LOL? Voice chat? And we thought loadouts made it Call of Quake. This shit is annoying as fuck and I disabled it on the 2nd day. At least with COD they limit the duration of voice chats, in QL people can just play annoying sounds/music on loop for an entire 15 minute game. Listening to idiots say stupid shit makes the game feel even more like idiocracy than it already did.

All you need to do is mute specific players when they cause a problem. So far I've only muted one person in CA. Voice chat has its conveniences and inconveniences like anything else.

I didn't know there was a voice chat because nobody was using it, so I tried it out and said "sup faggots" and then everyone was suddenly freaking out with it LOL

Played some real defrag on real defrag maps last week and after that some midair and amphi (on fucking Quake Live). I'd argue QL is less dead than it was before. It now feels like an actual client and not the sheep herder that it had always been.

Stats and friends gone & no linux support is a bummer, but we'll get over it like how we got over the subscription model which was a dozen times worse shit that could happen to the game.

Sadly this game already died one year ago when the game first released on steam and failed miserably, when the population plummeted from an average of 2,350 in September 2014 to 498 in December 2014, which is a 79% decrease in only 3 months.

Fast forward to now, when despite them giving the game for free to 2.6 million steam accounts, the population numbers are significantly lower than when the game first launched on steam in September 2014, with a max peak of 1607 in the past week compared to a peak of 6,154 in September 2014.

This is pathetic. There is no other way to describe it.

Only 72,000 unique steam users have played the game in the past 2 weeks, or 2.8% of the total # of owners. With such a low percentage of active users, it's just nearly impossible that you'll ever see any significant gains in the population of this game ever again.

In fact, any recent spike was likely due to just the interest in the new update and population levels will start decreasing again as there will be no more updates.

Well see back in 2009 I left quake to get married, have a family and start my real life career. Quake to me has always been a hobby not my life. I played the update it feels good. Had this been 2-3 years ago then the game likely would be kick started again. Unfortunately all the bad memories from playing QL still kinda lives and makes me never to want to touch the game again. Instead I am now catching up on fantastic games I've missed out on started with the witcher series.

Well it's hard to keep players when the community greets them with CAPS LOCK, profanity and kick votes. If I joined a basketball game and they treated me like subhuman filth because I missed a 3 pointer or didn't pass the ball I wouldn't come back. No one wants to play with douchebags. I was hoping to get back into CA with this update, but that seems unlikely now. 3v3 or 4v4 T5 CA with balanced teams was the only decent experience in clan arena. 8v8 or 16v16 isn't even a game -- it's just a T0 warp/spamfest. Coming from the guy who rightly chided the 16/16 sg loadout shitshow, I'm surprised you'd be singing the praises of 16v16T2lolCAclusterfuck. Is noob farming really worth the loss of matchmaking?

8 man loadout FFA is way worse than 16 vs. 16 CA. It adds a new dimension to large and huge maps. Smaller matches still exist but you'll have to arrange teams manually. It's not as if ELO protected matches from being shit anyway. Aliasing ruined at least 1/2 the matches guaranteed. Is aliasing and cheating worth the ELO shuffle? Hell no.

I don't think there was much wrong with 8 man loadout ffa. I mean maybe it wasn't great, but it was hardly awful. The problem was that every loadout server was usually 16 players with half of them holding +attack +moveup +forward with rocket launcher all game long. The incessant sg spamming wasn't all that effective in 8 man loadout either. Anyway I tried the 12v12 and 16v16 ca thing the other day, and it was really awful.

I guess it depends on what you value in a game. Any number in players loadout actually broke FFA. When it comes to CA the more the merrier. Why? CA isn't a real mode in the first place. It's essentially TDM's handicapped brother. A parody of a real mode that is now taken seriously by aim junkies. When the mod came about 3v3 wasn't even in mind. If you hate what CA is now then you hate it for what it truly is. What you prefer is "pro CA" which slightly less respectable than 1v1 TS LG only, the submode we aren't sure why exists. Neither will ever be as good as CTF/TDM because they aren't exciting to watch and lack substance.

These things are obviously highly subjective. I actually found loadout ffa to be more fun, even though I perform the same in classic as I do with loadouts. Classic can be fun too, and less aggravating in a number of ways, but I've generally had enough after 2 or 3 games. I always hated 16 player loadout ffa, but I find 20 player classic to be equally undesirable, just for completely different reasons. I was fine with 8-10 players in either variation of ffa.

CA being an elimination and round-based mode makes it quite different than TDM, regardless of spawning with weapons. Maybe it's not "real quake", but if it isn't, then that means quake truly is dead. CA is by far the most popular mode, and if it didn't exist, there'd be hardly anyone playing QL. No one in NA plays tdm or ctf. Without CA, quake would be like cpm/reflex -- a game with 20 regular players.

A lot of people don't realize ffa saw a 50 to 100 percent increase in players after loadouts. Now that things are back to 'normal', the player base has fallen off. The surprise $10 fee hasn't helped either. The loadout mode could have been improved imo, by hard limiting players to 12, reducing sg and rocket starting ammo to 3 or 4, getting rid of universal ammo, and probably other things. Oh well, too late now. They dun goofed listening to the veteran community on loadouts, while simultaneously letting noobs run servers with 24 or 32 players. Worst of both worlds.

Q3's CA was played with cpm physics and instant switch and was pretty much 3 times faster, which made good CA players at least somewhat fun to watch.
CA in Ql is as broken as the rest of the game, just terribly terrible.

Cpma was first introduced around 2000 or 2001 and even OSP had a votable promode option.

I think QL is in a good state since the latest steam version. Sure it's a niche game and the professional scene is dead but there's still a lot of people playing just for fun. As long as there's people playing on servers with good ping, I really don't mind QL being a niche for people who like this type of game.

In the old days Quake was all about having fun, even at the highest level of competition. If you're only playing Quake to earn money then sure it's not looking good but otherwise what's there to complain about really?
