Why reward the losers?
The players will get flown there for free and then get money handouts. Id/Bethesda effectively paying people to play their game. Quakers welfare.
Winner takes all is very off putting for a lot of upcoming players and will kill the scene even faster than id itself can do it.
In essence I have nothing against rapha winning around 500k every year at quakecon for the next ten years / assuming that the duel and sacrifice pools are split, but keep in mind that all the competitions will go away, because people cannot afford to spend time on this game for year a year for just a small chance of winning.
Yeah right, that's what we've said for n+1 years, but no matter how much they are ahead and no matter how solid the tournament win already is the europeans manage to choke every single fucking time (read evil)
Let's take evil/rapha from last year's quakecon. Their skill difference is only very slight, and the final could end either way. But if we reward only the winner, then it means that for having just a tiny bit higher skill, rapha would get infinitely better reward, which other players would not consider fair and lose the motivation to compete, so that it ends up in no one playing this game at all except maybe 2-3 top players.
$100k for first place duel is shite in relation to the prize pool
you're the best individual player at the game and you take home 10% of the 'pool, seems a little crappy especially considering that's the only game mode that anyone is going to be watching as sacrifice/tdm are mind numblingly dull to spectate
Duel prize pool isnt 1M, 1st place is 30% circa, not so bad.
It's still more than last 4-5 qcon duel tournament combined lol.
And 10k for 9-16th is a nice incentive to see lots of good eu players, not the same 3-4 top name like old qcon (the only ones who could take decent prize to cover cost trip)
Prize pool is 1M in total, teams deserve more for obvious reasons.
Still good for duel winner, last qcon editions 1st took 8-10k, for eu players placing 3rd or 4th meant nothing, covering the trip cost at max.
If qc has success, more tournaments/year etc, i think 3-4 top names can live with quake.
To "make life comfortable" you should win dota international :D
100k is more than enough. This distribution keeps the community alive and developing. With a prize pool distribution of (for example a 500k prize pool):
1st 450K
2nd 40k
3rd 5k
4th-10th the remaining
we would see the the majority of people quit the game, the scene dying etc.
Thats one way to see it, youre forgeting tho its the 32 best players getting money on the team mode, while only the best 16 in duel. So its just more shared between teams, total purse is way higher in the team mode than duel.
Ummm you can't be carried in any well thought out team mode. If you don't understand we shouldn't be having a conversation. Most teams are well built and have a players specialised to certain roles.
A few years ago 4 Old Men v 102? Who was carried by who?
If teams are properly constructed then no, marginal differences at best taking into account skillset variables. No team would be willing to carry anyone significantly worse.
There's this thing called best of... It means a single game can't eliminate you from any format. This is Quake dude, you don't have bad days. You can have good days but you're never going to dip from a certain base level of skill they have.
They aren't athletes who can injure themselves and play subpar, they're gamers. Significant upsets don't happen.
You can have a 'bad day' but you're not going to let a guy who's a tier below you into your team in the first place. That's the point. Any one of them can have a bad day doesn't make them less deserving of it. Stupid logic.
quake pushing a team mode... sounds so wrong in so many levels
so u want more money for sacrifice? duel probably brought the 1 million, since is so great to watch and now, sacrifice, which is like watching paint dry in a wall, takes a whole 660K out of it (out of something that never earned or deserved) and u r not happy???
No I'm not hard to please at all. I'm quite pleased with this initial tournament, I'd just like to see a better prize distribution.
What exactly did Duel do to deserve this money?
Oh I see you mean the fact that Duel propelled Quake Live to the frontier of FPS E-Sports and garnered millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers. THAT DUEL! Oh wait...
yes duel did a huge lot to ql. Gave ql so many interesting tourneys, while ql having a tiny community and player base. And is still doing, with this 1 million tourney. Do you think that ESL signed up for this for showcasing sacrifice??
tdm and ctf (not really sacrifice) are indeed needed for helping increasing the player base and make the game available to a broader audience.
anw I am happy they have both. I don't enjoy specing team games, but having a team mode tourney, will make far more players train, which is good.
Quake used to have a ton of popular team modes before Quake 3 effectively killed them with the machine gun. Even OSP turning the damage down couldn't fix the fundamental problem with a relatively powerful starting weapon.
So, anyway, Quake used to be more than just duel but id software fucked that up and never fixed it.
A year round league doesn't really make sense, the balance gets skewed, the game changes and it prevents other things from going but. But a huge mistake in not making four tournaments instead of one, or something like that.
Bigger tournament will stimulate hype and growth in player population. Go big or go home as they say. A year round league will come late on when money generation from ftp platform kicks in.
One should only generate hype, when there is a solid product which can support said hype, or the whole thing can backfire.
While QC is fun, it's very unoptimized and buggy at this moment, not ready for the big stage (imho).

That is sort of misleading, the duel regional finals are the 5th (online) sacrifice finals are the 6th (LAN @ Burbank/Leicester).
h8m3 - Last Saturday at 5:28 AM
so how will it be for players who qualified for both? they will have to play from ESL studio a day before sacrifice?
ESL | zerolove - Last Saturday at 5:29 AM
Yes, but we've already accomodated that into the schedule
There will be setups for them to play their online matches from our studios.
