I've had the same BT Infinity 52mb package for a year and it's prob the most stable connection I've had so far, I don't even recall a dc yet. Haven't had any download speed problems either that I have noticed.

I'm on hyperoptic as well, 50 a month for 1gb, but the best ISP you can get in the UK. Only a few developments across the country have it though afaik.

What speeds do you generally download at?

The limiting factor is where the file is hosted, but generally more than 5 MB/s

gigabit is overkill unless you're downloading 4k vids every day :\

It's good if you've got multiple devices constantly connected, so bandwidth yeah, speed not so much because there are so many variables that go in to downloading files etc.

It'll be good in the future for sure when things become standardized with 4K which is imho still a load of shit.

yep for sure, uploading is the biggest benefit - uploading videos to youtube @ 24mb/sec and for those who stream must be handy too!

you will have to start tip toeing around the internet with your static IP

otherwise the static IP will come in handy if you run a mediaserver to your phone and AIMP playlists etc

Yea DNS is great but without some Dynamic DNS service a change in your home IP address means your DNS is fucked.

Another vote for Zen here, have used them for years and only left to get Bethere. Since Bethere were bought by o2 then Sky or whatever I've moved back to Zen.

its pretty much impossible to mess up fibre, just make sure you get unlimited with no traffic management. upload higher than 5mb is also beneficial if you want to stream

Just changed from Sky Fibre to BT Fibre, just get yourself a custom router which will remove a majority of the limitations the main ISP's set, I currently get 50mb down and 20mb up. I have a custom VPN set up through the router directly so there's no limitations on browsing and downloads.

It's all fine and dandy getting these 3rd party providers that actually install their own infrastructure, it's just not viable in a lot of the small residential areas. You physically need to go out and get people to go online and sign a petition to say they want it.

Stay away from Virgin, probably the worst ISP in the UK, even with promises of their 200/200 connection, you get throttled so often it's unreal.

It's just so that you don't get the lovely blocked website message if you're doing any of the questionable things online like using streaming video services or torrents, it basically masks all your traffic as pure html based downloads, also stopping any dns leaks that the torrent apps use. So your ISP will see a massive volume of data used but not what it actually is.

If you don't want to get all hardware savvy you can just use PIA ( Private Internet Access ) You pay like £30 for a year, it's app based and what it does it creates another virtual LAN/WIFI connection and mask all info through there, it also helps with routing that a lot of people have, you can basically spoof the location of your connection which is pretty handy. A good place to check is www.ipleak.net

One thing I've just noticed on ipleak it shows 13 DNS servers, the first is the VPN im connected to and then the rest show BT IP's... is that fine?

You might have to tweak the PIA app a little bit, if you don't mind, can you post up some screenshots of that ipleak site?

+1 to avoiding Virgin, was paying for 200/50 (iirc?) but only got the full speed via wifi (?!), got about half (100/20, so slightly under half) when using an ethernet cable [edit: tried many different cables, probably should've tried a different router]. And even still there would be throttling as you mentioned.
On BT now same as you, getting about 75/20 for half the cost. No throttling, no downtime, and surprisingly even lower ping.

@OP: Hyperoptic is the best ISP in the UK but the last time I checked it was only available in certain buildings in the Greater London area, although that was over a year ago so they may have expanded somewhat. The best "commercial" ISPs are probably BT or Zen imo. Heard good things about Demon as an ISP but never tried them.

Yeah it is temperamental at the best of times, I mean sure if your playing at 4:00 Am on a Tuesday morning its probably going to be near perfect, but peak time stability is none existent...you know its bad when you ask someone why they are lagging and the average response is "its virgin media"

I'm sick to fucking death of Virgin. I warp EVERYWHERE. I cant play in any .de servers because of random huge spikes. .NL is a little more stable but still micro-warps.

UK servers i even warp. .fr is actually the best place for me to play.

Virgin is not prioritised for anyone who wants to game, unless you're jamming on a console then it's not worth being on them.

How's BT going for you Skint?

I've just cancelled Virgin and about to go with BT for the same package as you (52mb) for £35 a month.

Anyone have any better alternatives?

I've not had any problems at all and the speed has been as advertised, it's never dropped and I've had excellent service. Not played quake for a bit but had a good connection to European servers when I was playing.

So yeah it's been really good, good pings, solid connection and fast download speeds!
