Starcraft 2 beta patch 6 released (40 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 07:46 CDT, 26 March 2010 - iMsg
A new patch for StarCraft 2 beta was just released along with a reset of all current StarCraft 2 ladders and users.

Plenty of changes, most notably the reduction of SCV health to 45 (from 60), to help prevent the notorious SCV-rush in Terran vs Protoss.

Watch (and play) Starcraft 2 without key (84 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 14:55 CST, 20 February 2010 - iMsg
As I don't see the harm Blizzard could have from this, it may as well be posted. If you download the beta (either from Blizzard or from a secondary source such as TPB or from fileshack), there are currently methods to watch replays even if you werent accepted into the beta. First, you have to install the game.

UPDATE
Here is a file (mirror) that does all of the above in one go except adding replays.

Seems like it actually works to just drag and drop the replays on the Starcraft2 exe-file, though you have to fix the cache as above for it to work. The cache in the above file may have two maps missing, you can get the full cache here. Which goes into the <device>:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net\Cache folder.

UPDATE 2
Starcraft 2 is now playable!

Torrent. However, so far it is only a "sandbox" mode, meaning you cannot play against anyone, not even the AI but you can test all the units, buildings and so on.

If you find the sandbox mode to be too boring here is a custom map that at least gives you some enemies to kill (at the center).

UPDATE 3
AI Playable (though very stupid)

A map with 3 very poor AI players has finally been released. Use the sandbox mod above to load it.

Another update. A pack of 3 AI maps has been released, together with a "hard" AI mod. Though it is called hard it is quite an inaccurate name, but at least its an improvement, think of it as vs "easy".

UPDATE 4
There is actually a quite good AI up now (here). Try level 5, the protoss the AI is quite poor but if it plays zerg it is fairly strong.

For an even stronger AI. Try this chinese version.
Place in \StarCraft II Beta\Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod and rename it Base.SC2Data

Serious Sam HD released (54 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 04:41 CST, 25 November 2009 - iMsg
While FPS-games certainly are more common now than years ago, the old, fast paced, unrealistic style of FPS-games such as Quake, DOOM or Unreal are almost a dying breed.

However, for those looking for a hardcore single player or co-op FPS experience, the remake, Serious Sam HD - The First Encounter was released today for the PC (via Steam) and Xbox360 with a fairly light price tag of 20€.

How to play back SC demos

This is a VOD, not a demo.

It is not often that a foreign amateur player gets to play a Korean pro, especially not one as accomplished as Korea (Republic of) Boxer but in this game we get to see Ukraine WhiteRa show what he is made of versus the Terran Emperor. The game is from IEF and the English commentary is done by Husky.

Blizzard loses vs KeSPA (46 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 16:32 CDT, 25 October 2009 - iMsg
There will be no season four of the popular GomTV Classics. The Korean e-Sports Player's Association (KeSPA) and Blizzard Entertainment has had an ongoing war concerning the esport future of Starcraft 2 in South Korea and the first major battle seems to have been won by KeSPA.

Blizzard has for a long time been trying to get a larger piece of the pie that is generated by the massive Starcraft interest in South Korea. As their negotiations with the two largest tv broadcasters, OGN and MBC, failed, they then proceeded to sponsors GOM, an independent league in an attempt to make GOM the dominating Starcraft, WoW and WC3 body.

Over the past few years, with the help of a massive prize pool from Blizzard, GOM has grown to become one of the largest leagues. However, now it seems as this has come to an end as KeSPA has denied seven of its most popular teams from participating in the league, which in the end ment it would lose most of its popularity and hence it was forced to cancel the upcoming season. The affected teams were Air Force, Estro, MBC, KT, OGN, STX, SKT1.

Who will win the war in the end? According to reports Blizzard and KeSPA will meet to attempt further negotiations in December.

Starcraft 2 Battle Report #4 (55 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 17:46 CDT, 19 October 2009 - iMsg
Number four of the popular Starcraft 2 battle reports was "leaked" earlier today. The battle reports are videos of Starcraft 2 match which are commentated by the game developers and as such give a good insight of how the final game will play.

This time around we get to see some new features in action, such as Psi Storms, Siege Tanks, new cliff mechanics and especially the Nuke, which has been made much more accessable in Starcraft 2 and some argue is overpowered in its current incarnation.

How to play back SC demos

The above link is a dummy, use the below links of part 1, 2 and 3 instead!

More and more people are starting to follow and enjoy Starcraft games on ESReality, much thanks to KekS, PuertoRican and the Intel Classics.

Many may not even own Starcraft or at least do not want to watch replays without commentary. Hence, as an experiment, I'll add a (good) game as a VOD here. ESReality doesn't fully support this in terms of functionality, so we'll see how it plays out.

If people enjoy it, there should be more to come, as there are lots of great Starcraft matches being played amongst the pros in Korea.

This is great game between the two Korean pros Lomo (Terran) and Kwanro (Zerg) on Destination. English commentary by Cholera.

It's not often we cover consoles here at ESReality but at times you see technological advances that you simply can't help not writing about.

Project Natal, which was just announced at E3, is basically a facial, voice and motion recognition system for the XBOX 360. In one of the demonstration videos, we see a girl interacting with a digital boy on the screen, Milo. The digital boy reacts to what the girl says and they seem to be able to hold a conversation while they follow each others movements. As the video progresses, the real girl can actually see herself transmitted into the game. Then she decides to draw a picture to Milo, so she draws a picture on a piece of real paper, passes it to the TV and the boy actually grabs it, seemingly holding the picture in his hands, inside the TV..

See what Steven Spielberg calls "a historical moment".

Swedish and new Polish QL servers (100 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 19:04 CDT, 7 May 2009 - iMsg
The Poland Polish and Sweden Swedish server launch last week for Quake Live has been anything but smooth. The Polish server had routing problems and merely hours after the launch the Swedish servers suffered a hardware failure and has been down ever since.

However, now the Swedish servers are up and running again and another new Polish server location has been added (this time around apparently without the routing problems). Yet the freshly relaunched Swedish (Stockholm) based servers are still suffering from severe routing problems. Reportedly people who live right next to the server get routed all the way from Stockholm to Norway to Turkey and finally to Russia.

Nevertheless is great to see id make headway with the new server locations and it should be just a matter of time before this issue is resolved.

Every time the hitbox / anti-lag overcompensating error is brought up, there is always someone who claims its not a true representation of how it is, due to the demo recorder not working properly, lag spikes etc.

I recorded a video vs bots locally in order to show you how poor the hitbox really is. This is recorded with fraps, not from a demo, so you cannot blame the demo recorder nor can you blame any kind of prediction or anti-lag, since it's all done locally.

This isn't something that just pops up every now and then either, it's the same way on every single shot every single game. In order to hit, you have to aim far behind the target if he is moving.

May want to watch it in HQ.

Unfortunately, the achievements in QL aren't much to cheer for, however, I have two challenges of my own in CA, which you may or may not be able to beat.

The tier system in CA is messed up, as you cannot reach above tier 3 but try to at least do it on a tier 3 servers.

Challenge #1
Get above 100 score in a single CA game.

Challenge #2
Get above 10 average score per round in a full CA game.

The first challenge is quite doable but thus far I've only seen one ever being able to do the second challenge. If you enjoy these things, post a screenshot or match link to prove thy worth. If you beat them both, I'll be impressed!

If you manage to do the second challenge, I'll give you a [+]!

Quakelive update, new server locations (22 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 05:54 CDT, 1 May 2009 - iMsg
There has been a minor update to how Quakelive works, mainly changing the way stats are handled.

Apart from these changes, the main new addition is that there are now highly anticipated local servers in Poland Poland (Warsaw), Sweden Sweden (Stockholm) and China China (Hangzhou)! On top of that, id still has plenty of more profound changes in the works.

UPDATE New Euro locations: We are testing those locations with a new provider. It may take a few days to work through network peering issues and improve the connection quality.

Duke Nukem Forever milestone reached (46 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 17:38 CDT, 17 April 2009 - iMsg
This month marks 12 years since the never ending story of Duke Nukem Forever was first announced and while its been quiet lately it looks like there is still life in the Duke. According to George Broussard, the director in charge of the game, the development team has now reached a "milestone".
Closing out a milestone this week. 71 more tasks to do and we started with probably 800-900. Been a good push. Next one starts Monday.
Why 71 tasks left is a milestone is anyones guess, so is the question if they left the most time consuming tasks for the end. However, math would tell you that the game is around 90% done.

With some luck we might see a playable version of the game at the upcoming E3.

QL stutters when someone connects. (15 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 10:00 CDT, 16 April 2009 - iMsg
Every time someone connects while I'm playing, the entire game freezes for a second. Since I mainly play on high population servers it tends to be come highly frustrating as it happens around 10 times per game, often resulting in my death.

To fix it I've tried to change browser (to IE), change the prefetching options in firefox, change cg_deferplayers, update the PB files yet nothing seems to work. On the official forums people are as oblivious as ever.

Anyone who has any idea what could be causing this? My FPS otherwise in the game is fine and my computer should be running the game without any problems.

MYM kicked out of the G7 (157 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 09:34 CDT, 27 March 2009 - iMsg
Due to the troubles MYM has had recently, resulting in them resigning their ever popular Starcraft and Warcraft squads, G7 has taken the harsh decision of kicking them out of their prestigious organisation.

"This is certainly a difficult moment for the G7," remarked Alexander T. Muller, one of the federation's senior and founding members. "MYM, as represented by Mark "Mercy" Fries, was an extremely productive and important member in his time with the G7 Teams. However, while it isn't easy to dismiss such a significant presence as the MYM brand, this decision was made swiftly and with much certainty. The G7 Teams will continue to move forward and fulfill our organization's mission."

With the removal of Meet Your Makers, the G7 Federation of Teams currently consists of seven members: Craig "Torbull" Levine (on an individual basis), as well as compLexity, Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, Made in Brasil, Mousesports, and SK Gaming.

ESWC finals postponed (80 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 10:21 CDT, 22 March 2009 - iMsg
Due to the current financial crisis, the ESWC Grand Finals has been postponed until the end of the year.

None of the past ESWC partners has yet renewed its support for 2009, [..] No new partner is ready to commit on financial support of events operations in 2009. The IT & Hardware market is very affected here in Western Europe, as probably in the rest of the world.

Sponsorships and communication budgets are the first to be canceled in such situation. And as E-Sport stands as a niche value for most of the brands, it is even more difficult

(As a result) we will suspend the upcoming Grand Final of June to postpone it to last quarter 2009.
Says Matthieu Dallon, the ESWC president.

The financial situation has certainly had its negative impact on electronic sports recently, with ESWC struggling, MYM closing down large parts of their organisation, AMD stopping all major sponsorships and mTw being forced to cut gamer salaries by 50-75%. Apart from the ever successful Starcraft in Korea, progaming seems to have gone back several years just in the past few months.

Leaked Wolfenstein screenshots? (242 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 07:43 CDT, 17 March 2009 - iMsg
Pictures rumoured to be leaked from multiplayer maps of the new Wolfenstein title has started circulating on the web. Wolfenstein uses the now rather old iD tech-4 engine, known from Doom 3 and Quake Wars amongst others so the graphics may not be superb, yet thankfully the player has finally found the end of the bunker in Wolfenstein 3D and has now stepped into an open and in some ways vivid world. Likely with help from the previously hyped MegaTexture technology. The biggest new feature of this installment of Wolfenstein is The Veil, a sort of alternate reality that the player can switch in and out of at will, similiar to the world Frodo enters while putting on the One Ring. It is uncertain how this will work in multiplayer.

Wolfenstein is scheduled to be released this summer by Raven Software, with multiplayer by the CTF masters Threewave and the new studio Endrant. Publisher for Raven will be of course Activision Blizzard.

Crossfire.nu said that maps are mostly small and feature indoor environment just like RtCW did. It's still not sure from which state of the game development process those map screenshots are taken, hence there might be different maps in the final version, or some things may be left away or changed. As all the screenshots are watermarked by idsoftware, we can assume them being legit and true content of the upcoming Wolfenstein game.

Robert Jordan, author of the extremely popular Wheel of Time-saga has passed away.

In my opinion, he was the best fantasy writer since Tolkien and his death is a huge loss for those of us who enjoy fantasy.

Worlds of Starcraft? (135 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 03:40 CDT, 6 May 2007 - iMsg
We have previously reported that on the 19th of May, Blizzard would announce Starcraft 2 as the sequal to one of the most celebrated and played game of all time. However, if computerandvideogames.com is to be believed, that will not be the case. Instead, the announced Starcraft game will be an MMO.

Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea - the epicentre of the sci-fi RTS series' rabid fandom.

The unveiling of the new instalment has previously been rumoured for the South Korea event, though we now know that the title is in fact an online spin-off and not a new RTS game as previously assumed.

While it may seem like an odd decision at first to produce yet another MMORPG in a market they so totally dominate with World of Warcraft it is not a completely unlikely event. Seeing as the owners of Blizzard, Vivendi, which happens to be one of the largest companies in the world and also a company with some heavy economical difficulties, would push for another MMO cash cow.

Nilbog vs Ragnaros (74 comments)

Ragnaros, the ancient God of fire, has eluded the World of Warcraft players ever since the game was first released. However, very recently he was first slayed in America and shortly there after in Europe. This is a video of one of the first kills of him by the European guild Nilbog.

Just spawning Ragnaros is a pain and once spawned he has some abilities that has made the encounter very difficult. The main thing is that after certain intervals he despawns and turns into eight smaller mobs which you must kill in a short amount of time or you will have to fight them and Ragnaros at the same time. Also, the smaller mobs mana burns everything close to them so they are extremely deadly against casters. The counter to this is fairly simple, bring as much DPS (damage per second) as possible in order to make him spawn the sons of flames just once and bring him down so fast you won't be drained of all mana. If you want max DPS in World of Warcraft, Rogues are the way to go.

The movie has ventrilo chat for the most part and gives a good insight from a Rogue perspective on how to effectively slay the toughest boss in the game. There is a slight volume increase in the middle of the movie so be aware of that.

Thanks to #manpowered for hosting the movie.

Nilbog killing Onyxia (91 comments)

The dragon queen Onyxia is by far the most famous of all bosses in World of Warcraft. It took Korea many months until they were geared up enough to kill her, and the States even longer. However, in Europe it was done within two months, mainly due to the tactics being much better developed by then.

This is a movie by the Swedish guild Nilbog who were among the first in Europe to kill her. It is a true school example on how to do it, from start to end the strategies works flawlessly. If you are not familiar with Onyxia, a lot of the tactics may seem odd, such as the Shaman just running back and forth with his back turned against the dragon instead of doing something useful. However, this is to prevent him from being feared into the lava and conserving mana for the last 5% in which the dragon goes into a frenzy. It is a lot of details like that you have to get just right in order to get her down, it is no wonder it took so long before she was finally beaten.

The ventrilo chat during the fight is a mix of both English and Swedish.

Cheers to Souls of Eternity for hosting the file.

I made a World of Warcraft video on how to reach the secret island south of Kalimdor as well as reaching the end of the world. Took quite a bit of nifty tricks to reach it, including waterwalk, swiftness, reincarnate and more.

It uses the 3ivx D4 4.5.1 Pro Video Codec.

What should news posts look like? (No comments, locked)
Posted by Paladia @ 10:12 CDT, 16 May 2004 - iMsg
How should flags, names and clans be handled?

The first time a name important to the post appears (clan or player), make it bold and with the flag before the name: [flag=se] LakermaN. The second time just write out the name without any tags. If all or most entries in the post are from the same country no flag is necessary, it is better to write out their nationality. For example:
In an all Swedish fight, Paladia and raccoon are facing the defending champions, Fox and Zamuz
It is important to note that you should absolutely not display the flags if you have written out the nation or nationality. If the number of flags in a post is above five or so, depending a bit on the lenght of the post (not including those in hide tags) you may want to reconsider your design by either removing the flags or adding hide tags.

How should I write out the source?

Display it using the bold tag at the bottom of the post:

Source: ESReality.com

How should images be handled?

Upload a small image related to the post as an inline image. This will make it appear on the upper right corner of the post and often make your post look a bit more attractive. The size limitation for the inline image of a majored post is 180x120px.

When should I use the hide tag?

The hide tag should be used if your post is long (more than half a page), contains spoilers some people may not want to know about or contains a list (of for example results). Excessive number of hide tags will clutter the post, making it hard to read. So while one hide tag can often improve the layout of your post, it is best to use as few as possible above one.

Most of my post contains material or quotes from another site, how should I handle it?

Use a small snippet and then link back to the original post with due credit. These and all other quotes should be done using the blockquote tag:
This is a quote.

What categories should I pick for my post?

The most important rule is to pick as few categories as possible, in almost all cases just one category will do. In the other cases it will most likely work to just pick the "Gaming" category, only in exceptional cases should you pick more than one category.

Can you give me an example of a good layout and tell me why it is good?

This post is an example of good layout. This is due to the names that are most important have a flag the first time they are mentioned, those semi important to the post are in bold the first time and without tags the second time. This keeps the post free from clutter. On top of that it has a unique inline picture which makes it look a bit more attractive, there are two hide tags which work fine since they both cover totally different lists and all the sources are mentioned. Smaller things to note are that the focus word $200,000 is in bold and only one category is picked. The post is a bit long but that works fine since all the visible content is written by the author and has little interrupting the flow.

How should I use links?

Do not link by just writing the url, the url tags are there for a reason, use them or your post will look very poor (this includes IRC links). Try to find a word in the post that you can turn into a link to keep the flow going. This instead of making up a word just for the link, for example:
You can download the patch required to upgrade.
Is better than:
You can download the patch required to upgrade: here

Should I make it major or minor news?

As a general rule, if the news you have written about is of interest to a majority of the readers in the category you have chosen, then it should be major. One exception to this rule is the off topic category, OT news should not be major regardless.

I don't speak English very well, how should I go about?

Do your best and post it as minor news. If you think it should be major news then post the "Tidy up & make major" admin request because the front page must have proper English. Sometimes the admins are busy or away so if possible try to convince a friend who is skilled in English to proof read it for you.

I have a personal opinion regarding the news, should I write it out in the news post?

As a general rule, while insight is certainly good, your opinion is not more valuable than anyone elses and hence should be left for the comments. You should not use "I" or "me" in a news item. If your opinion is part of a larger opinion however, it is often a good idea to share it in order to bring more depth into your post. For example:
The recent patch to World of Warcraft has brought quite a bit of controversy, as parts of the hardcore PvE community thinks Blizzard are catering too much to the casual players at the expense of end game content.

What are all these tags you are talking about, how do I use them?

Due to the nature of the ESReality board, replace the { with a [

Hints for major news by Badb0y

- Take a look at the other majored news on the front page to get a feeling of the design and structure. It only takes seconds and it really helps to design a proper news. To only copy & paste a news from another website will not work.

- Inline image / logo in the right corner must be 180x120 pixels maximum. Please respect this limit. There are exceptions for hard cases if it doesn't fit.

You can resize the image with the resize function when you edit the post (at the very end of the form) or use the free tool Irfanview. If someone uses an incorrect size, there will be a wave of followers and the admins will have more work with resizing.

- There shouldn't be a big image in the body of the news, ESReality is primarily text based. If you want bigger images in the news, you can hide it with the hide tags.

- Same goes for embed videos. If you want YouTube in the news, use the hide tags.

- Don't overuse underlined or bold text. It looks awful and serve no purpose.

- For dates and times, you should use our time tags.

- Using "here" or "click here" links must be avoided. Use your imagination to use more specific information (topic of the link, name of the website/thread...)

If we can manage to keep a good looking front page, your post will get more visibility and therefor more promotion. It's a win/win situation.

Starcraft happenings (98 comments)

The largest transition in esports history has been upon us, the successful pro-gamer Korea (Republic of) Nal_rA got a wooping $200,000 for switching to team KTF. Nal_rA has been doing very well recently, getting to the finals of the three recent tournaments he has participated in and winning two of those. Together with NaDa he is generally considered the best Starcraft player at the moment. KTF also recruited the prominent zerg player Korea (Republic of) YellOw, giving him a salary of $85,000 per year. So KTF are looking very strong, with players such as the aforementioned Nal_rA and Yellow, as well as Chojja, Reach and Sync.

Shortly after Nal_rA and Yellow joined KTF, Boxer's team, 4U, announced a new sponsor. It is the largest telecom company in Korea, SK Telecom, who will be sponsoring the team. The contract with Korea (Republic of) Boxer is said to be even better than the $200,000 Nal_rA got, but no numbers have been mentioned. Apart from that salary, the team will also get a 3550 sq office and a 12 seat van.

The official rankings made by the Korea E-Sports Association have been updated. Worth mentioning is Nal_rA who is the first Protoss player ever to reach the top2 and WCG winner Korea (Republic of) Ogogo who was not ranked in the previous update is now at #9. He is also the only one on the list who does not belong to a team. All the players except Canada Grrrr... and France Elky are Koreans, though both Grrr and Elky live and play in Korea.

If you ever wished you could hear BoxeR, NaDa, Yellow, ToSsGirL, TheMarine and the other pro-gamers sing, your dream has come true. They have released an album with only pro-gamers singing. How good it sounds? Well, I best let you decide that for yourself :) (note that you need a player capable of streaming wma to listen to them, such as Windows Media player)

South Korea has dozens of Starcraft professionals, and has done for over five years now. In a country that has two TV stations dedicated to the game, where school children everywhere know the players, and where finals have been known to draw 8,000 people to watch the game - LIVE - which player has dominated the scene for four years and is still going strong?

Lim Yo-Hwan, a.k.a SlayerS_'BoxeR' has a fan club with 100,000 members. He has won more televised tournaments than most the people in this competition have attended LANs. He has a regular wage that is several times the national average, and more income from endorsements and tournament prizes than I care to calculate. He has won two World Cyber Games in a row, written books, used his name to help sell chocolate - is there anyone else on this poll who has done even half as much?

However, it's dominating arguably the most popular competitive online game - there are more people on battle.net with Starcraft than there are with Warcraft 3 or on a Counter-Strike server at the moment - against scores of other professionals, that makes Boxer the most deserving recipient of this award. Voting against him just because you haven't heard of him until today, or because he doesn't play Quake, would be an admission that skill or influence on the world of gaming is being ignored.

With this team he should win, among others, five CPL events, including that legendary clash of the continents when his team defeated America's X3 in the final. When NiP more or less disbanded, SK signed him up. Under his direction SK became arguably the strongest team in the world. It's otiose to recount his successes.

yle="font-family: verdana; font-size: 10pt; color: #fff; font-weight: bold;"> PROFILE

yle="font-family: arial; font-size: 7pt; color: #fff; font-weight: bold;" valign="top"> Roman 'Polosatiy' Tarasenko may not be as revered as his illustrious opponent here but he remains the true gamer's choice. In an on-going career spanning over six years 'Polos' never shied away from competition, participating in almost 90 LAN tournaments and winning a remarkable 35.

Arguably the best Quake 2 player in his ultra-competitive homeland, he went from tasting victory in the first FFA competition to winning most of the later duel tournaments and leading the number one clan. Polos also became renowned for his trick-jumping prowess, releasing a demo pack which became part of Q2 folklore. With the release of Quake 3, he and his clan dominated many of the early tournaments whilst remaining the best Russian Q2 side and placing highly in 1v1. What is more, he won the main Russian UT duel tournament in the same year, again underlining his multi-gaming credentials.

Nor was he without success on the international scene. He led Russia to victory in Q3 over Sweden at the BWEC in 2000 with some stellar performances in what was one of the most dramatic and prestigious tournaments in gaming history. At CPL Cologne in the same year he beat Lakerman to take second place behind fatal1ty and then led 4z to second place at EC2, beating the Allstars in the process. With Quake 3 at its peak, these performances confirmed Polos as one of the all-time greats. He continued to succeed in Russian tournaments against formidable opposition until late 2002 when he turned his attention to UT2k3. His first real success came at PG Challenge in 2003, coming second in UT2k3 and winning Quake 3 whilst also competing in Warcraft 3.

But Polos is more than just a consistent player and leader. He's the true father of Russian Quake and the touchstone of the 'Russian style' that strongly influences how the game is played to this day. He invented the now archetypal keyboard-on-lap, high fov, high sens, hit and run game that players like Cooller employ today. He also finds time to run a major esports site, conducting countless interviews and reports. It's rumoured that in friendlies at events he covers, he still beats Cooller regularly. He's a legend in his own right: other players may be great, but only Polos is rulez.

yle="font-family: verdana; font-size: 10pt; color: #fff; font-weight: bold;"> PROFILE

yle="font-family: arial; font-size: 7pt; color: #fff; font-weight: bold;" valign="top"> Counter-Strike is approaching its fifth anniversary. During this time the game has seen many players. But only a few have been around almost all the time. One of them is Tommy 'Potti' Ingemarsson. Through his impressive skill and the unusual ability to downright out-think his opponents he's secured himself a place in the sun.

Let's take a look at his career. His first clans where Allstars and 9. Then, back in 2000 he gathered the most talented players in Sweden and united them under the notorious 'Ninjas in Pyjamas' tag. With this team he should win, among others, five CPL events, including that legendary clash of the continents when his team defeated America's X3 in the final. When NiP more or less disbanded, SK signed him up. Under his direction SK became arguably the strongest team in the world. It's otiose to recount his successes.

Potti is not only the archetype of a Counter-Strike player but more general the prototype of a professional gamer. He's been around since the first days of the game and he's always been on top, he's not only steady in what he does, he's also successful in it. Therefore he is not only admired by Counter-Strikers but also by gamers of other disciplines.

In this replay, EchoOfRain makes one of the most innovative and most effective counters I have ever seen against the vulch/tank/turret combo. The replay is also called "A million man march", a very fitting name. This is actually the only replay ever that has made me laugh in real life :)

A new movie has been released by Valve to showcase the DirectX 9.0 Effects of their Source engine. The 115 MB movie is probably the most impressive movie from Half-life 2 as of yet, at least graphics wise. It utilizes the self playing Bink video technology. Keep in mind that this is a completely new trailer, it is not from the E3 presentation.

How to play back SC demos

Sweden iG-TreK-PL faces the leader of the WGTour ladder, Korean pro-gamer Korea (Republic of) aNc-ArtTerran in a best out of three series.

The first game has been mentioned as "Game of the Year" on StarcraftGamers. It showcases some very interesting tactics by Trek, but also quite an innovative counter by Art. The third game is also a great game. The zip-file contains all three games.

Clanbase promoting repetitive play (102 comments)
Posted by Paladia @ 09:07 CDT, 29 May 2003 - iMsg
One common comment you can read on this very site is "If I see another DM6 game I think I'm going to puke!" or "DM7 is so boring to watch!". Does this mean DM7 or DM6 are bad or boring maps? Not at all, there are reasons for them being so popular, the main reason is because they are in fact good maps. The real reason behind those kinds of comments is the same reason as to why we change haircuts or why we have different sets of clothing. We find little fun in doing or watching the same thing over and over, there is simply nothing fun in repetitiveness. Whilst DM7 and DM6 are indeed good maps, we have played and watched them far too much to find any greater satisfaction in watching another DM7-game.

There are many great maps out there made by the mod and map-community, for example Overkill. However, several problems occur when introducing a custom-made map, such as everyone having to download it, including all the server admins and spectators (who wishes to watch the game on GTV). The main tournament and ladder organizers would have to add it as well. Also, all players would have to relearn a brand new map, something few are fond of; it may be a bit too late to introduce totally new maps to the community.

One of the aspects that I, and many others, liked best with Quake 1 was that each team got to choose a home map from any of the standard IDSoftware maps. I remember one time when my clan played a clan war against Euthanasia and they had E3M2 as their home map, a map none of us had ever played before. The thing with E3M2 is that the rocket launcher is hidden in a secret room, so my friends and I ran around frantically, trying to find the only weapon that actually does some damage as a HPW, the RL. But since we failed to find it, we got angrier as we lost more and more frags. Soon enough comments like “WHERE THE HELL IS THE ROCKET LAUNCHER?!” started to arise from my team, needless to say, we lost that map with numbers higher than I dare to admit. After that, we picked ourselves an obscure map: Wind Tunnels :)

Sure, those maps were not the best balanced or optimized for TDM, but they were still very enjoyable to play and watch. While the maps today we play in Q3 are extremely well balanced, they are almost too balanced, making it boring to watch, especially for the thousandth time. As I mentioned earlier, implementing totally new maps is not very practical for a number of reasons, so we have to look for other solutions. What it came down to is the same solution as for QW; play more of the standard maps. Q3 has a lot of good maps, made by some of the best professional mappers in the world. Take Q3DM8 and Q3DM12 for instance two high-quality maps which are never played, mainly due to circumstances, not because of their quality. Q3 also features several interesting and fun power-ups, most of which are sadly forgotten. Why aren't any maps with regeneration, haste or invisibility played? They are not overpowered in any way, but would rather add diversity and make the game more fun to watch; and play.

To help understand what needs to be done, and the problems with introducing some of the older maps into the maplist, I have (with the help of raccoon) gathered some comments by players opposed to my idea. Granted, they have not heard my arguments, but they were asked this question:

What would you think if one of the major leagues (Clanbase in Europe) added more of the original Q3-maps into their TDM maplist, for instance Q3DM8 and Q3DM12. Would the added diversity with those maps, as well as the power-up “invisibility”, increase or decrease the fun? Would it decrease or increase gameplay?

Ic-fox: Having a large amount of maps availible would decrease the quality in my opinion. No clan would know all maps equally well and everyone would have their favorite which they would always win :P This would probably result in many 2-1 or 3-2 matches which, I suppose, is good for the spectators. But from a players point of view, the way it is now is the most fair. Everyone knows all the maps and you really have to be better to win these days. Rather then just practising a map that no one's heard of. Every now and then, a new map could be added. But not too many at once :/
It’s interesting to hear fox mention “Everyone knows all the maps and you really have to be better to win”. Shouldn’t knowing a map more than your opponent be a factor in who is better? Right now, with so few maps in rotation, map-knowledge is a very small factor. Since everyone knows all the maps more or less equally well, it makes the difference in watching a game from separate point of views very small, only thing separating them being aim and some movement. He does bring out a good point though, perhaps adding too many maps at once wouldn’t be such a good idea so late in the game. Even if most clans should already know the standard Q3-maps.

[EYE]Fazz: It would prolly increase the joy of watching the game but it would for sure decrease the fun of playing it since those maps are bad imo. And the invisibility thing is kinda stupid since u can a invisible guy more or less depending on your config. If we wanna add new maps then add NEW maps, they were removed for a reason. Try tweak the haste powerup so u get like more aircontrol and fast rl's and add it on a new good map. That would make it intresting imo.
Just like fox, fazz admits adding those maps would increase the fun for spectators. He also mentions adding completely new maps, which is not very feasible due to reasons mentioned already. Were DM8 or DM12 not chosen as maps in tournaments because they are bad, or because of circumstance? Impossible to answer of course, but if you have played some on them, it is hard to believe that they are bad maps. Concerning invisibility being more visible in some configs (an argument I heared from others as well), the same could be said about the ordinary player, they are also more or less visible depending on cfg. However, I like what he says about the haste power-up though, in that he suggests tweaking in order to make it more attractive.

forZe|Mikes: q3dm8 was played in russia 4x4 before, but for this moment it's too small map so no and q3dm12 is ugly map imo so no too :D and ivisibility powerup which diffs for different configs on one u can see it very good, and on others absolutely nothing
This is very interesting, Mikes claims Q3DM8 was indeed a popular map in Russia, but was later removed due to it being “too small”. It was never played in the rest of Europe, I’m quite sure that was deciding factor as the game became more internationally played. Q3DM6 was also deemed too small for TDM at outset, but now it is the single most popular map in Q3 (note: Q3DM8 is not smaller than Q3DM6).

BITCHSLAYRE519: keep dm8 out dm12 is a good map for gameplay/strategy, plus invisibility doesn't even work in q3, dm12 is the 519werkz
Personal opinions are always a factor, Bitchslayer does however seem fond of DM12.

Raccoon (organizer of QLAN): As i've had this discussion with you some time ago, I'm still stating
that the original maps (other than today's 'official' ones) just doesn't
have the calibre when it comes to strategic layout/placement. Hub3tourney1
should be added to the maplist again though, it was/is one of the best duel
maps of all time.

The only powerup i can ever think of having in a game except quad/batsuit
is probably Regeneration, but not in combination with Quad or BS, that
would make it too superior.

Imagine yourself using the flight p-up in an official TDM game? No way, José. The same goes with Invisibility. As fazz said, imagine meeting an opponent with Invisibility and your vidres @ 512x384, texmode @ GL_NEAREST and picmip 5. There you have _complete_ invisibility. No fun, eh?

Haste. See fazz's comment about it, and rename the powerup to "QuakeWorld Mode".
A few points to note, I agree some maps require the item placements to be swapped around, since a few are not very logical at all. Raccoon claims quad would be too powerful together with regeneration, yet one of the most popular maps (Q3DM14) features both BS and quad, a much more powerful combination and I have not heard any profound complains about that. But item placement and spawn time assures us they are not combined too often. I find the flight power-up to be very useful, perhaps it should be added to hub3tourney1? :)

To give us some greater perspective on the issue, let us listen to what those specialized on spectating the game has to say.

KIT|Methos: I think it all depends on how many maps are being allowed in the tournament. While some players are happy playing the classic maps, other find that they are boring to play and watch. On the other hand, there are many players that don't have the time to learn new maps. I've seen so many games where players need to download maps just to play in a match.
Taking your idea of having more original maps is nice in theory but, it still leads to the same problem. The players either dislike the map or they don't know the pertinent teamplay aspects of the map. Having said that, if a new tourney was to start, I don't think having one new map would hurt things that much. Personally, I'm against bringing in new maps because it enables some teams to use the "I don't know this map" excuse.

In the last two tournaments that I have run, there has been a mixture of old and new maps available to choose from. In both of the tourneys, 3 of the top 4 maps used were "classic" maps. The combined popularity of the maps were Pro-Q3dm6 (23%), DM7 (16%), DM14 (15%) & CPM4 (14%). As you can see, only CPM4 was able to break into the top 4 as a non-classic map. I had the same opinion as you, and I brought back DM12 for these tourneys, DM12 was the least played map at 6% in both of them.

Paladia (follow-up question): Do you think the added diversity with that map being played (although rarely) increased the fun for the spectators?

KIT|Methos: Yes, I do think think that adding DM12 and other maps add to enjoyment for the spectators, but at what cost to the caliber of play is yet to be determined. If DM12 becomes another map that players are unfamiliar with, it won't help the tournament very much.
Methos really knows what he is talking about, he is even backing up his opinion with statistics. He does point out that adding DM12 adds to the enjoyment for the spectators but may or may not decrease the gameplay for the players. For it to be determined it should be given a chance.

DjWHEAT: invisibility would be worthless in osp but i think q3dm12 is a great map with dual powerup and no rail it shows a teams control potential without being incredible aimers, teamplay wins q3dm12 over aim, q3dm8 is very similar in that aspect, possibly a tmp remake of it
Wheat is also mainly a spectator, capable of seeing the game from an objective perspective. What separates him from the rest is that he is actually pointing how the teamplay benefits of those two maps. A tmp remake of Q3DM8 is definitely something to consider, to balance out the item placements.

As you can see, the players are a bit negative when it comes to adding a few standard maps into rotation. Whilst the two spectator representatives are more positive. An interesting observation is that no one except fazz answered the “Would it increase or decrease the fun?”-question. Do the players know what is best for them? In most cases, no. An example here is the issue regarding the size of the goalkeeper’s equipment in the NHL. Most spectators want to see more goals scored during a game, so the NHL-association are decreasing the size of the goalkeeper’s equipment in order to make it more spectator friendly. The players are against this, since it would make it too easy for random goals to slip in and would make it harder to defend according to them. However, there is a saying, the customer is always right, in this case the spectators are the customers.

This is where organizations such as Clanbase are making a mistake, they are promoting repetitive play by only allowing the same maps to be played, over and over. It decreases the enjoyment for the spectators, which ultimately decreases the fun for the players. If esports is ever to become a large professional sport, the participants will have to amend for the sake of the spectators. The question is fairly simple: Would you rather watch two good clans playing yet another game on DM6 or the very same clans playing on DM12? To me the answer is obvious.

How to play back SC demos

In the Gamingeye KOTH tournament two of the best Swedish players ever faces each other in a best of five series.

I dare to say that these are some of the best games ever performed by Swedish players. SaFT really shows how well he handles his trademark, the devastating Protoss Carriers.

Maps:

Dire Straits
River of Flames
Lost Temple
Neo Silent Vortex

The pack contains all four games.

Note that these games require the Brood War expansion, the maps are as always included in the replays.
