Not sure if you're looking for a serious answer, but companies do this to keep in touch with modern themes and attract new users, they must be in touch with modern designs and features or else they get replaced - or rather, an alternative might pop up with said features and users flock away to the competitor.

While it might be complicated for long term users who are used to certain layouts, these "improvements" usually make it easy for new comers to get into a certain website/client.

YouTube is known for being very sporadic with it's layout changes, apparently facebook does it to (never used it so I can't say for sure).

It's all done in order to keep your website/client fresh, easy to use, in a continuous development etc.



The most important thing one has to know is that no matter how many users voice their negative opinion and claim that they'll stop using their service, they oddly enough seem to stick around and bitch when another update comes about.

It has a lot to do with the vocal minority, and while you might be quite vocal right now and express your disdain for their new layout, there's thousands of users who are either enjoying it or simply don't mind it.


Do I think this is a good way to run a service? No, I think layout changes should be gradual and implemented if needed, but at the same time this mentality leaves you with ESR-like 1999 website that got BBcode buttons in 2015.


edit: I'm also using a bike related forum because I'm utterly clueless when it comes to bike maintenance and these guys are just overdoing it, we're talking two layout/functionality changes per week, you can't even get used to one thing and they already replace it with another. They're also adding so much stuff that eventually leaves the site very buggy. Just an hour ago I complained about the missing "recent posts" button and cried wolf and now here I am, patronizing you about the recent changes that affected you.

We in the same boat brotha, it's just that sometimes it's hard to believe that we, the people who disagree with the change, are the minority.

Oh and another thing to add - people generally dislike changes, they like they're cozy feeling and closeness of websites and knowing they're part of a clique. When you strip this away from them, it's no longer "their website". But eventually they (we?) stomach it up and continue using things, even if we are initially off put from the changes.

I understand the whole "keeping up with the times" thing, but this most recent outlook.com change really didn't give it a new look at all, it just made the previous design less coherent than before and detracted from it's functionality. I just couldn't comprehend how the guy in charge of the project said "yep, good job guys, love it, let's get this bad boy online!"

Its like Android 5, fucking bright white menus.

E-Mail? Just use thunderbird. it's miles better than most browser apps, reasonably easy to setup, ridicoulusly customizable with extensions, it won't change its whole interface every few months like web developers feel they have too (and if it does, you don't need to upgrade to the new version), plus you get to have your e-mail and attachments stored locally. And if you set it up to not delete mails from the server, you can still access your mails from the web interface if need be.

I've been loyal to thunderbird for years now, started using because I wanted to merge various emails in a single client. Using a black+tron blue theme and it's amazing.


Also, when I formatted my PC it crawled very old e-mails from my ex and it made me super depressed.

So that's a minus right there, fuck you thunderbird.

If companies are going to change things which is inevitable, it would be nice like with Reddit allowing you to revert back to the old style for simplicity.

Tbh I've come to realize that this type of thing just happens because front end designers need to justify their employment. You make the "perfect UI"... then what? Leave the company because you're work is done? Nawp.
