come on, we both know thats a lie. if you want to play 4v4 you're limited to 3 maps being played actively, and all of them were boring already when i played qw. and thats like over 10 years ago. it is also the main reason why we didnt bother with a 'proper' comeback with some friends. i'd even argue atleast one of those three maps is truly horrid, but i know its pointless to argue about any new points of view with old school qw'ers

Amazing stuff, really. Love the nostalgia, the patience, kinda slow atmosphere of it. Just by seeing it feels like Quake is not only a game for those, "old" already, people.

Oh yeah, I was there (on #qwrookie) last year before that rookie tournament that was announced somewhere here in ESR.

So one dude wanted to play some new map, he was much better and destroyed me, which was ok but not exactly kind of practice I expected. But when I stopped with score like 10:1 and started chatting to him, asking how to forfeit the game, he chatfragged me 3 times very quickly. So I /quit, easy.

Then I look and he's an op on that channel. The helpful channel for noobs. So yeah, I left immediately.

I can't believe anyone says QW has better community than QL. QL has a sizable and varied community, but also tens of thousands of people that aren't the community and just play. In QW there's 100 people waiting to finally rape someone after losing to ParadokS etc. for years. Hell, even on Phil's podcast show there was a talk about teams dropping from EQL or something after being put to top division and players joining lower teams. Great community or what?

And the video summarizes this very nicely: the top QW player expressing regret about the game dying out and how it needs fresh blood, but then asking how to get rid of a kid that had fun in QW...

Yep. Lots of new guys come to QW with agendas and never it give it a fair shot. Usually they play a few mins and nitpick stupid stuff then ragequit.

Look, a guy is operating a rookie help channel. I was expecting him to help me start with the game, meanwhile all he cared for was luring a complete newb to the server and getting as much frags as he could, maybe for some rating.

It's your community that needs fresh blood. It's your loss not mine. Time to realize this.

And I haven't ragequit QW completely, I still play FFA like once in a month, it's quite fun even though there's always someone doing 150 frags in 12 minutes. Even when I got few friends to try out nQuake and we've all joined an empty "XS4ALL ROOKIE FFA" server (please note the name), someone joined and started destroying us all and one by one we quit. Damn, I'm whining again.

hint: i'm also a qw rookie (kinda) idling in that chan and i love it.

Back then there were like 5 people with ops, everyone was given voice for whatever reason (channel wasn't +m).

Why does it even matter? Point is: QW nowadays is low tier players releasing their frustration on the really new people and it goes on to higher levels, which includes high-mid players preferring to play mid-level teams/compos instead of challenging the masters.

And to peterg: I have no problem really, I just came here because this was spammed on QL channels and I became interested because I really like QW. I just wish there was anyone to play with casually, without this being all puffed us business and annihilating rookie servers.

A problem with today's QW is that even the high level players are far away from the skill of the very top level players due to their insane amount of play time. Some probably play more QW than a paid footballer plays football and how are you supposed to compete with that? :)

The only real solution to the problem is to get MORE people playing so we have more people with all different kind of skill, so give it another go! :D

EU QW needs a draft league. It took our scene being dead for 5 years before we figured this out and actually tried it. It still isn't perfect and has problems from time to time but it beats the ZZZ of stacked clans and involves people of all skill levels on the same teams.

As a low skilled player who advanced to this status by playing in teams with better guys, I can attest this is a great way of improving, if only the skilled players aren't ragers, hehe :) It's also a good way to form new clans from players who never thought they'd be in a clan. Pure win.

Nah, you should realize every game has stupid shit happen in it. If you can't get past one incident like this then it's on you, not QW. At least the guys pwning in QW aren't cheating they just have tons of experience, often years worth over newbies. It is a hardcore game and as it gets older and the veterans get better and better it becomes even more so. However QW is easier to learn now than ever. When I started it took me a good month to learn to bunny since no one could really explain it well. Nowadays I see people doing it within a few days or less with the proper explanation.

Almost made me cry when i realised how shitty ql community is...

played this for a month or 2, then got Win7 and it never worked again ;( crashes after a few minutes. sounds familiar anyone? I'd love to play abit again

Weird, i've heard about the game taking a long time to start for some people the first few time(s) on win7, but crashing i'm not sure... If you installed it in c:\program files\nquake then make sure you're launching the game with admin rights.

Myself and a few others had this same problem. I found that installing a newer 'nightly build' fixed it (mine used to crash on start up). I think this was the link http://uttergrottan.localghost.net/ezquake/de...ds/win32/? but I can't confirm it, since I'm no where near my windows PC atm. If you head over to #qwrookie on qnet, they'll surely be someone who can help you further.

When I try to install any of those, even as an administrator, I get this error:

Error. Couldn't load gfx/palette.lmp

Make sure you have pak0.pak and pak1.pak (note: this one is NOT included in nQuake) in your /quake/id1/ directory.

For pak1.pak a google search for "pak1.pak +index of" returns some results...or you could just copy it off of your original Quake CD.

Edit: I'm not sure this is the problem but some thread on qw.nu suggested it might be. To me it feels this problem is a "classic" one yet i can't remember the solution. :( :)

On my laptop trying to play QW and it's impossible. The screen goes like out of focus all the time, it goes darker and you have to change the gamma to any other value (like if you use 1.5 gamma, you change it to 1.51 then back to 1.5).

A very atmospheric movie.
In my opinion, the first part was a bit melancholic; you really feel that this game is so "ancient", yet so eternal -the music also helps to travel back in time and remember the golden days of FPS-gaming and your unforgettable youth. My chest thightened and almost made me cry.
The players are also something different than today's new-age people - calmness and peace radiates from them; they know that they were there at the beginning and they stayed true in the long years passing by.
The majority of them is at least in their mid-twenties and it's so pleasing to watch such "old" people (including myself) keeping the true flame alive.
Respect.

Too bad most of those top guys, good guys, and good players don't play some role in QL community also.

People keep forgetting that for having a community like QW you'd need to sift trough any incomers, all the pass trough players and get a stable community which is clans serious mid/high clans and players only. Have them idling IRC and maybe playing a few well organized games.

If you keep track of QL pickup channels, idle in them, idle in QLRanks and keep track of duel servers where mid/high players play you can pretty much have the same experience in QL as in QW.
Just boils down to what you prefer as a game.

Great movie, I do hope QL community keeps up and learns from you guys.

Quite different than I expected, and very well done. It captured some of the essence of a dying game and the longing of lost youth. I liked the part at the end with the young teen and how he's been captured by SC just like many were by QW in the past when they were younger.

my god. this video was beautiful. almost brought a tear to my eye. as a former qw duel/midair/TF player in america this made me incredibly nostalgic and happy-sad all at once. i miss the LANs, i miss the house parties, i miss the cute IT girls, and i definitely miss hanging out with your dudes watchin replays. god damn.
