QL feels perfect to me.

IS there some must have changes/tweaks need to be done? I mean WTF I have 9900K@RTX3090@240Hz and how is it stutters? fps cap are on 250.

If it stutters, com_idlesleep 0, this re-enables a busy loop (technically spins up 100% on a core until it's time to process another frame) instead of actually going to sleep (for a precalculated time, until it's time for another frame). It's a bug/incompatibility affecting like half the people.

Last I checked, CPMA didn't sleep either.

It's a good thing that QL tried to reduce power requirements of the game, but something went wrong in the implementation and depending on your system, it might sleep for slightly longer than necessary, and not always by the same amount, causing visible judder. Simply disable that feature if it doesn't work for you.

Use evil cfg and just change the visuals and mouse settings to suit your needs. Game runs like crap on most other CFGs

might not work but try disabling threaded optimization in nvidia settings. it worked for me the last time i played.

delete your old configs

type into console /cvar_restart
then /vid_restart

and then set all ur setting manually

I have never been able to get Quake Live to feel ’right’ or ‘good’ (across different hardware and versions of the client). It literally killed the game for me and I stopped playing shortly after QL.

I can load up a Quake 3 client (e.g. cnq3) and it feels great out of the box but no amount of tweaking makes Quake Live feel good. It feels like a cheap rip-off of Q3A.

The Q3/L/C community really needs to abandon the closed sourced QL/QC and invest all its efforts into a client like cnq3, a competitive mod like cpma and, frankly, asset replacement so the whole thing can be completely free and open source.

to answer op, i've done two things and haven't experienced much trouble with ql

1. i recently started using cg_errordecay 0. my ignorant understanding is that this command controls the maximum amount of time in ms to interpolate between erroneous (mismatched?) client and server states. the default is 100ms, so if your client predicts the position of something somewhere, but the server overrules it, the client will smooth its state to the authoritative state. i played around with this on a server after i discovered it. at the default value, 100, when i would jump and land, everything seemed to be in slow motion, and it was almost like my player model sank into the floor a little. after setting to 0, movement felt like i was on a listen server.

2. i also set com_idlesleep 0. this command was allegedly created for windows xp computers, because there were apparently some performance problems with cpu cores 'idling' between frames (essentially running at lower voltage to save power when not needed). i guess the implementation is bad or something, because before setting it to 0 i was getting 240-250fps. after setting it to 0, i get 250fps constant.

3. cg_predictlocalrailshots 0. it seems like this has reduced the number of 'through rails' that i experience.

4. cg_predictitems 0. some people complain endlessly about how they picked up an item before they died, but the item pickup didn't register. i guess they don't realize that their client 'predicted' the pickup by playing the pickup sound instantly, but they actually died on the server before getting the item. it's kind of annoying to experience, even knowing it's just inherent to communications, so i've disable item prediction and haven't noticed this happening.

these settings seem to have improved my ql experience immensely. i sort of wonder if cg_errordecay was patched in from enemy territory or something, and it was just not done very well, such that there's some buggy behavior left over. i haven't noticed any particularly bad jittery behavior of models since changing it.

one thing i'm still trying to figure out is /writeconfig autoexec.cfg will write almost every cvar i have set, except for r_lightmap 1 & cg_errordecay 0. i've tried deleting all my configs, disabling cloud saves, and something else, i'm sure. at this point i just have to add them to my autoexec manually every time i save it in game.

oh, another thing i'm trying to figure out is how to lower the opacity of the spotlights in various maps. there are two in t7 (by gl & by lg/mh), and there are some in toxicity (one by lg/ya). they're a bit difficult to see through.

But sure, if the competitive quake community just want to stick with half-arsed, half-finished versions of Q3/L/C that the development company has long since abandoned rather than take control of their own destiny then that’s up to them 🤷

What is OpenArena?
OpenArena is an open-source content package for Quake III Arena licensed under the GPL, effectively creating a free stand-alone game. You do not need Quake III Arena to play this game.

that is what open arena is. cpm is closed source, btw. so your desire to abandon 'closed ql/qc' doesn't even make sense.

You're a funny person aren't you... The sentence construction is pretty clear with what it is saying (create independent client and assets for the specific purpose of the community taking control of competitive Q3/QL/QC).

If the community wants to build this on top of Open Area... sure... but that project really isn't particularly useful for this purpose (not least because the project itself seems like it has been dead for many years).

Wait, what? OA is specifically a set of open source licenced assets to be used as drop-in replacements for Q3's proprietary ones. And it's not "dead", it's complete.

You can just drop those into CPMA and the only things left to open is CPMA code and CPMA map pack. Boom, you have a truly open source CPMA.

I’ll reiterate my suggestion though:

The competitive Q3/QL/QC community(ies) should abandon the closed sourced abandonware versions of the games in favour of putting their efforts behind a competitive focussed open sourced project.

That way they won’t be reliant on the whims of mega corporations like Microsoft/Bethesda/id or face a situation like the various Unreal Tournament communities are (where the products have been pulled from purchase and master servers shutdown etc.).

Firstly, that isn’t what Open Arena is. I didn’t ask for just a random collection of open source assets lol…

Secondly, the context for this statement is that we have a “project” attempting to revive QL, including reskinning maps etc. This version of the game is effectively abandonware, has a minor paywall, a poor new user experience, doesn’t have feature parity with even OSP and plenty of other issues (i.e some people just cant get it to feel right, ever).

It's about to stop being abandonware once Id release the bloated cross-platform remaster for Quake 3, so you can crush the noobs once again like in 1999.

They already have, it's called ratmod and it's still regularly updated. As you can imagine it's not very populated but they have an active CA server in the US. It's VQL physics so I'm not a regular. It does have cpm physics which I mess around with offline with bots. They're better than stock q3 bots and they play ctf well, which cpma bots don't.

Download open arena, download oa-ioquake3, join an /N/ server, and it will automatically download the ratmod pk3s/gpl texture packs.

Aside from the weapon models not looking the best this is a completely modern way to play q3 with VQL physics and is very feature rich.

Offhand grapple is not in the game, but because it's open source I was able to find the code on an old archived website and implemented it myself. I also have the q3 code for tiered cpm style armors that I might implement if I can get the bots to prioritize armors better.

For ctf the bots by default are all on defense so hit escape, team orders, I am the leader, then put a bot or 2 on offense depending on what role you want to play.

Thanks a ton, I'll try these. Been trying to get back into QL after years, and it feels pretty bad, players warping around like crazy, despite good pings, rails going straight through enemies etc. I hope these commands improve my experience.

Wow, yes. But on top of that, when I think back, that texture/color combo strikes me as distinctively quakelive. Is it just me? I have not played ql for quite a while.

I assumed it was re-used Team Arena/Dreamcast stuff.

Like the bounce pad is this super short non-Q3 styled one and it’s just weird.

Compared to cpm4 the textures have that "more detail is more" feel to me. cpm4 was never a looker, but seems much more "quiet" than the ql one. Ironically I probably need picmip 5 for ql more than for q3. cpm4a just looks pretty and quiet, no matter the picmip.

Quake Live's version of Realm of Steel Rats was done by Pawel "ShadoW" Chrapka, who was responsible for a lot of new maps and visual do-overs of existing maps from late 2010 to around 2011. The texture set is basically just QL's industrial/urban textures.

Personally I think the QL version looks much, much better than the CPM version. The jump pad being replaced with an accel pad makes mechanical sense because it is launching you a fair amount forward and not just upward (and the original didn't even use a proper bounce pad texture, because reasons). And the rusty orange actually mixes well with the green-ish oxidized copper and the green slime. And if anything I think the QL version is more "quiet" and consistent than the original.

Well more power to you, but it's awful to me, and probably the majority of players, seeing how I don't remember ever playing cpm3/cpm4 when the a versions were out. And not that I care about the jump pad, but it makes more sense as the original, where the jump pad slopes downward, because you gain mostly vertical and minimal horizontal speed, i.e. you are jumping more than being launched forward.
