QCon: where Guitar Hero beats Quake (404 comments)
Posted by Carmac @ 13:22 CDT, 12 August 2008 - iMsg
It is been over a week since QuakeCon's final was played but not everything about it has been written. The story of the closing show of QuakeCon did not quite make it to the esports press until today.

A new video and a column by Carmac show an interesting perspective on an event where they encourage people to leave before the QuakeLive final starts and players have to wait three hours to start playing.

Here is a mandatory quotation from the article:
Then we sat through over an hour of Guitar Hero 3, a Quake tattoo show, a quick draw match, a Bawls drinking contest, about an hour or more of t-shirt throwing and contests for the first people to bring a bra / a pokemon item / whatever else to Marty Stratton for a Corvette lottery ticket. The list is longer but I would rather forget than remember the items on it.

The finalists sat tired and hungry, and jetlagged in the case of Cypher, as this dragged on for three hours while Hollenshead and Stratton took their sweet time entertaining the public.

You can read the entire thing right here.

QCON Quake Live pre-final video footage (3 comments)
Posted by Bob @ 13:06 CDT, 12 August 2008 - iMsg
Poland Michal "Carmac" Blicharz of SK Gaming has released footage of a presentation taking place on stage before the Quake Live 1v1 finals at Quakecon.

The footage includes Netherlands Vo0 chatting up an unknown girl and another girl giving away a bra in exchange for a ticket for a prize draw. It also shows Belarus Cypher being told he has to wait until it's all done as well as how the MCs have no idea about the Quake Live tournament that took place or previous Quakecons.

It's worth a watch so make sure you check it out.

Carmac has also written up his thoughts on the event over at SK Gaming.
Exerpt:
"The finalists sat tired and hungry, and jetlagged in the case of Cypher, as this dragged on for three hours while Hollenshead and Stratton took their sweet time entertaining the public."

id Press Conference & Carmack Highlights (93 comments)
Posted by RogeR1 @ 23:02 CDT, 31 July 2008 - iMsg
QuakeUnity.com has a write up on the id Software press conference and John Carmack keynote. A much smaller than usual crowd was on hand to listen to id Software's press conference followed by John Carmack's keynote here at QuakeCon 2008.

The main highlights of the press conference were the official DOOM4 announcement and the announcement of Wolfenstien RPG and Doom II RPG from id Mobile, the cell phone gaming division of the company. Very little new information was given about id's upcoming title Rage. Compared to last year's very exciting announcements of Quake Live and the Wolfenstein movie, this year was fairly uneventful.

I'll be working on getting the video up sometime tomorrow. Technical difficulties relating to being rushed to setup and not being able to properly test our equipment before are the reasons for the delay. :(

Quake Live Debuts To Masses At QuakeCon (175 comments)
Posted by Slasher @ 20:51 CDT, 30 July 2008 - iMsg
QuakeUnity will be providing exclusive video coverage of QuakeCon 2008's tournaments, which will include the debut of public footage from id software's new project, Quake Live. Starting Thursday, July 31st, the QuakeUnity coverage team will be live on-site in Dallas, providing video-on-demand high definition video as well as live audio for the $12,500 Quake Live 1v1 and the $12,500 Quake Live 4v4 CTF tournaments. These tournaments will showcase the first public footage of id software's return to Quake. Footage will also be available of John Carmack's keynote as well as any other special presentations by id.

Former Radio iTG commentator Canada Stuart "Django" Ewen and Quake journalist United States of America Rod "Slasher" Breslau will be broadcasting matches along with various special guests throughout the weekend. All videos will be produced on-site in 720p high definition and be made available for download and streaming via flash video very soon after they are shot. Multiple versions of each video will be available for download along with the option of choosing either a high quality h264 or a standard quality flash video stream.

Several of the best Quake 3 players in the world will be on-hand to play in the Quake Live tournaments and showcase their skills for the world. Legendary professional gaming multi-millionaire United States of America Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel will be on hand to give his thoughts about the future of the Quake series. Currently the spokesman of the Championship Gaming Series, Wendel jump-started his gaming career and business franchise by winning Quake 3 tournaments nearly a decade ago. Wendel will be joined on-hand by his CPL World Tour rival Dutchman Netherlands Sander "Vo0" Kaasjager, American Quake 3 superstar United States of America John "ZeRo4" Hill, and the ESWC Masters 2008 Q3 champion, Belarus Alexey "Cypher" Yanushevsky.

QuakeUnity will be conducting it's own lengthy interview with both John Carmack and Marty Stratton at QuakeCon. All things Quake Live will be discussed in addition to forthcoming titles Doom 4, Rage, Wolfenstein 2, and what's going on with the next Quake Arena game.

Joe “nineX” Szymkowicz had a chance to sit down with United States of America Shane “rapha” Hendrixson, of SK-Gaming, after his trip to the ESWC Masters Quake 3 competition. Exhausted from the combination of jet-lag and an intense field of competition, Rapha talked about his future in gaming and some topics swirling around the deathmatch community.

Head on over to GGL-Wire for the complete interview and keep an eye out for more interviews from the ESWC players.

Quake 3 Map Statistics: October 2008 (38 comments)
Posted by cYmoZz @ 13:24 CDT, 30 July 2008 - iMsg
I made a little statistic how well the top players did on the different maps. I considered every player who attended at least two of the big Q3 events in 2008: eswc ESWC Masters Paris, GameGune, eswc ESWC Finals or eswc ESWC Masters Athen.

Top 5 on each map (min. 4 games on the specific map):

"player name" "number of wins" / "number of matches"

ZTN is the only map which is not removed on a regular basis by all listed players.
Only a few players seem to feel comfortable on all maps.

There might be some errors, if you find one, please post it.
