Im never going to understand why Quakers are getting so pissy about new games coming out. They dont affect QL/Q3 a bit.

If Csgo,LoL or Dota2 wudn't have come out, Quake would still be dead to this day. Why are people so fangay'ish about Quake and constantly look for the reason why Quake is dead in other games?

Quake's pretty much solved tho, at least in it's current format. These people have been playing quake for 10-15 years and there isn't much new the game-play offers anymore. If anything, Quake should adapt things from OW/MOBAs (talking about skills, special items that work like ultis) into it's own game-play to add some variety and freshness, and then maybe you'll get their attention for which you are so desperately crying after.

And I get this vibe from the post that a 1200 ELO noob wants other people to entertain him instead of actually learning the game himself.

Didn't sinkerror remove the team arena runes, kamikaze and prox mines? They helped make pub CTF the most enjoyable thing to play back in early QL. God QL was so good back then.

Well, I don't know shit about duel but promoting ql tdm as an example for something well-designed is so naive. I mean if anything, it's probably the shittiest tdm ruleset Quake has ever had. Strong spawning weapon, paper armors, almost evenly-tiered weapons to name only a few. Those rules might work well in duel but definitely not in tdm. Hell, even QWish tdm is superior despite its ancient age.

Quake Live is given WAY more credit than it deserves, especially when it comes to the "thinking" part.

Where did I claim QL TDM is something well designed? All I did was take some aspects from TDM that work (better than duel at least) and could work in duel and apply them in duel scenarios.

It's cool, these things can co-exist. People choose what to do with their time and hell, look at Q1. You can still get games today. As it stands with the new QL release, now as long as there are community servers, it will survive (and hopefully thrive) for those left.

In the meantime, maybe try some positivity. Make the Quake community a place people (both new and old) want to involve themselves in and they'll stick around, even if it's the odd game here and there. Quake remains unique enough that there really is nothing else to scratch the itch :]

Or it could be just a simple thing like client-side hit detection, commonly mistaken in arena shooters as "fucked up hitboxes", which is less noticeable when half of the weapons are visually trail-wise quite minimalistic or just plain hitscans.

Mixed US/EU games have been very much playable in Nexuiz/Xonotic since at least 2005 and some more recognizable games like TF2 recently as well.

EU-USA can not be playble until we have reasonable ping which will not happen anywhere near in the future, period.

1.- Have you played the game? While I haven't, I can say that it looks really fun to play and the gameplay seems refreshing in an stagnant sub-genre.

2.- You really overestimate how good QL is. As a game it's rather lousy (we all know that), and even for the specific aspect that is competitive gameplay still QL is not that great either, since aim (or rather the "micro" aspect of the game) matters way too much in comparison with previous Quake games. What I mean is the Quake you once adored is dead, because "pros" don't play with the same styles as before (now it's rush rush rush) and those "pros" are already getting very much bored of QL, so they are moving on to other games. We've been seeing this way before the Overwatch closed beta.

3.- I don't think you are aware that most likely QL won't be the official game of Quakecon 2016, which was the only event of the year. That means for people that play either for money, pride or for the fun had while competing in person (like it should be), Q3/QL officially died in 2015 (well finally). So, considering the competition in FPS games right now is only in CSGO, which doesn't suit the "pros" you are referring to, then the sole alternative for these guys is hoping Overwatch becomes something big enough to have major LANs.

Q3/QL will die when I can't play because I can't find a single player. Until then it's very alive. Fuck tournaments and fuck their inane games.

i think you hit the nail on the head. the willingness to practice nonstop is going to be most important. overwatch doesnt strike me as a game you can play 24/7 which is kind of required to compete at the highest level. watching fazz play that junkrat character he was spamming grenades 90% of the time, theres no way most people will have the patience to do that im guessing. still, they have their experience and solid aim to jumpstart their overwatch 'career' :P

It's not just practice. Quake players over-estimate how far their Quake aim will take them. There are tonnes of top level TF2/CSGO players that will absolutely destroy Quake players in terms of aim.

BTW. I remember when my age bracket grew up in 90s we played Quake passionately until we discovered things like girls, alcohol, and cigarettes. Playing Quake was just pastime.

These very same guys collapsed from fear when confronted with school PT, couldn't lift more than 1kg and when confronted by a girl they turned red and tried unsuccesfully to find any compatible ports on her. Then they spewed stories online how they scored tons of chicks (yeah they did, if we call JPG image of a woman a "chick") . Basically they tried to balance their deficiencies in Quake.

Of course many of Quakers werent like that, but on the other hand quite a lot were total and utter nerds and dorks. Point is, nothing changed.

Why?

When esports arrived in early 00s all nerds around the world found a way to feel important. Somebody recognized them! Yay! When called out as dorks they could say: "Ima training to support Fatal on next Qcon, biatch" and make serious faces. Since most of normal people didnt know wtf was that the nerds got back some of their dignity as no one wanted to argue with them. But they were still fainting before PT class.
Anyway, the world moved on. esports grew up, so did the nerds. Many of them un-nerded themselves and became sane people, some of them nerded themselves even more. That second group was composed of people who desperately tried to find an explanation for how they were still failing in real life despite being older. These guys apaprently forgot that life is "no nintendo game" - to quote Eminem. So they pushed deeper and deeper and they still infest online games, this time as heavily mutated, brain-damaged Basement Dwellers. On the other hand wenow have the new, young nerds who are even more handicapped in real life but would kiss Cooller's or Strenx's toes because they're their idols and gods and whatnot. It is a funny read sometimes, actually.

These people still prophesize weird things and still view esports as something they're not. And they will tell you that everything sucks but they will still play it, just because. They will tell you that this game sucks, that game sucks, that everything sucks....and you will find them in these games online. Sometimes it seems its a marathon in who will say more "suck". Regarding multiplayer, before quake I used to play a lot of Tribes:Ascend (I think I started playing shooters after my year in the army, ~2011-2012) which was and still is pretty fun in pubs and pugs. I had played a bit of Tribes 2 roughly 6 or 8 years before (game was already dead back then iirc) and even though I had no clue what I was doing (being like 12-14 years old), I had fun. Looking back at the last 10 years or so, I also played quite a bit of soldat.pl, and I had a UT 2k3 demo where I enjoyed FFA against bots with the 0.001 gravity modifier. These days, cpma is about the only mp game I play. Played and still play no cs (or cod/bf and what they're all called), apart from firing it up semi-regularly, playing for 20 minutes and not seeing the appeal.

Single player wise, I was a console kid for quite a while (= until mid of ps2 era) and we had the first two playstations in our home. FFVII, FFIX, Mortal kombat 4, tons of matt hoffman pro bmx, future cop, and more. good times.

I used to play Super Mario Bros. on the NES back in the day.

Your misconception of auto-aim in relation to consoles is incorrect. All that console "auto-aim" is, is when you move the crosshair over a character in game it slows down ever so slightly. You still need some serious skill to control the joysticks to a certain degree.

I think that would actually be great. Not as good as Quake, of course ;) Imagine a LoL / Dota style game but first person. You lock on an enemy once and as long as you look their way and stay in range, you will auto attack them. Plus you have free aim skillshots (some aoe) with cooldowns. Add neutral objectives like towers and a huge boss both teams can fight over.

From what I have seen of the game, it looks like a fun time-waster FPS just like Team Fortress 2 was/is. I wouldn't say it is competitive material just Team Fortress 2 isn't in my book.

Maybe those ex Quakers and TF2 players got paid by Blizzard to promote the game or whatever, at least they got their beta keys to promote it, it's a given that the first couple of waves of the "random beta key distribution" most keys went exactly to streamers, youtubers and know FPS players, just to promote the game.

All in all it looks like a fun game to play, nothing awesome tho.

To me it looks like OW will be better than Doom. Its a set amount of players per team 6v6. It's a pure team game so it's social, blizzard are proving themselves to be awesomely supportive devs. They've released a 20 minute video where they explain the netcode ffs.

There will be lots of different things to learn with each hero having their own abilities and already 21 heroes to choose from. This is really 2016 meta game. Controlling spawns is really important as is aim and prediction and teanwork/communication above all.

Doom is slow, but it might be a bit more fun when they do the open beta. Hopefully 120/144fps is unlocked and we can actually set key bindings without breaking everything. It's not horrific like Quake 4 was on release but I can't see it replacing Quake any time soon. It'll have that snap map and stuff though so maybe it has potential. Too early to tell I think, seen much more from overwatch so far which actually requires less of a beast PC too and to be honest looks much more polished.

They should both be fun anyway.

Maybe it's sad that one of the greatest quake talents of all time won't be focusing on the game where we all grew to know and respect his skills, but I'm also happy for him that he is sponsored to do what he loves which is play games. And there are lots of things he could be sponsored to play that are worse than Overwatch, imo. :p

I do, none of them really like any of those games. Cooller likes to fuck around in the stream with CSGO and that's about it, they wouldn't care to play it a lot of hours unless there was big money involved.

Quake's dead because it hasn't really evolved since it was created. Best thing Q3 added to it was the lean that players get from accelerated movement. Cg_playerangles, I think the function is called? There should have been at least 1 technical artist dedicated to doing shit like that to make Quake a game that had extra mileage. Otherwise, the only people that can differentiate between the quakes are pretty much diehard fans.

I'd like to see that kind of gameplay come back, but it's going to need to evolve. Until then, it's pretty much Insurgency Push or VIP for me.

Quake's dead because Q3A was removed from major tournaments in favor for Q4 (which never took off) and later because of the MOBA rise (which drew players away from FPS in general and Quake in particular). Community had enough talent, technical and artistic, to maintain and evolve the game in whatever direction they wanted.

Not even Reflex has the player models leaning, so if you are expecting any of the new games to do awesome stuff like that you are delusional.
Quake 3 was the last good competitive FPS game that was "mainstream" for a while.

There's nothing to evolve from the core gameplay, Q3 was the perfect compromise between hardcore but not insanely fast like QW or CPMA. Strafejumping was the sweet spot. Q3 also had objectively perfect deathmatch arena aesthetics. Models, maps, textures, sound, fucking nailed everything. What a game.

Then MOBA's took off, which are incidentally a de-evolution from strategy based games like Starcraft, which where too much to take over the non asian world. They had to make a game that was slow enough so you could watch the twitch chat as you die and walk again to the place where the boring farming is happening.
Notice how in Starcraft or Quake there's no possible rest allowed (unless you want to delay every respawn which would hinder your game)

Overwatch looks like a coloring picture book for autist kids and there's more flash than during Pikachu's first bath to make up for the awful and boring gameplay.

Overwatch is just not an arena shooter, and cannot be compared with Quake.
I've seen dahang and other pro's playing it. And personally, i think it's sad to see them playing this game. But you can't blame them, as professional gamers, they also need to eat and pay the bills.

At this moment they don't have a better alternative. For CS:GO to compete it's maybe to hard (to late) and Overwatch is just here at the right time. Created and promoted by a company with lots of money. This is the best opportunity they have. Maybe Bethesda wil announce a new Quake this year and things will change but this is only speculating.

Pro's cant make a living with playing Quake, so they focus on a game that can. And for me as a casual Quaker i feel sorry for them. They are 'forced' to play such a shitty kiddy game. But again, there's no alternative now. And i've really tried to give Overwatch a objective chance but it's just not cool at all.

Why is it sad that they play the game? It's fun and being very actively worked on. And knowing Blizzard, it will get tweaks and more content along the road. They even managed to fix D3, which was a COMPLETE disaster on launch, I was so hyped then got disappointed quickly. But now it's REALLY good and quite competitive, especially with the new bot detection system which filtered out literally thousands of accounts from the leaderboards.
