my boss is swis. I can say he is a natual when it comes to barging for money that said, fucker paid me expenses for commuting with public transport, even tho i've been driving to work for 2 years (yes i live 20km out of the main city and work) so now i pay 70€ more for gas so i dont have to wake up at 6am to get to work at 8am. I guess it could be worse. :)

Pay is very good here, but keep in mind that everything is also very expensive. You can't look only at the wage you will earn. I don't think at the end of the month you will have much more money to spend than in Austria or Germany for example.

As far as I know, every EU-citizen can stay permanently in the country, if he has a job. Actually, there is a vote to limit immigration from EU countries on the coming 9th of february. But at the moment it looks like it won't be accepted (and even if it will be it will take 2-3 years to come into effect).

If you have a good education (and degrees) in IT you shouldn't have a problem to find a job in this area. I wouldn't advise you to just come to the country without a job. There are many people from Greece/Spain/Portugal etc who do this at the moment and many of them have to leave again because they can't find anything.

How expensive? I'm calculating a small flat to be available for 1200-1800€ a month in central Zürich but other than that it doesn't seem to be much more expensive than Oslo for example and more so since taxes are way lower (roughly 17% in the canton of Zürich). Salaries within my work (IT) varies between 130-180K CHF a year. That's twice what I'm getting now (and roughly 15-20% less tax on top of that!) Am I missing something? My calculations which are quite pessimistic look quite promising when considering the whole picture.

Will just being able to speak English be enough or is there a big preference to hire people that speak german? Is german different to swiss german? I'm thinking English is enough when working within IT even though I know that it's always a plus to speak the local language somewhat decently.

Speaking English fluently is good, and in Zurich you'll have to speak German as well iirc, and the Swiss German is different, in uni all the Germans and people who learned German (like me) have a hard time understanding Swiss German... Even the best student in my group. You'll have to learn it, if you like languages and learning, then it shouldn't be a nightmare. Concerning the small flat you're talking about, it depends honestly. How big, how many rooms do you want exactly? Because I'm pretty sure you'll be surprised how expensive it can be lol. By the way you should also count the cost of living globally not only the rent, but the best way to know is to visit and see everything yourself.

If it's true then life in Zurich is definitely more expensive, at least since I'm in Geneva (a bit more expensive than Zurich, maybe it changed though D:) every week I know that it's more expensive than what this website shows.

Thanks. You need to take into account that even tho prices of food, flats and such things are lower in Scandinavia we have lower wages aswell as high taxes. Numbers are just numbers and what really matters is the impact the lower prices make on your private economy.

I haven't decided on moving yet, just eager to move somewhere where the climate is better and were I can potentially save up money to buy me a bigger house/summer house. The wages are definately interesting but there's more reasons to move abroad. Switzerland seems like a nice place to work for a couple of years. Good climate and more defined seasons, close to everything in Europe. Flight back to relatives in Sweden is only 2 hours away and my parents summer house in Spain would be closer too :) I do a lot of road biking and Switzerland is fantastic for that.

Learning swiss german will be an interesting experience :)

I don't think its (much) more expensive than Oslo.
They show a ranking with the most expensive cities in the world once in a while in the newspapers, and Oslo is usually close to the top similar to Geneva and Zurich.

When you work in a big IT company, english will usually suffice. However people who don't speak the local language at all are not very popular around here...
Do you have a lot of experience or very good degrees in your working area? Because 130k-180k sounds like a lot to me. I don't think your starting wage will be this high.

Swiss german is a bit different to german, many germans have difficulties understanding it (at first). For example if someone is talking swiss german in german tv it's subtitled. And swiss german movies are even dubbed in german tv.
But of course, everyone speaks also standard german. So if swiss german people are talking to foreigners, they (should) use standard german.

Thanks. I will have to look everything through. I have a colleagues who already made the move and the wages are within that range. I have a M.Sc in IT and 4 years of experience. Wages within Business Intelligence are very blown up across Europe due to it being an expanding area and a shortage of people with these skills.

In France many people work in Switzerland because it's wayyyy better, we call them the "frontaliers" for the ones who are French live in France at the border but work in Switzerland, I have family in both countries, and I have some friends from uni who stopped studying to work there, that's how good the opportunity can be. But you can also be unlucky. My family who lives in Switzerland has the nationality, and if you wanna have a good life there (very good incomes and everything else) you gotta have a very good job too. If you work as a bartender for instance in France, you will never get as much as a bartender in Switzerland. I know someone he quit his job in France, he does the same in Switzerland, and he lives at the border, he is VERY happy.

I don't wanna sell dreams, it's your choice man, I would say that it's like everyone who goes to the USA for the "american dream", and well we all know it can work out, and it can't. It's the same in Switzerland. If you have a degree though, and they look for people like you with your degree, it can be interesting. I'm probably going to work there if I can.

Why switzerland? It's really expensive. Why not go to the Philippines for example? Check out cost of living stats, your average salary at home might earn you a really nice lifestyle other places.

If you're paid accordingly, and not locally, that is. Having IT background is very helpful, of course, either go with a foreign company abroad or just freelance, and work from home / the beach.

As someone who lived over there for 8 years (in Bern) and having my parents moving back there last summer, I can tell you, it won't be as lucrative as you might imagine. Like other people already said, you get paid more but you also pay more for living there.

A rather shocking example for me was, that when I was looking into going to university in Bern earlier this year, their official site suggested that a student should have an income of around 2000 CHF in order to be living and studying in Bern. That's roughly 1600 €. I am living and studying in Freiburg (not exactly living there, have a 30 minute train-ride to the university) and I can live absolutely fine with 900 €. I think that illustrates pretty well how much more expensive Switzerland really is.

Unfortunately I can't really give you any good advice, since I've no idea about the immigration politics, or if you're going to be fine just by speaking English, or how the integration process is.

All I can say is Switzerland is a very nice country with a very high standard of living. If you're able to find a good job, you're going to be just fine. (But I think being able to speak German is quite important)

if swiss german is as "different" as swedish and danish, then i can see how hard it would be for germans to understand swiss german, lol. Swedish is impossible to understand, although they seem to understand danish just fine.
