ESWC Journal, Day -1 (39 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 16:51 CDT, 3 July 2007 - iMsg
I'm sitting at Heathrow's Terminal 2 watching BBC News 24 on the screen near me. There's reports of terrorist bombs, people being arrested all over the world, and the UK threat level being critical. But here I am, early for my flight and hanging around wondering what to do with myself. You see I was expecting massive delays on the drive in, a long walk to get to the terminal, long queues at check in, and a huge wait at security. I was almost hoping to see tanks parked outside Heathrow and every other car stopped and searched. Yes I understand that these aren't things you should really hope for, but I couldn't help feeling disappointed in my uneventful and suprisingly short journey from my door to the airport gate where I'm not sitting writing this. Let's face it, it doesn't make for an interesting opening to this journal. Woke up, went to the airport, had no problems. It just doesn't have the same story-telling punch as dodging tanks, being strip searched and sprinting to the airport gate just in time to slide through the closing plane doors, glancing back only to grab my Indiana Jones hat in the nick of time. They're calling our flight now so I'd better get a move on, will continue writing when I reach Paris.

In the space between paragraphs, here I am in the Ξle-de-France! Paris in July can only mean one thing... on ESR at any rate. That is, of course, The Electronic Sports World Cup. As one of the world's biggest and most successful video game tournaments, ESWC has won a place at least in my heart for holding on to a 1v1 First Person Shooter throughout its five-year history. I won't try to prove it here since that would be an article in itself, but I truly believe 1v1 FPS games are the root of all esports at least in the western world. And yes, I am biased.

Unfortunately this year we see ESWC07 clashing with WSVG Dallas, meaning that the Quake 4 talent is split across continents. Unfortunate as that is, the bright side is that we are likely to see a different set of players shine without being smothered by the downright efficiency of some of the top professionals. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Purri play and hopefully get a good result in a big International final. I did have to mention Purri in particular because he is staying in my room and I'm hoping for some late night spooning.

All the gaming action is still two days away! I got to my hotel across the road from the ESWC hall, and promptly logged in to MSN to boast that I was in Paris to my friends. Unfortunately I was in Paris sitting at my computer, and therefore not worthy of a whole lot of jealousy. To correct this problem I hit the streets and went to do some sight-seeing while the sun was still out. I decided to try the Louvre, being a big art fan. Ok I give in... I just wanted to see stuff from the Da Vinci Code, I'm a philistine. Turned out that the gallery was shut, so I just spent some time wandering around and taking photos. I just got back to the hotel now to upload photos and finish this journal entry. I'm hoping that when I wander down to the lobby again in a few minutes there'll be some greasy looking gamers talking about rocket jumping. Wish me luck!

Jealousy Mouse (16 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 11:00 CDT, 31 May 2007 - iMsg
Avago sent me this mouse sample because I helped them with some questions on how their mouse technology is used and gaming habits of top players.

I have a very impressive collection of mice at home, as you can imagine, so I was a little concerned that Avago thought I might appreciate another. However, this really is a sweet little unit. No good for gaming of course, but it's so damn sexy. I've been converted to a laptop user recently, so I'll have plenty of opportunities to show off this mouse.

It's wireless, but the usb wireless receiver clicks into the mouse body when you don't need it. Also the "mousewheel" is actually a touch sensitive pad instead of a mechanical wheel.

Razer DeathAdder Review (565 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 17:00 CST, 8 January 2007 - iMsg
Gamers are a demanding group of people. Release a poor quality product to a gaming audience and you can expect a hostile response in gaming media and gaming forums where no-one is afraid to air their views. While most gaming hardware is examined closely from every angle and tested to destruction, gaming mice got off lightly because there was no good way to actually test them to see how well they performed. Enter the ESReality MouseScore 2007 system, published last month. This benchmarking system made it possible to test the performance of mice in a scientific and repeatable way. Mouse manufacturers have to be careful about what they claim now because if they're not being completely truthful, we'll let you know!

Razer unveiled the DeathAdder earlier last year to much excitement to gaming enthusiasts. The ergonomic design was a marked departure from the very small, narrow mice they had been making recently. While the curve of the body gives it a very "Microsoft" look, similar to the popular Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, the DeathAdder still screams Razer design from every angle.

The DeathAdder is aimed at low sensitivity gamers, that is gamers who prefer to sweep the mouse a long way for any kind of movement. To accomplish this Razer are using a new, third generation, infra-red, optical sensor that they claim "eliminates skipping and negative acceleration". I'm very glad to see that Razer do understand the real problems that a gaming mouse can have. But the question is: have Razer got it right with the DeathAdder? We answer that question in this comprehensive mouse review.

Update: There have been two problems reported by ESR readers with some Razer DeathAdder mice. Firstly some DeathAdders continue to track even when lifted off the mousepad by a large distance (over 10mm). Secondly there is a small amount of positive mouse acceleration created by the mouse drivers. We are looking into both of these problems to find out why, and how to solve them.

Update 2: Most problems have been fixed with the latest firmware. For full details please view this thread:

Is anyone here going to CES? I'm thinking of going since there are a few people I need to talk to.

Deciding on a hotel right now, so would be nice to know if there are a group, e.g. for the WSVG, that are using a specific hotel.

Let me know if you're going.

ESReality MouseScore 2007 (1019 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 18:00 CST, 24 December 2006 - iMsg
With the launch of the world's first independent benchmarking system for mice, buying a desktop rodent will no longer involve guesswork and luck. Sujoy Roy has been analysing hardcore data and investigating the real world at a fundamental level since entering Cambridge University in 1994. His other passion in life is gaming, so the creation of the MouseScore benchmark makes perfect sense!

If you are serious about fragging the world to death, then you can't afford NOT to read this article and be the first gamer in your team to know the absolute truth in the battle between the massed ranks of the multinational mouse manufacturers.

If you want to read all the technical detail start at Page 1. If you just want the results go straight to Page 21 to see how the different mice compare.

More Caption Stuff - Images (13 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 19:06 CST, 20 December 2006 - iMsg
Someone asked if you can include images in the captions so I added that option.

http://www.esreality.com/?a=quote&quote=113
http://www.esreality.com/?a=quote&quote=112

To add images into the captions, you have to first post the caption. Then edit the comment which contains the caption and attach a Place Image file with the image you want to use.

Once the Place Image is approved, you have to edit the caption - click View on the caption and there should be an 'Edit' link under the Picture. This lets you play around with the caption again but this time you have the option of using the uploaded image too.

Update: Added move/resize/padding with the mouse instead of having to type numbers in the boxes.

Anyone want a red Moto SLVR? (14 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 18:09 CST, 19 December 2006 - iMsg
My phone number has finally changed onto the Blackberry so I can ditch the old phone. I was thinking of putting it up on ebay but since I got the ESR logo lasered onto the back I thought I'd see if anyone here wanted it?

It's a red metallic Motorola SLVR. The Motorola website has info about it here:
http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/deta...bjectId=86

SUMMARY OF FEATURES:
• Sleek, super-thin design without sacrificing advanced functionality
• PTT with icon presence indicators for one-touch connections**
• Integrated VGA camera with 4x zoom and video capture and playback
• Bluetooth Class 2 for hands-free connectivity
• MP3 player to store, repeat, shuffle and play favorite tunes; 22Khz polyphonic speaker
• Up to 512 MB or removable TransFlash memory
• WAP 2.0
• Downloadable wallpaper, screensaver and MP3 ringtones*
• J2ME™ MIDP 2.0
• Integrated hands-free speakerphone
• Messaging via MMS*, IM Wireless Village* and email (POP3, SMTP)*
• Motorola's SCREEN3 technology solution featuring zero-click access to news, sports, entertainment, and other premium content.*

I still have the original box which is a rather funky sliding thing. The phone is in decent shape. You can see in the pics that some of the gloss black on the sides has chipped away to a matt surface underneath but it's the same colour so you don't notice it.

The ESR logo thing is laser etched onto the back. It looks like a white tattoo on the red metallic surface. Came out really nicely.

The phone is unlocked and the box says MOTOROLA L7 GSM850/900/1800/1900.

For some reason the only accessory I got with the phone was the charger. There's no USB cable or headphones. However it's a standard USB mobile socket so I guess any other cable would work. I guess I ought to say how great the phone is, but to be honest I never got to grips with the Motorola menus so I never liked it myself.

Let me know if you want to buy it. Looking for around £50.

Start with Windows Rant (59 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 08:50 CST, 19 December 2006 - iMsg
Why does every program you install today want to start up when Windows starts and remain running all the time in the system tray? It really bugs me sometimes. I'm not sure if they're using up memory or bandwidth, checking for updates every so often. I just don't understand the purpose.

I installed octoshape for watching GFTV and I just noticed the damn Octoshape icon in the system tray. What would I possible want the octoshape icon in the system tray when I'm not already watching a stream. I had to actually to choose to not start the damn thing with Windows, and to quit the program when I'm not watching a stream.

I've seen worse ones too. For some of the IM clients, you can only change the preferences if you are signed in to an account. That means to remove it you have to mess around with msconfig. Some others can't be removed at all without tinkering with Windows.

I've seen the desktop of non-techie people, and their system tray sometimes takes up more than half of the screen with all the crap that demands to be running all the time, but doesn't really serve much purpose until you actually want to use them. And Windows takes 10 minutes to load because of all that stuff.

There should be a standard for programs where they only load into memory when you want them to, and not just because it's installed on your computer.

New: Captions! (7 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 17:26 CST, 18 December 2006 - iMsg
I was struck by the sudden and desperate need to put captions onto gallery images. I've put the code live on the site since I'm too tired to test it anymore. There will probably be some bugs, so just let me know what you find.

To add a new caption, there is a link under every photo in the galleries. You need to use the form and fiddle with the numbers right now until I work out how to do drag+drop.

I don't think it works yet with Anonymous posters, I'll test that tomorrow.

Have updated the viewer so you don't have to reload the page now to show or change captions. Also added a 'Permalink' so you can share the link to the captions.

QuakeCon 2007 (63 comments)

View Coverage: QCON'07
Organiser: QuakeCon
Website: http://www.quakecon.org
Location: Hilton Anatole Hotel, Dallas
Duration: 2 Aug 2007 to 5 Aug 2007

Scheduled: 18:00 CDT, 1 August 2007 to 18:00 CDT, 4 August 2007
Schedule: Passed

We're locked and loaded for August 2-5, 2007 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX, and we've got more gaming, events, exhibits and fun planned than ever before.

This year's BYOC Area will consume the entire Trinity Hall 1, with over 70,000 square feet of floor space and 2,700 player spots – over 1,000 more seats than 2006. We've also increased the exhibit area 5X to 25,000 square feet, enough to accommodate up to 50 exhibitors demonstrating their latest games and computer hardware. Of course, it wouldn't be QuakeCon without our high-stakes pro gaming tournaments; and attendees can also look forward to the return and expansion of our enormously popular and one-of-a-kind “Quick Draw” tournaments, which pit randomly selected attendees against each other in high-pressure battles for serious cash. And in keeping with QuakeCon tradition, every day will be packed full of contests, conferences, announcements, and entertainment.

ESR etched BB8100 (27 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 13:00 CST, 15 December 2006 - iMsg
I just got my new phone, which was great because I hated the Motorola that I got last time. While searching for all the new things to do with the phone, I found a place that does laser etching. They normally do iPods and Laptops, but unti 24 December the guy has the laser equipment set up at the O2 Store opposite Bond Street station in London. If you have an O2 phone he will etch it for free. Otherwise it's £25 a shot. You can bring your own design or he will put something together from a template.

Of course I had to bring along an ESR logo to put on my new phone. Here's the result. I didn't want to trust his machine to make a greyscale so I made the orange part into a circular pattern instead.

Their website is: www.razorlab.co.uk

Lightbeam Tachometer (5 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 03:00 CST, 11 December 2006 - iMsg
I improvised a digital tachometer by creating a light beam sensor broken by a small plastic arm on the turntable. My glue gun died on me years ago so these days I make do with glue sticks and a lighter. It's not the prettiest job, but it works.

The hole in the plastic where I ripped out the original stylus is ugly but I haven't had a chance to fill it in yet.
