cable modem nodes are often subjet to broadcast flood from other cable modems. the sharing of your line up to a point is what causes this.

It could be other BY customers with a virus scanning your pc (basiclaly scanning BY IP ranges).

I get that a lot on NTL. I can monitor it because my router is just a linux box so I can run decent diagnostics easily.

It sucks up your bandwith and causes ping spikes, theres nothing you can do about it except complain to the ISP.

A firewall wont prevent the bandwidth usage, the router still has the handle an incoming request even if it just drops it.

yer i think that'll probably be the best option, but i'm gonna have to wait till my dad can give the 'go ahead'. till then i'm stuck with unplayable blueyonder.

Get on to BY dreg, its their problem get them to sort it.

Its area over subscription. the second hop is your UBR (universal broadband router) which all modems connect to in your area.

So if your UBR is over subscribed then your ping spikes randomly like that.

If you have a motorola surfboard you can change your upstream channel which hopefully would stick you onto a less populated one resulting in lower pings.

I can see that you may have some knowledge and are trying to speak in readable terms, but if that's the case, you still need to go learn alot more. the only thing you need to 'change' your upstream channel is reboot the device until it's grabbed an alternate one. however, in HFC topology, cable modem deployments have area-specific channels that are used to aggregate connections. you cannot simply 'hop over' as if this is some sort of spread spectrum wireless technology, unless they have specifically designated alternate channels for this broadcast-node.

dreg, if by gateway you mean a 'home router device' of sorts, and assuming you're on a cable modem, the first hop can be any of three things: your 'router,' your modem, or the gateway at your ISP. typically most of your 'home routers' will act transparently unless you really know what you're doing and have things set otherwise. typically, again, your modem will not retain an IP address, but rather 'bridge' the connection between the CMTS and the CPE, thus, the first hop is usually not your modem, either. in this case, however, if you're having millisecond replies, it is probably some device internal to your network. but it is obvious that the second device in your path is a part of your ISP's network, 'UBR aggregation' which is a common problem that the kids who know nothing keep slinging around. fact of the matter is, the device is called a CMTS, not a UBR. UBR is a product line from Cisco Systems. any case, these devices do not 'overload,' they are merely MUX systems (typically). this basically means that any aggregation issues are area-centric and is probably due to overload of your broadcast node, not your CMTS or other head-end devices. this has always been the case with cable modems, and now that the internet is so much larger, oversubscribing is commonplace. I'm willing to bet that that is the case, and I'm doubting there's much you can do about it unless you want to bitch... alot.. a whole lot.

that's quite informative thanks :) altho i still don't have much of a clue of what most of that stuff means, (even tho u explained it ;)), but i'll try to learn about this stuff.my ping has flattened out for today, but on most days it's still pretty shitty.

dreg just ingore him, if you do get one of these modems you'l definatly be able to change upstream and obtain better pings.

I've done it, people in DC do it, and many other people which I've told about this can do it.
