Are you serious? You realize that ELO, in its entirety, was implemented and supported solely by the community? It used ql stats to do the calculations, but now that ql stats are gone (because servers are now user-hosted, i.e. not centralized), it's not possible anymore unless someone comes up with a way to make servers communicate results of games to a central place, which might not be trivial (because you have to make sure no wrong or malicious results are reported). Maybe one could setup some blockchain kinda thing, similar to bitcoin, but instead of transactions, it keeps track of game stats. But that would probably be overkill.

It's also used to give you iots of extra info when you like at your match stats for recent games.
Some people have already been working on ways to use it, willl have to wait and see what happens.

It still does need the site host to decide on trusted servers though, and those to be set up with passwords to send the info in.

I can't redistribute the python file it mentions, but you don't even need a steam account to install steamcmd and download the dedicated server.

If you don't have people added as steam friends, then make use of the server filter tags, click change filters and type in tags by hand, or when you see tags on the right side of a server you can click them to add them to your filter.

click them within your filter list to remove them, factory I think gets put in by default, so you want to make sure you have at least "CA" in your filter list.

hopefully more people will start to put location in their tags rather than just leave it to ping, and some other common tags will start to come out 'proCA' or something.

it's far from wolfcam but if you start a demo from the replays menu you get a little on screen controller with automatic binds for navigating the playback too.

I never was much into whining about changes that have been made over the years. All I cared about was "Can I play the classic duel and use my prefered settings?" and the answer was always yes. Once again, most things with the new update don't bother me. But when I realized they took away r_subdivisions 80, I was sort of depressed. Yes, I can still play classic duel, but the distinct look of "my Quake" is gone...

I think it was for the best though, Q3 was never really designed with no curves in mind and it meant for tons of places where you could look through walls that kept getting submitted as map bugs that were unfixable.

At least you know everyone's in the same boat now too, if someone gets a rail through a curve edge it's timing / skill, not that they've hacked away a ton of geometry so can actually see you. That's not including actual hackers of course, geometry sadly wont stop them, but at least there is VAC now, I do hope they follow other companies and announce they've successfully banned X number of players in a ban wave., it would be nice to know it's working well.

The annoying thing is that the collision is still a coarse approximation of the curve, which means you now can get shot through the visible geometry. Can't say if subs 80did match collision, but I preferred. Anyways, bot a big deal.

A long time ago I used the mg bullet impact effect as a guide, and it looked like 80 closely matched the map collision. A quick test on thunderstruck last night with r_subdivisions 4 indicated that convex curves are too deep visually (shots go through the edge), and concave curves were a bit shallow (shots that should narrowly clear the edge are obstructed)

No need for any additional concept of account. Steam account are already there. Each account has its ID which doesn't change even if the name used on the account changes. That ID is easily available in QL and in the stats the server transfers.

Why DOES the game feel different? I noticed I can't rail like before. Whatever issue they fixed, I must have learned to adjust for, and now, without the issue there, I gotta re-learn. It's so hard to pin down. It's a "feel" kind of thing. I couldn't even begin to describe it. I haven't played enough games to see how it's affected my LG...because I haven't FOUND enough games for that.

Blue screen is not very descriptive... Normally people saying that either mean a windows BSOD or the ql blue console, either of those would normally have a lot of text on for diagnostic purposes

OK you have a hardware problem.

Irq not less than or equal is usually caused by faulty device drivers or faulty/failing hardware.
Sometimes you used to be able to get lucky just by rearranging the order of the PCI cards on the motherboard.

On very old PCs disabling acpi and manually forcing which irq each card used used to be a solution sometimes too but that was often because of picky creative labs cards.

Pain to track down the exact cause, sorry.

You're PC isn't 'just crashing' though, it's a known kernel fault, IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL as per my link earlier, that is a specifically a hardware/driver fault, just one which unfortunately can be caused by multiple items of hardware.

it's very difficult for software that isn't elevated to higher rings of OS security to be able to actually cause a BSOD even if trying to intentionally, that's the realm of driver faults.

If it was somehow miraculously QL there would be hundreds of posts about it already, and it would have been a massive QA fail before release after weeks or months of testing. And frankly it would have to be because it had accidentally revealed a major bug in a GPU or sound driver or something.

I'm sorry for your troubles, but something on your system needs some attention.

Places to start looking are -

Try running gputest as an OpenGL stress test
Try running 3dmark as a Direct3D stress test

Do you have everything from Windows Update installed.
Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card, sound card, network card.

Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard (**warning** I accept ZERO responsibility should you decide to undertake a BIOS update)
Is your PC full of dust and overheating? (don't clean it out with a vacuum cleaner you can static fry circuits, you need a can of compressed air)
Are all your fans working properly inside your PC case?
Are all your cards and memory seated properly on the motherboard.

I uninstalled quake for one main reason - the server browser is utter crap.

The ability for a player to spawn a dedicated server; having 1ms has reduced the odds of a "fair" game and I mention this because, sometimes I find it difficult to distinguish server information.

Okay my bad. The browser allows one click narrow results where the tags are. If you click ctf it will only show ctf servers, et cetera. Cleared up the filter and all the servers are back.

I think the text is amazing and voice chat adds more drama/fun regardless if it's welcomed. Let's face it, listening to someone squeel is good shit.

I'm very pleased with this update. VAC is finally here. This above all else is what truly mattered. I prefer this server browser because you can quickly filter and customize what you want. All populated modes are in your face by default and you can choose what is most interesting. For the first time in 10 years I played insta CTF last night and it was FUN. If someone tried to host that a year ago I highly doubt the server would be populated and if it were it wouldn't last more than a few maps. I feel like voice chat will bring the community a little closer together because having names with voices makes the experience more human and comfortable. Anyone experienced with this already knew there would be spammers and annoying assholes but they are easily muted. Without tiers or ELO shuffle is completely useless but since there was so much aliasing and cheating before CA hasn't changed at all. If anything it's much better now. At least now tryhards have a reason to relax. There are so many noobs and random shit going on you never know what's going to happen. Anyway once gibs are available this will be more true to Q3A. I'll be happy to see a few 100 damage rail servers. I really think Quake for the first time in a long time is on the right track again.

After few hours of talking and setting shit up i cna spawn server, unfortunatly i have only 1mbps upload so noone can play on it since it warps for everyone.

If I want to start the server on internet from my machine (I have 100/30mbit connection) for 4v4 matches, is my connection sufficient for this or I need more ?
I can pay 2€ more for 200/60 but I don't need it atm, if current speed is enough ok, if not maybe I would try for a month with higher speed :)

hosting a dedicated server can be a pain, but just spawning a server from the ingme menu is as easy as before. Only thing is that when you leave bye bye server even if people is still playing.
The only thing is that you have to forward 27960 UDP port to your pc in your router's port fowarding configuration.

I've actually done that, and even if I started an "Online" server I had lan ping and could add bots, so I was assuming it didn't work out.

yeah when you spawn your own server yo can pretty much do whatever u want... it is hosted in your own computer (so 1 ping, enjoy :) ).
But make sure you forward the port in your router, because if you dont do that people wont be able to connect to it.

99% of ppl on my friendlist are either causal acquitances that decided to friend me and our interaction ended on that, or oldschool people who dont play QL anymore because they got pissed at it and left.

About likes and dislikes...

Man, we can go round the block with this for ages. This game was so broken that right now its hard to say what do we like and dont - IMHO. It's all too fresh. The QL feels different, sensitivity is different. IMHO netcode is fucked up a bit - I play with ping 20 for example and get delays and thru rails like its 200 ping...all the while my lagometer shows clear and I get steady 250FPS. Also, the new match finding tool is different and took quite a lot of fiddiling about to get it sorted out.

So yeah it is completely different for me. I wander ingame and feel like Im in totally different game than before. I know it will subside after a while but the feeling of oddity is there...especially since I played all my Steam QL matches so far while being extremely drunk. So drunk that I was afraid that my desk lamp might attack me.

Anyway, for me its hard to tell. Interface is good enough, that main page Ranger drawing is corny imho (He looks more like COD ranger than THE RANGER from Quake, probably not to scare kids). Netcode its quirky at least for me, the games have a weird feeling (you play against lots of weird aliases lololo - you feel totally alien now).

Quake had that little thing called having a nick. Many ppl clung to theirs and made names for themselves under these nicks. I know lots of ppl played olde Quakes under different nicks (me included) but still...when I played with Syrumz I knew I would hear that we need to DEF, you could bet on Ardor to get flag, jrender could do whatever he was doing while he was not stacking (no offense, its a joke ;) ), Danstar could argue about everyone being cheaters and perform intellectual conversations while carrying Quad, Voda aka Anatel aka GonGozzler could complain about everyone being NOOBS and go to spec while losing because THIS TEAM IS STUPID (again no offense :) ) , Xtina aka Lambretta could say GIRL POWER while trying to camp in the middle or inbase for the hell of it, Tudermaci would call losing team CA LAMAS and LEARN TO PLAY, etc etc. And Blazkovitch aka recke could tell everyone that CTF without dmg is no CTF and decide he's fed up with NOOBS who havent been to QUAKECON and quit :D
In short, game had personalities just like in Q2 or Q3 where you knew you meet that dude on that server and he would be a source of fun or you knew what to expect from whom.

Right now I get a feeling that I play - to quote that fool Ra1den - "noname NAAAAPS", people who hide under aliases. Its both good and bad, since slumming is pointless and since all that matters are ppl from your Steam friend list. But it's much more murky, I know some people like that and are happy with it, I cant get used to that. Mixed bag, I'm telling you.

Dont know about other players, but I'll be able to say something about QL definitely after we get all DLCs available, all bugfixes are implemented (if any) and some time has passed.

directly comparing steam to the likes yahoo search and other cancerous shit is a bit strong but i feel your pain mate. ive been a steam suer for the last 5-6 years and cant really complain about it. had some performance issues back then until like 2012 when i finally ditched my old ddr2 rig. i had to close all open steam windows like library friendlist etc to be able to run cs:s with stable 100fps but all of this was gone after getting some ddr3 a cheaper i5 and a gtx460.

Unlike those programs, Steam handles a lot of stuff for QL. Friends, masterserver, voicechat, achievements, lobbies, workshop item sharing, app updates...

If so, I wonder what g_itemHeight is set to on the servers he plays on.

If he means items, that's how it used to be, it was one of the little changes added to the loadout game no one seemed to mention while they were busy having seizures over loadouts, item timers and autohop.

So if you can jump over them now, it's probably just how it used to be for years.

OK I checked with a local server, and it was ok, so those servers had some weirdo setup (strange because iirc one was omega's ctf, which used to have "normal" settings)

The omega servers have been running for months with default QL CTF settings, so they had unified ammo and item timers on, so jumping over items would also have been impossible.

Then it were some others. This one had no timers, but T4 QL players were on them and we all agreed that jumping over is easier.

I mean I was playing some games on two servers yesterday and I jumped over everything on both, shards, armors, weapons, etc... perhaps two servers were set up in the same way.. idk.

I also hit a lot less on my first games and I agree that it's somehow different, but I can't really tell how much is it placebo and how much is the new steam version, Sens was definitely and completely off compared to the standalone version, (and I really don't care about the "I know everything" guys telling me that I imagine things, it was off, period.

Perhaps it just runs faster/smoother now and that tricks us:)

You can already with the default ummodded game :), hit escape go to admin menu, view profile is there.
You have to have steam overlay enabled though.

In steam options re bind overlay to something you can't hit accidentally in game ever is highly reccomended.

Steam -> right click Quake Live and choose Properties -> UPDATES tab - untick 'Enable steam cloud...'

That way it won't download anything when you delete your cfgs.

moving out or renaming repconfig.cfg qzconfig.cfg and autoexec.cfg will then fully set you to the default config.

To be honest, as a regular player that doesn't go very deep into this, I almost don't see any disadvantages other than some biases and preferences.

Netcode feels loads better? much more LAN like with the same ping as the previous QL. Seem to have a drop in FPS when things get damanding which wasn't present in the old QL. So far, I like it.

That would be the reason why. It starts from the default then it executes your config. If your config doesn't have any mention of MWHEELDOWN and MWHEELUP, it will keep the default values instead of overwriting it. I always keep those in my config :

Q3A is 19.99EUR, which is a 16 year old game. 9.99EUR for an updated version (weather it's better or worse, it's updated) doesn't seem that bad.

I am starting playing again, even though I have no time, but the changes are so awesome for me, that it would be a crime if I don't manage to find time to play.

the only minus is the 10 euro, because I have a friend that hates paying for quake. Actually, even that could be a plus, since that will keep him away from the game for 1-2 weeks that I need to get my form back, then I will buy it for him and safely kick his ass (hopefully he doesn't read this).

That's always been a problem with lagged players in quake.
The fixed up timenudge a LOT in QuakeLive for it about 2 years back, but if you're using timenudge it will still highlight the connection problems of other players a lot more than if your timenudge is 0.

in cases of unstable wifi/wired connections with severe packet loss theres nothing you can do ingame but trying to convince them to upgrade their internet.

If you were using timenudge, then setting it to 0 instead would reduce the problem a bit if it's caused by them lagging and not some issue at your end.

So a little feedback: Changing it to 0 felt more sluggish (duh, obviously), so I tried -20 and might stick with it. Totally crisp and choppy>less choppy, but sluggish. Gonna get used to it I guess.

Only thing that is weird to me is that this started with the update. I have a slightly better ping all around but suddenly it's choppy and enemies stutter. Before the update it was mostly smooth despite a slightly higher ping.

check the basic things like com_idleSleep is 0

And test the default hud if you use a custom one, i've had accidental misitakes in huds cause severe FPS problems before when I was working on fixing up mine.

Update: Went online today since it bugged me and yes, it was com_idleSleep. I did not have this in my current cfg and thus it was 1.

At start, I found removing rank systems interesting but now I realize it's stupid.

We need some kind of skill sorting on servers.
The players skill vary too much which really affects the game experience. It could be fine in FFA, but when it comes to CTF, duel, TDM and even CA it's catastrophic

idk, bitches have been crying "we had no tiers in Q3" for years, and now that we don't have tiers anymore, bitches be all "we need tiers".

thats because you didn't play vanilla q3 during that era, thats where all the noobs were stuck.

if you played OSP or some other mod you entered a community with a whole nother skill level.

this tbh. people are complaining about the tier system being gone but really mean the ELO system which wasn't provided by id anyway.

The tier system was also fucking crap, at least like from my way-worse-than-average-player perspective. It felt like everybody above 1500 ELO was in the highest (4th?) tier, everybode above 1200 was in the second highest tier, and well, there weren't really any players below that. As a 1250-on-good-days-player, playing a guy in my tier (second highest) usually resulted in me losing a few games and maybe winning one or two (because nobody just plays one map and then leaves), which meant I usually dropped at least one tier, which meant that all remaining servers were labeled "extremely difficult" (even in the second highest tier).
Without the community-provided ELO system, I would then have to choose from a list of servers containing players with an ELO between 1200 and 2500 (or whatever the current max is), with no indication where on the range the people in those servers were.

I get gray screen when I try to launch QL and it won't load further. I've tried re-installing game a couplke of times and it makes no change. Have anyone else encountered this?

It's quite odd. After all the whine of the peple that you have to pay 10 EUR, I was expecting having to pay. But I already went to steam a while back and also was premium member. So no, I did nothave to pay.

So far I would say that the performance of QL has not worsend. I have a pretty old laptop, but it still runs smooth.

Having no rating is lame. Finding duel servers is easy though.

I only want ranking for duel and maybe stats list.

No. If you already had Quake Live in your Steam account, you don't need to buy it again. It may not appear in your library because it was F2P and it's not installed, but you can install it from the store page without paying anything.

Dont know if the lg was changed but it certainly does feel different for me. I now get much more of that warm satisfying feeling when you completely unload your shaft onto an enemy.

what i dislike:

unlag doesn't seem to properly work at even ~60ms now.
not to talk about something like 80ms, which is totally unplayable now.

maybe it were just the shit servers i discovered this on, but it breaks the game completly at those pings = can't hit at all with those pings(especially LG, which you can't rely on at all anymore when you hit at least -10% in close range).

maybe this is Weird's wettest dream come true, but then he should "enjoy" those medium high pings.
