Well you didn't say that above :). Bandwidth does cost real money to a server host though. You may be paying your ISP for your broadband, but 0% of that money is going to Barrysworld.
However I agree, it would be much better for everyone if high speeds could be provided without any subscription. We've avoided most of the annoying banners and pop-ups in the past but we'll need to do some sort of advertising in the future to cover the hosting costs - then we can probably afford the bandwidth for people to download.
oh ya i know about bandwidth costs, but this is the first free d/l site ive seen w/ 12kb/s lol...most ive seen are capped @ 100 kb/s or not capped at all..
i dont really mind, i hardly d/l anything off this site...but when i see a demo i want, or something like this... i want it but the speed sucks :(
guess im just spoiled by broadband :o
have you guys ever considered putting up a paypal donations thing? i havnt seen one on this site, but im sure people would pitch in come cash...
Most files that are hosted on ESR are pretty small. A file of 10 Mb is large. I do agree 12 kb/s would be annoying if it was larger files.
Anyway. ESR has a lot of traffic each month and BW hosts it for free, in exchange for a banner. They are definately more than generous to us on the whole.
I mean demos with such rail frags like the one in this clip :).
I didn't upload it just because it is prozac who made that shot, but because it is a crazy shot. I would have uploaded a clip featuring an unknown player too if there was any.
There were also many guys asking for this clip after watching ESR uncut, there is even a thread in the ESR Q3 forum about this frag.
And people say the CS hitboxes are fucked up. This type of frag is only possible because the Quake 3 hitbox is larger than most of the character models. So you can actually shoot slightly to the left and right of Sarge yet still score a hit. You can also hit what appears to be thin air beneath his feet after he's jumped; even though the animation displays Sarge pulling his legs up, the hit box is not altered to accompany this visual effect and so frags can still be made by shooting at what appears to be nothing. This is probably what happened in the match featured.
The main problem of the hitboxes in Q3 is that the animation of the model does move the model up/down for jumps etc, although Q3 also moves the model up/down, thus the model goes up twice as high as the hitbox. At least this is what I recall from what I've read about it.
About the hitbox beeing a bit larger than some models and thicker than others, well, it's plain normal.
The hitbox in Q3 has consistant dimensions whatever the model, this prevents players using Bones to have an advantage over players using Keel, for example. Else you would have every experienced players using Bones, which would be sad, and newbies using tankjr would be hit 2 or 3 times easier... Not to talk about dodging skills. :)
\cg_enemymodel would have made it even worse of course (newbies not knowing it, leet players all using Bones and cg_enemymodel TankJR... :)
Maybe ID should have stuck with models that all fitted the hitbox's dimensions, but this would have been less fun imo, I think they made a good decision by making different fun models and a single consistant hitbox for every model.
Yes i do agree that it was a good decision by id, one of the most striking things when first playing Quake 3 is the diversity and imagination of the models they created. The models are almost all very unrepresentative of the hitbox though, which is a problem especially pertinent for competitive gaming. It may have been a good idea if, shortly after Quake 3's release, OSP or CPMA created a few models that were tailored exactly to fit the hittable area.
"So you can actually shoot slightly to the left and right of Sarge yet still score a hit."
After what I have heard, Sarge is the _only_ model who's equally big to the 'hitbox versus model'-issue. In other words,
"sarges model=the hitbox in q3" But I guess that's wrong then.
do so if you wish... then make sure your topic says "impoissble rail by cooller or something" and watch people download it.. else not many will i bet :) though i will :P :P
wow is THIS that famous frag?
when he explained it i tought he dropped from the Rail to down sg & immediatly railed his feet when going up the stairs :/
looks like a MISS more then a hit.. this usually happens with ppl who have a bit high sensitivity or use flick shots.. ALOT OF FLICK SHOTS.. FUCKING FLICK SHOTS HAVE RUINED QUAKE 3..
