I suggest, u all go buy pk, or w8 for the mp demo. It has a good concept, qw style. nice breath for fresh air, with lot's of action and all projectile based weapons, bunnyhopping etc.

currently there is one good map (good asin: REALLY good) but the game needs tweaks, and there is the developing crew of pk working on. so I suggest yall give pk a try

DMM3 is used in 1on1 now, like in QW. So that problem's been reduced a bit. :)

Calling this fun in comparison to QW which btw you can get FOR FREE now is like calling paying to kick a rock around with your bare feet fun in comparison to playing with a football which is sitting at the side of the road waiting for you.

I think it's more like kicking a tennis ball around with shoes, compared to QW being kicking a football around with shoes, and other FPS games being the rock with shoes (Q3), or rock with bare feet (UT series), or brick with bare feet (CS). :P

oh and you have to pay for the rock, and you need to buy really expensive shoes for some of the games, and do you buy nvidia or ati laces?

Sure it has potential, but this was already sure after the alpha! PK now (version 1.15) is still a beta to me, and totally unplayable with pings > 50... many people thought that PK might be the next big duel game (like I did), and all of those must be very disappointed with the retail. There's still so much work to do for DC... would have been smarter to delay the game again until it's finished.. or simply run a mptest :/

well i think PK just wont do it. Its not a huge seller, and a bunch of guys playing it serious wont make it big. Quake 3 got so big because it had the name. Counter strike got so big because it was a gratis mod for one of the best sold games ever. Plus it's newbee friendly.

yes, u all are right, but cs was small till 1.0 or so. i mean, pk can grow bigger, even after 6 months or so, when some good 'osp style' changes will take place. The concept there is now is good, and should be appreciated, since not lots of games nowadays are like the good old qw. Now it is not too good , but it's fun to play, and it's fast. The waiting is for mapeditors so we can have more than just 2 duel maps. I'd rather see a large pk community than a large cs one..

I needed a fresh game, cos i got bored of q3 and cpma. So i thought pk might be enjoyfull. The developers really listen to the community, especially on #painkiller.euro (quakenet), where buglists, and feature requests are continuously submitted to the developers. So if you want a game with a good approach towards gameplay, and you want to play something diff than q3/qw, but NOT an UT game, i'd suggest u give it a try. Atleast stand OPEN for it, since new fast mp games are hardly produced. That's why we should give the games with such a hardcore 1v1/tdm concept a boost by forming a decent community, along with fansites, bugreport forums etc. etc.

Furthermore, if u are immediatly acting negative towards such developings, concepts like this wont be made anymore, and all games that come on the market are going to be realism shooters. I allready bought pk, to be part of the community and help the game to evolve, like q3 is evolved over the years (with osp and good maps etc.).

This game doestn come from a big company as ID, and is made by qw'ers and some others. I suggest we give the game a chance, and not only for this short time period, but i suggest we look further than that, and see that the game has a good 1v1/tdm potential. This potential should evolve in solid, balanced, and superfast gameplay. To get to this point, we need some dedication, and we need to stand positive to such games.

oh and ps: the singleplayer is worth a try too!:P

CS grew so big in large part because it is free. Many people had Half-Life already, and if a friend wanted to show them CS, they could just install for them on the spot.

True that Starcraft (and WC3 etc...) aren't newbie friendly at all, but then, the sheer amount of newbies/casual players who play those games make up for that. Don't newbies only ever play newbies in that game, or people with similar skill play each other?

In FPS games the audience isnt big enough for that, pro players need to play for fun/practice too, so often play publics and rape everyone, because the playerbase isn't big enough to segregate people based on skill as effectively as SC etc (thats my understanding of it anyways).

Don't think I said that very well, but basically, if everyone played ANY game, it would be very newbie friendly because the sheer size of the playerbase would ensure that people were usually always finding games against people of similar skill.

both cs and sc have alot of cheaters too. map hack makes it newbie friendly...

no, the point is that this game's gameplay is mainly around a solid map control and rl & cg (alt fire rl = chaingun?) and hasn't more balanced weapons like i.e. q3. and there's nothing "wrong" with that. in tdm i belive sg and other weapons will be usefull but in 1v1 it will be just like in qw (get rl and control the map). imo
i haven't seen any demos on maps where lg is and i (yet) can't play the game online, but if the lg is powerfull and if they make the sg a little more powerfull then this game will be suitable for tdm. as for 1v1 it already is :)

i think that chaingun 'lockdown' effect should be removed.. it just holds them still almost

Your argument doesn't make any sense at all. Are you seriously suggesting that a game has to be better than Q1 in order to be good, that people 'expect' every new game to be better than QW. If so, then why have none come close?

There are more than 2 weapons in PK, they are not always of use however, but the same is true in QW, and that is a key feature of the gameplay.

However, I will concede that PK needs some adjustment in that area, as currently the top 2 weapons sit on the same gun, and certain other weapons are near useless.

it covers that problem more or less, when u find the rl/cg it only has ammo of one type, u pick it up with rockets or bullets, and then u have to find ammo of the other type

On the duel maps both RL's come with 5 rockets, and you have to pickup the chaingun ammo.

Those 5 rockets go very fast in PK when you're not in control and have just picked up an RL, to avoid being spawn raped. So you have to get more ammo before being able to take control.

With dmm3 preventing your enemy from getting ammo is a significant part of 1on1, chain ammo anyways, although it depends on map design because on some maps the ammo is spread out and easy to get hold of.

Now I be honest aftre viewing the first 30 seconds of this demo I said to my self-
"I getting this game!!!"

Pain Killer have my money worth already, I been waiting for a game like Q3 (yes I can just stick to Q3...) for ages I tried Ut2k3 then 4 tis boring and just aint got that "HUMPF" i seek for.

THis game I can tell straight away has what I want, the speed, the jumping, the aim just well everything.
Bright models seem abit OTT tbh but still better than what EPic nob rots do.
I think that this game deserves alot more credit than given and alot more demos like this to promote it.

My questions though are Why just 2 guns? and I read only 1 good Duel map the rest suck Pure donkey Cock and another thing I heard was the game is very buggy and unstable......

I enjoyed the basic movement and air control of the game but I didn't see much of the speed/bunny jumping. How come it wasn't used?

there was quite some bunny hopping, it might not be that obvious because you dont have to make this waving movement in pk

he does, he is jumping all the time, that aint walking, the map is bigger than u have in mind:D i suggest try the mp demo that comes out soon. I think soon there will be real movies that show pk better. This one is from a demo and directly handled by fraps, and put online. Anyway, good movies will come, in better quality. Giving a good opinion by using a vid in low quality of a game where u dont know the map is not too ez. Dont see this as a promotion video. Instead give the game a try by buying it, or by downing the mp demo when that one comes out.

Great idea...... but very boring demo to choose to show people the gameplay of PK. Although maybe the quality made the demo seem worse than it really was.

I think this should be taken down and replaced with a movie of a player like Vo0, in better quality.

About some of the criticisms raised here: the jump sounds dont come out on movies for some reason, so you dont get the right 'feel' of the bunnyhopping, and the other weapons do have their place, but mostly it is only the main 3 RL/CG/GL, but SG and Stake are used often as well by the more well-rounded players.

I never said anything about the general skill of the player, I was talking merely about the game being a poor representation of PK gameplay. Xhep is a good player anyways I agree, but I personally don't think he is on the same level as Vo0.

Just from looking in the demo (granted it was hard to see with such low quality) I think he made quite a few mistakes, and messed up the movement often, something which you rarely see Vo0 do. Just my $0.02.

I guess we'll see soon enough anyways, noone knows how good anyone really is in PK because it's early days yet. :)

Vo0 is better.. he won most if not all duels vs xhep, but xhep dont get raped. I think Vo0 is top pk player along with some others in europe.

dont see this movie as a promotion video. It's more meant as a post of 'the first pk duel movie' like there was a first q3 one long ago.

In other words, dont say: 'repetetive, sux same weap bla bla' all the time, just play it a bit ( i suggest w8 till the mp demo is out, or just already buy it)

the game needs tweaking, of course, but then it can be compared best to QW (according to what u can do, the 'one weap is strong' theory etc.)
maps are getting reviewed on item placement by the community and are discussed on forums etc. The whole community respects that the creators of this games were not able to fix this mp part right away. It was undone when the game came out (the game has a big singleplayer part, which is a bit serious sam style). The sp was initially focused on when they made it. They had to release the game on some certain date, because of contract or whatever. my point here is that the mp was not complete yet, and by using the community as feedback source they are trying patch by patch to finish it. Playing pk duels and tdm games are fun, altho u see things that are still imbalanced. But for me it is not a reason to throw away a game immediatly. I have fun when playing, and ofcourse I see that it would be more fun after tweaks. So all i wanna say is that this game has potential, and the mp part is 'under development, but still fun to play as it is now'

I have my fun in playing pk now, and i know it will get better and better.... That's also something that motivates me to play this game.

Saying: 'it sux' is easy, but a game by gamers, based on a gameplay concept that not anyone likes (not some realism shooter but a qw style, fastpaced spawngame) deserves atleast respect from us gamers. I dont think we should flame this like some of u peeps are doing now, and imo too much at forehand. If you do not like it, fine, but atleast have respect for the things this dev team is trying to make.

Looks pretty decent, must say I'm impressed by the pace.
But I do think it's a major problem that only one/two weapons are useful at all. I'm sure lots of UT'ers and Quakers would fancy a little bit more depth in the game than instagib-PK shows right now.

well the concept stays that there is one 'mother of all weaps' like in qw. True it is now a bit TOO heavy all of it, but the splash dmg of the rockets are reduced in new patch allready. it's harder to hit with a rock than in qw . 2nd: the chaingun is really devastating, it should be a bit nerfed, but there is looked at. The pace is very nice, when u play it u notice that everything is fast. With those two things in mind u have a fast paced shooter already. In tdm u got 2 sorts of powerups added to that. The waiting is for good maps, but a map making tool will be out next patch. Then the ommunity can grow, and we get maps that will suit the pk gameplay better.

Now, the map of the vid, is the only REAL good map, and eventho it's really good , some spawntimes can be increased a bit imho. but such tweaks are heavily discussed in #painkiller.euro, quakenet by players and suggestions and bugs go via www.pkeuro.com, so that the developers know what is needed, and know what to do to make the game better.


oh and the weaps are all devastating when meeting a fresh spawned player, but once he has a gold armor (is RA in quake) or a silver armor, u really need 3 - 4 rockets to kill the player. With armor , u really need to do things to kill an enemy

I did notice that a player with 100 hp & no armor was pretty easy to kill, which is very good imo.

But I don't really think it's an excuse to say that just because qw was a 1-weapon game, it is justified for PK to be the same. Keep in mind that qw is very, very old and was the first (I think?) reasonable competitive fps. People are right to expect a bit more nowadays. I played qw a bit and had great fun, but imo its strength was movement, not its weapon balance.

Especially since PK has instant weapon switch I think it's a waste that there aren't at least 3 weapon (combinations) to be used in a duel. For a quaker it must be reasonably boring, but being used to UT/UT2k3 myself it's unthinkable to play the game without switching weapons.

I agree that the instant weapon switch in PK isn't utilised fully, the other weapons are usable, but perhaps not often enough (or not yet anyways).

I think the best option for improving the gameplay would be to simply switch the Chaingun & LG damage&knockback, making the chaingun more like a machinegun, and the LG like a QW style LG. Then adding the LG into maps adding another element of map control.

no stakegun does lots of dmg. railgun leads to camping long distance play. The concept pk has, is projectile based weaps, which leads to upclose battles: rl fights, shotgun fights etc.

imo the railgun is what makes q3 so bad nowerdays with the great aiming skills in mind. railgun makes a game campy and newby-friendly at the same time. imo one of the best things in pk is the fact it has NO railgun!

ps: stakegun is far from weak. but the player in this demo failed to stakegun Xhep down after a spawn altho he could have done. i am convinced stakegun skills will improve a lot and you can break every enemy down with 2 hits.

it will be better... the game is really changin a lot as patches come. This is not a final state of the game, and weapon balance will be different. the speed and faced paced action is something u'd feel urself in this game. That's why i 'm slightly against such a post on this site, since i know lots of ppl judge too much on forehand, without having pld the game. (opinions based on a low res vid can not be so indepth, so ppl saying 'map sux' shouldnt be posting here on this site, since they dont understand anything of fastpaced fps games, and judge way too early. The map showed is really good, altho some chain ammo boxes should be removed tho..)

Look, stake gun is important part of the game already, even if you spawn with it, its still useable. You have stakes and granades, which are importent part of gameplay. Like if you go trough tele and wait for him with stake and shot him, then back off, you really take half his life even if he has 200 200. And the granades are of course like in q3, onli more dangerus and more random :o

And as for railgun, they dont like railgun. Easy as that. :)

So you have 4 weapons, wich is quite alot. And you have the sg, wich noone has enough skill to use yet (noone knows when he has low hp). And you have the LG wich isnt in any of the 1v1 maps, and i think, need some tweaking.

SG is used fairly often & effectively by certain players, and is very powerful with good aim. We'll see this more as time goes by I'm sure..

airrox are made, quite alot actually. Every q3 duel has an airrox in it? no.. There are lots of spectacular frags, but no1 has made a gameplay/fragfeast movie yet.

The video isn't too bad, but it does give the impression there aren't that many weapons in the game. Also, was the guy fighting a player, or a red mass? Brightskins, sheesh... :)

In fact more and more players dont even know qw. And of course we'd get owned badly if we try it, but that's idem for warcraft , starcraft, ut or any other game. I see desperation in all these 'qw is better' comments, trying to get new blood to it. And yes , they should have worked a lot more on the multiplayer before releasing painkiller. But that is not how it turned out. You can whine forever about it or move on . The 1.15 patch has solved a lot (not everything) , the mouselagfix works well. CD-roms not working? Blame safedisk! The first months I played q3 I had 20fps , dropping to 7fps in an overcrowded CA server. It felt awful. But as most of us know: The better your system is, the better the game feels. Same for Painkiller

all this "qw is better than anything else" really gets annoying. the only thing why qw is so famous is because it was the first real good game of that type but its far from being an excellent game nowerdays! its physics may own but the weapons make it a spawnrape game which nobody would except playing if it would be released today. you all know im right with that. all quake games after it were improvements to it weapon-wise with q3 at the top, although physics may be easier and rail is overpowered nowerdays. it looks like some ppl have just lost their train to learn new great games and thus stick to good ol' qw where they at least can own some with a bit of luck. and the fact that they always have to put out how good qw is and how shit other games are looks like a try to convince themselves again and again.

well after playing for like 1 year on 56K you'll manage to use the railgun quite decent afterall... I actucally owned a couple of guys on 10mbit @ q3tourney4 back in the 1.17 days.

as said above the game only really seemed to consist of a 2 weapon war, item timing didnt seem all too crucial, the map seemed a bit dull, overall it wasnt very exciting to watch. it seemed like the game is trying to bring back what qw was without adding anything to it, so it comes out looking like a rehash of an old game with updated graphics.

i would say item-timing and mapcontrol decided this match...

true, without armor ur nothing, a noob can kill a skilled player then.. But the spawntime of the Gold Armor in this map is a bit too low. but game will be tweaked alot. It allready made some drastic changes in the last patch, and it's far from over.

I can't understand ppl rating higher than 6/7. The quality is crap, the demo show game's big lacks (1 weap sided etc)... As I said before, all this propaganda around pk show how ppl wait for a new game. PK is not so bad yes, not good too for sure, but 1 thing is sure : it doesn't deserve so much blindy attention.

I'm hoping some great change from the 1.2 patch anyway...

i think the map is quite good, and the 2 weapon thing isn't quite as big a prob as people are making it out to be. Even tho u've got the potential to use both rl and cg with one pickup u still need the ammo, cos it doesn't always (or ever?) come with both cg and rl ammo when u pick it up.

Something I dont like the look of in pk is the strafing. I've seen during cg fights times where the opponent hardly looks like they're even dodging (or maybe thats the knockback?), eaither way it makes the cg too easy to use.

2nd, u cannot fire chain and rl at same time. u have like a switch... from fire to altfire, which is like switching from rl to shaft in qw... And next to that u dont get cg ammo at first. Really, when maps are made for pk with good ammo placement etc. the game will be very good for duels. Tdm can be good too, if there are good maps...

You have a point, but I'm not so sure how applicable it is...

The game is very fun, and people do play for fun. But the game needs to be embraced by a bigger audience, the competitve fps audience, in order to be the 'most' fun. You need lots of people playing to maximise the fun, what's the point of playing a great game if noone else is playing it.

Case in point: CPM. It's an awesome game. When it was first developed/released, noone played it, everyone stuck with VQ3. Even the players who loved CPM, stuck with VQ3.

More players = more fun.
More players = more people of the highest skill level.
More people of the highest skill level = more fun.
More players = more tournaments.
More tournaments = more fun.

Unfortunately, those rules only apply to people of competitive/skilled nature who enjoy challenging themselves (say perhaps, younger people, who're naturally competitive and/or good at sports/other tasks), and do not generally apply to casual players, the people who like to play on their lunch break at work, middle aged men who like to play a game in the odd evening, people whose PC was given to them for free as a hand me down by someone else, etc.

Casual players generally require games that aren't very demanding (for obvious reasons), and there are a TON more casual players than competitive players, which is why the competitive players need to 'stick together' and remain fairly unified in order to create healthy competitive scenes, hence the PK players enthusiasm for the potential competitive scene for PK, because they understand how good a platform it is compared to other recent & up-coming games.

Pretty long winded way of saying that for some people, the fun lies in the challenge, the skill, the competition.
No matter how much you love football, if you're really good at it there's only so long you can have a kickabout with your mates in the park before you get bored. People like that need to play in leagues, teams, or against other good players, or at least, different players rather than the same few over and over.

Prize money is causally related to good competition, so some people for whom the fun lies in competition will naturally follow the money to find the competition, rather than finding the best game that could offer the best potential competition.

About this patch... I bet theres a warez version for it too, so wtf, people simply don't like it. The game was hyped to death, and what we got, is an engine demo - not a game.

Face it, they fucked up the game, there are many games who were fucked up, PK is just another one, It wouldn't be a big deal, if little fanboys wouldn't post every second day some PK news, and how its great and oh in sploh... - the majority doesn't like it, face that. Well, I see you missunderstand my post. Where exactly did I mention id software, I couldn't care less to compare these two companies, pcf & id that is.

I just said, that there are games, that are shitty and never live up to what the developer expected, i.e. Daikatana, etc., so is the industry. There are good games, which attract people, and some who doesn't. In my POV Painkiller is just another flop, that doesn't mean that pcf can't make any good games, it's just so that I personally don't like it, just as I don't like other games. I can play it here and then, but I don't see me launch the game every evening and playing it 1 hour.

As to what you might have noticed, many people share my opinion. I saw the game, played it, found it to not be worth the money, and any future patches and whatever won't change my mind, since I didn't have big problems with missing features, but with the concept of the whole game.

I tested it myself, the mp maps suck , the weapons suck. I had a high expectation of this game... but it didn't came out as i thought it would come out.
The bunnyhop is very newbisch and the only weapon that is used is rl/mini , stupid it a overpowerd weapon

Now, if PainKiller is a demons-and-hell oriented game... why didn't the developers included some demon-and-hell oriented features in the MP maps as well? I mean, look at the beta-MP map of doom3, it's a futuristic game, in another world, and you get to see features of the map that relate with the orientation of the game, like a huge red engine that turned the whole map red for a moment during the game... that adds a lot to a duel game... imo

it's about gameplay...

the maps of every game are usually based on the mp, pk is not an exception and also the ambience
