2233rz is a MAJOR DIFFERENCE between any other lcd monitor i;ve ever tried. 199 is also really cheap, mine was about 300$ I think.

Yes you can use 120hz on non-native. I don't use 1680x1050 and am able to have it on 120hz.

At the moment all we have is 22" lcds with a native res of 1680x1050. Asus will soon release a 24" lcd running at 120hz that is full HD, 1920x1080. Until that comes out, there is no better monitor for gaming than the 2233rz.

HD is a huge selling point for games, movies, and tvs right now. So I believe it's going to be a new standard for computer monitors. At least ones designed specifically for games like a 120hz monitor. I wouldn't be surprised if more and more monitors used 1920x1080. Personally I think it's good. The wider the aspect the better it's suited for multitasking (windows side by side ezpz). It's the same reason I have two monitors and not one enormous one.

I did explain myself. The wider aspect ratio allows for more squarish windows side by side on your display. Therefore better suited for multitasking. HD became a selling point for video games because of hd dvd's and blueray discs, both for their respective consoles. The general public thinks of HD as the highest fidelity in movies and games because of consoles and tvs. HD is a selling point, it always has been and always will be. Veteran pc gamers and technology enthusiasts know better but just because you do, doesn't mean everyone else does. The term HD has even spilled over to other markets, such as radio, which has nothing to do with resolutions clearly. It's the terminology that is marketed.

While the term has not been exploited much for PC Games, I'm sure it will be in the future. In fact, I think it's foolish not to use it seeing as how widely recognized the term is. It's a selling point for xbox 360 and playstation over the wii, so why not PC.

HD DVD, HD TV, HD Channels, HD Displays, HD Radio, HD Consoles, HD Games, HD Headphones. Look around you.

I wouldn't consider 120 pixels a scam, as the wider aspect ratio fits my personal work flow better. My initial response was in regard to the marketability of the term HD. I don't think it's a scam but I do think it's a silly term. However, at this point in time with such a large portion of the market thinking in terms of HD and SD you'd have to be foolish not to use HD in the marketing of any type of display.

Yes, more squarish windows side by side is more important to me. To clarify what we are talking about, it's 120 pixels. I wouldn't care if all displays still used 1920x1200. Just saying I welcome wider aspect ratios because they are more intuitive for my personal work flow.

i bought mine for 250, but still think that even 199 is too high. the viewing angles are impossible, and it's impossible or extremely difficult to adjust the screen position: bad idea. backlight bleeding or whatever it is called is just ridiculous, you can practically read by this backlight.

and for some reason, the monitor is not very good for my eyes, they are sore like hell by the end of each day (i don't know what it is, whether it's the brightness or something else, but i never had such issues with any other lcd monitors). so i will surely be changing it for something else. asus maybe.

but 120 hz is fantastic actually, never knew the difference could be so obvious.

well, I'm not really into technical stuff, but it really looks amazing! Please make note that this is my first LCD monitor, so I might easily be amazed.

After some tweaking with the colors & resolutions (1680x1050) I immediately went to play some QL of course =), switched to r_displayrefresh 120, and then tried out several resolutions. Seems I can't go higher than 1680x1058(16:10); for example on 1600x1200(4:3) QL won't start. I don't know if that's normal, and I don't know what resolution you guys play on, all I know it goes ultra smooth on the current settings. I even forgot I had to pee rather urgently, nuff said!

I recently bought some new computer parts (MSI x58 Platinum Motherboard, Intel I7 processor, 6GB RAM, GeForce GTX 275), yet it feels smoother now, even some jumps are easier. Didn't expect a monitor could influence this so much.
For the time being I have not a bad word to say about this monitor. If you want me to test some things, feel free to ask!

my trusty old crt broke so had to buy one of these :-/ i'm not too excited but i'm guessing it'll be good enough. cost me 280e :(((. viewing angles are the thing i'm most worried about with this purchase.

lololololo got the monitor to only find out i've been screwed. my graphics card is geforce 8800gt wich is found on every fucking compatibility list conserning geforce and 2233rz but the image gets fucked up if i try to change the refresh rate over 60. nice :DDDDDDDDDDDD

updated the drivers for the monitor and GPU both. don't know what to do anymore

In a couple of reviews I've seen, the viewsonic is rated better than the samsung. Also, I don't really know what this means but I read that the viewsonic has no input lag where as the samsung does? :o
I'm ordering a viewsonic 120hz very soon.

i've got both and much prefer the samsung.

the viewsonic screen messes up for about 5 seconds whenever it or my other monitor changes resolution. i also cannot get it to work at 120hz on anything other than native resolution.

so obviously i MUCH prefer the samsung 2233rz. i'd really advise you to go for it instead of the viewsonic.

Im happy with my viewsonic. But that is probably because i just keep native resolution on desktop and games. Its soo nice playing in 1680. :D

I might just take your advice on that dude. I've only read a couple of comparison reviews on hardware websites and who's to say you can trust those...

there are a bunch of conflicting reviews, and there is a bunch of conflicting data. but honestly, even if there is slightly less input delay in the viewsonic, you won't actually notice it, because it won't be near-instantaneous like a crt anyway, but it's close enough for sure. considering you can have 120hz in any resolution as well as the colours being awesome and tft'ified (the backlight bleeding isn't even noticable for me) everything outweighs that tiny delay that you have, which you get used to quickly anyways. the only game that even really felt truly different to a crt for me was quakeworld, and with a few clientside tweaks now i don't even notice it, it feels great considering its a tft.

edit: forgot to mention i'm on a 2233rz!

Just got mine. Can't try it out atm but as noted before the stand is really wobbly, might want to take that into consideration when thinking about getting one. Moving my mouse across the pad a little faster already makes the screen shake..

my desk isn't perfect but it's the only one I got and a better stand would help for sure.. i'm thiking about sending the 2233rz back and getting the new acer 120hz when it's out.

yeah the stand isn't that good, which makes it wobble a bit if you touch it. but you must have an unstable desk or something for it to be wobbling by you just moving your mouse :o.

blame ikea ;) Seriously though, it's not the most stable desk I've ever seen but still nothing out of the ordinary. I think I got it to be quite a bit better by placing the desk right next to the wall though so I'm gonna try how it feels when playing as soon as my new pc arrives. Really makes you wonder why manufacturers don't get things like this straight though.. also is it that difficult to add a second input (hdmi..)?

it's ATI's fault since their win7 driver suck ass. only way to get around that at the moment is dual booting win xp or buying an nvidia card.

aaargh don't really want to do either of those. literally just got this pc and new monitor yesterday. ah well :( will figure something out! is there no way to 'edit' the ati drivers to force 120hz at lower res'- surely there's someone out there that'd know how to do that :D or maybe there are alternative ati drivers that might work? i remember there being 2 or 3 other drivers for nvidia other than the official ones but can't remember what they were called :(

Enable scaling in the setup. I have the same screen and a HD4830 card and it works fine. But why would you want to play in 800x600? You can't get 120hz then..

he's on windows 7... if you tell me you're on w7 with the 2233rz and an ATI card AND your scaling works, i call bullshit :)

I'm going to on a quest to find a 'tecchy' guy that might be able to edit some random file in the drivers or something that will allow scaling down from native res' at any refresh rate! Surely if I give 'em the xp drivers then the windows 7 drivers they'll figure something out :D

I'm in native resolution but because of a bug, scaling doesn't work in Win7 with non-legacy drivers. So you and I have to go down to a lower resolution.


Picking a lower res..


Now go here..


And voila...


Select your old resolution again and you are set..

It really doesn't work? Looks easy from the pictures. I've got an ATI 4870 card and have considered the 2233rz but if you're having so much trouble with it then I dunno...

That said, I think spartie uses a 4850 and a 2233rz so I'm sure it's possible

Soo, after having played a couple of hours of quake on it I must say that the monitor is working really really good for me. As I said the stand sucks but it should be fine if you have a stable desk.
The one thing that really bugs me is that it only has one dvi input. I don't really want to be plugging the cable in and out of my graphic card all the time and be messing around with hdmi=>dvi-d adapters. Since my netbook is perfectly capable of doing everything I want to do apart from gaming it would surely safe A LOT of money if was to use it when not playing.

My advise would be to get this monitor if you, like me, absolutely have to get one NOW and you probably won't regret it but if you have a working monitor I'd stick with it for the time being and get a 120hz tft when there are models available that are cheaper and/or have better connectivity.

i have both the 2233rz and viewsonic vx2268 both 120 hz ofc and i can tell you good and bad on both sides

view sonic has speakers ,is brighter,has a thinner bezel but has a few teething issues,has a flimsy tilt ... i had to unplug then replug in the power in or i get weird dots in the pic @ 120 hz.

samsung has more realistic colouring (my opinion) ,looks better (again my opinion) ,has a better stand (but is 2 inches lower),has a better/stronger tilt and better contrast

both monitors work very well @ 120 hz and are very smooth also to note the vx has a slightly worse back light bleed but i think its due to the higher brightness

coming from the iiyama 514 pro (R.I.P.) i can tell you if you think 120 hz wont make a differance it will!! =0) go get one !! hf
