Can someone please ask them two questions?

1. Can they tune match making so it wouldn't be possible for weak players to against the good players that already proved their skill by playing many duels? Watching Cypher play against the guy that doesn't know how to strafe jump is painful.

2. Can they make it possible to play against chosen opponent? We could have tournaments like 125FPS Sunday Cup. I think it would be very symbolic and well-earned if they would host the first QC cup. Also a lot of information for developers.

As I understand from the lore Sorlag is a female and thus the animation portrays female dominance over males. Since the game seems to adhere to egalitarian values I think there should be a counter balancing animation that portrays a male eating a part of a female, preferably Clutch eating Nyx's pussy.

They said small duel map, if they bring something small as aero or toxic the games will last full 90seconds for 3 rounds.

Hope all of this backfires them in thir rear-end like quake 4 did....same thing not fixed netcode, not fixed sounds, killed the game in first two months of being released.

i have an idea for a game. there could be two different colored balls, one at each end of the map. players compete to obtain the ball that matches the other team's color, and then return that ball to their own base. teams get a point for each ball brought back to their own base. i haven't heard of any other game doing anything like this.

Adding to that, I've noticed that they:

- are absolutely positive duels will stay the same
- they're gonna push that sacrifice BS through the roof, if need be.

I really don't understand how they fail to understand the importance of 10 minute rounds QL (or 15 mins on Q3) had, what kind of microclimate it creates, and how deep it makes the game. Currently, there's not enough time to do anything.

In every thing they talk about, they're referring to "new players" and how they want to encourage them by beating down the skilled ones, with all kinds of new game mechanics, they seem to be proud of it.

Mr. Tim Willits even acknowledged that there are like 10 professional QL players who would dominate the scene if 1v1 format stays the same. And he was like "we've added this round system into 1v1 so that new players can 'surprise' the pros".

Jesus Christ almighty. Just add a nuke for the worse player, if his level is lower, and call it a day.


Overall, QC has a very interesting mesh of movement mechanics, adding CPMA on Anarki, Slash has the crouchy thing, and then there are other champions who basicly adhere to Q3. That, in reality, is a very interesting concept, meshing all quakes together.

Also - champion abilities seem to be interesting at first sight, but just like Cypher and Cooller said during their gameplay sessions, it's true - it promotes passive play.

There was even a duel with Cypher vs Cooller, accidental duel, where Cypher unknowingling, as a promise to the stream, chose all tank champions. Cooller beat him using Nyx, playing all times passive, provoking things, always +back, not moving at all. They both played exceptionally creative, and it was an eye-opener.

This new duel mode sucks full-time. You lose so many strategies, so much "comeback" depth, so much counting and positional play.
Champion abilities add to that, I've seen how Nitrino or was it Agent, abused Nyx's ability very creatively, giving them the edge. At the very moment there's no way to fight Nyx, only with Visor's WH ability.
It's like, you keep chasing someone, you're about to get the hard-deserved kill you've been working on, and Nyx or Ranger just - bam - vanishes, teleports away or w/e.

Yes, old strategies won't work, because of that. That means new strategies and a whole new meta game will have to be developed by the bright ones, every "best way" to do everything will have to be coined. The problem at the very moment is that with such low timelimits it's going to be +back after the 1st frag, and their "exciting new dynamic dynamics" will backfire at them.

But it would be miles better with the bigger fraglimit. Even 4 per round (if its absolutely necessary to give new-comers a chance with these rounds). I don't understand how game people still don't understand that this concept never works. How many games were killed by developers trying to make the game easier. They always somehow think that this will attract so-called midcore players. It NEVER does. Good players ALWAYS rape the weak ones. Doesn't matter the mode, the balance. This is just a fucking dead end. Noobs don't stay, good players leave the game because it becomes random and idiotic.

Bottom line, don't simplify the game for noobs. Just make them swim in their noob pool, add some fun modes, events, challenges and some stupid cases\skins - people like to buy this useless crap.

Don't know what their problem is. But it keeps dinging, that it's lack of creativity. They're forcing things upon people, that never ends well.

People are speculating tournaments (Quakecon in particular) will have a different system, in which all characters have to be used/picked. That by itself would balance the champions a whole lot.

Plus Nyx already has a counter: Clutch. Yep, that fucking robot good for nothing has every single tool to counter everything Nyx does. Rapha has been using him extensively, along all other champs, being the only top tier dueler that is actually thinking outside the box and straight up preparing to win the event rather than only friendly matches.

In the end in this new system you lose some strategies but you also get some newer ones. It's just most people haven't noticed the latter yet.

Lastly, lets not pretend QL duel had an aggressive playstyle. Your paragraph about cooller vs. cypher describes all matches they had in QL.

The problem I have with comments like this is pretending QL duel is a bastion of +forward play. It's not. Q3 was not very +forward either... if you wanted to win.

Want to make the game less passive? Remove the railgun entirely.

You would likely have to increase the rocket speed and splash damage as well or people would run away in perpetuity once they get a decent lead. It'll never happen though, newbies loved the rail when it debuted in Q2 and it's now considered a required gun for the Quake series. Very sad.

Honestly though, how does it make sense to add more damage with zoom that makes it easier to hit targets at range? It makes zero sense to me. A charge up mechanic doesn't change that.

QL beta was also a lot of fun and better than the final QL and I think they had a lot more players in the beginning not just because it was new but because QL game mechanics in beta were nice; not everything need to be "balanced" to the ground and sometimes on the contrary balancing things too much contravenes to the idea of having fun and put to the extreme it can even harm hardcore gameplay mechanics.

But since id Software listened to the most vocal quake players out there they nerfed down weapons and made everything more difficult aim wise by putting emphasis on smaller hitboxes and weaker weapons, the number got diminished by the days. There were less and less "experts" just to play to each other and to complain about the smaller playerbase.

I know for a fact that the 80 rail (q3 already gave spawned players 120 health so they could not be railed dead-right from the spawned) was not something I liked but I was dealing with it. But on top of that they destroyed the shotgun so defense strategies started to suffer a lot then they reduced hitboxes a lot so you had to train additionally 2hours/day on top of daily train to aim decently all piled up to the point that I considered that it was too much so I stopped playing.

Summary of stream:

* Voice communication is being worked on and should become available in one of the upcoming beta tests.

* Training for new players is in the works.

* Options to configure your HUD will come online "soon". (comparison with Quake Live was made)

* XP for sacrifice is adjusted and will be available in the next test.

* Beta testers will get something special for partaking in the beta.

* Soul in sacrifice can be thrown a little too far, will probably get tweaked.

* Soul can be thrown out of bounds strategically, will be looked into.

* Scalebearer's ability combo's too well with the soul throwing, will be looked into.

* Duel specific maps are being tested internally right now (Tim said some classic maps from QL will make a return).

* A rematch option for duel is coming. No word on continuous playing for other gamemodes.

* When talking about a grenade launcher a hint was dropped to a champion who would fill that role.

* There will be no separate config file, configuration will all take place inside the game.

In DOTAs you can shit on someone with a good pick. In Quake it's still fair...ish game.

I'd like to believe that, but if it were true, there'd be no good reason not to just have traditional duel where each player picks only one champion at the beginning and uses it for the whole match.

Shouldn't the best players be able to utilize multiple, if not all of the champions? It would seem that your way would encourage just focusing on one champion, and no need to learn the rest.

Seems to me that if somebody loses their best champion in a duel due to death, they should be punished for it. It also adds excitement when somebody is known to be a top Anarki player for example, but drops that first frag and now has to adjust.

It's impractical to try to counter pick with only three champion selection. That's the entire reason for it.

Your opponent just does not necessarily have in his selection the champ needed to counter you.

Well, that is why they put down that selection screen before the game, where you choose your champions, it's like ... mindgames etc.


Anyway, most of these duel things are gimmicks, that are not needed. It's artificially creating a context for spectators and commentators to talk about "before the pro match", about "mindgames".

This system kind of reminds me of street fighter. They probably thought of it, were very happy of how smart it sounded, and went with it.

Of course, there's space for human creativity and other things when there are so many numbers in equasion, yet what I think is going to happen is chaos. They're trying to simplify the game for newcommers with pizza timers and "quad in 15", and all that other stuff, yet they're bringing in so much new stuff into the game, even the pro players are struggling some times (im referring to rapha/cooller/cypher occasionally losing in duels on QC).

So - even if the pros are having trouble here and there - who dedicate their lives and a lot of their free time to learn the game, to think about it, to analyse it - heck, they even have certain mechanisms and models for analisation, how to make it faster - so even if they struggle here and there - what will happen with your every day casual player, who works 8-12 hours a day, has 1-1.5 hours for gaming and all the cash that ID and Beth need for their business model ?

Well, after they added champs, it wasn't really surprising that they looked for inspiration in fighting games. I just don't think it is terribly exciting. Rounds are horrible. They break up the flow. Rounds are basically coitus interruptus.

The only real benefit rounds have ever had is chatting in the downtime in CA, and the rounds in QC don't enable that anyway.

I started off thinking champions were a bad idea, then I grew to accept them, and now after playing for a while, I'm starting to go back to where I started. They really don't add much, and they create a lot of problems.

I don't think it is a bad thing that any of this is creating challenges for pros. I just don't want the losses they face to be due to increased randomness.

i like the idea of having the different movements (cpm vq3 q4) in one game with the champion solution and think with some balance it can be nice.

i am a CA player and i cant see how the abilitys should work in CA.

Otherwise Sacrifice and TDM are dumpt down so i think i dont realy will miss CA in QC. If we get an "Rematch" and "join a Friends server" button it will be ok.

I find a lot of the abilities annoying and cheap.

Different hitbox sizes create the problem of balancing health to damage, the solution to which will vary depending on the aiming ability of the players involved. For example, halving the size of the hitbox may half the damage with a bad aimer, but it may make only a small difference for a great aimer. There's no universal solution.

Different amounts of health mean different champs get different percentages of their total health out of pickups. Small champs are probably given even less health to compensate. In general, the pickup system is confusing. It rounds 25 hp pickups' value, so if you're on 1-12 hp, a 25 hp pickup will always make you have 25 afterwards. And this has the side effect of picking up the same armour pickups (including shards) in a different order giving different amounts of armour.

Champions also mean you can't be all-round good. There has to be something WRONG with you: not fast enough, not small enough, not strong enough.

It's a lot of fuss for not much gain. I think the champions idea is built around the idea of selling vanity shit. Once you have all these champions of different size, it becomes unthinkable to give them all the same hitbox in 2017. Once you give them different hitboxes, you have to give them different health, and it just proceeds from there.

Oh well, it is fun enough, and QL is more or less dead here, so I hope I can play QC instead for a while before it becomes dead too.

I think there will be a rematch vote and private games, but I'm not expecting persistent public servers.

current duel mode is shit.. no question! so a classic mode would be nice to see but if not they have to do something arround the champions and not roundbased!

in teammodes i like the champions!

I'm pretty sure that classic mode is confirmed---in the sense that you will be able to make a custom game and tweak the settings to turn off champion abilities or whatever. But I'm pretty sure you won't be able to join such games through the matchmaking queue, and it's not going to be the mode they promote for tournaments and whatnot.

That is exactly the problem here.

The very first tournaments will be forced to be played on these broken duel formats. That has two sides - it is good, that some players will find exploits and what is actually wrong with round-based duel, and is going to shove it in everyone's faces, another (bad) one is - it's unclear how long will we stand this new duel mode after quakecon. Are they going to keep forcing it ? Or will they admit their errors ?

I've listened to every interview they did. The thing is, that, they're like "yeah duel is very fun, we like it, OK", "but yeah...", "we're the most excited about objective based gameplay".

In essence, that means most of the tournament money, promotion etc. is going towards "Sacrifice". I bet even the prize pool is going to be much much bigger.

Also, Classic mode. Probably confirmed.
However - how do you balance it ? Just like you mentioned, CaptainTaichou, there are certain pillars for balancing this game:

- hitbox size
- healthpool
- speed
- movement mechanics
- abilities

Even if you cross out everything and try to make it quake3 style of play ( "classic"), it won't really work, because hitbox size stays.
They would need to remake all the models for classic with different hitboxes, OR force model keel lol.

Probably the best way to do classic mode would be to turn off abilities and have both players using the same champion.

I don't think they are gonna go to all the effort of creating different stats just for classic mode.

I can live with classic duel and champion based teammode.

Even if they drop rounds in duel and make it like i sayed that u can play the complete match with one champion.

Think about that: players not only vote maps they want to play they vote the champion infront of the game too. Than both play with the same champion the fist map pick and after that the second map with different champion.

It woukd be fair all time and pros have to lern every champion.

That might work for tournaments but not normal online play where each duel is a self-contained thing not part of a series.

Wellp, there are problems everywhere you look, any way you customize the duels, if champs and their abilities and other characteristics stay.

The problem with the current duel is the fact that you're forced to change champions, once you get killed. And if you're afraid of getting killed, because you don't want to lose your champion, that promotes passive play, which is boring.

Where cooller goes against some pros from Russia. Not only the video is hilarious "because it's cooller and his reactions to things", but it's quite clear how fast these guys are comming up with techniques with Nyx and other champions.



And I've been thinking about it - even if it was "for the best interest" for us to switch to classic mode, I don't think anyone will, anymore.
There's just something so bizzarre and interesting about the champions and the way they are different. I get the feeling that nobody will want to go back to standard QL play, after the QC's mix of CPMA, Q4 and Q3 movement mix.


The things we might want to target first, are:

- rail zoom damage;
- stupidity of new duel format;
- nagging ID and Beth to bring back some oldschool maps;
- ironing out map balance (item spawn locations etc.);
- toning down overpowered abilities, as soon as tournament play shows what's actually up;
- getting back our beloved console.


What boggles my mind is that they're strangling us. Their reason about removing the console is "to make players concentrate on the game, rather than fiddling with stuff". I understand their reason - not to give advanced config "geeks" an advantage over newborns.

So now if I want to change my sensitivity - I have to go into the menu, which is 3-4 clicks away, then I have to go to the sensitivity slider, adjust it, or I have to click on sensitivity number, which currently is clumsy, delete, type in etc. etc. So instead of clicking console, typing 2 letters and pressing TAB to set in what I want fast, I will have to go through the process of climbing hills, every time I want to adjust it just slightly, until I get it perfect.

And what about video settings ? Custom resolutions ? /in_mouse (-1, 1, 2) ? Will I have to quit the game every time I want to change those, go to my config file, and edit it there, scroll through it, save it, then load up the game again ? Or will they make it even worse and encode it and lock it ?

Quake has always been about speed, customizing your stuff. Bang bang - you're in the game, you get your dose of blood, you get out, you go play other modes.
Now everything has become a tedious process with time wasted on every single conrner, beginning with endless map loading, cut-scenes, ready-up cinematics, and ending with going to the moon to change your sens.
