Nobody (as in numbers that mean anything)cares about CPM anymore apart from the few that play it and as much as I hate to say it, the same goes for OSP.

The problems with Quake 4 can be ironed out and while cpm has good maps and solid gameplay already, it s community is a dying one.

That's the main motivation for a lot of people to move on to Quake 4.
Even if the game is not as amazing, it will have tourneys and a frenzy of interest for the next few years and that's just as important to many people as a good game. Otherwise seriously, why would anyone play q4 over q3?
Try playing Swelts Phrantic map in Q4, guess what??
it's fast, runs like a dream and offers all the old thrills!

Next year there are tons of major tourneys probably over million dollars in prize money to be won, new players coming into the scene.
Even if CPM became the best game in the world, it's always gonna be a very hardcore part of a very hardcore market.
If you could generate interest with big tourneys, prizes and recognition for the top players then I'm sure CPM would be huge, but its had its chance.

you are right the one reason to play Quake 4 is the media attention and massive amount of players, but imo that shouldnt decide whether or not to play a game, im happy as long as theres people to join the servers, and if cpm is released standalone, the community will grow for sure.

Playing cause of prizemoney seems retarded to me :P better get a job then, or even better play poker to win even more !! ;)

Should someone go for a game that is definetely more exciting and solid than Q4 but forget about large tournaments (especially teamplay modes) and cash prizes? Or go for Quake4 which is watered down and buggy atm but still has great potential for fame and glory (and a lot more ppl playing it)?

It may look like an ez choice for you but for the majority of players it isn't.

well, its not an easy choice, but honestly Quake 4 to me seems more like a bad remake of Quake 3, nothing gameplay wise in Quake 4 could take more than a day to implement(maybe except the tourneymode?) in Quake 3..

To me Quake 4 looks more like Team Arena 2 than a new game.

the mod developers for osp and cpm spent years making their mod, to make the game as playable as possible for everyone, soon as a new game comes out people just throw it away and expect the mod developers to suddenly start afresh on a new game.

yeah it is, but i think the mod'ers learn more and more about what they are working with thus their job *should* be easier, its just a thought though, but hard to stop the masses.

Excuse me, but could you explain us where did you get the idea that it's modder's "job" to create mods that correct errors that the game developers overlooked or didn't bother to implement?

my opinion is that its ridiculous that modders have to correct errors the developers dont care about, but its still easier for the modders to know what they need to do for a "new" game like Quake 4, cause they know what the demand is(brightskins etc.) but dont get me wrong, the idea that modders should be those making a game good is both wrong and far out, yet harsh reality :I

Buh ur a cpm newb, we(no) have played CPM for 5 years now we need a new challenge even if its pretty shit atm :(, theres no point going back to CPM for us as we reached our pinnicle there in 2003 :)

People still play Quakeworld, and is happy about that :P

I was playing it still till this summer same with q2, but for us cpm is different, we reached the top :)

Cpma being a fine mod with excellent physics and gameplay , is alas, dead , pickups are basically the all of cpma teamplay now.

Its fine if you want to duel , but even a standalone version wont make it more popular.

Problem with cpma has always been playerbase , no teams = no leagues no competition.

You say we sit and look back at past glories that is indeed the case , as there is no future glory to be had, granted we havent played in some time and would get owned for about 4 weeks, then it would be same old same old.

Tho a standalone with good publicity and a lack of elite attitude could go a long way to growing a more sizeable community.

Basically make the standalone and make a new community channel so noobs dont have to face up the derision and attitude of the current crop of cpma players.

Indeed this could be a good news dude, but as some already mentioned before, if the game can not grow up a good community, or a community that is much smaller as other big games, like Quake 4 will be it, this won't turn out to be a big succes.

Just take a look at Warsow, that had or has the potential to be such a good game (and it is better as games such as Painkiller or Doom³), but on the other hand I don't even know any big cup and don't know anyone who plays it really. no popular community.

But if there will be a stand-alone of cpm, it by the way has a bigger chance to make a bigger community, because a lot of more people will get to know cpm. Of course trough the popularity it already has.

But I think it will be hard for a stand-alone cpm to beat Quake 4, that will probably have a great next year, with a lot of happenings.

i got struck by better gameplay :P i cant stand the rail only game that Quake 3 and 4 is, like that dood lightchen, he would like hit everything with rail and had no skills otherwise and still wins, that stuff sucks
