It's still in alpha, so the hitboxes and animations obviously are likely to improve, but the clunkiness actually "looks like" it's an inherent part of the game based on this trailer. Then again, you also have to take into consideration that the same guys playing QL would also make it look clunky I guess.

For me, the gameplay trailer didn't even bring any new info that I didn't already get or extrapolate from doom, the cinematic trailer and tim donuts interviews.

Bottom line is: we are still in the dark about how the gameplay feels :s

Don't you see how that small clip is inserted in the video in purpose to hype old school players, but all that will be is a 30 second powerup/speed for a special class of champion while the rest are stuck with the dogshit standard speed we've seen?

Get real, the actual ENGINE is fucked, it suffers from the same blocky, clunky feel that Q4 suffered, not to mention the aesthetics are boring af to boot and you will not even be able to properly set up to make it look clear. I predict not even bright models will be allowed.

Okey, here is my comments on this gameplay trailer :

The Positive Side :

- Quake : It is a new Quake game, why would i be mad at that ? we been waiting for a new Quake game for years, it is extremly exciting for every Quake and arena FPS fan.

- The atmosphere of the game : It looks like Quake, kind of, with its gory / weird / gothic / brutal atmosphere and the maps look like they belong to a Quake or Doom game.

- Gibs : cause gibs are fun and makes you feel the frag a little more, and that's a huge part of Quake ( and you can see that some characters got red blood and others got blue-ish blood, which is a good touch )

-Fast : well, it is kinda fast, not THAT fast but it is fast, did i say fast too much ? .... but in a serious note, the speed of the game depends on whose playing and i guess those who played in this trailer are not that good at it.

- Announcer : Finally someone who sounds manly, like the q3 one.

- Graphics : Finally, a new Quake game with nice graphics and look current gen ( maybe future gen too )

- Slow Rockets : as a Quake 2 player, i love slow rockets, but this is just a personal preference

The Negative Side :

- Weapons : They look weird, i mean, sure the graphics are good but they sure look weird, they dont look brutal or like any weapons that we used in the previous Quake games, especially the Railgun.

-Fast ? : is it ?

- Unreal Tournament : Well honestly, it kinda looks like Unreal Tournament, graphic wise and slow-ish wise, i like UT but this is Quake, maybe its just me, who knows.

But overall, we cant really judge from a mere Trailer or Gameplay Trailer, we need to see real footage of a pro-player playing seriously, i think the game has potential and it is backed-up by Bethesda, which means that the game is gonna be huge for a while and we will have alot of tournaments and leagues and huge money prizes ( DreamHack, ESWC, IEM, CPL kinda tourneys with qualifications and grand finals etc... )

So i think we all should give it a chance before judging, i myself was not optimistic, now am a little less optimistic but who knows, maybe it is gonna be fun, maybe it will suck, they might announce a release date and Beta testing at the end of this year's Qcon, all we got to do now is wait.

For the speed - fov 90, most likely gamepad and lastly they would not want to scare of the console crowd with too fast gameplay(I am sure for them this was fast as hell).

Tim Donuts said specifically that QC will be PC exclusive. I agree, though, that the low speed is for not scaring the unexperienced players, new to fps-arena genre.

And didn't he decide to keep it despite his opinion after discussing it with others? Even he understood what he thinks might not always be right. Unfortunately with Tim/Adam and co that's not the case. They think they're absolutely positive they know what Quake needs and they won't let anyone tell them differently. All one has to do is look at the shit they put into Quake Live in a desperate attempt at attracting more people.

It seems crazy to me that they couldn't exhibit more of the fast movement and hardcore arena FPS features when that's the crowd they are trying to market to (at least based on the E3 teaser). If they knowingly put features into the game because they know hardcore players want it (strafe-jumping, for example), then that should be the highlight of these game play trailers. Otherwise, it just becomes speculation about how bad it's going to be cause they barely show any of the stuff they claimed to be offering.

I don't think they are aiming for the super-hardcore Esr-like Quake crowd. Sure, they want depth, but they don't need to go out of their way to showcase it all when what they show is already plenty enough for a normal player. We're probably gonna see more later.

If the game has a high visibility mode for competitive play, it looks good. Otherwise, it's too visually cluttered. Competitive play aside, I think the lovecraftian monsters in the maps looks cool as hell. The movement seems about in line with unskilled players playing QL, and the clip of air control seems to look pretty good.

The reveal for the new doom looked a lot worse and that game didn't turn out bad for single player. Multiplayer was obv intended for consoles and not made by id. It's a bit strange how much they made the game modes and weapons like quake champions though.

So its basically an ow with a quake name so the kids can believe they are old school.

I have mixed feelings,

im positive about:

- Its a new Quake

- It has the railgun, lg, rocket launcher, machine gun

- Rocket jumps

- Other familiar items.

- Voices/Announcer (diffrent but OK)

- Campgrounds

What i dont like:

- Gun models this is my biggest concern. They should make the railgun as we know it, but with higher details.The gun models they use now make it look like UT. This i really don't understand.

- The champions, i still have big doubts about it. Maybe they should rename the game to Quake Championship and remove the champions (classes)

- Maps some of the maps don't give me the 'Arena' feeling.

- The new gameplay trailer was awful, we really didn't see much.

- CPMA movement, i just hate this over the top air control and fast movement. Its like CPMA/Reflex i just dont like it.

I couldn't put my finger on what gave the UT vibe, but your a right, its mainly the weapon models. The environments look a little too cluttered and that probably contributes too.

Too difficult to say anything about the game play without hands on or more video. But the weapons HAVE to change.

I don't see why they wouldn't just do a new twist on the old weapons, they are unique timeless designs that would be easy for designers to play with.

It could go either way at this point i think, the art direction is the main worry right now.

What is important is that they keep the horror / gore / gothic theme of Quake, a blessing.

It didn't look bad at all, apart from some noobish sequences with beginner moves, I think we should wait for some pros to try it and give us their opinion, but this extract looked pretty good.

In my opinion, if we want good for the Quake franchise as a whole, we should try to be as positive as possible, and not directly hate on with sardonic comments and so on and bashing about how it's a blantant copy of Overwatch (it sure isn't at the moment, there is nothing more awful that the kawai-anime-girlish style of Overwatch and the strafe and rocketjumps moments in the extract shows the movement will be quake 3ish, which means the most fluid experience), especially on broad medias (facebook, youtube, etc.) because there will be nothing good out of it and there is a possibility that if the next Quake is a success it will also benefit the other Quakes too.

Go on id, I still have faith and I'm sure you can make a good horror-themed fast arena game, bringing minor inovations while staying true to the core of the game, and bring a classic Quake mod with it for the oldschoolers that dislike the characters-powerups.

There is one banal thing: our expectations are nobody else problems.

We didn't see anything relatively close to the final game yet. Everything could be miles better, the models, the weapons, the explosions, other SFX, etc, etc, etc. Or not)

So, whats about me, i'm going to look at the game when its ready and only then form my opinion.

I remember how ugly i felt Q3 was comparing to Q2 and Q1 from the first sight. I thought it was way too bright and clownish comparing to the "serious" and minimalistic first quakes. Then i got used to.

Keeping in mind that its only alpha and everything could be just a scetch, i could say that i somehow dislike how QC weapons look in this trailer, well, maybe except MG - the design is not simple enough, they're too futuristic and lack "real feel" and these combat sfx, all these crappy projectiles.

I hope that UT-look is somewhat temporary.

But most of all, i hope that the overall gameplay look will be more alike with the first cinematic trailer, like, where did all that dark and devilish and dangerous atmosphere gone. Everything is so lighthearted and unserious now.

Metaphorically speaking, nobody's going to be afraid while watching some A-class thriller, filmed in this overall look and atmosphere.

P.S. I rewatched the gameplay trailer several times more, the maps and the light feels okay, its just the weapons and the models that give that silly look, as far as i understand.

They really shouldn't have recorded sponge playing for the official gameplay video. Bad marketing.

Not to concerned about the graphics, as long as we have enough config options I'm sure most of us will turn it down anyway and I usually hide my weapon model.

The gameplay does look considerably fast, I guess we will have to see how it handles in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, but I saw some good air-control, rocket jumps, strafe jumping, wasn't all too bad.

I'm still going to reserve my judgement till we actually see some beta game play, hopefully someone like noctis or equally decent gets there hands on it and puts it through it's paces for a proper review.

No, there hasn't and let's be realistic you probably won't have drawgun 0 option, or picmip. My guess is you'll be able to select from low, medium and high gfx with some options t toggle like AA...

Personnaly, I am not a difficult person at all when it comes to graphics, so I wonder.

As I said, the graphics look very busy. There are many small effects and details that make it look like nothing really stands out. As a result, it looks like a flat mash of thousand little parts instead of one big picture.

Technically it looks like a 2013 game, but thats forgivable. I'd rather see a nice conceptual design instead, but thats also not given.

The weapons all look very similiar and suffer from the same problem as the overall graphics. They are overdesigned and thus hard to discern, they look... unexciting.

Thats why the graphics look very bland and thus UGLY to me.

This video from q3 is telling you the story of sarge being kidnapped by the vadrigar. It shows a battle outside of q3 world (or should we say 'before'); Sarge uses a different weapon and fights a horde of strange enemies, and as he's going for his desperate and corageous charge the vadrigar teleport him away into q3 realm.


The video in the op is showing actual game footage, within qc characters, weapons, arenas, etc.

more player = better working ranked matchmaking = fun for everyone

I don't understand why people think so highly of matchmaking. Tier slumming, smurfs and cheaters can ruin the fun for lower skill players even in high populated games, and at the same time, game modes like FFA can be quite fun even with uneven skill.

Another issue with matchmaking, when it's too "good", is that you'll never feel progress. That annoyed me in SC2 a lot. You practice and practice and practice, for weeks, months, and you will still end up with a 50% chance to win each game. It's demoralising.

Compare to random pubs in CS, Quake or TF2: With each week of practice you see yourself scoring better, getting more frags, and at some point become the best player on the server (even when you're still not amazingly good). This kind of rewarding feeling you never get with perfect matchmaking.

Instead of imo soulless ranked MM, I'd rather see a revival of real leagues and tournaments, where there is a chance to fail or succeed, not just "here is your next 50% winchance match hf".

It looks like they are doing the same "mistake" by having the rockets come out of the player model (Quake 4 like). This makes the RL fell very lagy in comparison to Quake 3 where the rocket starts a bit ahead (at the top of the RL).

Yep, q3 has special hard-coded fix for this - moving projectile 50ms ahead when firing. Apparently someone at id found it important, you can suggest it when there is beta.

I think graphics is a bit generic as a term. My main complain is the visual design of the weapons. I can reduce their texture detail at picmic 16, but the geometry is what it is, and I have a hard time liking them. I would much rather a not so creative copy of the previous design than the new one I see here.

In my opinion, modern arena shooters only work well if they're kind of 'cell shaded', like OW/TF2. This way you can have nice graphics without giving the player too much clutter to look at. So, if you're able to tone everything down - complex geometry is going to stay complex which is kinda needed for a modern game.

I really hope the devs will get it perfectly right; where the maps look gritty and quake-like, yet, making sure your FOV doesnt get too busy.

As for the gameplay video; I really hate all that bloom and 'smoke' the rockets seem to leave after impact; can't really see anything because of it. One would assume this can be turned off.

The graphics seem to be a mishmash at least at this point. All these highly detailed models and environments, then for example you have these over the top, cartoonish gibs.

And those gun models, way too elaborate. I could understand if this was a game that also had an SP campaign, but as a multiplayer "esports" title? Even back in '99, those q3 weapons weren't the most elaborate. Should've taken the q3 weapons as a base and modified them. Heck, maybe look at all the past Quakes and come up with designs that maybe blend them all or a couple.

Q3 had a perfect balance between aesthetics and simplicity. Those guns look like spaceships, just like Q4.

it's all ok IF they allow modding. People will fix the game after the release.

Game looks clunky, but fun. Definitely better than Quake 4.

The railgun should be a white slug with a blue spiral by default and adjustable like in QL. But I expect it to be customizeable. It wouldn't be Quake if we couldn't change the graphics to flat single colour surfaces and non-curved geometry.

I would like more, if you were not able to picmip QC. It's 2016, a lot of players would love to play in nicer gfx, but you are forced to do so, becouse of disadvantage. I like how CS 1.6 was and how CSGO is. You can customize to low quality,but not totaly one color shit.. In QL I have already played with picmip 3 and simplemipmaps 0.

Agree, picmip gives too much of an advantage to not use it. Game should still reassemble itself on lowest settings.

Can you even "picmip" textures on idTech5 (Rage, Wolfenstein) and idTech6 (Doom) games? Does anyone have a screenshot how it looks? I mean, if it's not possible in Doom, it won't be possible in QC.

Yeah that makes no sense. They can modify the engine all they want. However, I don't believe the game will have picmip. There may be a few texture quality options available though

CS:GO looks like fucking shit and you can't see anything at all compared to in 1.6 and even Source, so no thanks. I'll take me being able to see and graphics retards having nice graphics but no visibility over everyone have no visibility so everything can be "fair"

Looks interesting. Its funny seeing people say the graphics are too busy here whereas elsewhere on general gaming sites you have people saying it looks too barebones and not good enough (probly for 120fps/hz play). It just shows how wide the gap is between what average gamers expect and what quake players want.

I'm glad they are trying something and really glad its an actual multiplayer focused product rather than the mp side of a single player game. I'll try it.

this actually looks a lot like q3 with modern graphics and over the top effects, which combined with some matchmaking, focus on team modes and social features like overwatch is all that is needed to revive the arena fps genre for real.

Ugh, that UT2k style weapon and character design. "Look, we got higher polycount budgets, add lots of intricate bits and bobs and protruding elements to show it off!".
It's possible to make detailed models that don't look just plain busy and like a mess of flickering pixels in some situations. One can use more triangles and more modern everything to round things off, bevel hard edges out, break off surfaces to make things more interesting, and it doesn't have to be that garish.

I can't see the reported lovecraftian inspiration in that aztec map or player/weapons, apart from maybe that large squid-like idol pictured on a door. The art style does push the "fun sci-fi", kinda "5th Element" trend that emerged in Q3 further though (and into UT2k territory).
From what we've got so far, this is markedly not in the vein of Quake design, with its stark contrasts, gothic architecture and taste of "the future is old". That is disappointing to me.

Yes, animations are currently repulsive (at least they fit the hitbox :D ), but that will most likely change. The models and art direction though, not in a significant way.

Gameplay looks Quakish enough so far. That, Ranger and Visor. Maybe that basement with anarki2 (but not him) and "new campgrounds", although the bricks and lighting there evoke the UT2k remake.

Quake is a mishmash of styles to start with, both intra-game (Quake1, Quake 3/Live) and inter-games (Q1/3/L vs. Q2/4) so that really doesn't surprise me.

The very first trailer had a weapon pickup (albeit dropped by an enemy iirc) and they said there are no loadouts.

The graphics by themselves don't mean much, mostly what matters is the extent we will be able to modify the visuals. The casuals will like those big guns across half the screen, but if they will provide cg_drawgun for the client, then everything is forgiven. The same goes for a lot of the functionality of the game. Perhaps we won't have all the console commands straight off the bat and they will slowly integrate something based on the community whining.
