare ql.leeto.fi with steamcharts, plus reliably compare steamcharts stats with other games.

2. is wrong. Unless rulex gets access to every server anyone is ever going to host, he won't be able to get the same stats as before since stats are now aquired on a per server basis (those that give him access) and not from a central API.

From what i gathered rulex has already added support for the steam only release but his data set will never be as complete again as it is currently.

Edit: Actually this only applies if his stats just come from match stats (which he is what he is doing i think). Anyone can still just query the master server and check how many people are currently on a server, but that would probably just show the same number as steam stats. Maybe less since steam numbers show people who have the game open (they don't have to be on a server or actually play).

At time of writing, top accuracy in the URL you gave is derTommy, shown as 59.52 LG_A. However if I then dig into the detail for this player ( http://ql.leeto.fi/#/players/derTommy/weapons...t=Accuracy ), this shows much lower LG accuracy (< 30).

It also highlights that this player rarely uses LG, and so the average accuracy isn't likely to be accurate anyway as there isn't enough data to draw any useful conclusions on it.

This, checked some rg accs and the same happens, top guy is listed at 100% but on details its 45.

So, no one clearly told why is so urgent to switch asap to steam ql? We will lose our accout/nickname or what? If QL gets:
-optimized maps so we dont have lag/performance spikes on some of the new ones
-vac so the cheaters will finally get fisted for good
-graphics tweaks because why not
-steam workshop so we can make obscene things to use ingame
-stats removed/reworked so people will finally start playing this game for fun like we did in 90s and not like now where veryone faps to their elo and cries over lost percents of accuracy
-a dev team that has their heads on their shoulders and not up their asses
-game forums that are not filled with nazi mods deleting anything that doesnt conform to their real and imagined forum rules
-good technical support with devs listening keenly to what quakers say

...then we might finally, FINALLY get somewhere after all of these years.

Sync and Sponge, please dont fuck this up. We had our ups and downs, we gamers and you devs but we trust you not to break the game but to revive it or at least go down fighting. You have enough experience after all of these years to finally bring in some serious ordnance and make the difference.

- From what I've read in Twitch chats, gibs are coming back. For that you'll have to add/link them to your account in Steam, as free DLC (so two clicks). About the very important issue of Teletubbies models, I'm not sure (please correct me) but I think there will be support for custom player models via Steam Workshop, and most likely those were already made for Q3.

- From trying out the beta myself, the game is now much more optimized. You can even feel a difference when playing with 250 FPS. Personally I have never experienced FPS issues with QL, but since the game as a whole runs considerably better now then those issues must have considerably diminished, despite this not being a direct fix like improving performance of those particular maps.

- VAC will be the QL anticheat from now on. Well, you have to take into account that it is impossible to entirely remove cheating from videogames, as in every single game out there there's people that keep on creating new working cheats, but at least the new anticheat (VAC) will make most current cheaters go away, as their current cheats won't work and the majority of them are lazy. Plus, now that QL requires a Steam account then those obsessed recurring cheaters ("Daddy_") will have to go through extra hassles to create new accounts after being caught, discouraging them to the point they might as well go cheat in other games that don't have an anticheat to begin with (I suggest Reflex Kappa).

- No graphics tweaks. However, there's a couple of new official CTF maps that I think are the best looking maps in the game. Plus, you'll be able to upload your own good-looking custom maps to the Workshop (I have no idea if you can use textures that aren't in the game).

- There will be extensive Steam Workshop support.

- QLRanks won't work with this new Steam-only version. Elo and stats whoring is gone.

- This will be the last patch (or common sense tells me there will be one more with bug fixes). From now on there won't be developers in charge of the game, or any more development of it. Don't be sad though, since this patch will implement pretty much all that we wanted, including all what you wrote and much more stuff too, such as support for custom maps, the ability to upload your own servers (LAN included) and now the game will be 100% free of charge (no subscriptions, no pro servers that split the playerbase).

- The current official forums will be taken down, as from now on the game will have them on the Steam platform. I imagine moderation will much more lax there, if any, since there won't be paid moderators. And TBH, who cares about the official QL forums anyway, that have next to no activity and everyone there is a total noob. The real QL forum is and always has been ESR, with Twitch chat being QL's IRC.

- When playing the new version next week you'll see for yourself that the devs did listen, and you won't be disappointed. If everything goes remotely as well as it should go then starting next week QL will be a way better game; or rather how QL should have been from the start. For example if map converters work (those used years ago to have working Q3 defrag maps in QL) then might as well upload all the RA3 and WCP maps to the Steam Workshop ourselves since day 1, and I even remember reading that the game will support custom mods too (no idea about the extent of that).

Tbh I almost lost entire faith in QL devs after all of that meddling with updates and tweaking . When QL hit the waves in 2008 I briefly considered joining beta but told myself to screw it and wait for final project...then I joined the so called prerelease in 2009 that was essentially a q3 port with browser as launcher. And somewhere in 2010-11 it all started going downhill. Looked like the devs didnt know how to handle the game itself and the fact that the f2p model with revenue stream from advertising essentially failed and the game had financial issues. Then came that unholy sept 11th update and it looked that all was lost.

Fast forward to present state and incoming update.

What you wrote about no devs and final product kinda makes QL like all other cd-based quakes before it, a complete, gold release that might or might not get patches (if any) but is no longer actively tweaked. Also you wrote about the game being completely free. So they decided to drop the ball on any income from this?

If so, I suppose QL will remain a ghost IP in zenimaxs portfolio, kind of a closed, finished freeware. Sounds sad because we all know that QL was supposed to revive the quake craze and bring in hard earned money. In other words QL has failed and what we get here is a last swan song, something akin to walking off the stage with grace. In other words, they allow QL to die with dignity (paradoxically this 'death' might totally revive this game).

No income, but at the same time the running costs will be much.lowered (no devs, no official servers paid by id).

those same devs, sponge and syncerror are now working for quake 5 so expect more of the same failures in future quake titles.

Not yet but VAC will be there as soon as this new version is released. That said, an anti-cheat isn't a miraculous solution that stops all cheating and I'm pretty sure the hackusations will still be going strong after the switch.

I don't know why I feel like I should be feeling something but I simply don't.

I don't know if I just don't care any more or that I have other stuff to think about, but this whole steam transition, no more official id support, ditching the client et cetera doesn't phase me one bit.

If anything it leaves me completely empty and apathetic.

I still play, so anything that means that I can still play is good if the alternative was nothing.
And FFA being playable again and voicecoms are all fun :)

I've loaded Q3 a few times over the last few years, I just really do think QL is nicer to play. It's much smoother and lots of little tweaks over the years have really improved it. I loved Q3 to bits but it just feels .... clunky now.

Bar some of the mods (that are basically dead anyway) all Q3A has left over QL that actually appeals to me is the better openGL render in ioQuake3, but as I can hold 250fps on any map in QL that doesn't really matter to me either, it would just be nice for others.
