I think all of the systems at qcon have a 7800gt(x) (SLI)

The qcon specs are Intel Extreme Editon 3.8, which is actually slower than a 3.4 AMD.
The GFX cards are indeed 7800 gtx, though I am not sure if it's in Sli, considering one of the shots showed 55 fps, I'm tempted to say it's probably just the one.

Good to hear, good to hear. Got an AMD 3400+ myself and hope to run it smoothly, I "only" got a quite unlocked 6800LE though but considering it seems to run v. well on their machines with a lot of graphics pumped up I assume I could hit the 125 FPS.

In d3, the "picmip"-like command doesn't particularly help increase performance. I'd expect it to behave the same in quake 4.

What the hell .. this looks like an UT clone instead of a quake game. Im starting to worry ..

imo it just looks like it because the players move like total newbies. maps look like a mix of q2 and q3

I think it has a very quake look and feel to me. The weapons look a little bit like UT, but the majority of the graphics/items/animations I saw seemed to give that Quake 3 Test sort of feel to it. Besides, the gameplay looks nothing like UT imo, and that is what is far more important than what the weapons look like. A Dodge Neon and a Subaru WRX have a similar look, and even the same size engine...but I know which one I would rather drive. The speed and balance of the gameplay is what matters most, not that the guns look like UT weapons. Besides....cg_drawGun 0?

apart from some graphics, simply because there is more possible with this engine and they had to do something new (and clearly hit a more futuristic way) i don't see why this isn't anything else but a q3 copy with some modifcations into a new engine. Indeed the guns graphically looks influenced by games like the ut series, but you could just say doom3, fear, shogo, whatever as well.

True from one point of view. But it's obvious that gameprogrammers don't want to make the exact same game but just really well "patched". If that was the case UT would have been pretty fucking perfect right now.

I would expect the game to be less perfect as Q3, that game was just made with competitive hardcore gaming in mind. Instead they will let the rocket do 80 damage, or 120 damage, or let it have faster projectile speed. It's however they feel like doing it. Indeed hopefully it works out well.

I was just suprised when looking at the basics, how much the same it is to Q3. It's much more similar to Q3 as QW, Q2, UT2K4 or whatever. In my opinion that is. Yet at the same time it would be stupid if we would all go draw lotsof conclusions right now on some thirdperson footage.

Well yes and no. Exactly as you say they wanted to create a game that anyone could play, finally for the first real time people who didn't practice each day could play some good deathmatch matches vs noobie bots. But also what they said in their marketing is that they wanted to create the ultimate deathmatch game (for the pro's / that you can play competitively).
Imo they succeeded pretty good in both.

Yeah, Q1 had the best look to it, with the lava, sound effects(Trent Reznor), and the dark look to everything. I'd love to see those levels with today's gaming engines with today's AI. 8)

Yes, those are the latest Dell XPS laptops (no I nor fnatic is sponsored by Dell). I tested one of them at the E3 and they were simply amazing. They were ultrafast in high res with antialiasing and everything in doom3 and painkiller but most important of all is that the screen is simply amazing. It's much better then normal desktop TFT or LCD screens. It's simply really close to a good flatscreen CRT monitor, I'm not kidding.

I had the same thing, but i played the demo off, it's really good, but scary..

maybe keep trying so you overwin this. it's pretty heavy though and one time it really scared the shit out of me, first the girl then the guy. it has to do with the fact that i have a big imagination and totally go up in these kind of stories.

i've heard it said that single player is what sells more games to the general public, they wanna explore the game and finish missions. of those, a fraction wants it for competitive gaming, playing the same couple of maps for months because they enjoy competing against humans instead of monsters. let's hope that fraction is big!

True =) But still. I like the old Quake series weapons. They feel real in a way. Used and worn down due to combat etc.. UT weapons always felt like toys to me (except for the UT200x lightning gun, it's awsome). But I doubt they will feel like that once I play the game :)

Yeah maybe. Quake has always been for me :) UT is fun, don't get me wrong, but the graphics always felt weird to me. UT2003 and 4 is no exception, but Brothers in Arms showed me that the engine could feel totally different also, so I guess it's the way they want it to feel with the UT games.

I like them all actually. But I never played them exclusively like I did Q3. I played a lot of UT2003 though, but went back to Q3. But I get sorta the same feeling from all of them. But that's not important.

the only thing that game has going is the Unreal Engine 3.0 which everyone lusts after, but if Q4 delivers graphics like these...that demand might go down. especially if the gameplay is as good as Q3, and they come out with OSP or CPM-type mods...i don't see many people switching from Q4 (which everybody in the world will probably play) to UT

i wouldn't be so sure. if you look beyound esr or similar site, there isnt so much hype about q4. thats not the mainstream franchise as it used to be :(

as soon as they make one tv commercial half of all gamers who are over the age of 14 will immediately remember Quake :) it has built-in base. even UT2004 had that, and it was coming off of one popular game (UT1999), and one bad one. Quake 4 should sell easily as much as the series ever did, IMO. people will buy it just to check it out at least. its going to be the 'cool' game to get.

You got demo's for checking games out, no one will buy a game just to go check it out. They will have the intention to play the game. Or guys who just don't know what to do with their money idd then you get the will try it out part.

About the "guns feel" thingie, some saying they look UT'ish and stuff like that...

I thought about that aswell long ago, before they were even released. Sometimes you just "know" people will hurry to compare it to other irrelevant stuff that they already know and have a fixed opinion and start arguing. I just took a different approach to it all: I didn't compare them to anything at all, I just viewed them one by one and evaluated them. THEN asked myself what I felt about them.

I didn't see the weapons I see when I load Q3 or UT nowadays.

I saw the weapons I saw when Q3 was brand new. It's great :) Sounds silly, but it's all about feeling. Going in a bit more critical and doing direct comparisons I even thought the Rocket Launcher was a Railgun because of the shape, but it's not and the loading-thingie on top of it simply makes it a Rocket Launcher. And frankly I don't care - it was one of the best looking weapons I've ever seen, honestly. Very stylish and cool with the brave use of yellow there. Also one gun, I don't remember which one but I think it was the Hyperblaster, had some stripes on it which immediately made me think about Q3. Weird round weapon it was, but by not setting my mind to "hate" I'll grow into liking it eventually.

Looks decent, does remind me alot of UT however which isnt a bad thing as UT is a great game.
I think i will definatly try this game out.

By the way, the first "version" of the skin for the rocket launcher for UT2K3/4 used yellow stripes, although it was changed to red later on :P

I'm really excited for the game but I can't help thinking that the weapons look really lame. It's like the designer has tried to show off by making the weapon models too complex and adding all sorts of random crap on top of the basic shape.

i just played q4 for about 4 hours.

I like it... it feels like q2 but with q3 physics.

oh, and that toolbag fatal1ty changed his shootout game from q3 to q4. The worst part is, he has been playing long before today.

It's dumb really, fatal1ty is playing a buncha guys who have played the game for MAX an hour and he obviously has been playing for weeks... it's not even funny to watch.

anywho... all the weapons are back, hyperblaster, nailgun (works just like plasma), shotty, machine gun (with some shitty recoil) rail, rocket launcher, lg, nade launcher.... pretty sure i'm forgetting something.

anyway, the levels are fairly big...i was expecting more d3-like levels but the q4ctf map is pretty huge.

Strafing is in... but feels kinda weird (like u slide after a jump, and during that slide u cant jump again or really move like u want) it's not nessecarily bad, just something i'll have to adjust to. double jump is in. Nailgun climbing is in.. and theres this one part in the ctf map where u can nailgun climb a wall to mega... it's pretty nifty. Rocket jumping is in but its like, extreme. It sends u REALLY high in the air and doesnt seem to do too much damage to yourself.

Seems like it's cpma's fast weapon switch too..

Why would you expect D3 like levels? It's only the D3 engine, not the game. RTCW doesn't have Q3 like levels at all, does it?

I figured the levels would be crowded because u cant have huge enviorments etc. on that engine. In fact both the DM levels ARE like that. Oh, and the game still chops up in some areas on the comps they have.. which isnt good (the gfx arent even alll the way up).


and yes, he has been playing for WEEKS. He has the maps completely memorized and even spawn raps.

Can't have huge environments in the D3 engine? I know they modified it for Q4, but isn't it possible to have big maps for D3? Just curious cause I never read that anywhere. I figured the reason they were like that in D3 is cause they want the dark hallways etc. to make it more scary.

I heard DjWheat say on last nights ITG broadcast that Fatal1ty indeed had been playing Q4 for a while... he himself said he only had started playing the game 1 day before the launch of Quakecon.

So he already knew tricks like: you can fire rockets and grenades through the teleporters and also if an enemy takes the jumppad and you fire a grenade onto the jumppad, the grenade actually follows the target.

How would he know that if Fatal1ty said something else?

Don't like the futuristic look, kinda over played atm. Dont like the looks of the guns and I didn't like quake2 that much. So lots of bad news for me :P, but hey it cant be worse than doom3! Hopefully I like it though, havent had fun in any of these newer games that have been released in the past 3 years or so :(. I also hope they make commands that actually help your fps. I hate all these new games with their little commands and low quality settings that do jack shit. Stop trying to sell video cards bastards. :)

These are just my opinions.

Pros:
+great physics
+gameplay is lots of fun; teams seem to work pretty well
+fun weapons, great weapon design
+quad damage looks freaking cool
+not even remotely as dark as Doom 3
+definitely has the same kind of visual style as Q2 did, though people have commented that it kind of looks like Unreal Tournament

Cons:
-difficulty (for me) watching the hud while I'm playing; not sure if this is due to it being somewhat small, or if the colors blend into the map or what
-no idea what team I'm on unless I hold tab down; the team scores didn't seem to be highlighted in any way, unless I just didn't see it, and the markers above the heads were tough to see at times
-health/ammo models seemed a bit small; I didn't even notice the health bubbles until my third map

Take these just as my first impressions, though, from one sitting of 40 minutes or so of constant play. I'll play it a bunch again tomorrow and see how it feels. I'm definitely going to be playing this game when it's released.

From what we see in the movies, the basics look good.
BUT IMO this game will live or fall with it's netcode...

I didn't really like what I saw in that clip (not the one with fat, I'm still downloadint that). It just looked a bit too dark and slow, but the darkness is nothing that can't be easily fixed and the fact that it looked slow to me has a lot to do with the people that were playing it, newbs :\

I'm expecting a lot from this clip of fatal1ty playing.

Downloaded the video of Fat, the game looks and plays like UT, He didn't bunnyhop from what I seen, just using the jump pads to get around.

However after looking at the specs of the computer they used, it's not bad, but if it gets you 55fps lik you guys are saying then it will suck if you want to buy a new pc to play the game.

Looks good either way and probably the 2006 WT SP game.

I believe the strafejumping isn't exactly like in Q3, and he's not playing Q3 anymore really, so maybe he's just not used to it. I doubt it will be much slower than Q3 when you get used to timing the jumps properly etc..
