At this point it wouldn't be driven by community anymore. Something like driven by organisation(s) like in pro sports, or scbw in korea rather than game publisher sounds more plausible.

Listen, it's very simple: Quake Champions brought in boatloads more moneys than it costed.

It was designed from the beginning to be a low budget cash grab, that's precisely why they went after cheap low buget Saber company to design the crappy engine, the characters have 0 originality and are straight lifted from other, much more successful games, the bots are dumber than 1999's quake ones, etc etc etc etc.

Despite all of this, tens of thousands of boomers and kids kept literally throwing moneys at their screens.

Every first week of the seasons you see people running around with level 100 vanities, got trought buying and spamming xp potions and straight levels.

When that wasn't possible, countless dumbasses were straight buying the crappiest, most jarrying vanities.

And for mthe first months QC used to cost 35 dollars, and tens of thosands of people paid that sum.

QC brought in millions, all for an engine developed by a z tier software house for pennies and kept running by a "team" composed by 10 people at most (lately likely 2 or 3).

Huge affair. Much more successfull games haven't been this remunerative.

Leveling to 100 takes A LOT of grinding. Like, a lot. And there are fucktards that for some reason seem to need to be at level 100 after a week, and so they buy ex potions like there's no tomorrow.

And they removed platinum rewards from the battlepass months ago, and even shards so now it's basically impossible to auto-sustain even by no lifing in the game.

Basically the only ones not paying moneys in the game were casuals, now that there's almost no casuals left almost all the players left are those paying for pink tutus

Ion' Fury's mouse input is very bad.

DUSK is very short, unchallenging, levels are all completed within minutes, secrets are found within seconds, and the movements are not so good, enemy variety is basically 5 enemies, PUs are useless, no replayability.

AMID EVIL and WRATH are ok.

Anything id Software releases gets free publicity because they're a well-known developer with an existing audience. Video game "journalists" will cover anything id Software announces because that's the home of Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake.

Indie studios on the other hand... It's very hard to get noticed today. So many games being released, so many high-quality indie games, too. The video game industry is bigger than music and movies combined. It's massive. And you have studios putting in hundreds of millions of dollars into games.

2GD actually did a fair job marketing Diabotical, imo. They had a successful Kickstarter (that's not too common) and they had huge streams on Twitch for dev updates. I saw 2,000+ viewers on 2GD's stream regularly. It doesn't seem like a lot, but when you compare that to other dev streams, it's quite good. Satisfactory, for instance, is pretty popular (7k concurrent players on Steam) and I've seen the dev streams at ~2k viewers. And most notably Epic picked up Diabotical as an exclusive, and provided funding for Diabotical dev. I can't imagine that's very common for indie games.

Reflex, sadly, never broke through the noise. Their KS failed, they went to early access Steam and had a fairly quick death despite having a really well-made engine with lots of modern features. They had a few somewhat big streamers play Reflex a bit (DraQu, ddk, Vo0, and some others), but not much else to spread the word.

DraQu is pretty popular in the FPS speedrunning community, though. He had a world record for DOOM (2016) at one point. He's got 53k subscribers on YouTube. Some of his YT vids have >1 million views. He's usually got ~200 viewers, but he's had >500 viewers, sometimes.

Vo0 also gets ~200 viewers on Twitch, but he doesn't stream very often anymore. He's sometimes had >500 viewers. DDK is probably the smallest streamer (~50 viewers, last time I checked), but he also has a wide audience since he plays a variety of games, casts for CSGO, and known in the AFPS community. Sometimes gets >200 viewers.

I think you're selling the beta period short. CDNthe3rd played this game for like over a week during beta and he averages several thousand viewers regularly. In addition, AceU (7-10k twitch regular) streamed it a few times. Even Shroud and XQC both played it. Even team Liquid's CSGO coach streamed it. To be honest I think they got more big name streamers/personalities to play this game, than id Soft paid for sponsored streams.

The game itself just didn't stick, the marketing itself was pretty good during beta, I remember people fighting for keys during the streams. People were actually selling the Beta keys themselves.

The fact that they shut the game down that long after Beta was a big factor I think, although there were likely others. It really killed the hype. I also think the lack of map variety for Team modes was lacking.

Dusk is an unfinished game. The single issue are the enemies. They are only a handful, one dinensional in every way, from single, lame sounds they make, to stupid ai that poses no challenge to horribly lackluster animation.

If someone would do proper enemies for Dusk as an add-on, it could actually become good.

And Amid Evil is piss easy on the highest difficulty setting whereas Dusk highest difficulty is "1 hit = death", which is fun.

It's a fantastic Build engine game. Maybe you're confused because it's 2.5d and it's impossible to look at your feet

Build engine has terrible mouse input, it's floaty and unprecise, this has been the case since Duke 3D and no engine fork managed to fix it contrary to GZDOOM, altho GZDOOM has very bad default mouse settings (accel and not 1:1 x,y axis sensi).

Unless they managed to fix it the last couple of years eDuke32 also has this mouse input delay. It has to do with how the engine queue the input after the frames and even tho I talked to ION FURY's devs and they managed to untie mouse input from frame rate in the last update it's still far from bearable for me :/

Anyway I have a few friends who played it and loved it almost as much as if it was two decades ago and playing that new Duke3d game. I'm sure it's a great game.

Xonotic and Warfork are also still kicking. Warfork is mostly more traditional but still has some nice additions to make it distinct like wall-jumping, as well as game modes like Bomb and Defuse. Xonotic is definitely a lot more adventurous but it still maintains the same core arena FPS gameplay.

Hellbound is like a $1 bargain, not worth playing since it's really 11 levels short, same 4-5 weapons as in the survival mode. and is 1 hour short. don't buy it unless you get it on sale for a really dirt cheap price.

I've been having a blast with Turbo Overkill over the last week. With double jump, double dash, and an amazing air control right out of the box, it plays better than Doom / Eternal and is very engaging.

Yeah, last difficulty is absolutely impossible for me. Couldn't beat the first level so I went straight to the middle one, got stuck at the boss for one straight hour, then repeated the same scenario with the second one but eventually had to pick the newbiest difficulty for that one single fight.

I guess I've lost it. Never liked bosses to begin with but I've never been reduced to the lowest possible setting before, even if it's just for that one fight.

According to Steam, I have sunk 30 hours. Jumping, dashing and sawing is so much fun in this game. Chainsaw might feel weird but turned out to be the fastest way of moving around, or at least key part of it.

Unfortunately, getting stuck in tight spaces is really fucking easy. Sometimes the game kills me after a few seconds but most of the time I simply reload. Happens a lot.

I don't even remember a boss, I spent most of my time on the final level which seems like a real full level from the game. Honestly after trying more boomer shooter demos over next fest I appreciate turbo overkill more, only CULTIC matches up to it's crispness

yep, played quite a lot of Quake custom singleplayer content.. and Dwell Ep.2 still impressed. they also updated the first episode with a final boss and tweaks/changes to the existing maps.
I feel like I owe them money.. they put so much effort into this.

Yeah, it's insane what value you get if you play the popular community maps! Also you can play some maps in short amount of time, instead of playing these games that required to invest 50+ hours

brutal fate from the brutal doom guy is definetly something to watch out for, he will definitely get the weapons and satisfaction to use them right, but still not sure if he can bring some variety into the mix ... looks a bit too much like doom, but his brutal doom episode was still quite good and brought a lot of new stuff, I think probability is high this guy gets most stuff right with brutal fate ..., I think I gonna buy that game, also as a thank you for brutal doom

Also, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin (popular in the comments) is on my Steam wishlist for FIVE YEARS and they still haven't released it.

I'm not buying Early Access crap anymore, especially the "Quake 1 successor" that doesn't have a save game "feature" (maybe it does by now, I haven't checked in 5 years, waiting for a release to check whether it's for me).

So much for booming :) Good thing Quake and Quake 2 got excellent remasters, otherwise I'd have nothing new to play since Ion Fury :(

Q1 + Q2 remaster r rly better than most thought/hoped

they kinda misplayed their hand with wrath, they are now a bit in the duke nukem forever territory, even if they release the game very soon (according to the steam page they are finalizing it for release, that was already 6 weeks ago) ... it will always be overshadowed by the bad project management and the long wait for the game ...

With the Q remasters, they did a lot of generous things, 2 official mission packs for free and a whole new episode each with a lot of quality of life enhancements, and they dont even ask a lot of money for it, if you owned the original on steam u get it all for free ... they did everything right there ... now if only super metroid would get a remaster from nintendo similar to this ... :-)

Yeah, they really took care of PCMR. I, of course, have all the Quakes on CDs/DVDs and would never play the original versions (from Steam/GOG/BNL) when stuff like FTEQW exists. But then they gave them away for free on BNL (for 20th anniversary of each one IIRC) for anyone logged in, basically, then released the remasters (for 25th anniversary of each) as simple updates, in the meantime shutting down BNL and migrating everyone's games to Steam. So I got both for free in the end!

I think releasing it as an update to few hundred old schoolers like us doesn't even register as a monetary cost, but was very good PR.

This is how you release a Quake (or Doom for that matter) - first make a good game, then let us old farts spread the word all around the place. If only Tim understood this.

There is a mod out there for the old Doom 2 game called *BLOOM* ...
it mixes Blood with Doom and is really great, especially the monsters, but also the level design ... can only recommend this mod, can be played through in a one nighter, it already released 1-2 years ago, but only found out now about it, still easily best game this year for me :-)

HROT is an absolute blast! Like DUSK but with good level design, atmosphere, enemy designs, backstory, slapstick self-awareness and so on. It completely shits on DUSK in every regard of 'retro quake shooter'.
10/10 game already, and more episodes are on the way.

CULTIC is like the Blood you always wanted. None of the weird or childish, all of the 2D horror athmosphere. Loads of fun, just a great game as well.

Graven is... pretty meh. Not really worth it unfortunately.

CULTIC fucking rules, that and turbo overkill are my favorite of the current crop of boomer shooters

Selaco released yesterday, pretty good indie boomer shooter in cyberpunk neon settings.

So what is a "boomer" shooter to begin it...
Is a "kill-a-thon" with 90's graphics slapped on?
Is a "arena-shooter" with elements from Unreal and Quake?
Is a Quake-1 clone with very limited graphics and maps? Chasm The Rift anyone?
Is a Doom-clone with hyper-realistic 2d elements in a 3D world?

Waaaaay many...

I don't know anymore...
In the boomer days, there's games like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Quake, etceterá.
All of those games follow the same line of Single player shooters with some complexity in their levels (or maps) a little of puzzling and a good variety of enemies, amazing weaponary and some-what-ok sound.

But in those "boomer" shooters of today, is all about killing a fucking thon of enemies performing various tricks like 360 and shit, level can be a untextured box and still will be ok. Tons of weapons who are forgettable in most cases, same shotgun-double shotgun, rocket launcher, plasma... Puzzles? fuck that.

People forget how those games were played on the first time, Keyboard or fucking gigantic Joysticks, lol.
Then, Optical technology landed, and it changed everything...

Is like the same thing about PS1 graphics, indie developers of today don't know how PS1 graphic were handled and I only see ugly, compressed textures.

Like they never taste real PS1 graphics to get a gasp of what those graphics looked back in the day, fucking Crash, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, plenty of good games to know how a good PS1 graphic looked but no... let's make the same cube-oriented low compressed ugly fucking models and call them "PS1 graphics"

This is my rant of today, I'm just fucking tired of indie developers just doing the same shit over and over again, the same happens with 8-bit games, It just take a good game to take-off like Shovel Knight to spawn a hundred clones.

PS1 is basically the very first generation of 3D games and the graphics suck ass, just like the first generation of 2D games of whatever system that was, you can only look at games like Pong or Space Invaders for historical reasons ... boomer pixels basically reference the 2D Pixel Graphics on Super Nintendo or late Arcade Machines ... and Doom and Duke Nukem are not real 3D games, they still use 2D sprites, so you have to take something like Quake where PS1 was not powerful enough (even if there might be a port for it on PS1, I don't think it compares to the PC Quake) ... a proper Boomer shooters orientates itself to GL Quake with high resolution textures and improved textures on enemy models, so basically what community mods achieved or what was done in the Quake Remaster.
TLDR:
Boomer 2D Graphics -> SNES or Late Arcade
Boomer 3D Graphics -> Quake Remaster or Duke Nukem 3D

my company is working on the programming for a game called bc piezophile. it's not a boomer shooter. it's more like a very methodical precision mech platformer. we released a demo for the current steam nextfest. it's getting mixed responses from people on /v/. it clicks for some people, but some other people are crying about the controls. i think the input system is pretty unique & rewarding, it's just different and takes some time to understand.

some people are complaining that there isn't much direction so it's hard to figure out what to do. i played through the demo level for the first time this morning and understand and agree with that. however, the gameplay itself was satisfying.

I came back to say how disappointed I am in Amid Evil, now that I played through.

It's a complete snoozefest. All enemies just run at you in a straight line. The formula is as follows:

-Enter room
-Enemies run an you
-+back and kill
-Repeat 10000 times

Whoever hyped this up is a moron.
