My apologies, I don't read xsreality too often and just noticed this a few months after the posting. This post will be more in a conversational sense, and not so much a edited writing.

The only contribution to the memorabilia is my view on the tournament. My view is a bit unique in that I was one of the main admins and the creator of the scheduling system that was used.

One of the tenants before the tournament started was to come up with some way so that all teams of all skills could compete. We knew that breaking the teams into a higher skilled tier and lower skilled tier would not gather the critical mass. This followed the tenants of team abuse, there was only ONE team with members..hence there was only ONE tournament. Not a high skilled tourney with a few players that everyone would watch and a junior league nobody cared about. We wanted a common shared experience.

After tossing around ideas I stumbled upon a scheduling system where it seeded dynamically. It didn't answer all the questions, but it sparked an idea. After running it by citizen and sephy that it was a way to, in essence, eat our cake and have it too. I spent a week working out the kinks and running some tests.

Why go to such lengths? My previous experience with leagues always ran into problems of wasted games. Games that didn't count for anything. I didn't want that, I wanted a total system of incentives and rewords for even the most lopsided match. This is why the point system of 3 pts for a win, 1 for a loss and 0 for a forfeit. A team could still win by just not losing as bad...those few frags scored in a match could make all the difference. A team wasn't always playing against their opponent...they were playing against their peers in other lopsided matches.

Sundays became..maddening... On one hand it was interesting to see the results come in and EVERY result changed the matchups for next week. There were a lot of "what if" scenerios and I think it held interest for players and spectators to see that. The downside is it was me locked in a room for hours with sheets of paper constantly re-working the results. Late games on Monday were the worst for me as I would have to re-do the entire schedule.

Looking back, I think I would have tweaked it to separate out the very good from the very bad quicker. The convergence took a week or two longer then some of the lower skilled teams could wait.

Once we got past the first 4 weeks, there were a lot of good competitive games that we never would have seen with a traditional scheduling system. There was a lot of talking to newer teams to help them play and to stay thru the slog of blowouts.

I doubt we will ever see something like that again where the scheduling system is a dynamically adjusting low/mid/high tier all rolled into ONE tournament that everyone focuses on. One of my proudest achievements with abuse.

Random thought: Losing to Defiance on cpm21...ugh! Yeah..we were shocked. We didn't "lose"...as to imply we played badly..no we got beat. There are losses that stick with me (Quakecon, QIL 3/4)...but this is one of them. It was no secret that other teams could easily out aim us, so when Defiance came in and executed on both aim and team fronts we never could recover to save that match. GG

Random thought II: cpma netcode was great, to allow EU teams to play vs westies on east servers and everyone consider it equal was really something. EU teams were great (all teams were) considering the time differential and ping issues.

Thanks for all your hard work. I consider WANsanity the defining tournament of my gaming career (in no way a professional one... well excpet our team operation Survive... winning a Speakeasy server :)... I also signed up for Speakeasy DSL because of the low ping on the servers). I still talk with many of the people I met. What was really great is the whole community connected no matter their status. We were one big family.

I went on to run another CPM tournament, I think we were under the name First Frag with dz.uNity, due to there not being a Wansanity 2. We did 2v2 and used 1 map from each quake via CPM. If I learned anything it was that running a tournament isn't easy, neither is pleasing everyone.

There are lessons I leanred from playing in WANsanity and running my own tournaments that I strongly beleive made me the person I am. I wouldn't change a thing.

Yeah seeing two good teams play CPM tdm is great.

I'd like to see CPM18 (Powahaus) brought to QuakeLIVE.

Yeah, was the most fun (and only) team tourney I played in!

:) I've played in a few others but none ever came close to how fun WANsanity was.

It was probably because it was open and there were many newbie teams who came over from vq3. So you could play many games and win some, but you also could play one of the better teams and get a feel for how good they were. The servers were also full and you could find a scrim almost any time. Good times...

Can we get a time machine and go back to 2001-2003, when gaming was actually incredibly fun? :(

This and the KIT leagues were the best times I had in Q3 nothing has come close since. There was excellent coverage and the admins did a terrific job!

I think around this tournament could be considered one of the golden ages of Quake

Yeah, there hasn't been a TDM tournament as big (in NA) since WANsanity.

First game I ever played of cpm was first match of this tournament, was so bad but still probably the most fun tournament I've ever taken part in
