Of course you can, you just need higher polygon count, higher texture resolutions, and some fancy tweaks and post-processing like valve did to q1 engine for HL, but most importantly, coherent texture themes... some of these maps added to QL in recent years look so fucking atrocious and random they don't even deserve to be rendered in the Glorious Engine of God that is idtech3.

It's a fantastic idea! Then we can debate on every little thing about how it's different from Q3A.

this game needs to be great in tdm, ctf, and duel. q3/ql is only good for duel.
q3 is too slow to bring in a large number of new players(TTK time to kill is too slow) and ql is there if you like that style of gaming.
q4 would be a better choice to build from.

if this arena fps is great in all aspects, i'm sure it could steal a chunk of disgruntled csers(20k? 50k?) away. I've already heard from lots of csers who are upset that valve keeps dumbing their game down with each patch, those people would be prime targets to steal away.

The sort of people who would pass over quake because of a lack of weapon skins would never appreciate the game anyway.

you all cry about the same thing with quake 4 and q4max, and i say its all recoded in Q43A

so then you setup your server with custom player speed, strafe/dodge scale and you can make Q43A feel more like cpma etc

by default its just quake 4 with physics and netcode that work

If you really want it to happen, then its best if you download the idtech 4 source and start working on a prototype.

Everyone can talk big, but if you can show a basic demo of the game then people will be much more inclined to participate in the project.

"Planting first seeds" (more like writing one post) doesn't cut it. What does is working to achieve the goal, or at least funding it. So, contribute to one of the dozens of existing projects. For example if you like Reflex then give them money (not $10), but until then it's all talk.

The alternative is funding the "SF III" we already have, which is QL. After all that game got international tournaments for 15 years; more so than SF III. The way of doing so is funding tournaments, streamers and so on, like lots of us have. Therefore, once again it comes down to voting with your wallet instead of just complaining.

sf3 just had a tournament consisting of 325 participants. last time quake had something like that was during the q3 era.

8 years later and people can't even make a QL web lobby or matchmaking system but instead use IRC pickup bots, which are STILL buggy. lol. Good luck designing and programming a complex 3D shooter.

I'm working on something which might interest people who are wanting the essence of Quake (particularly the video you linked in terms of quick / flowing movement) but with a new twist to make it interesting and not just another Quake clone.

There's a few videos and explanations on the site and the youtube channel which show how the approach is widely different from any existing arena shooters, but still follows a lot of principles required for a competitive arena game, that can also appeal to casual players via different game types (less intense than the 1v1 mode).


One thing NOT covered in any videos yet is that I will be aiming for full visual customisation. So please don't look at this and think "I wouldn't play that, you can't see enemies or understand the terrain" etc. If you want no textures, white walls, fullbright models, zero lens flare / post effects, then that will be an option. Also it's using a highly scalable engine which can run on phones / tablets, so most people will be able to achieve full FPS (albeit with low quality settings).

Happy to answer any questions about this, or to hear criticisms, because I am trying to appeal to gamers of various backgrounds without splitting the community but rather combining them. My goal is to attract players to the game via the unique gameconcept as well as the unique intuitive movement system. You can treat it as an entirely new game which shares the critical parts of Quake, rather than an attempt to duplicate.

This is more then a good base to start the nextGENquake. This is awesome.

You should make it an ESR game, but be warned DO NOT listen every opinion you hear.

I've been following your work since you posted about CHAMS on ESR a while ago. I'm looking forward to playing it when you come out with an alpha. Keep up the good work!

I like how you've managed to take quake 3 concepts and use them in your game without creating a different shade of gray, unlike a lot of other games. If you can deliver what you've been talking about in your emails then it should be a success.

- idtech4 (with openAL/ 3d positional audio and CPU multicore usage)
- VQL physics (minus autohop)
- fix rocketsplash on stairs and the likes
- QL netcode fixed, so that weird has no issues with it anymore :D

basically QL as it is with a better engine(even tho i doubt that any other modern engine could be this smooth again)

Considering the neg accel in idtech4 when you run the game at 125fps, and the fact that the fps is tied to the tick rate isn't so cool.

- Logo needs to be SICK AS FUCK and also have a double meaning, like that picture of an old ugly bitch that could be a hot fuckable girl. deceptive shit.

-Needs humans VS something else. The humans would play like cs style, weapons and movement and shit. The something else would have quake inspired weapons and movement.

something else might be monsters/aliens/demons/robots/niggas from the future/huge cockroaches/wild beasts from lore

-modes should be deathmatch / attack and defend / swarm

- should have a single player mode. 1) humans vs the something else where you play as a human in a squad trying to take down these monsters. 2) or play as the monster trying to destroy the world.

- weapons should be ultra satisfying for both sidesw

-weapon skins/hats/costumes/trucknuts/spray paint / fucking batman type skylight signs etc
