There's no doubt, Razer have succeeded in making a very sexy mouse. The DeathAdder has a distinctive look and feel that sets it apart from all of its rivals, even the Habu that shares an identical body shape. But gamers demand performance to back up the looks. I used the ESReality MouseScore 2007 benchmarking system to put the DeathAdder to the ultimate test.

Benchmarking Setup

The system involves a rotating disc spinning a professional gaming mousepad at high speeds. The gaming mouse is clamped on top of the spinning surface to emulate a range of speeds that you would move the mouse at. By varying the speed from very slow up to extremely high, I measure the response that is generated on the PC and thereby plot an accurate graph of speed vs response. For full details on the benchmarking setup, see my previous article: ESReality MouseScore 2007.

To begin testing, I set the mouse at its maximum resolution of 1800 dpi and maximum polling rate of 1000 Hz. A perfect response graph is a straight line with no curve that continues up to high mouse speeds.

Razer DeathAdder @ 1800dpi Response Graph

The graph shows us immediately that the DeathAdder performs well. Infact the Perfect Control (where the line remains straight) goes all the way up to 3.92 m/s. This is infact the highest limit of Perfect Control of any mouse I have ever tested! If you compare it to the Razer Diamondback, previously Razer's best mouse, you can see that they have cured the "Clipping" problem. The clipping caused negative acceleration over certain speeds, and it has indeed been fixed for the DeathAdder.

The Malfunction Speed is reached at 4.4 m/s, high enough to mean you don't need to worry about skipping in gaming. By measuring the gradient of the graph, I can calculate the resolution of the mouse in DPI. It works out as expected to be 1800dpi. Changing the USB polling rate does not affect the response graph at all.
