well, new gen is not picking up the game ... old gen is fading out, if u r 30+ it is not well regarded that you play "games", but I dont really like that term tbh., just say you play "Quake", I think playing quake is similar to playing table tennis, you compete against others and you are not just watching t.v. passively ... (btw, why is watching t.v. stupid and watching netflix is cool?) ...
anyway I play like 3 times a week, in EU regularly get a game, though searching for ffa & tdm, 90 % of the time I get to play tdm ... for me its fun right now ... hope it stays the way, I like the idea of champions, its a solid improvement, though I only play the fast and "quakish" ones (nyx, anarki, doom, slash) ... when hitboxes are working, the game at its core should be good (enough) ... I dont care for esports, I dont care for lol/dota, starcraft ... I just wanna have enough players to regularly play the game and compete against them

Unsurprising that an American is positive about that crap. I can't help but think it really is the nationwide expectations of competition-destroying formats that make you guys uncritical of them.

Even if it did make the league successful, and ignoring the anti-competition aspect, it's quite the opposite of what many of us here loved about esports - the grassroots organic fan aspect. Not making a failed esports game suddenly big by cucking the competitive scene and giving businesses ridiculous promises, potentially even ignoring sports interests (don't quote me on last one, just saw some content explaining this a while back).

you may say that OW has not much depth but saying its a failed esports game is just plain wrong. I think Blizzard has done everything right as per growing an esports base.

1. made a fps something that people coming from MOBA background
(by and large the biggest population of gamers) as well people coming from hardcore fps background feels equally at home - check

2. Made a game that is fun when played casual or competitive - check

3. Actually managed to grow a player base such that a competitive scene has enough level of interest and following - check

The only thing wrong about OW is that the game itself puts some limitation on what a player can or cannot do unlike quake etc

I don't find the type of game fun, and personally I really dislike the extreme limitations that the game puts on players (for me, that is a large part of the beauty of oldschool games which I prefer to this day). With that said, I was more so commenting on the business / casual game / esports scene infrastructure and following aspects. I think the game was relatively unpopular to watch considering the playerbase, and if it has grown (I don't know the numbers), it was done in a very top down, forced way. Such are the times, of course, but for me that's somewhat distasteful. The fact that nobody really wanted to watch it before specifically.

With that said, I understand why people play it, it has Blizz backing, it's good as a product, it has the network effect, it looks nice. I know QC is shit as a product comparatively. That I find the gameplay really uninspiring and somewhat sad for more serious / competitive players is not really relevant for that, if we assume that other people don't want it at least, and they're really not asking for it.

Edit: Oh and the closed league... That is very competition-destroying, and I really hate it. It's unsurprising that companies go for it, of course, but why do fans stomach and support it..? That's the saddest part for me.

I don't watch overwatch but why is everyone in the OW league korean? I mean a lot of the teams are literally just 7 koreans or whatever the team size is, way too many koreans. Now I get it if this is from korea, but the idea of a "regional" team is that the team is made of people from the region... why does the london team have koreans then? Ok maybe a tangent but, seriously what is even the point of associating the team with the place if nobody from the team is english?

Quake always was out of time game, but now it's feels like completely OUTDATED game. Thx to QC, now I'm free from my addiction too. Everything better than QC - CoD, Overwatch, BF... Doom '16, everything!

Now it's Quake for 50% with gameplay of Q3:A. Another Q3:A, "cut version" with hero shit inside. LoL. They changed nothing - this game made from Q3:A formula like a 100500 clones of Q3:A too.

i really enjoy playing quake champions. its not the game i hoped it would be, but im having a great time with it anyway. played 10x more quake than i did the year before qc. was kinda burned out from ql and (ranked) matchmaking makes finding good matches so much easier

The game itself hasn't progressed at all in 8 months (closed beta). It's the exact same thing, with a couple of new maps and characters. OW and PUBG progressed 5 times faster than QC.

Yea, it literally is the same exact game, and necessary elements for their desire of an esport worthy title are no where in sight. I don't understand with these elements so glaringly obvious in CS:GO and OW why they are struggling to make any progression with the game, unless like you said the budget literally does not exist anymore.

Yeah, I agree with all of you. The lack of progress specifically is most disheartening, even more so than the horrible performance / engine issues.

I like the core gameplay enough and the global gaming landscape is lame enough that I'd play it if the progress didn't look THAT glacial.

Yeah I completely agree with you. I could forgive the game issues as well if there was some hopeful progress, but now it really does seem like the game won't go much further :( I fucking hate the champions aspect anyway, but in my heart I still had hope for quake to live on.

Competitive Quake (as in, actual multiplayer 4v4 and 1v1) has always been marginalised. It has always been overshadowed by casual competitive titles such as CS and UT. It had a brief period of glorious popularity and then it fell apart once the money and hype dried up.

Much like the left wing of politics (not the socially liberal pro-business 'left' that we see in governments today but the traditional Left) the ideas are still there among the ruins and occasionally get bandied about by people like Thorin, 2GD and DDK, but at this point in time there is no impetus for a serious, intellectually and physically demanding competitive title. People are just culturally shallow nowadays.

Diabotical is promising and I hope that when it comes time for release, the devs will market it properly to at least garner some core playerbase that will stick with the game for years. But I can still see it appealing to the shallow, lazy, meme culture that seems to be on the surface of competitive multiplayer titles nowadays. I think Diabotical needs to be new and fresh, and needs to shape the culture rather than appeal to it. The way to do that is to create a game that is aesthetically meaningful rather than silly.

It's not about sport, it's about fun and tons of things made Quake to be Quake. Half of them is already ruined at another hand most people(and ex-Quakers too!) aroind the world don't need QL 2.0, it's only dream for few marginals, who want to play same shit after all these years. As pure cybersport, most difficult FPS, Quake is dead. Officially. I can't imagine how they(id) can change it by gamedesign decisions in gameplay of Q3:A - it's always should be worse than Q3:A or QL. Only way to return Quake 1 formula - duels on rocket launchers and rocketjumps. Everything else can get the fuck out or can be changed to everything. Get back lovecraftian atmosphere, fast speed and tons of blasts and rockets. It's only way to return Quake to be something not only for marginals, but for FPS genre fans around the world. IMHO.

roflmao ... *UT* ... that copy pasta Q3A game ... UT was *never* as big as quake ... I think Fatal1ty from Q3A played UT after it was announced by CPL and with even not one year of experience beat all those alltime UT pros ...

and UT is still deathmatch, so it is not entirely different compared to CS which has a very different teamplay mod ... I think QC still has a chance ...
they need to throw TDM away, which is basically FFA with 3 other players who steal Kills/Armor/Weapons from you, and also throw away Sacrifice, which basically feels like CTF, and there is a reason CTF was never big ... these mods are both good and real fun in clans, but not so much in casual pub play ... I personally can still play TDM and Sacrifice, but I can understand newer players feel attracted to different teamplay mods ...

in 2015 and 2016 I felt like I was finally free, then QC came out, and even tho I was complaining all the time I spent better part of 2017 playing and specating it, now that I feel like I am officially done I came to QL.

After such a long time I am having hard time to catch up with others so it's kind of uphill thing again, so I am glued to the screen for a second week now, I just hope that within a month I will finally satisfy myself and consider myself "done"

Havent touched quake in like 6+ months, and recently i switched from Windows to Linux so currently chances of playing QC are none.

I was one of the biggest quake fanboys and played it since 1996 but QC fiasco killed my FPS boner.
